We love Sabroso! We are regulars at this point. I prefer the St. Ann location to the Maplewood location as it is quieter and plays better music. I usually order the Chile Rellano, which is cheesy and delicious. The sauce is the best part. We also always order the chips and salsa, you can tell the salsa is made fresh because it's always a little different but always good. The red salsa is nice and smoky while the green is fresh and has a bite to it. The beans and rice are the best of any Mexican restaurant in the area. The St. Ann location has a liquor license now which is great. Service is always good and prices are fair. read more

Like for the FIRST time in St. Louis, my fish taco actually had a FISH in it! CRAZY, I know!!! I generally do not like corn tortillas (sorry), but these were good!!! Five stars on authenticity, quality of ingredients. Snob comments: fish was a bit (just a bit) greasy. Sauce on fish was def salty. Refried black beans had zero seasoning, only a bit of queso fresco on top. No anything to season that I could detect. Hot sauce was boring - not hot, not flavorful. Less salt; flavor your beans; get some boom boom hot sauce - and it would be 5 stars all around. Would I return for another try? Yes - but maybe the slightly more expensive Maplewood location. Sabroso is an unassuming gem, off the beaten path in the middle of St. Ann, across from northwest plaza. Upon arriving, I was swiftly greeted by friendly staff, who promptly seated me, and took my drink order. I ordered a pineapple aguas frescas, not too sweet and it was quite the treat, with strong pineapple forward flavor. The waitress, who was also the owner's daughter, was very accommodating, pleasantly kind, very patient, and also understanding of my unique requests, she even struck up a conversation about sauces with me, when she saw I brought a personal favorite hot sauce. I also observed her going above and beyond to accommodate the request of a table across from me, where the patrons were struggling to convey exactly what they were looking for in their meal. I ordered birria nachos as a starter, which was genuinely mouthwateringly good, every bite I had was rich in flavor and spice, and had me excited for the next, additionally some delicious verde salsa and red pepper salsa was provided to add some extra character to the plate where desired. I also ordered a bean and cheese burrito, quesabirria, and enchiladas de mole. The burrito had some of the most flavorful and well seasoned black beans I've had. The consome provided with the quesabirria was delicious, and soaked into the quesabirria perfectly, I also ordered a side of the house made mole, which I added to the quesabirria for some extra oomph, letting the quesabirria melt in my mouth, I was overwhelmed with the wonderful seasoning and flavors. The enchiladas de mole came smothered in their house made mole and queso blanco, you get your choice of meat with the enchiladas, I ordered birria with the enchiladas as well, which really paired perfectly with the mole and queso. Overall my experience at Sabroso was wonderfully memorable and I'd recommend anyone looking for a memorable experience and meal visit. I have been to Sabroso twice now. First of all this has to be a tough location. It's a strip center across from the part of Northwest Plaza that is now a St. Louis County Government Center. At one time there was an AMC movie theater in this center. The first time I was here I ordered queso and chips followed by the chilaquiles with carnitas and sunny side up egg. I thought this was an excellent meal. The pork and egg were perfectly cooked and I loved the fried tortilla and spicy sauce. I was so excited about how good this meal was. On my second trip I ordered the Tamales with the birria meat. The masa was really good and perfectly steamed. I did not care for the queso panela inside the tamales or the birria beef that was not as tender as it should have been. I didn't really like the queso on top of the tamales either or the queso I ordered for an appetizer. It was not hot and the texture was off. I really like the red salsa or hot sauce they make and bring you upon request. I'm sure I'll be back because I'm still thinking about those chilaquiles. read more

The best hidden gem has been found! Santos's Cocina Mexicana (SCM) is another hidden gem anyone who favors simple traditional flavorful dishes. Almost past by SCM as it's in the corner spot of a shopping center. Once we arrived, SCM welcomed us with powerful aromas which made our visit exciting. Menu had traditional dishes from tacos, tortas and classic dishes like carne asada and Mole. Appetizers is what caught our several and we decided on the Birria Nachos. By far best Nachos in the St. Louis vicinity, period. Covered with deliciously tender birria that was perfectly seasoned, nachos also came with blanco queso, pickled jalapeños/cerranos, and a large portion of guacamole. Anyone coming to visit SCM and try this dish is going to be truly