I shop here all the time, however I've not been thrilled with them lately. Charging for plastic bags when I bring my own bags in. They are charging $.10 here and there and it adds up. It is annoying because no one wants to complain about $.10 or $.30 on the bill . Safeway charged $.30 yesterday for bags I did not receive , because I brought my own in. Stop doing that Safeway! Please check your receipts ...am I the only one this is happening to? probably not. grrr. Also, I never donate when they ask, because they get to write it off on their taxes! I'll donate myself and write it off on MY taxes, thank you. And how many times have I checked out and seen the full price for a sale item. This is getting too much. read more

I would rate safeway 0 stars given the chance but on yelp you are required to give at least one pity star. I went to the deli with my wife to get a BLT and from the moment i saw the deli, i knew i was f'ed. Immediately i saw at least 5 different health code violations. I was served bread from an uncovered basket of dusty nonsense! Then i noticed the friggin onion mixed in with the cold, uncovered bacon! Then when this fool gets the avocado i asked for, it was brown. Sickening. I also saw the sandwich sinner use the same spoon he used to scoop the avocado for spreading chipotle sauce. Honestly, once I received my sandwich and walked away, I was too afraid to eat the food that i hid my sandwich in the cat litter isle. DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NEEDED read more

Some old fat cashier with a BMI of 30 wouldn't shutup about how the red bull i was in line to buy was horrible for me becuase she watched a video about what they put in it. I want to preface that the employee that took my order seemed nice and was likely new. However the store needs to better train their workers especially when it comes to breakfast. I seemed to understand how breakfast worked better than the worker did, just from looking at the menu screen. First she tried to charge me extra for adding ham, because in her mind egg didn't come on the sandwich already? After that she apologized, gave me a new sticker, I then walked over to self checkout, and the price was then a dollar more than it was before. I had an appointment I had to get to with a client so the fact this was taking so long was stressful. In the end I paid the correct price for the sandwich thanks to another helpful employee correcting her and giving me the right label. I will say the employee had a bit of an attitude when I came back to get the correct price. I think the staff needs a serious training on breakfast sandwiches & burritos. It tasted good though, glad I asked for egg or I wouldnt have gotten any lol! read more

The store is clean and well lighted. The bakery has a wide variety of delicious single servings of pies, cakes, cheesecakes, etc. I appreciate that they offer single bagels in a variety of flavors, more so than some other grocery stores. The butcher area is huge and offers a number of different cuts of meat, albeit at a $$$ cost. The produce area is open and airy. I like the fact that bags are plentiful, particularly built into the large bins in the middle of the space. Using points for discounts on Safeway's already less expensive gas is awesome. I do have one area of concern about the bagging employees. I have a very large insulated bag that contains other smaller cloth bags. Today the bagger took all the small bags out and packed almost all my groceries in the large bag, including 2 half gallons of milk. Then there were two bags that were so lightly filled they might have flown away in a brisk wind. The rest of my bags were dropped hodgepodge in the basket. I weighed that large bag when I got home and it weighed exactly 22 lbs! My white hair identifies me as a senior, although I am quite fit for my age. But the bagger didn't know that. I think 22 lbs is WAY too heavy for any customer, but particularly for seniors. Personally, while I know it's convenient, I think half gallons of milk should be in separate bags to even out the weight. I don't see baggers doing that anywhere, not just at Safeway. I would have given the store 5 stars, but the overweight bag caused me to deduct a star. I hope management sees this and uses it in staff education. read more

