We were in town for the annual Chocolate Tour and used Yelp to find a place that had good hamburgers. This was the first suggestion with great reviews. We were able to find free street parking since the place is not in the city center. It looks like a small place with a couple of tables outside. When you walk in you get a great diner vibe. Our server Brenna was very friendly and attentive. I went for their weekly burger special - the mushroom melt with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions and choosing to skip the horseradish mayo. I really enjoyed my burger and would come back to check out their weekly burger special. I wasn't too happy with the fries. They were somewhat limp and not crispy. We drove to Newburyport to see what a boat we were interested in and decide to lunch here seeing it was right down the street. I had read their reviews beforehand and was very impressed. The food was good not great! To be honest we were disappointed. Our server Rachel was lovely and did a fine job. I was on a flight once, and after the plane landed the flight attendants walked around with iPads asking passengers if they'd like to tip the flight crew. I'm only kidding, but in today's day and age where tipping culture has run amok, I wouldn't be surprised if this became the norm. Spirit, don't get any ideas, now! I have no problem with tipping, and do so generously. Yet, in a world where the trees will soon be subtly nudging towards a tablet with every breath I take, it was refreshing to hear about a no-tipping restaurant that pays its staff fair wages. Always nice to support a family business, too. Thus, when I was more-or-less in the area and due for a family date night, I decided to finally give The Cormorant a try. I had the opportunity to try the Naan-chos and the Duck vs. Cow burger. With the Naan-chos, I appreciate the creativity, but the execution did not work for me. I feel that the parts did not work together to form a cohesive dish. This comes down to two factors: First, the large size of the ingredients, specifically the naan chips and veggies. There is only so much I can fit in my mouth without looking like a barbarian! Second, the lack of cheese as a binding agent meant there was little to help stick components together. Where it comes to the parts on their own, the naan chips were a good base for the dish, and were cooked nicely to give just the right amount of crispness while not making them as hard as a tortilla chip. The hummus, beef, and veggies were good, but nothing to write home about. Though, I'd like to mention: the "spiced" beef felt as if the only spice was salt, and maybe pepper. The harissa, meanwhile was incredible! It had great flavor, and a pleasant level of heat. Meanwhile, the garlic maple tahini sauce did not work in this dish. It was heavy, in-your-face sweetness that did not meld with any other ingredient. The Duck vs. Cow burger was a different story. I loved the combination of the duck confit and burger patty. The duck especially was cooked to perfection and brought tremendous flavor. The aioli and the sweetness offered lovely savory and gently sweet notes that complimented the protein nicely. The only thing missing for my taste is some kind of acid, even if it is only a pickle on the side. The onion rings though didn't quite do it for me - they felt a little heavy on the breading, and were the kind that the little onion strings escapes leaving a substantial bread shell behind. Inside, the space is small yet warm and inviting, and has counter seating and a couple tables. The service is polite and appropriately fast. The prices were reasonable, especially considering there wasn't the de facto service charge which is an expected tip. Thus, while The Cormorant was a positive experience I don't see myself schlepping from Quincy. read more

We were in Newport for the pink house celebration when my daughter suggested we eat at the cormorant. We had a party of seven and from the moment we walked in we knew we were going to have a fabulous experience. The Cormorant is a hidden gem! This small, welcoming hamburger joint near Cashman Park really impressed us. One of the owners personally greeted us at the door, sat us, brought us water, and took the time to explain the specials and menu items--which gave the whole experience a warm, personal touch. I went with the build-your-own burger and my friend had the Black & Blue Double Stack. Both were cooked perfectly and incredibly juicy. I especially appreciated the option to get a side salad with homemade dressing instead of fries--fresh, flavorful, and a nice lighter option. They also offer a tempting selection of homemade desserts, but we were too full to try them this time. We're already planning to come back when the weather warms up to enjoy burgers and milkshakes outside. Highly recommend! read more

The onion rings were awesome! Perfectly fried and not greasy. I really wanted to love the salmon burger but I thought it was overdressed. I would try it again but I'd order the aioli on the side. Oh so delicious! First, I was curious about this restaurant after driving by. Second, I reviewed the menu and was very tempted by the offerings. Third, I convinced my wife that we should eat there yesterday. The daily special were tempting, but I really wanted to try the Street Corn, Guac & Chips as well as the Cilantro Lime Salad. Both were delicious. The street corn had the right amount of heat for my taste buds. The salad was mouthwatering and beautiful. I appreciated the serving size, neither too much nor too little. The best burger and fries I've ever had in my life. No joke. Perfectly seasoned smash style patty on I think a potato bun or similar. The meat tasted quality and the whole burger had a nice, ergonomic construction to it. This is the kind of burger where, if I were a cow, I'd be like "fair enough". Real, fresh cut fries, spot on onion rings, and a great selection of other things I'll definitely be going back to try. Fun, hip place. My friend and I went for lunch. It was a hot day and wanted something light, so we ordered 3 of the starters. The cauliflower tacos, mezze platter and the strawberry salad. The falafel in the meze platter were huge and crispy. So good!! All the produce was super fresh which is so important to me. The feta on the mezze platter was creamy and not as tart as some cheaper feta I've had. So delicious! Everything was wonderful and the staff was so friendly. You will love it. After 5 visits to the Cormorant I finally had to write a review. We are locals and have been to every restaurant in town. Hands down, the Cormorant is our favorite for casual family dining (just beats out Lexi's, which is also fantastic). The smash burgers are great of course, but I love how they try new things and end up with a delicious dish EVERY TIME! For example, the mushroom bao buns and kimchi egg & cheese breakfast sandwich were to die for. Kids love the shakes. I also must mention the incredible service. The people are always so friendly and seem like they are happy to be there. Sign of great management in my opinion. Oh and one of the owners is not only a fantastic cook but a good human who adopted a three legged rescue dog named....Burger. We just came back from an excellent lunch. This was our first (and won't be the last) time at The Cormorant and there's so many great things to like: the atmosphere- it's got an awesome 70s vibe, clean, bright, diner feel; excellent service from friendly staff; drinks- alcohol and nonalcoholic that were interesting and all sound good (including milkshakes, boozy and regular); then there's the food! We started with the corn & kimchi fritters that were excellent. Deep fried balls of flavor with a yummy sauce and bits of chives, I got the Venetian sandwich and my husband got a classic burger. My sandwich was two thin, tender deep fried pork cutlets with pickles and some kind of sauce and homemade fries and husbands burger was one of the best he's ever had. The fries were so good I had to take them home. We each got an iced tea and you could taste that it was homemade, not from a mix or bottle/can. I wanted to order dessert because they had some really good looking cake on display it I'll have to wait until next time. read more
