Did some grocery shopping at Tokyo Central. Lots of Japanese goods imported as well as lovally produced. PPRM owns Tokyo Central and Marukai in the USA...part of Don Quixote. Fair amount of ready to eat foods - not as much as a Don Ki store. They are in the old Times location at the Kailua Shopping Center....Times is under the same ownership group. I purchased some Kiriotoshi beef - made for shabu-shabu - but I just wanted to fry it for my lunch. Sale priced...and reasonable. Open daily from 600a till 1000p. Lots of parking in the shopping center...stalls are good sized. It is usually busy, so parking can be problematic. read more

TC replaced the Times Supermarket, which I do miss though there is one in Kaneohe. Stopping by for their sushi and bento counters is a favorite pasttime of mine. Normally, the prepacked, grab-and-go food items are fresh, delicious, and easy to eat. Unfortunately, tonight's choice that I picked was not. I stopped at TCM after playing a late round of golf and picked up a couple of items for a quick dinner. I guess the cold somen salad had been sitting in the chilled food area for quite some time, because after I got home and opened the cover to enjoy it, I discovered that the noodles were frozen into a solid block. Even after microwaving it for over a minute, they simply crumbled into chunks of "noodle ice" that wouldn't come apart. The other items were heated, so it was no longer a "cold" salad, but the taste was at least passable. They really should be checking their food items periodically, to ensure the quality of what they sell; and I'm surprised that they weren't even discounted by that time. Such a fun place to go through and check out. We ended up buying a lot of things to try. Found the viral chocolate coated ice cream in the shape of a fruit. These were grapes and it was very delicious. Even tasted like fruit jellies within the ice cream. Parking can be hit or miss with the lot sharing stalls with many other businesses. This Japanese Supermarket is where the Times Supermarket used to be. It feels like Times/local supermarket had a baby with a Japanese supermarket and this is the result. Upon entering on the right are grab-n-go desserts and meals. Local veggies. Japanese toiletries. There are sushi plates and poke bowls near the cashiers. Some items are super reasonable and others not that reasonable. Just gotta look around and know your prices. Friendly clerks. Lots of parking in this strip mall but at certain times it can get busy. Oh, how I wished I lived closer to this only Tokyo Central in Hawaii. I know it's basically like a baby Marukai with a hint of Don Quijote and Times, but it has more unique and quality items for their meats, produce, bentos, beers, and etc., and also it's special Japan fairs somewhat similar to Marukai. Just less often. This place is located at the former Times Supermarket location at the Kailua Shopping Center along Kailua Road with an entrance directly from Hahani St. There's an okay amount of parking, but it can get busy on certain days. Inside is spacious, clean, and bright. Each section and aisle are organized and easy to browse. There are a lot of variety of items at almost every section with a strong focus on specialty products from Japan, especially its snacks. The meat section offers a wider variety of cuts and the quality looks better than most places. Overall, a nice store to shop in, and a big welcome to the East side of the island as it's the only one that offers this much Asian goods. Everything is similar to Marukai, Don Quijote, and Times, but there are a bit more unique selections and more quality products compared to its fellow stores. Staff is friendly. This was a disappointment for me since Sundays they don't have hot food for sale. Also I wanted the sukiyaki beef bowl that they don't have here but they sell on the mainland. We got two things of nigiri blue fin tuna and scallops. The blue fin toro was alittle chewy for me. The scallop was yummy. And good sizes. read more

