Avoid this place at all costs. I've gone here once prior to the poor experience i am about to explain and I loved it so much that I brought 4 of my friends here. we went on a Saturday afternoon and it was not busy, we were sat at a table quickly, but was not approached by a server for over 15 minutes. She dropped off waters and then didn't come back for probably another 10 minutes to ask for our drink order. Drinks took over 10 minutes, and by this point we had been here for over 30 minutes by the time we received our coffee. After drinks were dropped off, we waited again to order our food, and our food order took over 35 minutes to come to the table. Over an hour in we were all fed up and I'm embarrassed that I recommended this place and brought friends here. The food arrives, and that's the worst part. All of our food is freezing cold. I ordered an eggs Benedict and the potatoes on the side were cold to the touch, and the meat was cold and the eggs were overcooked. It didn't even seem like any of our food was sitting under a heat lamp and it seemed like the server or somebody forgot to run our food. We told our server that we didn't like our food, two of our orders especially since it was cold to the touch, and since we had already waited so long, we did not want anything remade, we wanted to leave. Instead of taking the order off the bill, they brought us a side of potatoes that were warm (not hot). I was almost more offended that the manager decided to only take $12 off of our $160 bill than anything at all. As someone who works in the service industry, this was disgusting behavior at best and I am ashamed of the service and managers here and will be telling friends to avoid this place at all costs. read more

Came here to say the food itself was freaking good- the pastrami was so delicious! But like other reviewers said, the rye bread completely falls apart. It can't hold a sandwich. I took one bite and had to eat the rest with a fork. If you have "rye" in the name of the restaurant, you really need to come correct with some rye bread. I'll have to try the challah next time. The best pastrami I have ever had. Excellent knish, flakey crust and everything seasoning is creative and yummy. Great sandwich BUT you should definitely order it untoasted! Toasting that homemade bread is a sin. Drowning the crunchy knish is also a sin, so ask for gravy side or better yet, dry. It doesn't need gravy!!! Salad was plentiful but order dressing on side so it's not soaked. Latkas are dense but amazing! read more

Food made up for the service. Would def go back. Had a great brunch under the patio covering after they tried to sit us in the sweating sun and couldn't enjoy our time until we moved- staff seemed bothered that we wouldn't go through the sun beating down on us and asked to move to the outdoor covered patio where there was opening seating but bc we are a party of 2 we didn't matter. Besides that- food was great! Hopefully they improve the service as the food to table took over 30 mins. read more

Honestly had one of the best breakfast meals of my life. Their challah bread Monte Cristo is insane. I split it with my grown son and it was more than enough. If you can get Brigitte as your server you will have the best experience withy the best food ...and a smile. Love this place, love what they are doing with vibe and design. My husband raved about this place so I decided to pick up lunch from there while we had company in town. I called and called and called for over an hour. No one ever picked up. So, I drove the 20 minutes there and placed my order in person. We ordered matzoh ball soups, sandwiches and a salad. I was told it would be about 20 minutes for my order--so I went to the car. In 20 minutes I came back and was told they were finalizing our order and boxing it up. I stood at the register waiting... and waiting... and waiting. All in all it took well over an hour to get my order (which I would have gotten going earlier if they would have answered the phone). The brisket dips I'm told were greasy and had too much cheese. Matzoh ball soup was good but not great. My salad was ridiculously small for $19-and they forgot my dressing. There was just no sense of urgency with the crew and not a whole lot of customer service either. In talking with another patron, she said she has similarly had no luck reaching them on the phone--so I don't even know why they list a number if they don't intend to answer. All in all my experience was terrible. Never again--which is a shame because this place has potential. read more

Will not be back due to service. The food is good but not good enough to deal with the lack of service. I have been here several times and each time the service continues to decline. They will seat you immediately for the most part but then you have to wait 10-15 minutes for a waiter to come to your table. It's unclear if they need to hire more waiters or if the waiters are intentionally ignoring your table. The staff is friendly but do not actually wait on you. Ordered coffee and then had to get up and take the sugar from another table. The food took about 45 minutes to come out. I asked for ketchup and they handed me a bottle that was empty and the waiter knew it was empty. A party that arrived after us left before our food came which makes me believe it was intentionally bad service. No refills when I needed it and they didn't even come and ask if we needed anything so we couldn't ask for a water. I had to get up and go to the front to finally get the bill. There's lots of restaurants in the area so will not be returning after this experience. read more

