My old vet spent 3 minutes with us and never touched my dog. Just tried to upsell me on unnecessary treatments. Dr. Kavanaugh is old school. Been doing this for years and is the owner of the practice and the building. A no nonsense, kind and competent proprietor of an independent small practice. He spent a long time with my dog, did the necessary physical exam and made a conservative recommendation. He's an honest and trustworthy guy and is now the vet for my dog and cat. read more

WOW! This place gets either a 1 or a 5 rating... so I'll give them a 2 just to be different... and more generous than I should. Moved into Tustin a couple years ago and selected Saddleback recently for their close convenience. Certainly a busy place which I saw a a good sign. Even when you call, 75% of the time you're put on hold, sometime indefinitely. Initial observation was this place is rather dirty, in need of some deferred maintenance and a good cleaning crew. Up front staff are nice, especially the gal sitting in the middle toward the right (don't remember her name but she has a good memory.and goes out of her way to greet you and ask how your pet is doing). They are prompt at moving you into a room but we've sat, at tines, up to an hour for the vet. Our pet is approaching end-of-life issues with arthritis and heart murmurs, pacing and panting, hyperventilating, and keeping us up at night. We just want her to be comfortable. I've been through the lives of 5 dogs and am familiar with the process and drugs/interventions that have worked. The vet said she needed blood work including liver testing before prescribing. I said, "Testing? Hell this dog may be dead by the time we get the results!" I just want all of us to be comfortable. Called Saddleback last Wednesday asking for a call back from Dr S. Called again on Friday asking for a call from any vet, no response. Resorted to returning to our previous vet Wednesday and endure the longer drive and traffic. Dr S finally returned my call on Wednesday after my old vet called Saddleback to retrieve my pets recent records and X-rays. Dr. S was initially nice and professional but tended to go rather condescending and annoyed with our concerns. I guess you can act that way when you're so busy. I saw Dr. Kavanagh. A thyroid panel was requested by Dr. Kavanagh to rule out some of my pets health concerns. I was told later by Dr. Kavanagh that there was no thyroid problem at all, nothing to worry about, that the lab results came out fine! When I had to take my pet to the ER, two different times, two separate emergency doctors at two separate facilities asked me what kind of thyroid panel is this?! It's absolutely incomplete and unhelpful. I found out that In fact, my pet DID have hyperthyroidism with enlarged nodules! This should have been recognized and caught in the physical and visual exam with Dr. Kavanagh originally. In addition to hyerthyroidism, my pet was also diagnosed with lymphoma! Talk about misdiagnosis and neglect. I would never recommend Saddleback Animal Hospital to anyone. read more

The doctors and staff are caring and attentive. There is never a wait time and they always have your pet's chart ready.

Our experience with this place has been nothing less than unpleasant. We changed vets because we moved to this area. We have an older dog who was previously diagnosed (from our old vet) with some heart issues and arthritis. She has been on heart medication for a bit and on some allergy meds. We had all previous medical records sent to Saddleback. This being said, we were recently told here, that she does not have arthritis and her X-ray (they said they needed) showed her to be in perfect health. We did not see the X-ray, but our dog visibly shows signs of arthritis swelling in her hips. We were told to give her gabepentin. This has not helped her at all. In the past couple months her general overall health has tanked. She stopped wanting to go on walks, paces all night and recently started to struggle breathing at night, basically hyperventilating. We felt she was on her last leg. We wanted her to be as comfortable as possible. And thought we needed to go back for some end of life assistance to keep her comfortable. This would be our 3rd attempt to get to the bottom of what to do. We were told there was nothing but to watch her. We could however run yet another blood panel (which was recently done) and also do an ultrasound. As our poor dog continues to suffer, we again try contacting the vet. We asked if the vet could call us back last Thursday. They did not call us. We called again on Monday and Tuesday, no call back. At this point, we took our dog back to our old vet today. She DOES have ARTHRITIS and a HEART issue. We had them contact Saddleback for our dogs X-rays and records. Low and behold right after this the Dr from Saddleback finally calls us this afternoon. She says "Im calling you back." After almost a week!? Give me a break. Our response was "WE HAVE HANDLED IT". I am disgusted with this doctors approach to our dog and our situation. The place is beyond filthy. It is always chaotic and we have been left to sit with our dog for long periods of time. Last visit we were there an hour and a half, just to be told there was nothing wrong. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone or anyones animal. They clearly do not know what they are doing. Our poor dog was suffering. It is apparent that this is only about the money and testing at this place. Not the wellbeing of your pet. I would never refer anyone to take their pet to Dr. Striegler. EVER. I didn't even want to rate this with a 1 star. It deserves a minus. read more