Tokyo in Kailua... Sad to see the sign of "Times" leave Kailua though welcome something that is hard to find are some asian grocery items though I'm not from the area I can just imagine that finding some ingredients to make various asian items is very much needed. Walking in is the first thing I see are various Hello Kitty items of all kinds along with snacks totes and various Japanese merchandises. Right along side seems to be the most popular that I see many find the need to stop and browse are the hot grab and go bentos and is quite an impressive variety from the classic tempura and chicken katsu to okonomiyaki and omusoba which really got me drooling lol! It's nice that they do label some potential allergy ingredients and right beside that are the chilled bentos along with some fruit sando. Poke and sushi counters are there as well so that doesn't leave much room for an actual grocery store but somehow manage to squeeze all the basic necessities as well, just nice to see this option for the local folks to have though parking at Kailua Shopping Center is the real challenge as the lot is quite small and with just one way directed traffic can cause you to wait behind ones that are waiting for stalls but is it worth the wait, it sure is. Stumbled onto this market while my husband was shopping at the local bookstore nearby. I was starving and always love a market. Walked in and couldn't believe my eyes! As I walked down each aisle, my astonishment just got bigger and bigger ... why don't we have this market at home in LA? And what is it doing here in little Kailua? Luckily I snapped out of my dream state and got to the sushi station. Absolutely unbelievable selections of premade sushi - I could not choose. Finally I grabbed some hamachi at a ridiculously low price and headed for checkout. All I could think of is, can I move here? And if so, can I just come here everyday? The hamachi was even better than it looked and I reluctantly shared with my husband. As we were only visiting Kailua for the day, I almost cried when we had to leave. Still dreaming of Tokyo Central. I wish I could give zero stars. Sometimes I loathe grocery shopping in Kailua. This time at checkout at Tokyo Central (Date: 10/10/2025, Time: 17:36:28), I was digging through my backpack trying to find my eco bag that I usually have on me, which wasn't there, and I don't want to buy another one since I have so many, and I have a cooler in the car, so I asked the cashier if I could take the basket out to the car and bring it right back. Local girl was like "Sure, of course!" Then some other older Asian female employee that overheard was like "I'll walk you out to your car." And as we were walking to my car she asked "Do you really have a bag in your car?" I opened the back, opened my cooler meticulously packed with ice packets, unloaded my pretty hefty purchase, and handed her the basket. Like, you let people walk expensive grocery carts to their cars and leave the lot! I don't appreciate being treated like a thief. I've never had any problems like this in Central Oahu or town for that matter. Makes me wonder what these retail stores put up with on the daily. I came home to realize local girl charged me for 7 bunches of kale instead of 1, so I had to drive back there to resolve the issue. That was probably an innocent mistake as at least that's in the same column on a 10-key. But I think my mistreatment as a customer will be taken up to corporate because that other woman's (let's call her Karen) annual salary is probably much more than that store's annual loss of baskets, so a reduction of workforce would make sense for wasting time judging customers based on casual appearance and generating mistrust with regular customers which will result in me and others not shopping there in the future. read more

After seeing post after post about Tokyo Central on my IG feed, the excitement was building. I thought this was going to be something new and innovative. But sadly I wasn't that impressed. I guess it may be because I live somewhere where I can go to Don Quijote, Marukai, or even Daiso within 10 minutes. Tokyo Central is a blend of Times Supermarket and Don Quijote. You can get American brand foods and Japanese brand foods all in the same place. It's an awesome mix to bring the best of both worlds together. You can grab a poke bowl and a bento all in the same place. This store caters to locals and tourists alike. There's a Hawaii souvenirs section for the tourists to grab omiyage to take home. There's a Sanrio character goods section with Bandai Namco goods right next to it as well. I overheard an employee telling a customer that Times Kailua was the lowest producing Times store. This is why they rebranded it to become Tokyo Central. I must say it's a step up from just a Times Supermarket. So while it may not have knocked off my socks, I must say for Kailua, it is impressive. You don't see these types of grocery stores in that city. It gives access to popular Japanese items to those living in the area so they don't have to make a trip into town. read more

