I brought my wife and parents out to this establishment. Each of us were very excited over the different Menu options. We all decided to taste something different. I ended up with the Blue Bayou burger, my wife got the Gyro, Mother had the Cajun, and father had the gyro as well. (We also all had the garlic parm fries). We all ended up trying a little bit of each dish and it was amazing. I have recommended this place to so many people over the last 5 days due to how great the food was. This is our new date night location, and honestly a good atmosphere. I urge you to not be dismayed by the negative reviews below. All restaurants that start up have growing pains, and by the time I made it there our service was great and food even better. This was our first time at Ryan's on York. I Stopped in on New Years Eve around noon with my wife. I was surprised that it's more a bar than a restaurant, I was under the impression it was a small restaurant that had a bar, instead it's a bar that serves food. So seating is a bit limited. The menu was good and had some unique choices. I had a hard time deciding because everything sounded good. In the end I went with the Blue Cheese burger and my wife with the Korean Tacos. Service was fast and friendly, the menu prices were about average for what you expect for food that doesn't come overly processed. About $8-$10 per item, so nothing overly expensive. My burger was very good, it came on bread that was toasted in a panini press, the blue cheese.....was blue cheese. But the zinger was the remoulede sauce. It was beautifully spicy without being overpowering to the bacon, beef, and cheese. The meat had a good crust on it without being charred. My wife really liked the Korean Tacos, but admits the portion size there was on the smaller side. But that was just fine since the dish was flavorful and appears to not be made with pre packaged ingredients. This is FAR and away better than Mcdonalds in both taste and quality, so I'm not sure how someone else even made that comparison. But maybe the cook on that day was a bit off or new. The beer list is always important to me. Even though I couldn't drink because I'm recovering from an injury and on medication for the pain, they had solid choices. They had Left Hand Milk Stout, some beer from 3 Sheeps, New Glarus, and Sprecher on tap. If I remember correctly one was being served on nitro as well. The only thing I was not impressed with were the fries (hence 4 stars instead of 5). The were a bit on soft side and a bit cool for me, I would have preferred hot and crispy fries. But I imagine they do them in batches and we received the tail end. As far as Manitowoc's restaurants go, this would be my top suggestion for good bar food. We are very unhappy with the food offerings in this area and often travel to find good gastro-pub type of fair. I know for sure we will be going back, if that means anything. It's not necessarily a kid friendly type of joint, so for us it probably more take out than eating in except on those rare occasions when the kids are away. read more

This has always been my favorite place to eat. Last couple of times have been very disappointing. The other night my husband ordered San Fran Noodles and like the last two times they were hard and stuck together. I ordered wings and they were burnt. I also ordered Grey Goose on the rocks and was charged $5 for the Grey Goose and $1.50 extra for the rocks. What is that about. Sure hope things get better soon. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to give Ryan's on York a try for the first time. We both were actually really impressed. The atmosphere of the place was fun and social! The food was great! My boyfriend got the regular hamburger and said it was really good. I got the house melt. That was awesome! I would recommend it to anyone! We also got regular fries and frickles (fried pickles). Stopped in for lunch on our way up to Door County. I think it was unusually busy because it was just the cook and waitress/bartender and almost full. They both kept their cool and just plugging ahead. She kept apologizing and thanked us for our patience. They had an interesting menu, not like your typical pub fare. All the food was great and hot. Had some interesting cocktails, but I just was in the mood for a Bloody Mary which was awesome with a generous slice if bacon in it! Had a nice beer selection too! I would recommend it. First of all, I'd like to say that the atmosphere at Ryan's is very inviting, and the staff is very friendly. Walking into the bar, the first thing I noticed was the fact that I could actually hear people talking to each other over the music, which is always a plus in my book. I hate going out for a drink with my friends and having to shout over blaring music all night long. The establishment is also brightly lit and has plenty of space for sitting and standing room. To that end, Ryan's is a nice place to go to kick back with a small group of friends. That is, if you have a lot of money and time to burn. The biggest downsides to Ryan's are the prices and the speed of service. A friend and I went to Ryan's for the first time a few nights ago, and decided to get something to eat while we were there. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich for $3, plus an extra $2 for fries. My friend ordered a small gyro for $5, plus Parmesan fries for $4. We sat at the bar waiting for about 45 minutes to an hour to get our food. During that time, we tried to flag down the staff several times for drinks or to ask about our food, but were ignored. The bar was very busy, and the staff seemed to be all over the place, so I can at least understand why it was so hard for us to get the staff's attention. The establishment definitely seems understaffed. What I can't understand, though, is the pub's idea of the portion to price ratio. When you generally order a grilled cheese sandwich, what do you typically expect you're going to get? Two regular pieces of bread with some cheese in the middle, buttered up and cooked, right? Well at Ryan's, if you order a grilled cheese sandwich for $3 and wait for almost an hour, the staff will set a disk of bread in front of you, smaller than your palm and about as thick as your pointer finger. It may or may not consist of two pieces of bread and some cheese - when I ate it, it basically just tasted like a slightly crunchy piece of bread. The $2 fries were of a reasonable portion size, however they were terribly overcooked, bordering on burnt. As for my friend, her $5 gyro was also barely the size of her palm, and her "Parmesan fries" were literally exactly the same as my order of fries but with Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top... for $2 more than a regular order of fries. We were shocked by this, and even more shocked when our drinks were added on to the bill (which were also surprisingly pricey). Ryan's on York advertises itself as a pub, and as such we were expecting typical pub prices and food portions one would expect to see in the Manitowoc area. However, what we were met with was very little bang for our buck. While someone with enough cash to burn may enjoy Ryan's and take no issue with the bizarre food portion sizes, those who are not so affluent may feel cheated out of their money, as my friend and I felt on leaving the pub. As such, I don't think I will be going back any time soon. I feel bad saying this, as I'd like to stress that it IS a nice place to go for a drink. But honestly, with the way certain food and drink items are served and priced, I can't see any reason to go back when I can go to several other comparable bars and get much more for my money. I sincerely hope someone from Ryan's reads this review and takes some of my points into consideration - many people love Ryan's and I wish I could be one of them! But really... who the hell would be happy with being served a small bread-disk after ordering a grilled cheese sandwich? Come on, guys... would you really be happy to get that at a restaurant or a pub or a cafe? REALLY? read more