impressed. We decided on burritos for this visit (aka, we're coming back!). Wife went with the Chicken burrito, a large burrito with chicken and tinga seasoning, rice, beans covered with pico de gallo. Wife ate every bite and finished her dish before I could. We normally order beans and rice, but based on seeing the portion size of the burritos, we opted for no sides on the visit. I went with the Al Pastor burrito another delicious blend of seasoned pork, pineapple, potato , chorizo, onions and cheese. Best damn burrito I've had in a long time! To close out our visit we tried their tres leches cupcakes, a smaller version of the traditional cake served. Everything we tried was exceptionally delicious! As mentioned earlier SCM has plenty of seating options, but do recommend calling ahead if you're looking to bring a large party. Restaurant was clean and tables were serviced timely. My friend and I went to visit your establishment again recently for the first time after 3 years. We wanted to give you another try since last time you had a very limited vegetarian menu. While we looked over the menu we ordered chips and salsa, a soda, and my friend ordered water. I asked the young waitress if the beans were vegetarian. She did not know. She went to ask and came back and said no they are not. My friend asked a question about something on the menu and she did not know the answer and did not offer to go find out. After looking over the menu we decided not to dine there and go to another local Mexican restaurant in the area. We let her know and asked for the bill. We had only eaten half the chips and I drank half my soda. I was a bit surprised when she charged us the full amount. Most Mexican restaurants in the area offer free chips and salsa anyway. I had a wonderful meal at the Maplewood location several months ago. I thought that I would try the St. Ann location. I had the Chile Relleno and my friend had the same. It was precooked days ago and barely warmed up. It was not even luke warm. The cheese was not melted and was hard. Our waitress did not return after she delivered our food. She was busy with other customers. I mentioned that it was cold when she delivered our checks. She apologized. I suggested that she let the chef know for the next customer. "Wow!" If Yelp would let me get away with it I think that one word would sum up my feelings after trying Sabroso today for lunch. I stumbled upon Sabroso a few days ago when picking up a late night pizza and immediately wanted to try it. One of my favorite hobbies is trying out new restaurants. Since they are closed on Mondays I had to wait until lunch today. I was absolutely floored with the experience. Upon entering you are greeted with a cafeteria like setup. The staff here were fantastic and seemed genuinely excited when I told them it was my first time here. They had me try many of the entrees on the menu and everything I had was delicious. I settled on the Plato Especial, which is two entrees and two side items. For my sides I did beans and rice. For my entrees I chose Birria and Cochinita Pibil. The Birria they have here is beef instead of goat which is what I was expecting however it was still fantastic. The Cochinita Pibil was also wonderful, perfectly seasoned. The rice and beans were also fantastic. I had flour tortillas with my meal and ate about half of the meat by itself and the other half folded into tacos. The man behind the counter also gave me a small side of chips and salsa to sample. I enjoyed the taste of the salsa; however, I prefer spicier salsa. I ordered Jamaica (hibiscus tea), for my drink and was very happy with it. The flavor was much stronger than I am used to however I really enjoyed it. The entire establishment looked very clean and multiple employees stopped by my table to make sure everything was good. These employees really try their best to make you feel welcome and I appreciate that. My only complaint would be that everything I had was very mild. The flavor was there however I wish there was a bit of a burn on my tongue. I am not going to deduct for that though as the flavor was fantastic and next time I come I will just bring some hot sauce with me or ask if they have any. read more

Wow, that was tasty! I read a good review in the from the Post-Dispatch and decided to place a takeout order for on the way home. Glad I saw the review, because this gem is hidden away in an out-of-the way strip mall. Word of mouth is what will keep it successful, and it really deserves it. The birria and cochinita pibil were both deliciously marinated and flavorful, very tender shredded meats. Beans on the plate orders must be a refried black bean or pinto/black mix - whatever they are, they are darker than refried pinto, with a better flavor too. I threw in an order of chilaquiles as an afterthought, and they make a great meal in themselves. Think of them as deluxe nachos on steroids. Chips tossed in two of Sabroso's salsas, with crema, queso fresco, chopped onions, and then a fried egg (hard yolk) on the top. Really good. read more