I experienced mean and aggressive customer service at this Chico on Mangrove location. No one should have to be treated like garbage when they purchase from a store like Safeway. The posted member prices save over 30% off daily priced groceries.the store is so clean and there is a wonderful young woman working the register that should train others just how to be great at serving customers. She has the best and most mature annoncement voice to tell me I have 5 minutes left before the store closes. It's so nice that the management puts up with a high maintenance shopper like me. I have never dealt with more problems with their grocery delivery in my life. Every third time it seems that there is an issue and my groceries never arrive. I've been waiting for 10 days for my refund because they told me to place a second order once my first order didn't arrive. This has been an ordeal I've been calling and following up on for days now at least five different times and still don't have my money back. I know $100 isnt a lot to a lot of people. But this has put me in financial hardship for my budget making me place a second order when the first order went rogue with the delivery person. They should've replaced my groceries from the first order like they usually do because the Uber and DoorDash drivers are unreliable at best. this has been the most inconvenient service ever and no one at the store is get my money back. I have been offered no compensation for all of this trouble. I've called and called and dealt with their online team and local store and no one can get me my hundred dollars back in a timely manner. I'm going into another weekend and still don't have answers. Obviously nobody gives a crap about their customers at this company. I've been more than patient and I'm at my wits end. read more

First and foremost, I've taken a new approach to yelp. And for every bad review, I'm going to be writing two good ones. Because that's just the right thing to do plus it gives perspective to the negatives. That being said, I will be writing two nice reviews at the conclusion of this one. I am a pretty consistent, Safeway shopper, and I have never had a problem. I shop there enough that I take advantage of their discounts and coupons with every trip. I even do my ibotta shopping there for for cash back and since all of my fruits, veggies, meat, and household chemicals come from there, it adds up. I'm comfortable staying in the last year alone, I've spent 6-8 thousand dollars there between myself, my girlfriend, and my aging uncle who I shop for. That brings me to the other day, I bought a couple hundred dollars of household cleaners that were eligible for cash back and so I stocked up. When I went to enter them into the app, it turned out that I had a mistake and they were ineligible. No big deal, I would just return them since it was from that day and they were unopened, nay, untouched from when I'd left the store mere hours before. It's not that I am desperate for discounts. But i figure.... Why not? By shopping this way I am able to get several thousand dollars a year in cash back from items I would have purchased anyway at the same price. I cash it out all at once and it's an annual vacation bonus for my gf and I. So again. Why not? Surely I would have no issues returning these things at a store I support in such a way. After all. I'm a very loyal customer. Imagine my surprise when I went to customer service and was greeted by what must have been a new employee (I'm getting the name to add in here later) who started the return; implied my gf and I were somehow breaking rules and went to get a manager to deal with us apparent rule breakers and scallywags while making some snarky sounds. (This part previously said some thing I'm not proud of so I'm removing it) Eff that. I'm a business owner. I'm not some kind of cretin. ahem. You know what? I'll stop there. But after I find the name I hope Safeway addresses this behavior. Because I've spent more in 30 years of shopping at Safeway then I would feel comfortable admitting to but I will not be going back as long as he works there mismanaged. The manager by the way. Jacob. Did a good Job except for buying into the bs. Byyyyeeee Okay so here I am less than 12 hours later and have already been contacted by management from this store. No offer was made to bribe me. No threats were made. They wanted to hear more from this situation. I'm not taking down review this second and my only issue has ever been that one interaction. Safeway provides me with the best grocery shopper's experience hands down...they even bag my groceries. A few times the Safeway clerks have issued me discounts on certain grocery items that I wasn't even aware of...I do enjoy saving money! Furthermore, Safeway always have special promotional deals in every aisle. My shopping list total might be a few bucks higher when compared with my "bag-it-yourself" competitors. They've got the best selection this side of town when it comes to groceries. Also the best prices, which is saying something as Safeway has a reputation for being expensive since Albertson's acquisition of them. Corporations, am I right? Cashiers and customer service are cordial, provided you are cordial. Self-checkout is a plus, and I wish more people would provide it as an option at their establishment. I understand that it may be a security risk, but that is why you exchange some cashiers for some rentacops. Other than that? Probably want to distance yourself from the customers. But isn't that how it generally is with most businesses? Unless it's a pub, you're not going there to mingle. Also I like how this is the second Safeway I've been to where the cashiers and customer service are inclined to give you discounts and free stuff when you happen to be down on your luck. Charity is good and it's these little things that at the very least make me have some semblance of hope for humans as a species. read more

