This store keeps getting worse and worse. It's the closest grocery store to my house but I usually only end up here as a last resort because.... a) what happened to all the carts?? b) many products that I buy regularly are not in stock OR the expiration dates have passed. c) Produce is NOT fresh and fruit flys everywhere. d) Today I tried to get a package of fresh tortelini and it was spoiled. e) People bring dogs into the store and no one says anything - isn't that illegal? f) I don' t feel safe in the parking lot when it's dark. I end up driving to Brentwood where the Safeways seem to be cleaner, better selection of produce, products fully stocked (not expired), and THEY HAVE CARTS. Two weeks ago I happened to be in Concord and stopped at the Safeway there. It was immaculate - Disneyland compared to the Safeway on Deer Valley! How is it that some Safeways within a couple miles of each other have such different quality? Why do I have to drive 20 minutes out of my way to go to Safeway when there is one 5 minutes from my house. Super frustrating. read more

I was there earlier today and stood at the deli trying to get a pound of roast beef. I stood there for way too long as employees were around. One lady made eye contact to be and said rudely. " someone will be with you in a minute I dont work her ".I continued to wait and as I did a employee appearded standing behind me ..I ask her if there was anyone here..she responded RUDELY. I have not shopped at this store for a long time because I was tired of dealing with rude people (customers and cashiers) and stepping over homeless people when I arrived early in the morning. I am happy to say that I am glad to see that Safeway has made it feel safe again. It is really sad that it had to resort to gates and security people and closed off sections but something had to be done. I am glad that Safeway did this. My experience was fantastic. I came in with my walker and requested a cart. Instead she brought me a cart I could drive and showed me how to use it. Since I am 92 years old, I was a little nervous. She then sent a young man to go with me to put my needs into the cart. I never had to get out of the seat as he was so very helpful. Actually, half way through another young man came to replace him. Both of them very very helpful. I will never forget this experience. Then they drove my groceries home. I lived across a very busy street and I met them at my door. Thank you again. Betty read more

I'm done with Safeway. Last time I reviewed it was because it looked like Safeway gave all their left over onions with fruit flies to the Safeway on Deervalley Rd. I literally just bought fresh Strawberries and fresh Raspberries at the Safeway on Balfour Rd on Monday, two days ago. I had to throw out all but a handful of raspberries yesterday after 1 day because they were moldy and furry. Today I saw my strawberries and they are rotting and moldy !!! There inly 2 days old !!! What a rip off. People tell me to take them back but I don't want to put them in my car, fruit flies. Guess I'll have to try Raileys or Luckys. read more

I ordered a cake online for my daughter's graduation party and was given a confirmation number and told I could pick it up on Saturday at 10am. The party started at 2pm. When we attired to pick up cake they said they didn't do online orders and there was no cake. I showed them my confirmation number and they said they're was nothing they could do. I called and spoke to store manager whom said they did take online orders and put me on hold while he walked back to bakery. He then got back on line and told me that he was just informed by bakery manager that they no longer take online orders and that she had sent out a cancelation email. I checked my email and yes there was a cancelation email but it was sent at 10pm Friday night. How was I supposed to be able to find somewhere open to make me another cake by the following morning. So I had a party of around 80 people with no cake. Completely unacceptable. The assistant manager doesn't even know what's going on in his store. There shouldn't be an option to place an online order if they don't honor them and the bakery should not only have canceled much sooner but have called me as well to let me know, not the night before the party but as soon as order was placed. Very unprofessional. I would never have expected this type of behavior from a store like Safeway. I will NEVER be a patron at this location again. read more

Called Safeway this morning to place an order of 5 sandwiches. Instead of causing a long line I decided to call it in. I was placed on hold for awhile. Finally someone picked up. I then ask if I can place an order of sandwiches and she said "oh I'm sorry no one picked up in the deli department let me go ahead and transfer the call." She then transferred me to the meat department. I got transferred again. Finally someone from the deli department picked up and said they can't take orders over the phone. The first person who picked up the phone should have told me they don't take orders over the phone. I find this type of customer service annoying. read more

