Very delicious ceviche, reminiscent of ceviche I had in Peru
    Ethel C.

Recommended by a friend originally from Central America who said the ceviche here is great- definitely agree and glad I found out about this randomly authentic place. It's so close to East Rock by car, just across the bridge. Fish Ceviche was plentiful, and spice level was appetizing, and had same lime-citrusy flavor profile as ceviche I had in Lima. It also came with some yucca (white root veg) and sweet potato that was surprisingly sweet and added to the yummy soft chew. No off flavor, no gummyness. The sauce for the lomo saltado (typical Peruvian beef dish) was really yummy and enjoyed drowning my crispy fries in them. The beef was a little on the chewy side, not really sure why but on the upside I didn't feel greasy-terrible afterwards. There were these fat clam ceviche things that were really good too, with green shells. Fresh, chunky, and citrusy..! Not a lot of mom and pop places do this, but the tables had clean and pretty table clothes, dishes were all nicely plated, pretty cute place. Everything didn't take long as well, and owners were big on smiles, bonus if you know some Spanish.

The kindest owners you'll ever meet! It seems like a family run operation. Unfortunately I only got to visit during corona so I had to get take out, but man would I love to stay and order a few dishes. The seafood dish I ordered was of the best quality, super fresh. And when I came to pick it up the owner gave me a taste test of fried mussels they were brewing up in the kitchen. Out of all the places I've been in the New Haven area this place gets the top spot for quality service and exceptionally fresh food. Ill be back and I'll be bringing friends!

Writing this review as I devour leftovers just as satisfied as I was last night. For a party of one my eyes were clearly bigger than my stomach, but oh I tried to eat it all. The flavor, the portions, and the service were great. I would 100% recommend Sabor Peru.

Really good food. Really friendly people. Nice hidden gem waiting for you to come check it out!

    Anticucho

I'm from out of town but my friends wanted to try some Peruvian food. As a Peruvian I'm super picky when it come to Peruvian restaurants. We ordered anticuchos, ceviches as appetizers. They were delicious. Seasoned so well. I ordered the lomo saltado, while my friends ordered the chaufa de pollo and trucha. Everything was so well done. In addition the pisco sours we're really well made also. I highly recommend this restaurant!

    Pescado Pecado a Lo Macho

The food was not good for my taste! I got pescado a lo macho and it tasted like a bottle of chili powder was dropped into it. My husband got arroz chaufa and we were not amused either. If you want good Peruvian food I recommend going to Norwalk/Stamford. The serves was good, but the place needs an upgrade.

The food was amazing!! Fresh ingredients, made from scratch, big portions and it tasted delicious!! Very happy we stopped by there during our roadtrip. We

The service has also been excellent, and it's hard to complain about the beautiful patio seating overlooking the water. Now, let's get to the meat of the issue--no pun intended. My girlfriend ordered the NY Strip steak medium rare. It arrived completely well done--not even remotely close to what was ordered. We politely asked our server (who was great throughout the entire experience) if the kitchen could remake it medium rare. A few minutes later, a replacement steak arrived that was somehow even more overcooked than the first one. At that point, I asked to speak with a manager. We were initially offered 50% off the steak, but in what world should anyone pay even a penny for a $40 steak that was overcooked twice? Unfortunately, the manager was combative from the start and essentially implied that he didn't believe my girlfriend hadn't eaten the steak. Anyone who enjoys steak rare or medium rare knows that a well-done hockey puck isn't exactly appetizing. After he stormed off, the steak was ultimately removed from the bill. However, the entire interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive and unprofessional. As a former restaurant manager myself, I would have immediately comped the steak and apologized for the mistake. In fact, given that the kitchen failed twice to cook a steak anywhere near the requested temperature, I would have strongly considered comping the entire meal out of embarrassment. It's unfortunate because the food is generally very good and the location is beautiful. What should have been a simple service recovery turned into a disappointing experience because of how management handled the situation.

