This reviews if for the Sacred Gallery. I went to see D. Randall Blythe's photography show "Show me what you're made of". Blythe is the lead singer of Lamb of God, he's a photographer and a writer. His new book "Dark Days" is due this summer and is a personal memoir of his time incarcerated in Czech Republic. I am always interested in all forms of art and I especially love to hear from the artist themselves. The photographs in the show had a lot of life and even the landscapes were full of emotion. I enjoyed that every photograph had a printed story underneath it. It's almost as if Mr.Blythe was there himself to explain every photograph. There was one specific photograph that as taken of a clock tower in Czech Republic. The reason he was incarcerated is because in 2010 there was a super fan who ran on to the stage and after Blythe pushed him away, the fan bumped his head and died. Blythe has since, then been acquitted. However, he did spend time behind bars for 37 days. And the photograph spoke volumes of his time. And the story attached was well written and so descriptive. I plan on reading the book after attending the photography show. I also enjoyed seeing the photographs of his world travels from Australia. The show is up 6/30/15 and I highly recommend stopping by. read more

We had a wonderful experience here! First of all the space is really nice. We like the Soho location, which is convenient. There is a Chase ATM nearby, which also helps! The shop is spacious, clean and inviting. There is a nice waiting area with chargers for your phone. The front desk staff was really nice. I liked the digital release they have you do on an iPad. Easy to do, one and done! There is also a water cooler and restroom available. The artists seem really happy here. Everyone seems to get along well and the vibe in the shop is good. The quality of work is top notch. We saw Michelle Santana and highly recommend her! Such a great talent. read more

I liked the history, that the founder helped to legalize tattooing in NYC in the 90s, and I liked that it had more of a high-end barbershop vibe than a grunge tattoo parlor. I had a guest artist, Carolina, do my tattoo. It came out GREAT! Aftercare has been easy and I've gotten tons of compliments on it. I told her I was terrified of needles, so she helped distract me during the process, which helped a lot. Everything was spotless, and everyone was super inviting. I'd definitely go back if I ever get another tattoo, and I highly recommend it to anyone searching for a place. Only complaint: the cost. It's a lot more expensive here than at other places (I probably could have paid around $200-$250 on a tattoo that cost me $380 with tip), but it's well worth it... you get what you pay for! read more

They don't make you feel like you don't belong if you don't have any tattoos/piercings. I've been here so many times that there's hardly another place I'd go to. My most recent experience was to get my Septum jewelry changed. Starr is super nice, super informative, professional and just a pleasure to be around. She pierced my septum, it was so quick and I had barely any pain. When I went back to change the jewelry after it healed, she was her usual friendly self and helped my choose a pretty piece by BVLA. Going to her when I get my helix pierced. I've also gotten tattooed by Nick and Andy B. Nick did two small wrist ones which came out beautifully, and Andy is doing my full sleeve. It's a pleasure getting tattooed by him, he's extremely talented, his machine is quiet as hell and he has a light but effective touch so the pain I'm in is bearable. Talking to him while I'm getting my piece done is a blast, he plays great music while he's working and he even thanked ME for choosing him to do my sleeve! I took my wife here today after a recommendation from a friend, and I couldn't be happier that I did. From beginning to end, this was an enjoyable, professional experience. After reviewing the information on the website, my wife decided she was a good candidate for a walk-in tattoo, so we arrived about an hour after the shop opened. We were greeted immediately upon entering, and the guy at the front desk (Chris?), asked a few questions about the kind of tattoo she wanted, and paired her up with an artist whose style would be compatible. Mark Ford, the artist, continued asking questions, and offered some excellent advice on size, composition, and concerns about how the tattoo would age. Based on this feedback, she was able to modify her original concept into a tattoo she would ultimately be even happier with. Once they agreed on the specifics, Mark was off to produce a sketch, and my wife proceeded to sign a paperwork. Everything was very thorough, and we received an aftercare packet with instructions and ointment. She was in the chair within minutes. Although she was initially told two hours, the whole process took just over an hour, which was a pleasant surprise. Mark had a gentle touch, and checked in from time to time to make sure she was doing alright. At the end, he explained that she had about 60 days to come back for a touch up free of charge if there was anything she was unhappy with (a shop policy, it turns out), and explained the aftercare instructions in