This place was great when it first opened. Rows and rows of different japanese specialties . Me and my husband loved going there for a treat. However, I went there yesterday and the store had reverted to the feel of the old Time's supermarket. There was a bad smell that hit me right away. And the "Japanese" section had practically disappeared! What previously had been a major part of the store now seems like an afterthought. Only a few rows. I bought some matcha mochi but when I got home found that it was all melty and gooey, like it had been stored improperly. (Still in date) Won't be going back. Walking into Japan and immerse in egg sandwich and sushi. Endless items to look at, one can probably spend an entire morning here looking at all these interesting and delicious food items. Times Supermarket closed, and in its place, Tokyo Central opened! I missed the Grand Opening on 5-10-24, and the FREE exclusive green EcoBag with $50 purchase. However, this cute kitty bag is still available for sale. Other reviews and photos focused on the food items from Japan. I mainly looked at the Sanrio x Creme collaboration merchandise. I've seen some of these cosmetic items at other stores, and I have been to Tokyo Central on the mainland. There weren't too many new things for me. 5-26-24 As soon as we took one step in it smells like a seafood market to me. To the right are prepackaged prepared food items. Further to the right are fresh fruits and vegetables that looked fresh and organized. I recently read in an article that the healthiest items are on the perimeter so we followed that advice and did not go row to row. It seemed most shoppers were like us just curious since it recently opened. Word of advice don't just finish a meal before you come cuz you're less likely to put items into your shopping cart. We only bought the pink mochi and the pink pickled garlic. A good looking variety of cuts of meat followed by fish and sashimi. From the left of my vision I saw scallops and duck in the freezer section. They have cartoned beverages followed by beer and other alcohol. I looked quickly as we passed the ice cream section. I didn't see Roselani brand. It kinda felt like Marukai or alittle like H Mart to me: no spacious aisles and not airy or bright like Safeway Waikele as a comparison. It didn't have the wow vibe but I'm glad there were customers shopping. The cashiers I saw while we were leaving looked seasoned. Congratulations on your opening in Kailua. My daughter asked if we could check Tokyo Central in Kailua and I was all for it. This little Japanese grocery store is located in a strip mall where Kailua Times use to be. There's lots of free parking. This place is like a pared down Don Quixote convenience store. They had a nice assortment of snacks, seafood from Japan and different types of Japanese ice cream and bottled sodas. There were also lots of ready-made options to grab and go if you're in a rush for lunch or dinner. They also have a decent sized Sanrio and adult beverage section. Compared to the Don Quixote in town, the store was very clean, organized and there was a lot of aisle space. Prices are pretty good considering a lot of it is imported from Japan. I was waiting for the hype of a new grocery store on the windward side to die down before finally visiting. Let me start off by saying that's it's OVERLY HYPED. Like the previous reviews - it's literally a don quejote but a MINI version. The store is small and carries only so much of everything. The produce section is way smaller than a typical grocery store but seems to offer a variety of Asian fruits and vegetables. They offer different varieties of ramen from instant dry ramen, frozen ramen and fresh ramen. The frozen section carried various Japanese desserts and frozen food. The meat section had sukiyaki and shabu cuts of meats perfect for yakiniku or hot pot. The seafood section was very limited to a few sashimi grade fish, ikura and tobiko. They also had frozen seafood from Japan. The snacks and condiments aisles were small and carried only a few different brands but mainly Japanese brands or items from Japan. I did spot a few American and local brands as well. As far as prices, they did offer a few "affordable" items that were on sale for their grand opening. But like any grocery store with imported goods - some items weren't budget friendly. The cashier was very nice and was helpful during our checkout. I really liked her but forgot her name :( Overall - I love how we finally have a decent Asian grocery store on this side of the island. It's convenient for anyone who lives on this side of the island and don't want to make the drive to town. I wouldn't recommend the drive to all my town peeps, the don quejote in town is so much better imo! read more

If you are from central/west side Oahu....SAVE THE DRIVE. Also, DON'T BELIEVE THE SALE PRICES for grand opening. I walked around DonQ Pearl City the day before I came here, and the prices are basically the same. IMO, they're just saying it's a deal, but I feel like it wasn't. Tokyo Central is brought to you by our favorite blue penguin: Don Quijote. If you've been to DonQ, you've been to Tokyo Central. The packaging, products, and signage is all the same, except maybe there's a little more green everywhere to try to re-brand it as not DonQ....but it is. Basically, this store was opened to make more Japanese products available to the area. When you think about it, the competing grocery stores nearby are Target and WholeFoods, so this store is in a niche of it's own. But would I inconvenience myself to come here from West side? No, not really. I was very disappointed because I walked in expecting this place to be another Nijiya or Mitsuwa market. My suggestion for this place? Get rid of the gundam and tourist section and make it a seating area that offers customers more fresh/hot food to eat in store. Just like Nijiya, I want to be able to buy a ramen, make, and eat it in the store. If you'll notice 90% of the tables in front of other surrounding stores were taken up by your customers because they had nowhere else to sit and eat; my husband and I ate the takoyaki on a bench outside. read more

Have you been to Tokyo Central? If you're in Kailua, make a quick stop for some sweet treats or to grab a bento or a sandwich and even poke. Tokyo Central reminds me a lot of Marukai and Don Quijote. They sell a lot of snacks from chips to crackers to candies and mochi. What really caught my eye was the prawn as I've never seen it at any other supermarket here in Oahu. If any of you know of other places that sell them, please share with me. I love prawns! They also have alcohol and food tasting. Today, we tried takoyaki. Takoyaki is typically a flour mixture and molded in a round ball filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger, and green onions. It can also be made with other seafood or meat of your choice. But the one they sell is ready made. All you need to do is warm it up on a pan or a microwave. They also had Japanese liqueur tasting. They had Choya Umeshu, Choya Yuzu, and Choya Umeshu Green Tea. I tried all 3, and I love it all. But for today, I just bought Choya Umeshu Green Tea and the Choya Yuzu. I honestly picked up because Junko was so friendly and very knowledgeable in what she's advertising! Even with masked on, you can tell she's happy and smiling. I really like that! The old Times Kailua in Tokyo Centrql. Somewhat a cluttered Japanese store with most everything from Japan. A good oriental store for the local neighborhood, but I think Daiei and Marukai is better. Prices may be similar at all stores. Tokyo Central doesn't have a great hot/cold food selection compared to the other guys, and was most disappointed to spend nearly 9.00 for a dried grilled thin salmon bento. Upon checking out, there was only one active cashier open and a line of customers checking out. Not an overall good experience. read more

