I got in the car on Thursday morning and hoped to get my son to nursery school and to a tire place safely. I saw East Neck Auto and turned around after I bought my son to school to drop in. They took my car real fast (which I always appreciate) and had the tire fixed (maybe plugged) I'm clueless with car tires and auto stuff in maybe a half hour probably less. It was $20 to fix the tire and I appreciated the honesty of the business. I was expecting to pay a few hundred for some new tires. I gave the guy a $10 tip said thank you and promised a good review for their service which I am writing now. As a woman it feels good to know of honest shops out there especially when it comes to cars. I'm getting a divorce so if my father, brother or brother-in-law (maybe future boyfriend if I get one) aren't going to be around to come with me for a car repair or car service it's good to know of a shop out there that won't be looking to snow me because I'm a female. Two days ago, I had my inspection done and they had found that the cabin air filter was sloppily installed and was smushed into place. I have attached a picture of what it looked like. So that same day, i returned to have my oil changed and confronted one of the mechanics there and explained the situation. I asked that they replace the air filter because of what happened and the mechanic said it was no problem. Seems great. After they had performed the service, it came to billing. The mechanic said, "Alright, it will be so and so for the oil change and $40 for the filter." I said, "No! This was done incorrectly previously and theres no way you're charging me for this right now Etc." The mechanic replied, "Haha, I was joking! Just wanted to see the look on your face." Oh hahahhahaa so you're lying to me and doing your best to be a cheap scumbag trying to reap the most money possible out of me. Nice! He ended up not charging me but he 100% had the intention to. The guy who would have been able to tackle the job was recovering from wrist surgery, so dave recommended another business which i had the work done at. While on the lift at daves though, they noticed that one of the caliper bolts was missing (of course...because when i had my brake job done, i had it done at mavis and they forgot to put the bolt back). They secured with a new bolt for me (free of charge) and that annoying slight rattle i was hearing when hitting a bump was gone. I will be back to dave for any car issues based on that alone.

I had a comprehensive ac evaluation at PepBoys in Lindenhurst a couple of days earlier, was told the Freon was full and they found no leaks but the "compressor did not engage". The ECV issue is common with that model and year. I decided to shop around as I have been looking for a competent and honest repair shop since my go to guy of 15 years sold his shop. Understandably Cosmos Auto wanted to confirm the issue before providing a price and told me to bring my car in for a free ac evaluation. Nice clean place and people pleasant. I waited in their comfortable waiting room for them to evaluate the ac. After a while a guy came out and told me I did not need an ECV valve or a compressor and they found no leaks but the "Freon was absolutely empty" contrary to what I was told at PepBoys. The cost with tax was approximately $250. They added, though they didn't think so, if there was a "minor undetectable" leak, a dye in the Freon would reveal this in a few months. I was excited to finally find a competent honest replacement auto shop. I told family, friends and work associates and had plans to bring my son in law' s car in for engine work and my nephew's car too. I drove my car to work the next morning about 12 miles, ac worked beautifully and it worked driving home too. The next morning I turned the ac on and it blew hot air even hotter than it did before the Freon fill up. I called Cosmos Auto and a woman told me that the dye in the Freon is to determine undetectable leaks in the ac. Since the ac lasted no more than 24 hours if it was leaking, it was not a minor leak requiring dye to detect it. This appears to be a tactic to force customers to come back to an auto shop for expensive ac repairs. Needless to say, my search for a competent, honest repair shop continues.
