Summit hits all three marks, serving straightforward and delicious American standards since the 1960s. The three-egg omelet loaded with veggies and sausage was exactly the pre-ski power-up I needed. My son stuck with his go-to breakfast burrito, and my daughter went with the classic two eggs, bacon, and potatoes. Everything was spot on. The staff has just the right level of "WWA"--Waitresses With Attitude. They are perfectly polite, but they hold the line on proper behavior and will quickly put anyone in their place if they step out of line. It keeps the environment grounded and authentic. Stopped by just after the lunch rush on a weekday. Not wanting to do a chain, we tried our luck and ventured into the Summit Diner. Despite it being in Pennsylvania, it throws off a distinct hillbilly atmosphere. The usual signs about Jesus, Christmas and, of course, patriotism were in abundance. My party ordered a variety of dishes and I opted for the roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. Sorry to say, the food was just adequate. The beef was overdone and the gravy had the sheen of the bottled gravies at the grocery store. The mashed potatoes were the star of the show, however, as they were very good. The hamburger and pancakes ordered by others get similar reviews. It was a hamburger and tasted like one. The pancakes, being hard to screw up, were just pancakes. This is a cash-only place, so come prepared to be vilified for wanting to pay with plastic. The prices were lower than the norm but that did little to make me feel better upon leaving. Despite the dearth of customers when we were there, the service was also lacking. I had to seek out help to get a refill on my iced tea and we waited a while to pay...with cash. I have family in Somerset, PA so each time we are in town we take my Uncle Bob to his favorite breakfast spot you guessed it the Summit Diner and we absolutely love the nostalgia of the diner. They staff is fast and friendly and the food doesn't disappoint. It's such a rare thing in this day and age to see an old diner so we love to go when we are visiting Somerset. We typically go for breakfast. The next time you're in the area it's definitely a must stop place to go. Give them a try and you may have to wait to be seated they also only accept cash as their only form of payment so come prepared, they do have a ATM in the waiting area. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Cheeseburger, onion rings and a thick chocolate shake. The food was absolutely delicious. Service was excellent. Older country music playing at the perfect volume. Spring has sprung at the Summit Diner! The bacon mushroom Swiss burger is consistently one of the best I've ever had. The fries are pretty good and service is always friendly. My only gripe is that they charge $1 for a glass of tap water. Cmon' guys! You're cash only and I'm willing to bet you're not reporting every dime you collect....you can't provide a free glass of water to a customer that doesn't drink sodas or coffee? It seems kind of petty in my opinion, add a quarter to the cost of the burger or something. Charging for tap water is ridiculous. The waitress came upon my order with a nice attitude and I ordered the hot Turkey sandwich she asked if I would like Cole slaw or Apple sauce with my meal so I ordered Apple sauce. When the check came she charged me $4 for a small bowl of Apple sauce. I said you didn't tell me this was extra and besides I can buy a whole jar of Apple sauce for that price. From. Behind the counter she yelled if you don't like it you can go to Walmart and buy a Turkey dinner and applesauce. How rude, I told her she was the most ignorant person I have ever experienced. Stopped in for breakfast. We ordered eggs, bacon, an omelet and the pancakes (because the menu said they were special). Tried to get egg whites but there's an upcharge for that so I declined. Food had zero seasoning. Got the bill and was charged incorrectly for eggs but the waitress fixed it. Also noticed they charge you for a glass of water. I think the biggest takeaway from this diner is the "you eat here because we let you" vibe. The menu has "PITA" fees for substitutions, the waitress stand says "Complaint Department". You can't look in any direction without seeing a sign yelling at you to not touch something or to not do something. Even the urinal has a jokey sign yelling at you. Let's not forget the sign over the counter espousing the owner's views and telling you to leave if you don't like it. The food is your standard breakfast food. It is good and comes out quick and hot. The prices are reasonable. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. And the diner has fun paintings on the wall. It is definitely our go to breakfast place when we come in to visit family. read more

I actually love this diner and have been coming here for 40+ years; however, my sister in law and I were in Somerset on Saturday and were planning to stop for lunch. There was a family of 4 waiting outside at the "Stop Sign" telling people to wait outside until a table was available. There were only 2 of us and the family of 4 said there might be a table for 2 available. We went inside and were met with a very rude server/waitress/owner (not sure who she was) who asked us why we weren't waiting outside as the sign indicated. When I tried to tell her the party waiting outside suggested that a table for 2 might be available now, she argued that were more than 4 people waiting and asked us to go back outside. At that point there was no way we were sticking around. We are also very sorry we didn't take an opportunity to express our displeasure with her inappropriate behavior. If you don't know how to treat your customers you shouldn't be working with the public. read more

The last time we were at Summit Diner we were charged $1 each for tap water. The waitress was not pleasant when I questioned that. She said people order water and then don't drink it. I love Summit Diner! It's my pit stop between drives from the Mid-Atlantic to the Midwest. I make my husband plan our road trips around this spot! Why, you ask? I love open-face Turkey Sandwiches with gravy and mash potatoes. It's a comfort food item, that reminds me of my childhood. I grew up with rice as our main staple and this dish I only got by going to diners with my parents. The servers here are so sweet. I also ask them to blanket my sandwich with all the yummy warm gravy. Once, they didn't have mash potatoes ready because I ordered this dish in the morning, so I replaced it with crispy hash. Hello! That's a game changer. Now I'm torn between which potatoes to get on every visit. Don't leave this diner without Chocolate Gob Cake, take it to go if you must. Trust me! You will see a lot of locals dining here, don't be alarmed if they stare, just smile until they smile back. We rolled into the parking lot with our fat F350 truck and parking was easy. Walking in the diner reminded me of those cute 1950's diners. Bright, shiny, and clean. Our wait person was kind and personable. She brought our delicious coffee post haste. We ordered a breakfast burrito, a breakfast skillet, along with a half order of biscuits and gravy to share. It came out in a surprisingly timely fashion as it was moderately busy. When I commented on that the wait person commented that it was a slow morning due to hunting season -- so the cooks were having a quicker turnaround today! Our food was perfect. The breakfast burrito was huge, fresh, not greasy at all, and I took half of it with me. The breakfast skillet also huge, the bacon inside was crispy and the potatoes were tender with just the right crunch. The scrambled eggs, peppers, and onions were not overcooked but delectable. Now the sausage gravy and biscuits ... oh my! Fresh and flaky homemade biscuits. The sausage was their homemade recipe with good tasting spices in it. Simply put, this little diner is awesome!!! Very friendly service. I ordered a double cheeseburger with veggies and fries for only $8! The burger was juicy and not overly greasy or dripping with oil. Vegetables were fresh and plentiful. Fries were crisp. Can't ask for much more than that for a nice hot and quick lunch. They had many lunch special options that I saw other customers order and they looked delicious and very generous portions. It looked like mostly locals here when we stopped for lunch.