Typical Safeway. One thing different about this one is that they have a sushi and asian food section (in addition to the their deli sandwiches). Their chow mein is good but I would stay away from the other stuff. Sushi are made fresh daily and kept in a display case. It's not bad but don't expect it to be cheap. Typically will cost about $10.00 for a small tray which is comparable to restaurant pricing. Their sandwiches, I'm not a big fan of; but their fried chicken and chicken strips are not bad and good value. Their groceries are okay and produce are fresh although not as cheap as FoodMaxx. Shelves are stocked full and arranged logically. One thing I hate is their lack of cashiers. Expect to spend 15+ minutes waiting to pay for your purchases on a Friday afternoon as the times I went, there were only three cashiers plus one cashier managing the self checkout section. read more

As a former 10 year employee of Safeway I'd have to say this place is horrible. Safeway has always been known for its customer service, which sets them apart from other grocery stores. The employees here are unpleasant, and act as if they'd rather not be there. I don't know what happened to the training (maybe because Albertsons bought them out) and things have changed. Will definitely not be coming back. *edit* Nobody has time to call your director or reach out. It's unbelievable that you guys do not audit your stores. Are the reviews not enough? I am really angry at Safeway right now. They have placed a number of products in a special area behind gaurds. These products include beauty supplies, soaps, medicines, and alcohol. These idiots wouldn't allow me to leave their special area without paying first for a few bathroom items. They didn't TRUST ME to carry LISTERINE, TOOTHPASTE AND Q-TIPS around the store while shopping! AFTER 30 YEARS of shopping at Safeway, now they treat me like a thief. The place was clean and tidy, despite being super busy and quite obviously short staffed in the cashier department. The Chinese food bar though-- wonderful food and they make sure they fill that container to the brim! However, four stars this time. The bar had a lot of empty spots so the choice for the food was limited to what they had out instead of the full array of options. Also, some of the organization is just whack. You'd think the sodas would be on the aisle with the juices, water, etc. But no. They are in pyramid style stacks at the side and back of the store.... and not even at the end where the other beverages are?! And trying to wait in line, especially to self check out, is chaos. There's no actual space to wait where you aren't blocking someone from trying to move through the aisles of the store. With social distancing being even more important than ever-- thhhhat's a big'un. Feels like small complaints all things considered. But still one I felt worth mentioning since it really disrupts the whole shopping experience to have to figure out where the heck something is while not being trampled over! read more

Ok so I usually like this Safeway but some of the staff at the deli have seemed unhappy & it's probably from being understaffed. Unfortunately this morning (Wednesday 06/15/22) I received a stale bread role for my sandwich. Please Safeway get it together! I do not recommend ordering your cakes from this location. I placed an order for 2 full size cakes and they were did completely wrong! Not to mention all cake sizes have went up approximately an entire $20. I was only refunded for one of my cakes which was $85. The writing was horrible! The cake was nothing I asked for. No one in the bakery cared for my concern. And I never spoke to an a manger. I can't speak for anything but the sandwich bar this morning. I came in for a breakfast burrito and it must have been the perfect time because there was no line. I wish I would have taken the woman's name down who helped me. She was amazing. Great service and my burrito is super yummy, and packed full of onion just the way I like. I used to work at a baGel place when I was young. And I always made people's food the way I would make my own food. I cared, which means I didn't just toss your food together. Have you ever ordered a sandwich or burrito and all the meat was on one side and you have to redo your own sandwich? This was not the case today. My food was perfect. read more

