I don't usually write reviews for grocery stores, but the exceptional service I received this afternoon from one employee truly deserves to be recognized. For the past several days, I've been stopping by Safeway after work, hoping to order a custom mini cake for my child's birthday. Unfortunately, each time I arrived, the bakery had already closed. Since today was my child's birthday and I hadn't been able to place a custom order, I was fully prepared to simply purchase a premade mini cake. I asked Sandy if she would be able to quickly draw a basketball on top of one of the premade cakes. Instead, she went above and beyond. Sandy brought out a fresh cake and created a special basketball cake right there on the spot! When my child saw the cake, his eyes lit up, and he was overcome with so many emotions! Mahalo nui loa, Sandy, for making my kiddo's birthday extra sweet! You have no idea how much my Ohana appreciates you taking the extra time and going above and beyond to do something so kind and thoughtful for my child. I have to continue the one star streak, today's review is for the self check out line. The female employee here is consistently unfriendly. We (me, and my 2 elderly parents) were trying to get today's free offer item which was the Gatorade. We all have our own accounts. Today she yelled at me for inputting my father's phone number and not using my own phone number and accused me of using other peoples numbers. I told her this is my father's phone number and i'm helping him. My father couldn't remember if he used his home or cell number so an error popped out. She made a huge scene yelling at me rather than just leaving us alone or helping, Leaving us alone would be better than yelling at us and making a scene. Then she starts harassing my mom who already has her receipt to make sure her phone number matches the receipt and starts accusing her of who knows what. Then she starts printing a paper trail of me to show proof i'm trying to get more than one free item. All this while making a scene in the store. I left without getting my father's gatorade because it's simply not worth the hassle for a free item.I absolutely hate coming to this Safeway. It's so much drama, Zero Aloha and get accused of who knows what. did she think i'm stealing? fraud using strangers numbers when we're using our own? Who knows but i absolutely hate coming here. I swear I haven't seen that price for Pudding Rings since before Covid-19, so I came down here only to get disappointed as Safeway ran out of Pudding Rings. Buwahahahahahahaha! Absolutely the rudest customer service for Western Union that I have ever experienced.

I'd provide zero starts if I could. Does management of the akaneohe store ever look at this. Does corporate ever look at these reviews? Do they even have a full time manager that does anything other than sit in an office. Ive never seen ever a manager walking the store looking at inventory. Talking to customers. Nothing about this store is very friendly even to say hello. Checking to make sure the experience is good. My major major major issue and this has been going on for four years is - 1. On July 14th I bought Kamainah Farms grass-fed hamburger at $14.99 in the store. Not till I got home did I see that the date was to use by July 14th. I cooked some of it on July 14th. I should not have bought it but that was all there was. By today, July 16th it smelled strange while I was cooking it and the flavor was off. So I wasted $14.99 because I had to throw over half of it away. 1. They do not check the dates on stock and are selling expired or day of expiration. Multiple times I have seen Saba hummus expired on the shelf 3x in the past 2 months. When I brought it to the attention to the person at the manager desk their was no saying Im sorry or anything. I have to waste my time bringing it back. I think all they are interested in is money and they do that thibking nobody will bring it back. Milk has gone bad because when I was having medical issues they brought me milk that was expiring in 3 days. 3. Same thing with their cut up fruit. There wanting you to buy these rather large containers of cut up fruit - selling them at $7.99 each. Buy 2 get 3rd free. It shoulfd be buy one get one free. So your spending $15.00 for this cut up fruit that has a date of expiration of the day your buying it. Rarely do i buy it because it's so expensive. But two days ago I bought some and two days later it's starting to not be good. You can get watermelon for less then that on the mainland so I dont understand why it's so expensive. You need to hire more people to look at this inventory - if a customer is noting this all the time there is something wrong. And its going on too long. Its taking advantage of people and im sure if one of the workers or the manager was ill and sick at home. They would not appreciate having to turn around and return the product because it has an expired expiration date or is expiring the day it was bought. And in the case of a gallon of milk - expiring 3 days later. Not everybody has family or is living with a big family that needs all the food or can use it the day it expires. To me Safeway is a company that sells over priced food because they can. They dont care about the customer. The employees and managers aren't very effective or show much consideration or caring for the customer experience. They never apologize in a meaningful way fir selling food that is expired. And the basic feeling to me is they could care less. read more

I go to Safeway sometimes to get my usual stuff and when things are on sale. $5 Fridays are usually something I don't get since I work and usually most of the items are sold out. I definitely think it is convenient and a good deal sometimes. Plenty of parking and plenty of shopping carts and baskets. read more