This place e was absolutely amazing! We specifically scoured St. Louis and St. Charles County for birria tacos. Sabroso did NOT disappoint! We ordered Quesabirria tacos and empanadas and we were so happy we did. The consomme was very flavorful and but the tacos were fried and the taco filling was so moist, full of flavor and tender. The empanadas were filled with a good portion of chicken and served with a wonderful "slaw" that magically complimented the flavor. This restaurant was immaculate and clean but without all the frills. Frills not necessary if the food is good. I could tell that this owner takes great pride in his establishment, service and food is impeccable. This place is truly a hidden gem. From the time we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly server Karla, who seated us, brought out drinks (soda and water) and gave us menu selections to try. She was very personable and had a wonderful personality. The chef Miquel, brought out our food and was equally as friendly and engaging. They weren't very busy, but we didn't care our food was delicious! We will definitely be going back really soon and I cant wait to try the other recommendations given! Fabulous real Mexican restaurant, yes no liquor license but who cares here it's about great food! I had the quesabirra was fabulous! Wow, the consommé dipping sauce was incredibly complex, I drank the rest as a soup, yes it was that good. Had the chills Rellenos for main course, perfectly cooked with Oaxaca stuffed cheese. Also, tried the slow roasted pork entree, not carnitas, but shredded little heat fabulous flavor. Excellent! Both came with homemade flour tortillas, small but excellent! June 9, 2022 So the food at this place is AWESOME! It has awful location I. The back of 1/2 empty, nondescript strip mall o. South side of the old Northwest Plaza (now over priced county government center). Hard to find with bad signage. Interior is unmemorable but functional. It looks when you come in like you might order at counter but you don't. They have waitress service. I was incredibly suspicious because the hostess and waitress were gringos like myself and I am nothing more than pretentious faux hipster that wants "real Mexicans" serving Mexican food (what I mean by that is that I am an asshole). But I digress. I had been a few months before with a banker from north county but today I was lunching with Larry who is an even more pretentious foodie, but he can also (and does) really cook.Last time I got My standard mix of street tacos but I have made a decision that I need to be more adventurous. The street tacos were GREAT by the way. We were served chips and salsa with both regular salsa and verde (and I am starting to think that if they don't have verde. You should just leave) and the waitress (who was delightful but looked more south Grand than north county) warned us the verde might be too hot but it was just right with good, fresh chips. Larry ordered soMe sweet corn to start and although I hate mayonnaise, it was really delicious! Larry ordered something with carnitas and I ordered soMething with beef on waitresses recommendation and it was awesome. Rice was great with no peas and although I don't like Ranchito beans, they looked great. The beef was tender with tomatoes and so flavorful it melted in my mouth. It was so good I finished it all (which I never do) and shared a few bites with Larry who was also impressed. His carnitas was excellent and tender but paled I'm comparison to mine. Service was great and friendly. Restrooms were clean. Price was reasonable and food was unstoppable and I can't wait to go back. It is worth heading north and finding this place. Best Mexican food in St Louis, super glad to have found this place! My husband and I have tried countless Mexican restaurants ranging from hole in the wall to chains since moving to St Louis, and Sabroso's hands down has been the best. No comparison, the food is PHENOMENAL. The chips and salsa are top tier, served with both regular and spicy salsas to choose from. The street corn is amazing, we both order our own because we end up bickering over who gets the last bite if we attempt sharing. And our favorite, the quesabirria. The beef is perfectly tender, the cheese melted to perfection, and you get a side of consommé for dipping. Almost like a cross between a taco and a quesadilla, this is an absolute must try. My family and I have been to Sabroso a handful of times. I really find it heartwarming that they welcome you immediately upon entering. We were able to seat ourselves and were promptly given menus and our drink orders were taken. You do have to pay for chips & salsa and are given a mild roasted salsa and a salsa verde that has a little heat to it. The salsa verde was my favorite. I ordered two crispy tacos beef tacos that were good and my hubby ordered steak a la Mexicana which he really enjoyed. The agua de horchata was delicious as well.