Decided to come check this place out since we had stuff to do on the Windward side for the day. Located in the spot where Times Supermarket used to be, in a small strip mall where Lanikai Juice is. The parking is terrible so pack your patience. Cramped stalls, and traffic hold ups while people wait for people to leave and not enough room to go around the car waiting. Noticed some people were parking at the park right next to the strip mall and walking over. Luckily we got a spot right in front of the store . We didn't realize that the day before was their grand opening and this was day 2 of being open, needless to say the place was packed! It is your typical Asian market, with goods stacked on shelves , on the floor, in every available space with just enough room to maneuver your cart. Sort of organized but random stuff all over. Specializing in goods from Japan, they have it all! Hot and ready food to grab and go, a poke counter, pastries and desserts, seafood counter with fresh fish and bentos of sushi, nigiri, candies and snacks from Japan, produce, a meat counter with fresh meats, for grilling and hot pot. Frozen section, teas, coffees, liquor, they have a Local section and American aisle where you can find staples like Spam, Spaghetti Sauce, pasta. They have other Asian goods as well, Filipino, Korean, Chinese. There was a small container of strawberries from Japan for $20 and this cute small melon for $20, (we didn't get that) We bought a hot, freshly cooked sweet potato from Japan, so sweet! A bunch of snacks, a bento with Toro nigiri, a multi layer crepe dessert, a 4 pack of beer, green onions, chili garlic oil ( a huge jar), furikake, pancit noodles, a frozen Tamago block to make sushi at home and a box of Gen Mai Cha tea bags. Just a bunch of random stuff! It was cool to check out and good for the people on the Windward side. But I will stick to going to DQ and Marukai, closer to the Westside! read more

Tokyo Central opened in Kailua a couple years after I moved workplaces from Kailua to West Oahu. Sad for me, but also maybe good thing for my wallet, as I think I'd be shopping there weekly, if not! While the store is part of the Times/Don Quijote/Fujioka's/Marukai/Shima's/Big Save (PPRM) family of stores, I noticed some overlap of products from those stores, but Tokyo Central definitely has more of my favorite products that I usually only find in Japan. It's clean and bright, packed full of merchandise, and I was super happy to find Japanese apple juice (it tastes like real apples, not that weird stuff they sell in the U.S.), a ton of Jagabee potato items, and a great counter of chiraishi bowls, sashimi, and ahi bombs (not so much Japan fare, but a local favorite here). It was the first place I've seen some Japanese ice cream items such as Coolish, too. Tokyo Central is located at the former Times Supermarket location in the strip mall, so parking is easy--especially at 7 am, when we went. It's way off of my beaten path these days, but if I'm on the Windward side, I'm definitely planning to make a stop! I love this place. Unfortunately, people remember the bad experiences. On Sunday 11/23 I was surprised to get attitude when I ask what time do they put out all the hot food. She was upset because she was by herself that morning. I understand her frustration, however I was not rude about it and just wanted to get a time to come back. Otherwise, I like the selection and variety in this store. The prices are pretty reasonable and produce looks great. I want to love Tokyo Central because I love Japanese food, but the place has horrible air quality--it smells very strongly of their deep fat fryers. I feel like my clothes and hair will smell that way if I stay in there too long. They desperately need to upgrade their ventilation to dramatically increase the air changes per hour so the place doesn't stink of atomized grease. Also, it's hard to find anything. They need better signage for each aisle. It is also hard to find an employee on the floor to get help. The audio recording out front is just noise, is quite annoying, and not at all inviting. Reminds me of being at the gas station. The recording isn't edited to be short enough to give information to a passerby anyway so I wish they would just get rid of it. I guess they're trying to be affordable, but they also have a lot of very low quality products. Definitely need to read the labels. I hope they can make some improvements ASAP. The way it is now I tend to avoid the place. read more