Earlier in the week my niece sent me a link saying we had a new Jewish style deli in oceanside Gave it a try today I ordered 1/2 pastrami sandwich with Side of onion rings and also ordered cup of matzoh ball soup Sandwich : pastrami was heated and the oils drenched the rye bread. The pastrami is better than what I buy at Vons but not as good as DZ Akins The pastrami is better than Subway ( not by much) but more expensive than subway The onion rings ok not the best I've had but not the worse The soup was ok but not as good as DZ The broth was lacking flavor, had very little carrots and stuff. The matzoh ball was OK. Not as good as DZ Akins, or even my nieces. Yes my niece made matzoh ball soup a few months back and it had more taste. I will give them a second try as the food was ok. I won't order the soup again. But will try the pastrami again this time cold. read more

We live in Oceanside and have been wanting to try this place. First time there and we ordered the pastrami pusher with latke, cast iron shakshouska eggs, and acai bowl, To Go (and I left a tip). I normally don't write reviews but wanted to warn everyone that: (1) you get the tiniest acai bowl I've ever seen with barely any acai, especially for $16, definitely not worth it. (2) They didn't give us utensils or napkins so we weren't able to eat our food at the park like we had planned (and didn't realize until we were at the park already). (3) The bottom part of the bread on the pastrami was soggy, not worth $18. (4) The shakshouska is supposed to come with bread but we didn't get any. Really bad first impression. read more

Wanted to like this place, but kind of disappointing. Service was really good though! We got the Latkes, jubano & the Ruben. The bread was super thick and under baked and the Latkes were so thick and heavy.. kind of like a heavy mashed potato cake and not crispy.. bummer! First, the positive: our waitress was fabulous (Alexandra M, according to the receipt), as was another waitress we briefly interacted with. Next, the middlin': Food was tasty, but not spectacular. For the money, I want memorably above the competition. Finally, the reason for only two stars: The first impression staff. There were three gals at the POS counter just inside the door. When we walked in one was answering another customers questions, while two chatted amongst themselves. I made eye contact with each of them, two more than once. At one point all three of them were just standing there talking to each other, while ignoring us. It took several minutes for any of the three to acknowledge us and ask if we wanted a table. BAD first impression to give customers. Based on other reviews, I doubt management or the business owners read these reviews, but I wish they would, particularly since some staff provide excellent service, while the first impression staff is lazy, at best, and/or just don't care. That can't be good for business. For the money, the food isn't good enough to make up for poor customer service. Thank goodness for the excellent waitress. read more

I'm sadly updating my previous, rave review of Rye's and Grind. They've changed the menu significantly, at least for the sandwiches, and not for the better. My husband and I love this place and want them to do well, but it feels like someone who's never been in an actual deli redesigned their sandwich menu. Pastrami Reuben on a French roll? Actually, now all the deli sandwiches are served on a French roll. I had my usual pastrami with Cole slaw, Swiss and thousand island dressing. Their sandwiches used to be piled high with meat, this time I essentially had a cole slaw sandwich with a bit of pastrami. There is a reason that no one has cole slaw sandwiches, trust me. My daughter had the turkey stuffing and Brie sandwich on gluten free bread that was the size of her palm. For $18! Husband's turkey bacon avo was still pretty good. Service as always was great, but in spite of coming here a few times a month for lunch, and referring everyone I know to do the same, I definitely won't be back for lunch. We'll give brunch a try, which has been consistently great, but whoever redesigned the lunch menu did Rye's and Grind a great disservice. It makes me so sad. read more

Overall, really good. We got the matzo ball soup, the Big O, and the sand which that is like an Italian sub. The soup was very good. Tasted like mom would make. I do like a lighter matzo ball, but most restaurants make the heavier ones because they look prettier. The sandwiches were really good. I am wondering it they make most of their meats because the turkey and ham were so good and like nothing I have ever tasted. They make their own bread, which is a nobel venture, but sadly, it is not as well done as a real bread bakery. The Dutch Crunch was too dense. It tasted like a bread that a cook might make in a home kitchen, not restaurant caliber. Would have enjoyed our sandwiches more if there were better bread. I'm vet all, though, the food was really good! The insides of the sandwich made up for the bread. If I owned the place, I would either switch bread recipes or order bread from outside, that would make this place 5 stars! read more