Safeway has gotten rid of several Employees who harassed elders in the Kaneohe store I'm assuming as they are no longer there. The digital coupons on their online account ads save me money so I shop there far more than ever now. The self check lines are long but the wait isn't as there are 6 stalls so a single line goes fast. The internet accounts track your buying so themn they give you Safeway4U coupons for things you normally buy--which really helps when food is at an all time HIGH and retired salaries haven't budged:( so, MUCH IMPROVED, SAFEWAY! Yay! The only star removed is because they still run out of many items and won't issue you a 'raincheck' unless you come back AGAIN and it's still out. I shop at Kaneohe's Safeway weekly, and rarely have issues with their customer service. Sandy works in several departments, and is always willing to go out of her way to help me. She is friendly, courteous and professional. Arleen who works in customer service also goes out of her way to answer any questions I might have. She is also courteous and professional. I spend a lot of time in this Safeway honestly. At least twice a week. There's a lot of amazing employees that work here, BUT Jaime in the deli is beyond correction at this point. I've handled her passive aggressive attitude and her dismissal for years with grace. But today I am done. While waiting in line, staring at two piles of available fried chicken, Jaime decided that she would verbally attack anyone trying to work and help. She started on a crazy personal rant about something the employees said that was incorrect. She proceeded to call them all stupid and R*TARDED. Loudly. In front of at least 20 customers who were waiting patiently. Everyone kept saying they were more than happy to take chicken that's not fresh out of the fryer and she lost her marbles over it and aggressively ordered another deli employee to bag them up. Now this is not a one time issue. This is an ongoing issue with her. She's rude. Dismissive. Passive aggressive. I don't know if she's on a power trip over the deli or what but I've hit my limit on what I can handle. They are NEVER prepared for any sale. They are NEVER kind or helpful. I am sick of driving over to spend money only to be made to feel like a problem for wanting to buy something from the deli!! Every other department I've encountered in the store is always so awesome and on top of things. She just makes the entire vibe of the store go sideways. Even the poor sushi counter was begging her to just give the chicken to people. The name calling is where I'm drawing the line on this now. Especially when yelling the R word in front of so many people. I have family with down syndrome. I'm still in shock at her so freely yelling a slur like that at 8am in front of everyone. Customer Service at Kaneohe Safeway embarrassed me by turning down my request to purchase gift cards on April 9th, 2025. I was treated like a scammer in front of all other customers right in front of the Customer Service desk. I told the cashier that I wanted to purchase these 2 gift cards ($500 each) for my daughter's and son-in-law's birthdays. The cashier had my credit card and my valid Hawaii's driver license in possession but claimed that Safeway wanted to avoid scammers. There is absolute no excuse for Safeway to treat customers like this! I've been shopping at Beretania Safeway in the early 80's and then the Kaneohe one since 1987 till now. Talk about customer service - this is the worst experience ever! I'm considering shopping groceries at Times and Foodland instead from now on. I filed complaint with BBB and Clayton Eto (Safeway District Manager) called on April 15th and promised to do a better job in training/educating Safeway cashiers to screen customers (from scammers) who want to purchase gift cards. Safeway Kaneohe has lousy customer service. No one in the store is friendly at all. I'm hesitant to ask anyone for help because it's like it's a bother to them. On December 13 one of the cashiers needed some help with the deals because the system had a change that I was not familiar with and he wasn't sure. He wasn't sure and asked 3 women for help (they seems to be in management positions) and they just brushed him aside and giving me that look like do this beforehand. As this was the only line open at 4 PM the line behind me was getting longer as 7 impatient people were waiting. Not one of these 3 women took the time to help. It was a bother to them. To me customer service is more important than getting whatever job you need to do . I ususally buy my prime rib for Christmas here because the price is good , but every year I dread because the big Hawaiian guy that works in the meat department is such a scrooge. the whole Safeway is like you ask a question you're a bother. First and foremost I just wanted to say thank you to Safeway deli for being open and serving up hot chicken during this horrible weather. But I wanted to shine some light on something that I witnessed today while standing in line waiting for my chicken . I was standing behind a Karen who was mouthing off to the deli manger being rude and obnoxious, budding in trying to tell the deli manger how to run her deli when clearly she was doing her best with the little helped she had. She even went as far as cutting the deli manger off when she was trying to correct her own employee just to make sure the customers was being told the right information. There was no time at all did I ever hear this poor manger call any of her employees out of their name or use any disrespectful slur.. It broke my heart because at the end of the day this poor manger was just doing her best to serve her customers and keep everyone happy even the rude ,angry and impatient ones . . I feel Safeway higher up needs a better protocol for things like this because this is unacceptable their employees let alone a manger shouldn't have to put up with rude and disrespectful customer and still try to serve them. After getting my chicken i got the manger name but wasn't able to speak with her personally because she was super busy . Their food is extremely expensive. One lemon $1.99 each, let's round it off to $2.00 for one lemon. One lime $1.49 each, lets round that off at $1.50 for one lime. Their employees are not very friendly, I would put it at a low work morale. You can ask a question and they act like we are bothering them. Not all the employees are rude, but enough, that I'm checking out Target across the street. They can't be any worse then Safeway and hopefully their food items are a little cheaper. The best deal is going to Costco. You can get 4 to 6 times the amount of food at costco for what your paying at Safeway for 1 item of food. Is Safeway ripping off their customers? The best deal is their crunchy delicious juicy fried chicken thigh and drumstick special! Eight pieces for $5! Limit is two orders and there is always a wait time, sometimes as long as 40 minutes! I always put in my order then shop. You must return near the time frame given you otherwise they will give your order away! That didn't happen to me but I've witnessed it. As a townie who spends quite a bit of time in Kaneohe, I find myself looking for convenience and this Safeway exceeds my expectations. Located in Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center just across Windward Mall on Kamehameha Highway, this Safeway is MASSIVE. In addition to an impressive meat, seafood, beer/wine and liquor department, this Safeway also has a bakery, service deli, floral section. You'll also find Bank of Hawaii inside this Safeway location. And this Safeway is open 24/7. With lots of parking, be aware that this Safeway can get crazy on $5 Fridays. When you advertise with so many great deals on this day, don't be surprised to see the parking lots packed with many shoppers that day. What really caught me by surprise was the DMV kiosk in this Safeway. Without standing in the long lines at DMV or satellite city halls, you can pay for your car registration here. I was first informed by a colleague of this kiosk. He was going to be out-of-country for an extensive period of time and asked me to pay for his car registration. I was very skeptical at first but indeed this can be done. I recently had to pay for my car registration and with a hectic work schedule, I would usually go to one of the satellite city halls and wait patiently in their long line. But then I recalled this Safeway so I walked in with my credit card and made my way this kiosk that is near the main entrance/exit. Just follow the instructions on the screen. You will need to provide your license plate number and billing zip code, as well as have your credit card on hand. Once completed, your car registration with the car registration sticker is issued on the spot. How convenient is that? And guess what? No extra fees incurred for paying at the kiosk versus paying at the satellite city hall. No Safeway is perfect. I've had my fair share of standing in long lines with not many open registers. Not ideal conditions but they now have self check out lines. How convenient is that? But what stands out is that I find the staff here of a different breed. Not sure if this is the Kaneohe upbringing but some of the staff will call me "uncle" as how you would respect someone older than you in Hawaii and quite friendly to assist you with finding certain items. With the above mentioned factors, this Safeway is worthy of a 5-star rating from me. read more

