He is a very nice guy who knows his stuff. He gave me an my buddy a brief history of his shop and showed us all of his custom models. After sitting on the bike I knew I had to have it. My advice...avoid this place. My wife and I were looking to purchase a bike. We tried several places and kind of liked his cruiser with the shock attached. The wife decides to take it for a test drive. "Rusty" says just ride it on the sidewalk in front of the store. Meanwhile I am negociating the price of the bike with "Rusty". He says he can't do anything with the price...blah blah blah...I pay for it with my credit card. It's a busy Saturday and there a lot of people on the sidewalk. "Rusty" has his bikes lined up along the sidewalk so that there is a path about 3-4 feet wide left to navigate. My wife is no expert and ...yep she crashes the bike. She scrapes both of her knees pretty badly...the bike is unscathed. After thinking about it for half an hour she decides that the bike is too much for her and doesn't want it..."Rusty" tells me he is going to have to charge me bank fees for the refund. I tell "Rusty" we are going to have to sue him for negligence. He told us during the half hour we waited that this thing with the crashing in front of his store happens all the time. So "Rusty" agrees to give us back the whole amount. After we decided not to buy the bike there was a side of this guy that I imagine most of the people reviewing have not seen...not pretty. read more

I already have a beach cruiser and my girlfriend wanted one too. They are perfect for cruising around Alameda on a warm sunny day past the bungalows and restored victorians. We were visiting Pacific Beach in San Diego and I figured the bike stores would have some good prices. We ended up at Rusty Spokes and they had a large assortment and colors (blue, red, white, green, black). What makes this store great is that you can mix- match items on your bike, color of seat, wheels and tires. The girlfriend saw a pearl white cruiser but she wanted something a little different so she asked if she could add red wheels and a custom seat. The bike mechanic Tony swapped out parts to show what the cruiser's appearance would be. He was very patient and helpful. Rusty Spokes stands behind their product and if they find a defect they will fix it. What happens if the kickstand breaks? I guess I'll have to find out. read more

I went on a hunt for a beach cruiser this past Friday. I stopped in a few shops before heading to Rusty Spokes. My friend gave me some names of places to check out. I just headed West down Garnet hitting up the shops. To tell you the truth, I was getting disappointed and about to resign myself to having to get a used bike off Craigslist. The cost for some of these bikes is just out of this world. Aside from the cost though, I wasn't finding anything that I could even justify paying $350 for! Nothing at all really caught my attention. I recently took my little sis for her 21st birthday to pick out a cute bike and after stumbling on 3 dissapointing shops, we saw Tony outside setting up. I'm super annoyed! I just bought a Soft Cruiser for my Dad, for xmas, and now I want it. Oh well. I'm excited to gift this bike to him. It's a genius design. Growing up in San Diego, I've had plenty of cruisers, and this is bar none the best to date. It's so well made and doesn't look cheap, but still modest...which I like. I'm in the market to purchase a beach cruiser and stopped into Rusty Spokes to check out his rear suspension bikes. I ended up choosing another brand of cruiser (3G), but wanted to write a review because the owner was a really nice guy and gave great customer service! Very accomodating to my needs/desires, letting me ride any bike of my choosing, and even offered to switch out rims/tires, etc. to get the color combination I wanted. In the end, the bike is definitely a smooth ride and he certainly has a good concept with the soft cruisers. Seeing as how I purchased another brand of bike, I can't speak to the quality of his bikes, but I chose differently just based on personal preference and the overall general comfort that the 3G provided (I tried many...Electra, Phat Cycle, Nirve etc.), but Rusty Spokes had a nice selection and great customer service. I can't say enough good things about this place. I got my bike from them three years ago and it's been amazing- still rides so smoothly and has reliably transported me all over San Diego's beautiful coastline. I also love that they will make repairs on your bike, and often, they'll do it for the lifetime of your bike. When my chain was wearing out and getting rusty, I took it in to get fixed. I have some herniated discs that are on their way to the mend but this bike is the most comfortable, stable, and smooth riding cruiser out there. I must have tested 20 bikes before I finally decided on this one. On top of that, they customized it for me by adding 3 gears, front hand brake, front/rear basket and rack, headlight, and bell. Was in the market to buy a beach cruiser as I was moving up to Boise, Idaho a couple weeks ago. About a week before my move, my mom and I headed down to PB to check out PB Beach Cruisers. Well, while trying to find parking, we spotted Rusty Spokes and decided to stop in there to see the bikes before walking down the street. Dave was still putting the bikes out and greeted us so warmly that we decided to seriously look around there. He told us all about how he is the only one who does the rear suspension on the beach cruisers. I tried one out and really liked how it felt. I will be honest, there weren't as many color options as I had hoped, but I was in a pinch sine I was moving a week later. Well, we decided to take a look at PB beach cruisers still just to weigh our options. We walked down and had to look around for a few minutes before anyone came out to greet us. The service was just not good there, they just acted like they were the only guys in town and you had to buy your bike there. I appreciate good customer service as that is my profession, so I really disliked the service there. We told them we would come back and we just went back to Rusty Spokes. Dave was happy to see that we came back and he told me that if I wanted a basket and a lock that they are half off after purchasing the bike! Great deal! I was sooooo happy with his service and he said that if anything happens that he is more than happy to do tune ups or fix something on the bike! For a minute, I thought this place had closed and I was so sad, but I'm happy to report that Rusty Spokes has moved just east of the previous shop and taken over the old PB Beach Bike shop on the corner of Gresham and Garnet. Dave has the best and most comfortable beach cruisers in town with the "softest" cruiser ride due to his own suspension system he's made on his custom beach cruisers. He's currently low on stock but will be getting new bikes in starting end of April in 2 colors. He has men and women models but of course, the only primary difference is the center bar dipping down for the ladies or going straight across for the men so girls, if you don't care about the center bar being straight you can of course, purchase the "male" version. Dave also has tons of accessories you may need to customize your bike to your heart's content. He also rents beach cruisers for $15/day but with more than 1 bike, he usually gives a small discount. Rentals come with a basket if requested and a U-lock. Located in the heart of PB, you're just minutes away from miles of bike trails along the Bay and beaches. Although the bikes may be a bit more than other standard $99 cruisers you see advertised at several competitor stores, these ones definitely are the best in town due to customization, suspension system, comfort, quality and service! This place is the ONLY place you need to visit when RENTING or BUYING a beach cruiser in Pacific Beach San Diego! By far, their prices are extremely "fair". Recently my wife and sister and I took a trip to PB. We looked around for bike rentals online, and even checked prices on the boardwalk. The quality of the bikes here alone, make this place the right choice. The beach cruisers all have a custom & patented "shock" which make the ride so much more comfortable. Wide tires and an incredibly comfortable seat makes your ride easy and pleasant. The prices: $45 for 3 bikes, for 4 hours. They have pink, white, and black cruisers. They include a basket for the ladies and a cable w/lock n key. All that for $45! We cruised down Garnet to pier, then down the boardwalk to Belmont Park, rode some rollercoasters, and then stopped for fish tacos. The whole time, the bikes were easy to manuever and park. And, they were by far the best looking rentals on that beach! If I was ever to buy a beach cruiser, you bet Rusty's is where I'd order from. Dave "Rusty" is easygoing, informative, and very nice. For the yelper that had the bad experience buying - I'm sorry your wife fell off her bike. You should have informed the seller "Rusty" that she wasn't a strong rider. The negligence accusation has no merit. 1) the shop didn't know she would fall, bicycle sellers assume buyers know how to ride (just like car dealers assume you know how to drive when you buy) 2) there is plenty area to pass on the sidewalk, on a bike or walking -besides it is illegal to block the path of a sidewalk and I'm sure the City would have noticed since 1997 & 3) you got your money back - wether it was instantly or it took a 5 min conversation, you got ALL your money back. Doesnt' sound very negligent. Accomodating more like it. He even accomodated your attempts on "negotiations" on price tag. Bought my bike there a few months ago, they definitely have the least expensive bikes in PB. I got my cruiser, basket, and U lock for 160!!! The scooter/bike store 1/2 block away was charging 220! Three of us decided to go on a little bike riding adventure around pb today but we needed to rent one of my friends a bike. We stopped here (mostly because it was the first place we saw). Dave, the owner and bike builder, rented my friend a bike for $10 for three hours (he said normally its $15 for all day but since we only needed it a couple of hours he gave us a deal). While we were waiting for my friend to get situated and used to her bike, Dave helped me fix my kickstand on my bike at no charge. He was very friendly and very helpful. The bike he rented her was also one that he had built and she said it rode well. It seemed to be sturdy and well made. I will definitely bring my friends and family back to this place to rent bikes and maybe if my bike ever dies, I'll go to Dave for a new one! read more