With high hopes for some good Jewish style deli food, I'm sorry to say we had a very disappointing meal. We ordered a pastrami on rye and a Reuben sandwich. It was great to watch the bread maker behind the glass pull beautiful loves out of the bread oven. It was good entertainment while we waited a very, very long time for our food. Our sandwiches arrived and at first glance looked wonderful, but the homemade rye was so dry and over toasted , (I don't think it was grilled) the bread crumbled into chunks and the crusts fell off as soon as we picked them up. The meats were shaved thin like prosciutto. The corned beef was good, the pastrami was dry. The Swiss on the Reuben wasn't melted. The potato pancake we ordered was like a hockey puck..very dense and heavy. The rosemary potatoes were good. one more thing, if you just want water with your meal, order bottled because their's had a chemical taste. I don't think we'll be returning. read more

Great good. A real deli sandwich with an LTH type twist. Nothing like in it in the Oside beach area.

We were seated around 12pm and ordered our food at about 10 minutes later, after having to track down who our waiter was. After ordering, it took about 20 minutes to get the black drip coffee we ordered and were never asked if we wanted a refill. We had to go refill our own coffees a few times at the dispenser by the bar. We continued to be ignored by the waiter until about 1:00pm when we still didn't receive our food and had now been sitting there for an hour and had to ask our waiter when the food would be ready. She just said "it should be out any minute" no apologies for the wait or anything. Once the food arrived it was warm but the bread on the pastrami sandwich was severely drenched in oil to the point it couldn't be eaten. If you are looking for something different, then try this place. The portion sizes were big and the prices were low. If you're looking for a Jewish Deli, don't bother. They do try very hard to make everything I tried fairly decent. I give them a lot of credit for making almost everything from scratch. The corned beef was just ok, same with the brisket. The rye bread was too soft and was falling apart. The latke was a preformed puck, the outside was very dark, like from being in the fryer too long. It didn't taste like any latke I have ever had. I ordered the Lox Benedict and my husband got the Monte Cristo, both were very mediocre. Our food was cold and the yolk in my poached egg was cooked, leading me to believe our food may have been sitting in the kitchen for quite some time as we also did have to wait about 40 min for it. The Lotkes and salmon were good but wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. We also ordered the Apple cinnamon chai latte and that was very delicious. The best breakfast restaurant in north county (breakfast at San Luis Rey Bakery cafe is good too, but no alcohol ). The Sunday bloody mary is the best classic bloody mary ever. The Larry David coffee drink is fabulous (I like foam so I get it hot). And the food! I've never ordereed anything I didn't like here. The pastrami hash is off the chmain, bagel breakfast sandwiches too. I haven't had lunch here yet, but I've seen the lunch platters being served all around me, and they look delicious (particularly their loaded pastrami tater tots!). read more

Once I heard about Rye's and Grind I made it over there to take out a pastrami sandwich. It was pretty good. We have a friend up from Menlo park who incidentally have a speciality Pastrami Restaurant in town with pretty good pastrami, We wanted to take her to a "West Coast Deli". Let me tel you we got a table right away. It took us a little while to order,all 3 of us are 75, then we ordered. We waited and waited and waited. While we waited about 15 minutes another couple came in after we ordered, placed their order then we waited and waited and waited another 15 or so then the other couple got their order and we waited some more. I went to the young lady waiter and asked what the problem was and she said the kitchen. We waited at least 45 minutes before we received our order. The food was pretty good. Not really a Deli. Canters is a Deli. I called the waiter over and told her I was only leaving a $1 tip. The tip was not against her but the only way to show dissatisfaction to the kitchen was to tip the waiter low and she could complain to the kitchen. making us wait that long is not a way to treat customers. read more

Not the jewish deli food you were hoping for. The rye bread crumbles whether toasted or not. The pickles have a weird taste. The potato latke and potato salad leaves you scratching your head wondering what is going on because this isn't right. The size of servings is great, but lacks in so many other ways. I had high hopes that Ryes and Grind would be a great place to have lunch with my cousins. Unfortunately it was a letdown. I had the corned beef sandwich with coleslaw. The rye bread was not what I expected. It was falling apart making the sandwich hard to eat and lacked the density of a good rye. The coleslaw lacked enough dressing to give it flavor so just boring. My cousins ordered the potatoe latkes which were also a big letdown. They lacked the crunch of a good latke, tasted bready and lacked the texture of a good potatoe pancake. Too bad. I don't know why they didn't use good rye bread or decided to change latkes into something else. I will not be back. read more
