This place is a gem. Set inside a beautifully restored old pharmacy, the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between historic charm and lively energy. It feels warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed without trying too hard. Service was friendly and relaxed -- Jess took great care of us throughout the evening. There was a small hiccup with the chicken order initially, but it was corrected quickly and professionally, which says a lot about how the team operates under pressure. Expediting could have been a little tighter, but the recovery was handled well. The food was the real star. The tuna appetizer was outstanding, and the fried chicken was incredibly moist and flavorful -- even though the crust was darker than expected and looked overcooked at first glance, it turned out to be tender and delicious once we cut into it. Biscuits were excellent, mac and cheese was rich and satisfying, and the grits were perfectly done. Desserts -- the brownie and apple cobbler -- were absolutely amazing and a strong finish to the meal. The only minor disappointment was the honey mustard/honey barbecue sauce, which was thinner than expected and lacked that thicker, honey-forward texture you might anticipate. Overall, this was a fantastic dining experience. Great atmosphere, strong execution in the kitchen, and a team that clearly cares about taking care of their guests. This was an amazing meal with top notch service. I ended up having additional people that wanted to join my group for dinner and the staff was so accommodating. The location is not too large but as a former drug store location, it's adorable. Once seated, we were introduced to Jack who truly made our night. He was full of great suggestions and kept up with all of our drinks all night. I'm very glad I took his suggestions because every bite I had was delicious. The group has just about everything on the menu, but the standouts for me were the oysters Rockefeller, the collard greens, the dessert, and my cocktail (the Remedy). Perfection! This is the place to go for local, unique, sea to table fare. Tonight we thoroughly enjoyed the catch of the day, Trigger Fish. Mild, sweet with a texture like crab. The deviled eggs are a must! The Juicy Lucy oysters are perfectly salty and don't need horse radish or cocktail sauce. Go between 5-6 pm for half price oysters!). And the clam chowder was certainly different, not creamy. I loved it! The sourdough bread pudding was delicious, topped with soft serve. The serving is enough for three people. We made a reservation at Rx Chicken and Oysters about a week in advance, thinking it was a new spot. Would have never guessed it's actually been around for about 12 years and we've missed it this whole time. Walking in, was a real blast from the past for me. Last I was her ewas mid-90s, and it was the Halls Drug Store at that time. It's now an impressive, cozy, stylish restaurant with a really inviting vibe. The place was humming when we arrived. We started with the skillet cornbread. Oh my god, it was perfection. I could have easily just ordered 3 or 4 of these and called it a night. For miains we ordered the night's fish special and a chicken breast plate, and both were excellent. Perfectly cooked, full of flavor. The drinks too were awesome. Crafty cocktails and a solid lineup of local beers. Service was outstanding. Anthony was our server. He couldn't have been better. He knew the menu front to back, spoke about each dish with pride, and made us feel like regulars. The guy clearly cares about the place, and it shows. Foolish of me to call him "Matt" all night long. Made an online reservation for Tuesday dinner the day before. It wasn't very busy while we were there from 6 to 7 PM. We started off with oysters. I tried the steamed Rx Lucy Beas based out of topsail sound and my partner enjoyed the Lucy Beas and Ana's Wild Harvest based out of Masonboro Sound. There were a total of five oyster options with Lucy Beas being the only one they farm and being the saltiest. The Lucy Beas oysters were very salty and were very good- the best part of the whole meal. The only condiment options for the oysters were hot sauce, butter, fresh lemon, fresh lime, horseradish, and cocktail sauce. For entrées, my partner got the large plate of fried oysters, which usually comes with slaw and fries. He was able to substitute a side salad for the fries. He enjoyed his dish. The slaw was red cabbage with a ginger flavor, which I wasn't into because of the ginger. The side salad was good, came with sliced radishes and carrots with the vinaigrette. They could've gone a little lighter on the vinaigrette, salad was saturated a bit too much. I tried the veggie burger, which came with Lusty Monk grainy mustard, bread and butter pickles, lettuce, and shoestring fries on a thick house made toasted sourdough bun. Only white potato fries were available, no sweet potato fries. The burger needed a sauce, otherwise, it was too dry and plain with just mustard. The veggie burger itself had good flavor though-ingredients included sprouted lentils, sweet potato, mushroom, rice. Bun was okay, very dense. The shoestring fries were good. For dessert had one of the hand pies with soft serve vanilla ice cream. Only apple flavor was available. It was deep-fried, crispy with a sweet, chopped apple filling, very good. Seasonings were insane on the skin you don't need the hot honey but please try it, it's