Despite it being in Pennsylvania, it throws off a distinct hillbilly atmosphere. The usual signs about Jesus, Christmas and, of course, patriotism were in abundance. My party ordered a variety of dishes and I opted for the roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. Sorry to say, the food was just adequate. The beef was overdone and the gravy had the sheen of the bottled gravies at the grocery store. The mashed potatoes were the star of the show, however, as they were very good. The hamburger and pancakes ordered by others get similar reviews. It was a hamburger and tasted like one. The pancakes, being hard to screw up, were just pancakes. This is a cash-only place, so come prepared to be vilified for wanting to pay with plastic. The prices were lower than the norm but that did little to make me feel better upon leaving. Despite the dearth of customers when we were there, the service was also lacking. I had to seek out help to get a refill on my iced tea and we waited a while to pay...with cash. I can't really give this place any additional stars. Stop here if you absolutely can't wait to eat.

I only noticed later that the fries were mentioned in the menu. I certainly didn't mind because they were hot, tasty, and not at all greasy. Even though I was getting full and kinda anxious to get going, I was rather hypnotized by the refrigerator of freshly made pies. I just couldn't help myself and ordered a $4.29 slice of Banana Meringue Pie (Photo 8). I don't think I've had homemade pie that good since gorging at Valois back in my olden grad school days in the South Side of Chicago. What a nice surprise to have such a delicious square meal in a place called Indian Head. I ordered an Italian omelette, (I'm not sure why), it had hot sausage, peppers, and provolone cheese. My problem with the omelette was that the ingredients inside were runny and ran out of every bite. My buddy had French toast and sausage which he said were okay, but nothing special. Our verdict was that it was not horrible but not special enough for us to make a return trip.

They each have their own distinctive and unique decor and menu options. I have been here for breakfast, for events in the banquet room and for dinner and have enjoyed all of my experiences. My favorite experience here has been for the murder mystery dinners. For $45, you get a buffet dinner (that comes with soft drinks, the meal and dessert) and a funny musical comedy show. You can't beat that deal! When you enter for these events, you go to your assigned table. The characters are mingling and you can get drinks. The one thing I'll say is they needed more bartenders or a more efficient way to handle the drinks because the line was consistently long. Maybe having one person for things like pop and one for bar items could be helpful. The buffet is different depending on the time of year (and potentially theme of the mystery). They always have a salad table with pretty basic salad ingredients, but also celery, carrots and olives. The entrees included chicken, fish, veggies and my favorite, the carved ham and roast beef. For banquet food, it was tasty and enjoyable. The banquet room itself is pretty standard "generic banquet room" decor. Nothing special, but the chairs are actually comfortable (which isn't always the case). The lounge and main restaurant area. Well, if you want to feel like you've used a time machine and gone back a few decades, take a step in there. It is definitively retro but still somehow doesn't feel stale or old. They often host their wine dinners in this area. There are a variety of seating options and a more upscale menu than the other side of the restaurant. The menu is fairly limited and a bit old school "fancy" but if you know that going in you shouldn't be disappointed. We had the filet and the chicken marsala. Were the they best we've ever had taste or presentation wise? No, but they were enjoyable the the portions were good. As was the service. It wouldn't be a spot I'd come to regularly for dinner, but I'd definitely eat in the dinner area again. The diner/breakfast side was more fast paced and old school diner, almost cafeteria vibe. Food items are pretty cheap considering today's food prices, especially for breakfast items. I like that with all the traditional and old school options they also have avocado toast. I've had their pancakes (which were huge, but not all that thick) and their omelet. Pretty standard diner fare. Nothing was food I was eager to come back and have again, but it was all perfectly tasty. So, come with an open mind. And remember that this place is essentially three different experiences. Just make sure you are prepared for which one you are hoping to enjoy.

Unfortunately, the manager who answered did not identify himself, and when I asked for his name, instead of simply telling me, he asked who I was. When I told him I was a customer who was there earlier in the day, he then identified himself as Chris. I also found his response to my concern to be very unapologetic, which was disappointing. From a place that prides itself on its desserts, I honestly expected better. I'm hoping this was just a fluke with one batch, because I would hate to see a longtime favorite change for the worse. But since the new owners took over, I have noticed that there just doesn't seem to be the same consistency that I remember from the previous owners. Very disappointing, especially because I had been looking forward to that Boston cream pie and had even recommended it to my friend.