detail. The shop was clean, (and huge!) and the layout was nice. The room we were in was separated from another room by adjustable screens for privacy when needed, and the high ceilings gave the shop an airy, open feel. The restrooms were both clean, which is a detail overlooked in a lot of other shops. I was allowed to sit in on my wife's tattoo (staying out of the way, of course). And I spotted Damien Echols hanging out, so that was pretty cool! This was just a completely different experience from the shop we've been to several times in Queens, where the front desk team had a terrible attitude, and the artists were unwilling to draw things for you (they preferred you chose flash off the wall, or brought in something for them to simply run through their stencil machine), or a shop in Brooklyn we wanted to visit, but where the artists took two weeks to reply to a simple e-mail. Sacred Tattoo by contrast, is run by a group of genuine professionals, who take their work seriously, but never try to intimidate you. The shop also had a great drama-free environment- the staff talked and joked easily, and ate lunch together at a communal table. Good vibes all around. We will both be back. (Yes, it's pricey. Highly, highly praise Rods Jimenez but make an appointment ASAP if interested as he has a long wait list. ___________ My god, this is a long delayed review. I started my piece with Rods back in August of 2014. To start with, Sacred Tattoo is a friendly and open minded shop. It is not your average street parlor with harsh lights and basic flash tattoos designs plastered all over the walls. Each artist has their own area on the floor where they not only display their tattoo work but also paintings, sculptures, and drawings. They have a gallery on their floor that displays different art pieces all throughout as well. In addition, they often get prestigious guest artists, too. I got a St. Christopher piece, I'll spare you the long details of what it means to me and yada yada, but I walked in in April 2014 for my consolation with three references of what I was looking for and where I wanted it. I had researched for nearly a year just to find the artist I wanted in NYC so I fully trusted Rods to make the best artistic decision. In order to better work with my body, we slightly adjusted the image and location and we started my first session which lasted three hours where Rods finished an outline and beginning of the detailing. I made the mistake of not immediately scheduling a second appointment and the receptionist didn't realized I was not finished with my piece, even though I still kept my deposit on file (must have not clicked), and when I called later that week for a follow up, he was already booked for another three months. So I had my second appointment right around November for another two hours in which Rods nearly finished the piece except for small details on the faces and the shading in the background. Finally, I finished my tattoo in June when I walked in for my session for three last hours. I could not have been more pleased with Rods' work and the professionalism of Sacred Tattoo. read more

My first tatt was 4 years ago in New Jersey, the owner was "honored to pop my cherry" and gave me a good, basic over the shoulder symbol it took me months to decide on. When i realized tatts didn't hurt as much as I imagined, I swore I'd do more. I wanted an artist. Talented. Respectful of their craft, of my skin, of time, of money. I wanted my concept to be understood and designed for my arm with attention to detail. I found ALL of that at Sacred. It's one of those places you probably walk past often, but hardly notice. The interior space is the kinda space you wish you lived in. Lit nice, music, clean, homey, music playing just loud enough, friendly staff who greet you like they invited you over to hang out. No judgement, no scowls, no tatt elitist vibe, no 'tourist go home' New Yorker tude. I wanted to go downstairs and tell people on the street, hey go up there, those guys are cool! LOL Although they are casually cool, they are very strict on their rules, payments, restrictions, policies and paperwork. Even the aftercare kit is handed over before the tatt is done. If you don't know which artist would be perfect for your tattoo, they choose the artist for you. There are face-to-face consults before the work is started, there's discussion, opinions, and information given for free. There's a cool lounge area to look through portfolios, sip water, and think about art. There's a very nice gallery space with innovative art pieces worth looking at. There's also very cool art pieces on the wall throughout the space. What is awesome is that every artist has their own studio space, it's like being inside the head of their creative minds. Not only great for privacy, but great for the clients to see the style and creative influences of the artist. I truly dig this! Andy did my tattoo. Expert in black & grey, took my concept and drew it up most excellently. Besides being talented, he is a friendly, good-hearted, professional dude. Every aspect of his design for me had a reason, of which he explained, and he explained every step of the way, and consistently asked if I was comfortable. Red Bull and