great. Let me paint the picture: we made a 9:00 AM reservation for Father's Day brunch. We received a confirmation and guests from out of town arrived. We showed up with my elderly parents promptly at 9:00 AM, only to find the restaurant closed--as in, lights-off, doors-locked, not-opening-for-another-hour closed. When we finally spoke with the OWNER by phone, we were met with confusion, not accountability. Apparently, the restaurant doesn't even open until 10:00 AM. So why are they accepting and confirming 9:00 AM reservations? No one had an answer. No apology. No offer to make it right. Just an awkward brush-off and a clear message: "Not our problem." We were told to show up at opening time but RX could not guarantee a table or service. NO THANKS. VERY DISAPPOINTING attention to organization and TERRIBLE customer service. This place is either grossly disorganized or just doesn't care. Either way, it's not worth your time or trust. There are plenty of restaurants that know how clocks, calendars, and customer service work. Go to one of those instead. read more

We've been wanting to try this establishment for some time, so we gave it a try the other day. While we would have liked to be seated in the main dining room or bar area, the only tables left were in the back room, even though we made a reservation. The room lacked ambiance and was a bit on the warm side since it was hot outside. Our server was nice and no complaints about the service at all. All staff seemed nice and attentive. We wanted a light meal, so we tried the Carolina Clam Chowder with a side of cornbread. What a disappointment! The soup was mainly a fatty broth with a few potatoes and clams that were not chewable. I had to spit them out, since they were like rubber. The chowder had bacon, no problem there, however it seemed like the bacon fat overtook the soup. The cornbread that seemed to be baked in a small iron skillet, was covered with grease - perhaps that's what kept it from sticking to the skillet, however it was not good. While we did not order items on the menu that they are known for, chicken and oysters, we were not hungry enough and besides, why would I pay $22 for fried chicken breast? It was bad enough that our bowl of broth with rubbery clams was $12 each. By the way, I've lived long enough to know the quality of the clams in chowder - not chewy or rubbery, but rather soft, chewable and pieces you can swallow! Sorry to say, we won't be back. read more

I ordered shrimp and grits and husband ordered the red fish special. Fish and grits was good, but vegetables were super salty. My shrimp and grits didn't taste like it was seasoned at all. I had to take bites of shrimp and grab some of my husband's vegetable on his plate to balance taste. We informed our server to relay message so that kitchen can be mindful of seasonings because the food has potential to be good. Our server didn't look happy, but made sure he knows we are not mad at anyone, just sending constructive criticism so they know how to make things better. Maybe will try another time. Our clear favorite for the evening were the Shrimp & Grits. The grits were creamy but light and were complemented by the perfect amount of fresh shrimp and sauce. We nearly cleaned the plate because that sauce was packed with so much flavor! The oysters and peel & eat shrimp were solid choices, and also very fresh. The Carolina Clam Chowder however was something we'll probably pass on since it was rather one-note and slightly too salty. I got their Lucy b oysters & my friend got the other oysters, steamed. Mine were good, but a little saltier than what I'm used to. My friend enjoyed her oysters as well. We enjoyed their 2 farm oysters one was Lucy and I don't remember the name of the other. Both delicious and flavorful, each unique. HIGHLY recommend! Then roasted oysters and fried chicken (wing, thigh, leg). Perfectly crispy and juicy. Side of coleslaw was unique, almost kimchi-esque. Crunchy and vinegar, not spicy or sweet had their veggie taco, cause they do it with a combo of veggies rather than typical black bean or pho meat. It was dense and flavorful. We'd been there before and the atmosphere was pretty good as well as the food. Today, not so much. We were seated in the patio area which is nice for conversation...but we felt somewhat out of sight out of mind by our waiter. The deviled appetizer was probably the best part. The menu item I selected was a monte christo, but what arrived was a piece of dense toast with sparse salty ham, melted cheddar cheese and a runny egg (after I requested an egg over hard) coupled with sweet potato fries pieces that looked like they came out of a frozen bag. The waiter tried to compensate by bringing two small cinnamon rolls that were doughy and under cooked, but I ate mine because I was craving something sweet (hence, why I ordered a monte christo in the first place). The Bloody Marys tasted ok, but it was the sadest attempt I'd ever seen at garnish...no celery, bacon or anything remotely imaginary...just a sad thin slice of wimpy pickle with an equally sad little olive...that's it. Let's just say I was glad we had a gift card for a $65 brunch that left us disappointed. Don't think we'll be running back any time soon, which is sad, because I really liked the owner I met the first time we went and the fact that they'd taken such great care in preserving the persona and history of Halls Drug Store. read more
