This is a new cart that appears to have taken over the body of the Golden Saigon Pho cart. Checking out the menu, this place has potential. However, I was a little disappointed in the meal. I ordered the special, which was a Shawarma Plate (chicken). It came with rice, hummus, bread, and tabouli. The presentation was decent, I mean, the meal looked pretty good but it was lacking. The chicken didn't have enough spice to it, it was somewhat bland. I could pick out a few of the key spices used but nothing really stood out. Every now and then I would get a bite and think "that's what I'm looking for" but, it wasn't consistent throughout the dish. The rice was not bad but again, kind of plain. Going in for the hummus I got a good taste of garbanzos but not much else. I was hoping for a tinge of tahini, garlic, or lemon (or all of them) but just couldn't find what I wanted in it. The bread was also lacking in much substance, just your average flat bread (not bad but, when the hummus isn't up to par you're really just eating bread and garbanzos). The rescuing component of the meal was the tabouli (or tabbouleh to many). The parsley was there with a bit of mint and enough tomato to accent the bulgur. I actually really enjoyed the salad. In fact, mixing the salad in with a bit of the shawarma and hummus made for a decent makeshift sandwich with the bread. All in all, they need to work on the balance of spices and flavor in the food. Shooting for what they did with the tabbouleh would be a good start. As it stands now, just too many bland or mediocre components to the whole thing. Being a pretty new cart, I'm hoping they can bring it up a notch as I'm always looking for a good Mideastern place to eat. read more

(Found this cart at Green Castle food pod -- NE 20th and Everett) This is a halal cart with a good-sized menu. Pictures are posted next to the menu to give one an idea of what the food looks like. Food porn at its finest. You can get a plate or a wrap on several of the options. I simply got a simple $5 lamb gyro here (chicken option also available). Very reasonable price and perfect as street food. As usual, I am partial toward the thicker pitas for gyros because, for me, it stands up to a substantial amount of food packed inside. Juicy, delicious strips of lamb and fresh vegetables. I hoped for feta -- even if it costs a little extra -- but at least at the time of my visit, there was no such option. The tzatziki could use just a bit more seasoning to compensate for the lack of feta. Overall, I'd say it was still a success. The Zataar Pizza ($3) also caught my eye. It's an Arabic food popular in many Middle Eastern countries. Saw some pics online and it looks pretty damn good. I'll have to give that a try someday. The fresh squeezed orange juice is really good here. Probably not the first sentence you would expect when reading the review for Arabic food. I am always a bit hesitant when a place tells me they have "fresh squeezed" orange juice. Nine times out of ten they give you a glass of Tropicana. Tropicana tastes like what I imagine the ass of an orange would taste like if oranges had asses. I'm just saying. Lets move on quickly to the food. I ordered the Kafta plate. It came with rice, hummus and tabouli along with the bread with the name that escapes me. Someone want to help me out? The presentation was nice. The food was plentiful. Enough for me to eat most at lunch and have a small snack for later in the day. $6 gets you most plates here. The OJ will set you back $2 for a 12 oz and $3 for a 16 oz. Get the OJ though. If you like OJ, trust me, you will like this. The woman squeezes it right there at the window. The Kafta balls were quite tasty. There were 6 or 7 and that along with the rice and the rest made the meal filling, but not to the point where I needed a stomach pump. I had never seen this cart before today and see that there are only 2 other reviews. Apparently it is relatively new to this pod. Hopefully a few more reviews will get them some more business. It is nice to see something other than Thai food pop up over here. read more

She's been moved to this new location for about a month, and says business is slow but her old faithful customers are finding her.... Super nice lady makes a mean gyro, for only 5 bones. I found her ingredients to be fresh, light, and tasty. The gyro meat was cut super thin, which made grilling it to crispy perfection a snap, and very fast. The baba ganouj is also very good, and apparently so is the hummus, as it was sold out the day I stopped by there. For two dollars more than the gyro, you can get lamb or chicken schwarma, which is carved directly off the bone, as opposed to the gyro meat which is processed, frozen, preformed strips (which was still quite tasty--see above). read more

