Tried Rusty's about 6 months ago and loved it! Great food and friendly people. Took my parents there last weekend while they were visiting from out of town. Cashier had such an attitude when I asked questions about the sides. So much that everyone with me was shocked at her rudeness. I laughed about her inappropriate customer service because I thought the food was going to be good...until the food was delivered to the table. Everything was so ordinary and unimpressive. My husband and I ate here when Rusty's first opened, then moved away to Oregon for nine years. Today we came back to have some good BBQ, interestingly it has changed and is not at all what we remembered. We both got the pork plate and it was small portions, the sides were very disappointing, honestly the best thing was the tea. Nice people working behind the counter. I've only been a couple of times, but I've found the meat to be a little dry each time. Sauces are good but not spectacular. Parking lot is a mine field of potholes and there need to be more spaces. It's located in the parking lot of a larger mini mall so there is parking...it's just a little bit of a hike if you can't park closer to the building. Last time I was there, I ordered the Brunswick Stew. Again, the meat was dry but had a decent smoky flavor. I'm going to go back to Rusty's...mainly because it's the only BBQ place near where I live, but if I lived outside of Leeds, I'd probably hit another place and skip the drive. I'll update this if things get better. Rusty's BBQ catered our son's rehearsal dinner last weekend. We could not have been more pleased! Our guests raved about the food. The BBQ pork and chicken were served a with a variety of sauces. The sides were plentiful and delicious. The homemade banana pudding and brownies were the perfect way to end the meal. The staff arrived on time and had everything beautifully arranged before the dinner began. They handled everything from the beginning until the end and made sure we had everything we needed. The ribs were good but we received two small ones and I ate them with the sweet bbq sauce. The pulled pork was the big disappointment it was over cooked and dry. The chicken was nice and moist. Lackluster food at best. On par with public school cafeterias. There are better options out there (with reasonable prices)... Like your own backyard BBQing for the first time. Instant banana pudding infused Cool-Whip = real banana pudding (in what universe?). Duke, Jay Bush' dog, must have shared the "secret family recipe" for baked beans with Rusty's due to the uncanny similarity in taste. But the head chef (assuming a 1000 watt microwave) will make sure your food is hot and rubbery. read more

My tradition for road trips is to stop for BBQ. We stopped here on our way home to Atlanta and we were not disappointed. Everything at Rusty's was delicious! Ordered the sampler combo for two with ribs, turkey, chicken, pulled pork, and sausage. Sides of onion rings and spicy baked beans. The ribs were fall apart tender and flavorful. The turkey (which I'm typically not a fan of since it can get dry) was moist and tender (try the white BBQ sauce with it). Same for the chicken. Pork had great flavor and had nice pieces of crunchy bark. The sausage was also fantastic. The sides were equally well done. The onion rings were freshly cooked and crisp with nice big slices of onion. The spicy beans were super flavorful, well seasoned and with a great spicy kick. We decided to get dessert since they make them all homemade. The coconut cream pie has a huge mountain of perfect merengue that almost tastes like marshmallows. Crust is crisp and not soggy with a great coconut cream base. But the real star is their banana pudding. Seriously one of the best I've ever had. Service was also 5 stars! If you're driving through Birmingham and want to avoid stopping in the city, stop at Rusty's. We'll be back! read more

Found this little joint on Yelp, and boy am I glad I went there!! Ordered a sampler plate for pick up: couple of ribs, some pulled pork and 1//4 yardbird. Ribs were unbelievably meaty and and not fall off the bone, which I hate, but extremely tender with a good smokeiness to them. The pork was very flavorful as well. the chicken was a bit of a disappointment. It was cooked perfectly except did not have the smoked flavor I love. Not a big deal at all as there ws nothing but bones left on my plate. I got the house sauce which was a vinegar based but they had 3 others to try as well: sweet, spicy and a white sauce which tasted a little like ranch dressing. My sides were the greens which had nice chunks of ham in it and the spicy beans which went well with everything. The woman who toll my order and gave me directions there could not have been sweeter and everything about this place seemed so cozy. Looked like they had seating for about 50 and I can only imagine the lines this place gets during dinner times. My husband and I stopped by Rusty's while traveling. The food was very fresh and homemade. The BBQ sauce was a little more sour than I'm used to, but was still very good. There desserts were to die for! Wow. Homemade and super good. My husband who is a huge banana pudding person LOVED their pudding. He even had a second order of it. I had the peanut butter pie. Excellent BBQ and the location closer than I thought. Rusty does all of the usual dishes very well (pulled bbq pork, beef, and chicken) but some surprising standouts are the turkey (this is from a guy who NEVER orders turkey) which is very moist. I must say that, as a black woman, and after reading May W.'s review regarding the racist treatment of her black friend by Rusty's mother - I was a little scared to eat here. However, I was tempted by all the great reviews about the food, so I decided to check it out. When I walked in, the lady who took my order at the counter greeted me with a smile and was very friendly. I ordered the smoked turkey plate with mac-n-cheese, collard greens, spicy baked beans and a peanut butter pie for dessert. I ate inside the restaurant. The smoked turkey was EXCELLENT, tender and well seasoned; I tried all of the BBQ sauces which were good as well, although I didn't care for the white sauce. The Mac and cheese and baked beans were VERY good. The collard greens were seasoned well but mushy and I wasn't sure about eating them after May W's review . The peanut butter pie was AMAZING. All in all a good, though brief experience and BEST of all no one (not the staff or other customers) made me feel uncomfortable for eating in the restaurant 'while black' . This was truly the most disgusting bbq I've ever had the misfortune of paying for. The service was ok if a bit gruff, after all, how much service do you get at a walkup counter? The place was old and very dirty. Old is ok, dirty is not. But the food was horrible. We had ribs and brisket. Both were gray, not much evidence of smoke. It was like the ribs had been boiled, no chew at all, just mushy. The brisket, of which you get three slices for 12 bucks, was mostly fat. Not much if any smoke flavor on either. The sauces were ok but not as favorable as most. Stay away from this place if you like good bbq. read more