So I just moved in from Chicago, and walked to about 4 bike shops. I met the owner of Rusty Spokes, Dave, and he put me on a few to test ride. After walking to the other 3 I knew which one I wanted. I waited a week and called up Dave to tell him I wanted to make it custom with colored tires and long (ape hanger) handlebars. Sure enough both additionals only added $19 and he put together within an hour. The bike rides great, and is by far the best quality out there for the price point which is very in-line, even on the low side after you get past the 1st line of "junk-bikes". My friend and I were living in PB and we decided to buy beach cruisers as they were all the rage over there. Rusty spokes is on garnett ave and looks good but be advised stay away. The guy that runs the shop is an absolute moron, he seems nice when you first buy the bike but is outrageously rude once you finish business with him, we know this as we returned to the shop,with many problems with one of the bikes, he treated us badly and he rushed us out of there as quick as he could not fully rectifying the problems with our bikes. The bikes themselves weren't great, with one of the bikes having many problems in the stabilizers, the service was awful and if you ask me, the product is overpiced. I purchased two beach cruisers in the spring of 2012 and the bikes have worked out great so far. The ride is comfortable as promised and I personally think the bikes have great style. Due to me moving a couple of times in the last year and half or so, the bikes got a little banged around (totally my fault). Nothing big, just the chain needed to be adjusted back on and a couple of screws came loose on the rear fender. Since I remember that when I purchased that maintenance on the bike would be covered, I decided to take it in. About 15 minutes later the bike was as good as new. Not only did they take my bike back in without question, they replaced my pedals with a newer more improved model without me even saying anything. David and Thomas (the only guys I have seen at the shop) have been extremely helpful each time I've been there and always super friendly. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for a quality, affordable bike that you will know last. read more

Everyone talks about how nice Dave is, and I don't find fault in that, he is a great guy. And the lifetime warranty is phenomenal. What they neglect to mention is the ride on these bikes. They are not 100 year old standard bicycle technology. These are custom designed patented bicycles. They have a smoother ride than any cruiser on the market. Ride one off the curb while you are sitting on the saddle. You will be amazed at how little jarring you will feel. A springer front ends take care of 10-15% of the shock. A swing arm spring loaded rear suspension, makes an incredibly smooth ride. What more could you ask for, lifetime warranty, smooth ride, reasonable pricing.