Don't be fooled, this is just a mini Don Quijote! Mini but cute, and they seem to have a lot of fresh food like sashimi and sushi. From the get-go, the store is a clean, well-organized space with a variety of sections--from a fresh produce aisle to poke and bentos. It's great to see familiar faces from Times Supermarket now working at Tokyo Central! The staff were friendly and seemed genuinely excited about the new store. Their sushi station has fresh poke, nigiri, and rolls. I saw some aburi sushi that looked delicious and fresh! They also had a self-serve deli with local favorites perfect for curating a bento. I loved looking through the ice cream section with my favorite frozen treats from Japan. They even have a section just for different jellies, my fav! The snack aisles here go crazy. If you're on the hunt for Asian snacks in Kailua, this is the spot. Don't believe the hype. Lol. If you're a townie like me - this 30 minute drive is completely not worth wasting your gas as it seems like a smaller version of a Donki. On the bright side - the store is clean and there's a lot of parking. Downside - the employees (especially the cashiers) are not that friendly. You can pretty much find the same things as the Donki in town, so unless you're already here or live In Kailua then it's not worth coming to as most of the grocery items and hot food bar items seems to be almost identical. read more

We were sadden by news that our nearly 70 years old Times Supermarket was closing, but happy to learned we will be gaining a Specialty Asian Market, Hawaii's first Tokyo Central. There are currently 7 California locations, but not here. We needed one on the Windward side since Don Quijote and Marukai stores were in Honolulu. The store is owned by the same owner (Pan Pacific International Holdings Corp) as Times Supermarkets, Marukai, & Don Quijote. Even Shima's Supermarket & Big Save Markets, Fujioka Wine Times are part of them. If you still need items other from Times Supermarket and live in Kailua, you can drive to Times Supermarket in Kaneohe or Shima's Supermarket in Waimanalo. Tokyo Central in my opinion is like a mini Marukai. Tokyo Central doesn't have the food concessions like at Marukai, but they have a Sushi and Poke sections. The former Times Pharmacy is now a Sushi section. This store offers more Asian products, some local products, essential products and regular groceries. For the steak lovers, they sell their $15,99 steak plates. They use their special technique so their steaks are so soft. There offer a $15.99 Wagyu Kushi plate lunch. Tokyo Central uses Japanese rice. As for desserts, there were cake slices or whole cakes by Soleil Hawaii, Mille cake slices from Japan, donuts and pastries. There was a Fruits & vegetables section, and other sections of Japanese snacks, frozen products imported from Japan, cold & hot to go foods, Self serve Deli of Japanese foods. Just need to come earlier in the day, since later in the evening, the all the prepared food were sold out! In the meat section, I even saw some Sterling Silver Premium meats, and Chairman's Reserve meats. Towards the exit was the liquor section. The nicely renovated store was clean with their beautiful & clear signs. I heard the same workers from Times Supermarket were still there and the store added even more workers. The gift cards is the Times Supermarket gift cards! They are open from 6am-10am daily! There's an Ahi Cutting at 11am Saturday, 5/11/24. Too bad I'm not able to attend! Nice addition to the Kailua location. We don't have to drive into town to get some unique Asian products. May 10, 2024 was their Grand Opening and I wish them well! read more

Tokyo Central just opened in Kailua. It wasn't really a new grand opening since the same owners still own this store. A "rebranding" is more like it. It's basically still times, just with all Japanese products. The parking lot is still junk too. I guess times ended up not being able to compete with Whole Foods and Target, and the closed their doors. Very soon after, though, Tokyo Central opened. They still have a poke counter, a grocery section (extactly where the times grocery section was) and a lot of alcohol. The layout is pretty much the same and it still feels like times in a lot of ways. Anyway, our extended family went on the day they opened and the Don quijote character was out taking pictures with everyone. It's a little scary that Don quijote, times, Shima's and now this place are all owned by the same company. Anyway, we decided to come on Sunday to check it out. It was crowded with other people checking it out too. We ended up spending exactly $50.06 and the cashier gave us a free reusable shopping bag. We didn't even know about the promotion, but I will accept free bags no questions asked haha. We bought a lot of snacks you can find at Don quijote. Actually, I'm pretty sure everything in this store is also sold at Don quijote, but it's nice that I don't have to drive to town anymore to get some things. I think I still prefer H mart for produce, kimchee and ramen selection, but I'll definitely be back to Tokyo Central when I run out of Japanese rice crackers, ochazuke mix and hot pot ingredients. Unfortunately, a lot of the freshly prepared food items were sold out when we went, so I'll have to go back to try some of those as well. I'm honestly a little sad Times closed. I liked times, but I would shop at Shima's more often because it's closer for me. Now that Tokyo Central is open, I hope they continue stocking things that I would usually go to town for. read more