I was at Safeway at around 9:15 a.m. and had a problem with the cost of my deli sandwich going through the self-service register. The manager there at the self-service registers, an older gentleman that I'm sorry I didn't get his name, was very helpful, friendly and corrected the problem right away. He was so nice and helpful that instead of being frustrated and irritated I started my morning in a happy mood. I told him I was going to Yelp him and he didn't know what Yelp was which I thought was funny. So of course I told him all about Yelp and how it was a good thing to check out for just about anything you wanted to purchase or if you wanted to eat somewhere. It makes such a difference when people are nice kind and helpful when you are at a business. I know I don't always get courteous employees when I shop. Give this man a raise! read more

Seems poorly managed. Lines are long, not enough checkstands open, main aisle always crowded. Employees pulling huge pallets of good and stocking shelves in the middle of the day, adding to the congestion. Other employees on a mission to get past customers without making eye contact. read more

Safeway is pretty expensive, the only good part is that you can get gas rewards. It's a bit hard to find some items at time but the workers are more than helpful to finding what you are looking for. read more

I love Chico Safeway on mangrove for the following reasons. I have been going there for 12 years and have gotten to know some of the people. They are all fantastic, my experience is always great especially when I need to purchase wine. The wine area manager Dave is so helpful as I do not drink so when I need something his assistance is always welcome, I see people lined up to get product information from him. Others in that store, a person who I call big Pete, is always cheerful and helpful, the man Rafiki always gives me and others a great feeling just being there, i trust them all and enjoy my shopping. The people in the meat area are also very nice and always helping as I am 72 and sometimes need some help on the lower spaces, the young man Brenden is a very on the ball employee sharp and respectful. In this review I would also say the the management people are all on top of things and are available to talk as I wonder around. Its a great place to shop because of them. My big issue is that the store does not have a ATT cell phone system so when I am there in the middle of Chico, I cannot make and receive calls which is really important. They actually wrote the word "none" on the cake, because we told them we didn't want any writing and the lady literally wrote none on the cake. This was a typical Safeway. It was to see this Safeway in town as I'm very brand new to Chico temporarily for my internship. The store was clean and the workers were nice. I gotta say they were exactly what I expected out of a Safeway. I went in to buy filtered water and a bag of lettuce to make a salad. At least I know where to get groceries next time. read more

Well stocked and clean store. The deli staff are very friendly and efficient. The self-check out folks, though, are brutal. They always stand around looking miserable and are pretty rude, with the exception of the short Asian lady and the older man with the glasses. This store has gone all the way down hill. The employees are so unhappy and this is a direct reflection of the customer experience, and they have told me this when I have asked what is happening at this store (over the past few months when issues have arisen as I've known many by shopping there for almost 15 years now.) Those that are still there are bailing because it's not a good place to work. Beyond the typical post covid supply chains issues this store is just a hot mess and is bad place to shop. Yeah there are some people in need outside lurking around but really not much of that and I've never been approached or bothered . In fact the employees working there are surly and unhappy, they can't keep the shelves stocked, the produce and florals are a hot mess on all fronts, no one is willing or able to help try to navigate the unstacked shelves when looking for something, the meat department is so pitiful the staff doesn't know the product and it is hard to even interact with them with their attitude, the florals keep new tulips on the floor in containers that have no water in them, just to name a few issues noted today. And its almost impossible to communicate up the food chain pardon the pun in the store or via Safeway online to report this. Of course Safeway is Albertsons so maybe that is part of the issue. The local store management for this store in particular either inexperienced or is incompetent and shouldn't be in charge of this or any store. Super market shopping is not always that fun - in this case it's so bad I have to say just go find another store the prices will be similar. To me the mess and lack of customer support or store management interaction are not worth your time. I'm sorry to see this happen to tho store but it has . I am loving Safeway!! Most people may not realize that they can stack Safeway's digital coupons with manufacture coupons to really save a lot of money. By doing this I have saved tons of money and can shop for cheaper here than I can at Walmart, Winco or anywhere else for groceries. And its nice to have someone else pack my groceries and bring them out to the car for me! Such a plus - and cheaper too!! The club card is the way to go!! I in particular like the Safeway on Mangrove, for some reason I seem to find the people working there are a little more friendly, a little nicer, and a little more helpful. Maybe it has to do with a good manager or something, but I go out of my way to hit the one on Mangrove. read more