Front Staff - courteous, non condescending, pleasantly surprised by that. Wait - Can't say it was terrific. Dr. K was cordial enough first time around during an initial checkup and vetalog injection for allergies (he did not give enough the first time and I had to return a few days later). I've tried everything during his 14 years of life: apoquel, raw food, cytopointe, cbd, yeast control, expensive allergy testing, allergy shots, special shampoos...apart from a reiki healing, I've done it and have the receipts - You get the jist here. The only thing that works when nothing else does is a damn Vetlog injection (which helps his hips too since he can sometimes barely walk). My bad-ass dog has survived very, aggressive mouth cancer, removing a quarter of his jaw and we nursed him back to health. I had to make a switch from that vet at Costa Mesa Animal Hospital only due to proximity. I went to Saddleback because I had just switched to a pet savings plan and they offer a discount on services which was totally radical since I canceled his now-very-expensive insurance. So it had been approximately a few months and the dreaded itch had reared its ugly head and out came the cone of shame. I called because I was going out of town and wanted to make sure to get him back in for another injection before we left. The staff put me on hold and returned to say that Dr K. wanted to talk to me and he'd call me back. Initial thought? Oh, ok cool! Maybe there was a new option for him that he had briefly mentioned last time? How nice of him to take the time to have a chat or relay a concern. I awaited the call.....6 hours later. Nothing. Closed. Called second time next morning. Staff ensures me he'll call me back. At this point I'm just waiting to hear why he might want to chat. No messages relayed but he'll call ya back. Hours later - nothing. I call again and am quickly transferred to...Gilbert. Oh Gilbert. You were the cherry on top of my day. This is where the metaphoric sh*t hits the fan. This guy has no place in customer service unless it is at a local DMV office, while trying to win a "who can piss off your customer for no reason" contest. He came off rude, accusational (wait, why??) and honestly just confused the crap out of me. Gilbert mentioned that he didn't want to give my dog the injection and why (which I understood their concern) but I just can't even describe the manner in which the information was disseminated. I'm all fine for a vets opinion on doing what (they feel) is best for my dog. I just think they went about it all the wrong way. I thought he wanted to have a chat about another option, not make me wait two days and than sick Gilbert on me to get me off his back after he was the one who said he wanted to call me. When I asked to just speak to Dr K. instead because I felt this was handled pretty sh*tty, he informed me he would add me back to the "queue" with no estimated time of a return phone call and that he's sure Dr would LOVE to hear all about how I feel (insert male condescending voice here). Dr. K did in fact finally "return" my call 3.5 hours later that he initially asked to have with me. The tone was immediately apathetic, there was lots of mention of his very busy schedule, being down a vet, and that he had Gilbert talk to me while he was in surgery as like some sort of back-handed compliment to both he and I. He was not understanding the point I was trying to make. He promptly said he'd email me my records and good luck. I've had a good amount of experience with vets and animals with the family I grew up in. Never have I seen an office manager treat someone with such disrespect for no reason and then the vet really just not give a crap about it. North Tustin animal hospital has some great vets, an office manager who truly cares about customers input and experience but unfortunately they had some communication issues with their front staff and I'm all for less stress these days. Costa Mesa animal hospital is really the only vet I've experienced that is able to handle a high amount of clientele, while providing easy appointments (I'm talking same-day), knowledgeable vets, relatively low wait time, and pretty darn good cost efficiency when compared to other offices and hospitals. Dr Paladin at CMAH saved my pups life and has given him two extra years so far. Unfortunately this company, mainly Gilbert (read his previous review mentions on Yelp) and Dr K's disinterest in feedback is a reminder to me why I keep making the commute back to them. Too bad the 55 freeway just sucks. read more