Was excited to try a new place in town with a different menu. Went with friends from out of town so I was excited to show them something different. Started out with the deep fried pickles. They had a good flavor but the breading would completely fall off. The Korean tacos were just ok--didn't like that the flatbread wasn't even warm. Had 4 different servers and each one charged a different price for drinks as well as not bringing the correct ones. The other items were just ok as well Bangkok burger, shrimp po boy and crab sandwich was not as expected. I will wait and see other reviews to see if they improve before returning. read more

Heard good things and was excited to try Ryan's on York. Admittedly, the place was PACKED and it took 20 minutes to get a single seat at the bar (there were two of us), but from the time we got to place our dinner order until the time we got our entrees was over an hour. The Korean Taco was appetizer sized at best and the Cuban left a lot to be desired (small, lacking flavor, and overpriced). We did order parm fries and they arrived a full 30 minutes before our entrees. How are ticket processed in the kitchen? This bar has potential and the staff was indeed friendly. A nice surprise on our way back from the PGA championship. It's a few miles off the freeway but worth the effort. Terrible. Old fashioned was too sour, had to send back, last day of Subfest, just before closing ceremonies, they were out of burgers! The fries were almost black. Went here for the first time on a Saturday night around 8 and it was very busy but still a few tables open. We met friends and ate at the bar (last two spots) which made me worried, but we had an awesome, attentive bartender who made our drinks and took our order. My girlfriend ordered a glass of moscato and it was a generous glass which was surprising and welcome. My clamdigger was delicious and came with bean sprouts and bacon - loved those additions! We shared the fried pickles which had a good taste but were a little dark and because they were hand breaded were impossible to eat, I would like them to find a way to take care of that. The Korean tacos were amazing! My girlfriend had a noodle dish and thought it was slightly above average but would eat it again. Both of us picked something random off the menu as it appeared to be a tough choice, many dishes sounded very intriguing. Sometimes you find something you like, sometimes you don't. We have been going to Ryan's since the time they opened. Needless to say, tonight will be our last visit! The unfortunate thing is that Ryan's seems to be turning into a dive type bar, regarding the filthy floor, tables, waitstaff & atmosphere! Tonight we arrive before 6:30, not too busy seeing as we got a table right away, albeit, a dirty one and ordered our drinks, one Oktoberfest draft & an ice water. Then we waited for 10 minutes until the wait staff remembered that we were there. We placed our order by 6:42 (checked my cell phone) and waited. A number of people came in to drink at the bar, but there were at least 2 tables that came in to eat...again, not really that busy. By 7:15, I'm getting a little pi$$y, and so is my husband, because the table of 2 that came in after us was served ahead of us...so we waited some more...another table of 4 that came in after us also got served before us, so we finally got up to leave, explaining to the waitress that waiting 45+ minutes while others were being served was unacceptable & we thanked them for the free warm beer & left...we are soooo disappointed, because this used to be one of our favorite places in Manitowoc. read more

Ryan's on York is a small bar with bar food, I had the Gyro on Naan my wife had the Bulgogi Steak Sandwich. The Gyro was good as its hard to screw that up but the Bulgogi sandwich tasted like top sirloin cooked fast as it was chewy/tough in some kind of made up sauce that reminded me of my college days when we kind of slapped together what we could find in the cupboard in this case this is exactly what it was in my opinion. The bartenders were AWESOME and friendly, the bar was extremely clean and presentable. I would come in and eat again but i'd stick to the basic burger. PLEASE SEE JCM'S review below he/she was dead on. 11/13... Tried Ryans again and for the last time I have asked my wife to not suggest going back! I ordered a simple house burger and asked for it medium rare. I was told "you can't have it like that because of they way they are squished, what does that mean? I said just take it off the grill sooner...nope, nada...not gonna do it...you get what you get for a burger (that was what I was thinking) so I got the burger (fast) and it tasted ok but I gotta tell you about the Fries they were soaked in grease when they should be cooked in grease not served in grease I asked for extra napkins to dry them off because at 2+ dollars i'm gonna eat those things. Ok, so expensive my wife and I both had the exact same thing, burger, fries and a coke with tip 21.00. REALLY. that's all I got on this place sorry and good luck in the future but I won't be going back.