Seems to be a new food cart pod with space in #nepdx, Cully neighborhood, but this one caught my eye while biking down Cully. Ordered a falafel, $5. Decent size, light, fresh, had flavor. Was alright and would go back. I give it a 3+, (may have more to say when I try other dishes). read more

Last minute lunch plans brought me here. I had the falafel plate, which was nothing to write home about. The falafel wasn't really as flavorful as most that I've had. The hummus could use some more flavor also. But the OJ is definitely quite tasty and hand squeezed. I think you can also get it with carrot. That was the highlight of the meal for me. This was my first visit to a food cart on the west side. Not sure if I'd visit for the food, but would definitely make a stop again for the OJ! read more

The chicken shwarma is the BEST. The servings are also generous -- it's really 2 meals. Other dishes are also delicious -- my favorite cart on this block by far. I must have their food at least every 2 weeks -- you'll be craving it too. read more

I was so excited to try the lamb shoarma (shwarma? shawarma?) which I haven't had in ages. Unfortunately, the lamb was very tough and chewy, and I ended up throwing out half my food. They don't sell enough lamb to have some on one of those big ol' skewers and slice it fresh for every order. The woman at the counter was super nice, so I'll be back to try the chicken version. read more

sigh...it should have been so much more. I had the falafel sandwhich, le sigh..again it should have been so much better. it had a good pita, good hummus, nice fresh veggies, but the falafel was not fresh and microwaved. perhaps if it was later in the day it would have been ok? would it have? no, microwaved food really? what made it sad was that it had all components of it being good, the falafel itself had good flavor, it just wasn't fresh. oh well. read more

I tried the chicken shwarma sandwich. The meat was cooked perfectly, had great texture, but the flavor was pretty lackluster. Would have liked some spice or some pepper or something. But the menu had some good sounding choices, and you can add a side of grape leaves to your dish for only an extra dollar. Maybe I'll give it another try later. read more

This food cart was in Cully for a month very nice having something other than mexican. The food was good a little slow to come out but I don't mind waiting if it was worth it. The falafel were awesome as well as the lamb kabob and rice but I did not care for the hummus. The hummus has a weird flavor the texture is nice but it is the first hummus that I would not eat. read more

This place is okay. It's not bad but not great here either. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate. Honestly it tasted nothing like the shawarma I've had in the past. However that doesn't mean it wasn't good. To me it was pretty yummy - but not shawarma yummy, but still yummy. The rice they used was really good and flavorful. The plate also came with hummus which was also good and a salad that wasn't that great. The portions are big enough for two people. The owners we extremely nice and helpful. I would definitely come back again but only if I was in the area and wanted a big plate of some yummy rice/carbs. But I wouldn't plan a whole day around this. read more

Great falafel sandwich and amazing fresh juiced orange and carrot juice

My favorite things here are the hummus, the baba ghanouj, and the tabbouleh. And the juice is _really_ good too, the other reviewer is right! I also like the entrees, especially the shwarma-- the chicken is very tender and juicy, not dry like it so often is. I find it very flavorful, so perhaps the recipe has changed since other reviewers wrote. But I prefer lighter food and the baba and hummus are distinctive here. The hummus is full of the good flavor of the chickpeas (the owner says he makes it from dried beans, not canned, and you can taste it). The baba is to die for, different than any I've had before-- smoky and garlicky and minty and awesome! Kibbeh is also an unusual treat they make here, with hand-ground beef tucked inside little bulgur-and-beef torpedo shaped shells. So there are good things for meat eaters too. But don't miss the baba! read more

I'm a fan of the gyro sandwich--I've ordered it 3 times and it's really delish. I've heard the Kofta plate is really good and will try that next. Funny about the rave reviews about the orange juice. I will definitely check that out! read more