Love the deli breakfast sandwiches, but not Keskan. My favorite Safeway location in town; helpful, clean, friendly, and usually over the top customer service with one noted exception in the Deli. This guy is always looking for a way out of helping you and consistently creates disaster looking sandwiches. I watched another customer walk away because of this today. I understand it is very busy usually but the customer is standing there saying exactly what goes on the sandwich next. Ive been left One too many times feeling the same way. read more

I am a disabled woman and I am shocked with how I was treated with the utmost disrespect today. My cashier was Pete and he made me have to bag my own product when I am obviously disabled and am unable to do so because of my back condition (I can hardly walk). He saw me and did not attempt to help me although I asked for help. After this experience I was followed out by Safeway security for no apparent reason. When I returned at a later time because I could not believe what had happened I asked for a manager (Gabriel) who just shrugged it off, asked for my caregivers name and cell number (as he did not even acknowledge me) and then told him he would call "us" back. Not only am I invisible as a disabled customer but as a woman as well? I also called back later in the day and he said he was busy and again did not acknowledge my experience, shock or anxiety over the situation. Nor did he ever return the call. My caregiver also doesn't appreciate Safeway holding onto his personal info. Especially when Gabriel did not inform him as to why, when I am the party involved here. I don't know why Safeway still hires misogynists and bigots? I thought times had changed... read more

My family and I have been going to this place ever since it opened its doors for the very first time so many years ago. We go there either together as a group or in shifts. This location is actually 1 of 3 Safeway locations in Chico. As for the other two, one can be found on East Avenue and the other on W Sacramento Avenue. This location is the one I prefer to go to since the one on East Avenue is a little out of my way and the the one on W Sacramento is smaller than I'd like and mainly only for college students, which I still am in a way. Enough of that, let me write my thoughts on the Mangrove location. The store is nice and open, the shelves are nicely stocked and the employees are very humble. I am never afraid to approach them thinking they'll snap at me like some crabby employees I've encountered at other grocery stores. I can easily go in, get everything I need, head over to register and maybe get a coffee at the Starbucks inside before leaving. This is my ideal place for obtaining everything on that grocery list each week. read more

Their bakery is the worst. We keep trying here and then returning terrible items. A few months ago it was soggy muffins and tonight it was a rancid chocolate pudding cake that had coagulated unpleasantly. Dont buy ANYTHING from the bakery! read more

I will NEVER order another cake or cupcakes from here again! This past weekend, we had my daughter & son's birthday party which was Mermaid & Pirate themed. We went ahead & ordered 4 dozen cupcakes. Half of them red & white (pirates) & the other half pink & lime green (mermaids ). I had specifically asked for the frosting to be swirled and not literally half of a side one color & whatnot. What we ended up with was TERRIBLE! I was SO upset! And what's worse, is I live out of town & had my mother pick them up & by that time, I didn't have the time or patience to drive all the way back to argue over cupcakes. But dear lord...they were terrible. The mermaid ones were red & green...& the pirate ones looked like burnt dog crap! Not even kidding. I tried to make them look "better" by placing a pirate coin as a topper... but nothing helped these...What really gets me though is that I was told they were going to look fantastic! If this is your idea of fantastic, I suggest you seek imidiate help! Our parties are literally known for being the best & THIS is what I had to display for the cake table...just awful!
