My go to grocery spot in Wailuku / Kahului. The place has everything you could want in terms of local foods. My favorites are taro leaves, limu / ogo, pohole, poi, papaya, Maui Dried Saimin, pipikaula, poke and local produce. They recently started to carry poi candy - poi, taro chunks that taste like deconstructed kulolo. I also get my luau supplies here - food dishes / boats, etc. they also have a great selection of island snacks. read more

I enjoyed shopping at Island Grocery Depot. The staff are super friendly, engaging, and helpful. One staffer shared a recipe with me about making empanadas using a flour tortilla! I like the exchange of ideas, and found her easy to converse with. The cashier was helpful in signing us up to be a member. The store offers a wide variety of items, not just fresh groceries, frozen items and drinks. They also sell bulk paper products- plates, utensils, cups, bowls etc., and quick ready-made hot food to go. The store has wide aisles, adequate parking, and a good variety of food items. I'm amazed that you don't have to look for a cart as the customers return their carts where they belong. Good alternative to the super stores that sell bulk items; however, you may have to still visit other stores to purchase everyday kitchen ware. I'll definitely be coming back to shop here. read more

An updated review is in order as IGD has become a favorite stop of mine due to their lower prices than Safeway and Foodland when it comes to most grocery items. I've also noticed that their produce is fresher as they're the middle man distributor, not a third party grocer. Since my last review, they've extended their day by an hour, now closing at 7pm on weeknights and 6pm on weekends. Also new is a frequent shopper program via the App Card app. At one point, I received a few bucks off my bill, a free slushy during my birthday month, and a few other small perks here and there. As far as grocery items, they're one of the few places that sell a variety of frozen seafood like calamari, lobster tails, king and snow crab legs, and octopus. I recently entered the arena of boiled peanut-making and they always have raw peanuts on hand for purchase by the pound. If you're into snacks from Wholesale Unlimited of Oahu fame, they carry almost all of their goodies, just labeled under a different name. Their bento selections have expanded but nothing entices me, yet. TIP: Their newest and second location in Lahaina is larger than here but with similar inventory. OVERALL: I'm a bigger fan of IGD nowadays. Great alternative to Costco and chain supermarkets. They'd be busier if they stayed open later and had closer parking. read more

If you don't have a Costco card or just need a small portion of veggies, meats, etc. at a great price, Island Grocery Depot is the place for you. They're in a weird location, in an industrial area, and down the road from the waste water plant. However, don't let that deter you because at IGD you'll find an ample amount of groceries that include fresh meat, dairy, frozen goods (veggies, lasagnas, gyoza, meat, etc.), local produce, canned goods, a big liquor selection, & basically anything and everything you would need to prepare a decent meal. Another great thing that I love about the store is that they stock food service products and equipment that you could use for fund raisers, catering, or your own business needs. They have chaffing dishes, serving trays/platters, tons of food container options, & disposable utensils. The great part is that they are all priced so affordably. I love this store because you can find a lot of things here that aren't available at Costco, like the food service items, Asian ingredients/snacks and certain meats like minced ahi, boxes of chicken drumettes/wings, etc. which I've used for fund raisers in the past. In the old days... It was known as VIP (Valley Isle Produce) Cash n Carry (near Naskas or Kanaha Beach by the airport.) This is the place where MomnPop's or small caterers got #10 cans of cut corn, Tomato Sauce, cases of pork butt, takeout boxes and 50# bags of AP flour before Costco put every small corner grocer out of business. They have competitive prices, local produce, sundries, booze, Whl Sale freezer items and hot food to pick up. Best price of instant yeast, luau leaves, turmeric, shallots, dry beans and limu on island. Wines, ice and liquor are good too. Check out their blocks of shrimp, spinach and, frozen wings. read more

Inside they have frozen groceries on left and fruits and vegetables in the back. Wide selection of Asian food and snacks. This store was formerly known as Cash N Carry and is the retail outlet of VIP Food Service. There are no membership fees, and major credit cards are accepted. (They changed their name because people though5 they were a cash only store.)The warehouse outlet was remodeled and expanded several years ago and is located on the road to Kanaha Beach Park. (The company has a second outlet in Lahaina.) Island Grocery Depot has the largest selection of local and ethnic foods on Maui. The store carries fresh and frozen meat and seafood and carries a nice selection of fruits and vegetables. Prices are generally lower than Safeway and Foodland. It also has an impressive selection of wine and other liquor. I prefer to shop here for most of my food because is fresher and lower priced than most retail food outlets. First of all the name of the store is Island Grocery Depot. I like to come here for certain things. They have great fresh produce. When you walk into the store you will see an assortment of fresh flowers to your right. Proceed to your left where you will find the freezer section with dessert items frozen veggies to frozen lasagna. You will also find fresh meats. They have good pastele sausage and Kim chee sausage too. They also carry things that you may need for parties like paper products which you can buy in bulk. Great selection of liquor and prices are always reasonable. Try the chichiron is so ono. They have hot food items which you can pick up for lunch also but go early before they sell out. Soo, I'm a foodie from Berkeley, CA. So my bar is ridiculously high and I know it. Where we used to live, I was able to frequent virtually ANY ethnic grocery, one of the best independent groceries in the US IMHO (Berkeley Bowl) and enjoyed almost unlimited options for dining in or out. Moving to Kula, while one of the best decisions we've ever made, came with the realization that a lot of things got a bit more complicated. Grocery shopping was one of them..... until I found Island Grocery Depot. Now, while they don't have everything on your list, they DO tick the boxes on cheap produce, awesome ethnic products (including latino foods....yay), good liquor department and wide range of frozen products. My advice is to go there BEFORE you go to either Costco or Whole Foods if you have a shopping list (this goes for locals and tourists alike). I guarantee you'll knock a few things off your list and save some dough in the process. And you may pick up a couple of things you didn't know you needed (like the yummy fruit pies they sell). Lines can form but the checkers are efficient and sweet. Trust me, its worth the extra five minutes drive! read more