I have had such a wonderful experience here at Saddleback. I have been taking my two cane corso males here for a year, and I am super happy with the customer service, facility, and medicine practiced here. I can usually book appointments relatively quickly (within a week or two), the staff is also great about calling back and communication. The people working the front desk have been so friendly and accommodating, and will let me pay for my sessions from our room if needed. Dr. Clark has been amazing with helping figure out what our pets need, and clearly explaining the process with us. She has great patient care. One thing I am super impressed by is her honesty and transparency. I brought our dogs in for a teeth cleaning after not having one since the year before, and it is a pretty expensive procedure, especially for very large dogs. I get a call from Dr. Clark an hour or two after dropping them off telling us that they have no plaque, and could hold off for at least another year. I was super happy not only for our pocketbooks, but just knowing that she isn't a Dr. who will give our dogs unnecessary treatment. My name is Mirela. On March 29, 24 my beautiful German Shepherd, Vinny couldn't move suddenly. I called around to see where can we take him and being Good Friday everyone was booked no matter how much I begged vets to see him the day off. But not this place. Saddleback understood the urgency and took us in, although we were new to them. Our poor Vinny had to be euthanized due to spine problems, kidney failure and mass in his abdomen. My husband, my son and I were dying. our 12 year old companion and baby had to part away from us. This place was so empathetic, kind and professional, that I have no words to describe. I am in tears just by writing this review. They made the whole process very private and compassionate. Since my last review on Saddleback , I have found another vet that gave some relief to my dog and did an aspiration on my dogs cancerous tumor. The tumor has reduced in size and my dog seems to be doing better. I think that Dr Kavanagh is not qualified to diagnose and treat certain conditions for canines. This hospital also overcharges for office visits, medications and diagnostics much less has terrible customer service and very rude vet technicians. Go elsewhere for reasonable charges and better treatment of your furry family member. read more

The veterinarians and vet techs are extremely attentive and provide excellent care for my cat. They are sensitive to each pet's needs. The clinic has separate entrances for dogs and cats, which is great for my cat who is afraid of dogs. They accept many insurance plans and discount policies. My fur baby was in a lot of pain and had a swollen neck. I had an appointment for 3:40 p.m. on a Friday. They are practicing social distancing, which means wearing a mask and making a phone call when you arrive. The techs come out to the car and get your info. Then they take your fur baby into the office to get checked. Dr. Kavanagh then came out and gave recommendations for my fur baby. She had a pinched nerve in her neck so she got some meds for that as well as allergy pills since she overly licks her paws. The staff is very friendly and I felt confident in them taking care of my fur baby. This place doesn't up-charge or diagnose for more $$. I've also had family members bring in our Cane Corso's & they are able to handle him, very well. He had some type of skin condition and it's cleared up. I have been raised with animals growing up and recently got my first puppy as an adult human from a rescue agency. I found Saddleback through my insurance company and am glad I did. I over worry and for that, I am grateful I can just email them my questions and they can get back to me when they have time (and it is almost always with in 48 hours). I know they screen the question because when my Daisy had a parvo scare and I emailed them prior to them opening, I got a response in less than two hours. Daisy ended up being fine, and she doesn't mind going to the vet (though she hates going back to the place we got her for her shots that was part of her purchase agreement). She just got Spayed through the rescue agency as the cost was covered via the adoption but now that she is on the way to recovery, I have been, once again, sending over worried emails to Saddleback to make sure my Daisy is indeed recovering. Daisy's doctor is Dr. Kavanagh and he is very friendly and Daisy likes him. I feel comfortable, knowing that Daisy is in good hands when she needs it. If you are looking for a vet, Saddleback is who I suggest as they are clear professionals and not just a place trying to make a buck. read more

This animal hospital lied to us and we spent $130 more than we were told we would. Upon discharging my dog, the cashier told me that she would not take my insurance even though I tried to give it to her. She said that I was to take the animal hospital receipt to my insurance and they would reimburse me (which I thought was odd and questioned her). I left and when I spoke to my insurance, they told me that's not the case so I called back this hospital and when I tried to explain to the office manager, Gilbert, what happened, he was the most disrespectful person I've ever spoken with from a hospital or any customer service place. He told me his staff "wouldn't tell me that" which doesn't make sense. I tried to give my insurance card during my visit and they didn't take it. They are liars. Several reviews mention how awful he is too, so I'm surprised he still hasn't been fired. Terrible business, I hope no one has to ever deal with this hospital. Dr. Clark saved my beloved dog's life today. I took my dog in to Saddleback this morning for a pre-scheduled follow-up visit, but by coincidence, my dog was also acting ill this morning. It turns out that my dog was in anaphylactic shock due to an extreme allergic reaction to something unknown. Dr. Clark and the whole Saddleback team dropped everything immediately to save my dog.