water is available and other staff check in on you too, real friendly-like. Everyone who saw my arm is impressed with the shading, the detail, the placement, the design. Cartilage Piercing done by Starr Belew. The process was clear and quick. Starr asked me what I liked to get done and I told her exactly what I wanted. She then led me to a display of jewelry in which I chose which I like and then headed towards another room. She sterilizes everything in front of you and it takes about 5 minutes or so. In the meantime, she has you fill out a short permission form and tells you about how to care for your piercings and whatnot. Once everything is good to go and she knows exactly where you want the piercing, you lay down and she then proceeds to clean the area where you want to get it pierced. The actual piercing took less than a second and it feels literally like a small pinch, you can definitely feel the needle going through your cartilage (and I gotta say, felt pretty cool). The insertion of the jewelry was a bit painful since there was a slight pressure of it going through. But that's it! Starr gave me a small kit of instructions and saline solution to care for the area. She was very thorough and nice about it and I love how clean the place is. When I first walked up, I thought I made a huge mistake. It's a single doorway with one little sign. I almost missed it and it looks super shady. NYC is my favorite city that I have visited so far in my life and I hold it very near and dear to my heart...which is one reason that I decided to get my first tattoo in this city. After scouring through the work of very many tattoo artists, I chose to have Michelle Santana as my tattoo artist, as her style stood out to me and I felt that she was the perfect artist to bring my idea to life. Naomi, her assistant, also deserves a shout out for fitting me into Michelle's schedule during the days I would be in New York with about a 2 weeks notice. The shop is located on Broadway and requires ascending up a straight staircase to the second floor. When I got inside, the interior was warm and welcoming, and just had an overall professional demeanor. After providing my ID and pre-tattoo information, I was offered snacks/drinks prior to my appointment and seated in the waiting room. The vibe in this tattoo parlor worked wonders in calming my nerves, as it felt less intimidating than other ones that I have been to back when I was getting piercings done. Prior to tattooing, Michelle drew out my idea and verified that it matched my vision. Michelle then proceeded to demonstrate that all of the materials being used for my tattoo were brand new. 30-40 minutes later, my tattoo was finished and turned out beautifully and better than I could have ever imagined. The first time I came to Sacred Tattoo was about 2 years ago when I first got my nipple piercings. I had read amazing reviews about Star and wanted her to tell me if my piercings were bad or if I was just freaking out. She was very informative and let me know that they didn't look too bad but that 1 was a bit far apart, I decided to take them out and was told that she will do them for me the proper way if I waited 6 months. I didn't go back until June of this year, Star was on vacation but I was taken care of by her friend who was great. Unfortunately while doing the piercing I moved a bit causing one to be slanted, so I decided to have it redone right then and there as I knew i wouldn't return. The female piercer (sorry I can't think of her name) was great, she was extremely patient and informative as well. I was very happy with both piercings afterwards. For my monthly checkup I was able to meet with Star again and i explained to her my concerns and she put all my worries aside. I'd definitely recommend this place for piercings. She seemed super excited about the idea too which made me feel more at ease. During the consultation we mapped out what I wanted and bounced some ideas back and forth. She told me what would work best with what I wanted to include and where. Very collaborative. It's was about 4 full sessions but the time never dragged. Sheena is so cool, interesting, very nice and made me feel safe. Worked hard and diligently. You pay a $200 deposit when you start the tattoo and that goes towards your final session. I think it's about $200 an hour. Not sure the min. But standard as far as NYC goes and professional. Had to reschedule a session or 2 but gave them enough notice and never a problem. I went to Sacred Tattoo for the first time yesterday and had the best tattoo experience to date.. and I've been getting tattoos for 15 years. Everyone who works there is engaging, kind, and thoughtful of both the clients & artists. The shop is spacious, clean, and I especially appreciated the non-specific Muzak. They did such a beautiful job of making clients be as comfortable as possible and it was just wonderful. Being a hippy chick, I sometimes don't fit into the stereotypical tattoo shop so it was refreshing to feel welcomed and respected. The best part besides kind employees, a clean inclusive comfortable space, and non-specific Muzak? The motherfucking SNACKS. Homeboy rolled in with cheese & meat & those yummy little tri-colored Italian cookies WHICH he delivered to me while being tattooed. Like, my goodness, can I move into the rafters? The whole process was a pleasure, from booking a consultation to meeting with the artist, to actually getting the tattoo done. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. My schedule is all over the place so it was hard for me to pin point an exact date, but they were able to work around my schedule no problem. I was recommended the artist Roberto Castillo to do my piece. He is very calm, soft spoken, and has great energy. I knew we were on the same page right away, and I could tell he was very into the piece I wanted. He even offered some of his own creative spins to put into it, so I feel like it was a great collaboration between us. Roberto was very accommodating to my schedule and was able to see me within 2 weeks of our consultation. The actual tattoo session lasted around 4 hours with some breaks in between. I am absolutely thrilled with the result. It is even more beautiful than I had pictured, and I can't wait to work with Roberto again. - Negative star - They did me wrong and stoled my $200 deposit! I started my sleeve work with them. I've called in the past with well enough time for them and my artist to fit someone else in when I needed to reschedule because of work or family issues. After coming to agreement over the phone to sit down with my artist to schedule a full Saturday session then misled, they claim I never called and therefore pulled my deposit because I exceeded my 90 days, but never gave me a courtesy call. I spoke to 2 different shop managers and my artist and got 3 different stories. Not happy with them at all. They stoled my $200 deposit. read more

I got my entire back tattooed by Lalo Yunda at Sacred Tattoo in NYC. From the nape of my neck to my butt, my whole entire back. I am currently 26 and I have wanted this tattoo since I was 15 years old. I have been looking for the best of the best through Manhattan and the surrounding Burroughs and everywhere near me to try to find the right artist, and I never had enough money. But then the stars aligned and I found Lalo, who is... amazing. I went in with all these ideas about what I wanted it to be, and he explained to me how things change when its on skin and how my ideas where good for a painting, but I'm not paper and he suggested other solutions. A GOOD artist will do this rather then give you a shit tattoo. He told me why he was making the adjustments he was making and came up with a design entirely of his own making from what I told him I wanted. I let him have a lot of freedom with the color and it looks so beautiful... I routinely destroy perfectly good shirts just to show off my back. Any time my back is showing, people come up to me and ask me who did my back tattoo, or tell me that it is the most beautiful tattoo work they have ever seen. I carry a stack of Lalo's card's around with me and hand them out, and whenever my tattoo is exposed, those cards are burning down. Not to mention the standards at Sacred. They have Brian Decker working there and his apprentice/student (I'm not sure) Star Belew, and Brian is famous for his piercing and scarification skills. He does incredible work, and I get all of my piercings and other body mods that are not tattoos from Brian Decker. Every artist in that shop is top notch. The staff is friendly and courteous and makes you feel welcome, as opposed to other tattoo shops that can be elitist or snotty and make you feel unwelcome. I refer every friend to Sacred. Anyone who wants anything done I take there. They are extremely clean. They have the autoclave regularly inspected, everyone is constantly changing gloves between steps to avoid cross contamination, an important step I didn't see happening in a lot of other shops I've been too, and they where very honest with me. When they could have sold me on a product I didn't need that they sold at the shop they said that I didn't need it and to save my money. They are always very friendly and the most talented and professional people that I know. I plan to go back to Sacred for all my body mods in the future, and to Lalo Yunda for all my tattoos in the future, and I am planning to have a lot of them. Their incredibly portfolios speak for themselves. And if all that wasn't enough, the shop itself is beautiful. It houses a sizeable art gallery where they hold regular showings and have charity donations occasionally, and always have beautiful art hanging in that room. There is a large plasma screen TV, they have beverages, and soft cushy couches and on the table the portfolios of all the artists, which are each breath taking and impressive. They have people who have a variety of skills and styles they specialize in, gore, asian tattoos, realistic, portraits, etc, and people who can do everything. Everyone I have met there has been very friendly and sociable. I never felt unwelcome or uninvited at Sacred. They are simply the best tattoo artists and the best shop that I know of period, and I know of a lot of shops. :) They are fantastic. I took a train in 2 hours each way, just to see Lalo for a few hours to work on my back piece, and I would gladly do it again if I had to travel that much. They are worth it and more.