This place is great and a fantastic find. The prices are low and the selection of food, produce & alcohol is extensive. It's like going to Cash & Carry back on the mainland. If I lived on Maui, I would probrably shop here once a week. There were actually a lot of items that were the same prices or lower than on the mainland. I'm so glad I finally gave Cash and Carry a shot. After hearing raving reviews from my co-workers, I finally made it in here after work one day. I was really impressed with their low prices on produce, and most things they carry. They have a good selection for making many asian and mexican meals. I am in luck! I have been looking for a cheap spot to stock up my mexican basics. They have tomatoes for cheap, (Maui standards), jalepenos, beans, chips, tortillas, and sauces! It is not as good as the motherland, San Diego, but it is as close as it is going to get for Maui. Give it a shot, and if they carry it, it is probably cheaper. I found a couple key items here the last couple of times I have went in, that were drastically cheaper. Fresh 100% Maui grown coffee for $5!! Even better than Kona coffee, since it supports our local coffee growers. read more

Wonderful employees! They told us of a wonderful place nearby with sea turtles and gorgeous views where we could eat the ice cream we had bought there. Their musubi is made fresh every morning and it is delicious and inexpensive. For people on cruises, they have 1.75L water bottles for 99 cents!! And they have smaller water bottles with sport caps 2 for a dollar. A wonderful selection of goodies you miss on a cruise. I hope to go back next time I'm on the island! read more

Cool grocery store with a barebones interior with a good variety of Asian and American food. They have eminently reasonable prices compared to the Safeway/Foodland. It's also conveniently near Costco, so you can quickly stop in and pick up a couple of things that you weren't able to find at Costco or didn't want to buy a flat of. read more

I love shopping here bc it has things other stores don't. It carries random doo-dad, local salsa, dips, slices, etc at great prices. A large hot Maui Roasters Coffee is $1.25. It is immaculately clean, takes pride in its sanitation and spacious and has lots of parking in lot and on street. Was excited to finally check this place out after hearing good reviews. I gave it two stars because there are definitely some great buys but the whole experience was tarnished for us when the cashier refused to speak to us or answer my polite greeting. Not sure if cashier #0113 at register #002 was just having a bad day or what but the stink eye was completely unnecessary when I was just trying to be polite to her. There's never an acceptable reason to completely ignore a customer who is speaking to you. Not sure what was behind her prejudice but I see no reason to give this place our money again if the cashiers aren't even expected to answer a "hello". read more

HOWEVER, you need winter clothes when you want to spend enough time to shop in there ...so, I limit my shopping at that store. It's just too damn cold! A really great local grocery market. Very similar to Smart & Final in California. A really large selection of disposable ware. Also a dedicated section of Asian and local food. There is a big mix of commercial and residential size goods. Plenty of frozen meat, fruit and vegetable in commercial sizes. Also has a small but good hot food selection. read more

This is a great supermarket in a rather uncommon location in Kahului, but worth visiting. Well-stocked with local and Asian groceries, fresh (usually) produce and a nice selection of alcoholic beverages. You'll find many items priced much lower than at other markets (but not all). A keen eye can find the good deals. My favorite finds so far are: cans of thai iced tea for 99c, $17 handles of decent sake, and $5 boxes of matcha green tea powder. Check it out. read more

I love coming to this store to buy local and ethnic items. They are also good for any party or catering needs and very reasonable. They have a fresh selection of local produce as well as local products. Their sale items can't be beat and the employees are very friendly and helpful. I love walking the aisles to see what they have, sometimes you can come across super reduced in-store specials. The only downside is that parking maybe a challenge when they are busy. read more

I want to give a shout out to Brian for devoting an entire island to craft beer in this store recently. This island mainly stocks Stone Distribution beers that are shipped, warehoused, delivered and displayed refrigerated. Beer is a fresh food product and should be treated that way and finally Stone Distribution is doing that on Maui and IGD is supporting that by offering a pretty fair selection of their lineup.