The view from the deck was also excellent, and the cocktails themselves were delicious. A lot of the appetizers were very good. The tuna tartare and the mussel curry were both inspired dishes; the mussels in the sauce had great flavor, though the portion sizes overall felt small. The blistered snap peas with preserved lemon were also delicious. That said, for a place with "oyster" in the name, we expected a wider or higher-quality selection, perhaps including some from Canada, rather than the fairly standard options from CT and MA. Unfortunately, the main dishes missed the mark for us and didn't offer enough food. The sea bass was overcooked. the accompanying lima beans weren't cooked all the way through, and the dish lacked depth of flavor. The shrimp main also fell short, with the shrimp having a very odd, mushy bland flavor. To finish, the pot de crème had so much cream and so little actual chocolate that there was almost no chocolate flavor. On a separate note, navigating the QR code menu was pretty obnoxious. Restaurants should really just offer traditional paper menus; people stare at screens all day and come out to engage with each other, not look at a phone again, and constantly have it on the table. While I appreciate Fair Haven Oyster's creative concepts, their tinned fish with pickled sides, and their great starters, the execution on the mains and the portion sizes left something to be desired, especially at these price points. This was probably our sixth time going to Fairhaven Oyster. We've been going over the past few years and my overall takeaway is that I will definitely return for the drinks, the great atmosphere, and some appetizers, but will not be ordering mains.

They have a whole vegan menu, but there were also some vegetarian things on the main menu so I stick with that. The beet salad was incredible. Huge portion, and some very delicious blue cheese which was in the dressing. It was very filling and I still had some to take back to my hotel. The wild mushroom "bolognese" (meatless) was tasty too, but it had a little too much of an herb (thyme?). Otherwise the meal was so very delicious and the setting was beautiful. It was founded by restaurateurs Daniel Kay, Marc Knight, and Robert Bolduc. Knight and Bolduc had previously had success when they opened the popular southwestern restaurant Geronimo Tequila Bar & Southwest Grill in the Elm City in November 2007. Kay had spent nearly 15 years serving as the president of Connecticut Fluid Power. In 2015, the three business partners came together to open a new venture at New Haven's historic City Point. The location (on the ground level below the Pequonnock Yacht Club) had been home to several restaurants for decades (most recently to Sage American Grill & Oyster Bar). After a complete remodel, they opened Shell & Bones. The trio brought in the award-winning executive chef Arturo Franco Camacho to serve as the culinary director. My wife and I recently had a lunch date at Shell & Bones. The restaurant had been on our bucket list for some time. We loved the nautical theme of the decor as well as the amazing views of New Haven Harbor. We were seated in the indoor patio; it was a little too cold and rainy during our visit for al fresco dining. For drinks, I ordered "The Breakfast Bloody Mary" (Ostreida oyster vodka, Tres Agaves Bloody Mary mix, chorizo, cocktail shrimp, bacon, cornichon, olives) while my wife had the "Lavender Limoncello Spritzer". The cocktails were just as visually pleasing as they were delicious. From the raw bar, we shared four "Lucky Lady" oysters, which were super light and smooth. For our entrées, I had the "Crab Cake B.L.T." (sweet & spicy bacon, romaine, tomato, chipotle mayo, brioche roll) and my wife had the "Shell & Bones Lobster Roll" (served hot w/ house-made Lobster Butter). For our sides, we both ordered "Hand Cut Truffle Parmesan Fries". My sandwich was bursting with flavor, my wife's lobster roll was one of the best we ever had, and the fries were just the icing on the cake. We looked over the dessert menu (which looked great), but we were way too full. We had a fantastic experience at Shell & Bones and look forward to returning!

I came on a Wednesday for the $17.99 lobster roll special and it was easily one of the best I've ever had. It is a quarter pound of lobster and you get actual lumps of claw and meat rather than the shredded stuff some other places serve. The butter it's sautéed in is seasoned delicately to accentuate the fresh lobster instead of covering up the taste. The portion was surprisingly large and it comes on a fresh bun that is lightly buttered and toasted. It even comes with a little cup of extra butter which I totally slathered on because I love butter! Every bite was so fresh and soft. The roll comes with fries and I did the optional $5 upcharge for the lobster bisque. That was also the best I've ever had because I've never seen bisque with such large chunks of lobster in it. It was just crazy good. Everything was well worth the price and I'd honestly come back even on days when it's not a special.