This is the closest grocery store to where I'm staying during my multi-month vacation. There's no need to find another big box retailer as Safeway has everything I need. Don't forget to apply for and obtain a frequent shopper card. Doing so will save you money on certain products. Since flying in on Wednesday, I've already shopped here twice. This is a nice Safeway. But on $5.00 Friday, it's super busy and if you don't go early enough, by the afternoon most items will be gone. The deli section. Sometimes I think this section needs a little more help. They have a lot of great things but now, they cut your deli cold cuts fresh, not like before where they used to have pre-cut deli meats, so it takes a while to process a customer who is ordering deli cold cuts and cheese too. The lines. Almost every time I go here, the line is always long. I'm glad they created self check out. But that line gets long too. ‍ It's a clean store. Just most times always busy. read more

2 Stars: To the bakery for doing a fantastic job making my son's birthday cake! -3 Stars: The manager is dumb as rocks. Because the bakery was closed the manager had to get the cake for us. The manager brings out the cake, UNBOXED, NO GLOVES, and places' it on top of the register counter. He didn't even wipe it down first! We stood there for 10 MINUTES while he looked for a cake container. In the mean time customers were waking near us, coughing and sneezing, with the cake out in the open still unboxed. Safeway located across from Windward mall, it is nice and organized. They are setup similarly to other Safeways, but are not too busy. It is convenient for residents nearby, but also for visitors at Windward mall who want to buy groceries or something to eat/drink before leaving the Windward side. read more

Went to the customer service counter to use their Western Union service and asked the lady at the counter if I could cash a money order. She rudely said that they don't cash money orders and that they never did. I asked even with the Western Union service and she again rudely responded no and that I would have to go to my bank. I said I didn't have a bank here yet and she just shrugged her shoulders. I asked if she knew where I could cash a money order and she responded with "your bank". I get that she could be having a bad morning but she definitely could have been a bit nicer about it. No need for the attitude when your whole job is providing customer service. read more