I'm going to be very cautious buying organic from Safeway from now on. I usually go to Trader Joe's for organic fruits, but lately I found that Safeway had a pretty good selection. The last time I bought avocados here they were great! I went in yesterday 8/7/2014 and I saw that their organic avocados were a bit skimpy. I squeezed a few of them & they were SQUISHY!!! Totally rotten!!! But I found 2 that felt pretty firm. So cool, I probably scored the last 2 good ones... WRONG!!! I got them home & sliced them open and this is what I got... Never thought I'd experience racism at this Safeway I've been going here for years but soon as they separate the alcohol sale thing have been weird. So I'm waiting to be rung up for about 10 mins with two Items. The lady in the front of me they rung her stuff up didn't ask for her ID as soon as I get to the front the security ask everyone behind me If they would like to go to the other the Registers with their alcohol since they didn't have too much in their cart. I'm like wow why didn't you ask me he just walks away and the girl asked for my ID I'm like you to ask the lady in front of me. I've never been to a grocery store where there are NO check stands open, only self checkout. All the self checkout stands were being used and everyone needed assistance. The store employee who was manning the self checkout lanes was checking out someone because you can't purchase alcohol at the self checkout stands, and we're all waiting for assistance. I literally waited nearly 15 minutes because there was only one person available assisting everybody who is checking out. Self check out should be a convenience, not mandatory. Safeway Bakery Dept. I have been ordering this exact same cake from this store since 2007. Originally ordered cake on 12/30 and requested pick up for new year's eve 12/31 at 1 pm. Looked at my receipt on Saturday 12/30 because the receipt said pick up was sat 31. I knew that I expected to pick it up on Sunday 12/31 not sat 12/30. I called Safeway bakery on sat 12/30 to inquire about the typo on the receipt. The associate informed me that the cake was there but I could pick it up on 12/31. I said I expected a fresh cake not a day old cake so she told me she would have them bake a new cake for pick up on the correct day (new year's eve 12/31 Sunday). I arrived on Sunday 12/31 at 1 pm and was told that the cake was not ready. They had to put the decorations on it. Upon examining the cake, I noticed that the black flake border had faded causing what looked like bird droppings or burns. The cake looked old. I was told that because the icing was whip cream it causes the black flakes to fade but I was NEVER told this when I originally placed the order. The manger began to tell her team out loud where customers could hear that if any customer orders black flakes on whip cream icing they must tell them that they will fade. Smh. Then I came home to cut the cake only to find that they did not even add strawberries inside only bananas. This was for my sisters 50th Birthday. They ruined her special memory. read more

I would like to alert your management team to racial bias displayed by one of your employees, Jorge Galmadez, who works in your Antioch CA store. I have been a customer of Safeway Stores for over 25 years. I have been a regular customer of your Antioch location several times a week for the past 4-years. ( Please feel free to verify this using my name/club card.) Tonight at approximately 8:45pm. I paid for approximately 5 items totaling about 27-dollars using your self-check out. After completing my purchase, my 13-year old daughter and I were approached by Jorge Galmadez who stated," Open your bag, several people saw you put something in your bag, even the security saw you put something in your bag". I replied," WHAT? ARE YOU SERIOUS? OKAY. I proceeded to open my bag as wide as I could. When Jorge couldn't find anything he then stated," You must have put it back." All the while my 13-year old was horrified and we were both humiliated in front of numerous customers and staff. This incident was clearly racial profiling at its worst. Not only do I resent my interaction with Jorge, I am seriously contemplating legal action for the suffering inflicted upon my daughter. This incident has turned what should have been a special night for us into a complete nightmare for my entire family. read more

DO NOT USE THEIR CURBSIDE PICK-UP. I just had the worse experience of my life. I placed my order and about one third of my order was out of stock which would have reduced my total bill by about $50. I went to pick up the order and tried calling but no one answered. I tried for 20 minutes before I finally went into the store to get my order myself. When I placed the order in my basket, I pointed out that they had charged me for 6 bags but my order only required 4, they offered to give me two empty bags. I insisted on the credit to my card. I get home and find out that they charged me for all of the items that were out of stock. It took me an hour to finally get through to someone on the phone only to be informed there was nothing they can do because only one particular manager can access the records and they suggested I come in the following day when the Manager is in between 5am and noon. When I said I was working, they suggested I come in another day next week. From the tone of the person I spoke with I don't believe they intend on returning my money. So the convenience of curbside pick up has ended up resulting in my being cheated out of hard earned dollars, hours in time, and now having to take time off of work to go to this store to try to get this resolved. Did what Dawn suggested below. Another GREAT waste of time. I just spent the last 20 minutes on-line at www.safeway.com and just kept getting this same message over my wait-"Sorry to keep you waiting. We're working hard to get to you. What is going on at this store? Management must be dumb or only there once a month, probably both. Lines always crazy, this morning less than half of the self checkout machines are working, I ALWAYS have to search the entire store for a basket since they're never at the door like they should be.
