There was only one cashier working on this day and the self check outs were having problems. I was running late but went to stand in line. That one cashier was having a problem with a customer and there was a women employee with a lei on telling everyone in ear shot that it was her birthday. She started to ring people up and when it was my turn she started to roughly throw my groceries while checking me out, lucky I didn't have eggs. She did not ask if I needed a bag or if I needed help out or even a thank you. I was thinking of saying something to her but decided not too. Upon arriving to the register I was checking out with my aunty an the cashier was yelling out loud about her EBT card so loud that people were starring an made me feel very uncomfortable so I decided to not purchase my items due to her being over the top rude. I had to pick up a few items before heading home plus stop at the Bank of Hawaii on a Sunday morning. I was hungry so I picked up the Hawaiian Roll from the sushi counter. That satisfied my hunger needs for sure. The Roll was freshly made, plentiful and tasty. Shopping at Safeway is convenient. Made a order for flowers, balloons and cupcakes in advance for my daughter's birthday. Since her day falls around Mother's Day every year, we always know to order in advance. Set pick up for 800am for everything to be picked up, ended up getting there at 900am because we were running all over the day of. Get to the floral department they were BUSY. I ask them about my order and they are super confused. Can't find it anywhere. Send my husband to the bakery while I wait and they are still struggling to find it. Saw the lady who assisted me I believe she was the head of the department (Darlene) and she started looking around for my order sheet. Oh shoot no one blew up the balloon. No sorry, no one moment please. Gave the balloons to another girl who looked annoyed that she had to do it. When she finished she gave it to me again no sorry or thanks for waiting and they didn't give me my flowers! Told them again that I had flowers with my order and they found in in the back of the fridge. Bakery was great but floral department was the biggest mess and super unprofessional. I understand that Mother's Day was the next day so they were slammed but my prepaid order should be completed in a timely matter OR they could've been more apologetic that they made me wait. Will be back for cupcakes but never again for flowers or balloons. She was so nice when I made my order but it was like a different person when I went for pick up. I live in the area and come here all the time, but always neglect to give it a review. First of all, a lot of people feel like Safeway isn't local, but that's far from the truth. The workers are friendly and helpful. Ryan is one of the best cashiers and the management there are always looking to make sure that the service is up to par. Prices are good and even better, if you use the app. They don't have the best prices on some local products, but this is one of the few grocery stores on island that offers a large number of vegan and vegetarian choices, for example, Daiya Cheese and Chao slices. I also love their bakery and donuts (better any of the other grocery stores and even Kāne'ohe Bakery). The fact they're open 24 hours also helps. In terms of lines, I've never waited very long to go through check out, but I suppose that's subjective. However, I also don't understand how people can get so impatient about waiting for others. If people had more patience, the world would be a much better place. Side note: I wish they'd stop offering grocery bags, but that's a separate issue. read more

Around here in Hawaii, I normally don't go to Safeway as my first choice when it comes to groceries. That being said, I did stop here one time recently to get something to drink and look for some oranges. The interior of the store really needs some renovations done soon, and the place gets pretty crowded and tight at times. Customer service is okay for the most part, but I couldn't really find what I was looking for, and on top of that, the prices tend to be pricier and the quality of their products aren't really that great either. read more

Dear Safeway, I'm So Happy: But I should probably have written this update sooner. The Kaneohe Safeway has corrected most of their deficiencies. Last November I wrote an unflattering review regarding my experiences at this store. I'm happy to report that they have improved greatly and maintained their improvement over the last 6 months. Good Work, Safeway! They have maintained the improvements I'm no longer disappointed in this store! Long Lines: I complained about long lines and not enough check stands being opened. Problem solved! In fact, one day I witnessed every single check stand open and in use. There are like 10 or 12 check stands too. Unbelieveable! Normally 1, 2, or 3 cashiers max. were working regardless of how long the lines were. I visit this store weekly and can say with confidence that problem has been actively addressed. I am impressed! I'm so happy that I can get in and out of this store quickly. Empty Shelves: This was another issue that I noticed and addressed in my review. Recently shelves are being re-stocked. Empty shelves used to be a common sight. Now they are almost always stocked with at least some merchandise. There are still some empty shelves at times. But, I'm sincerely happy that this too has been corrected. read more

In general this Safeway is ok, but tried the deli ribs and chicken tenders this past Friday...seemed to be popular as have missed ribs in past...but found them dried out, chewy and bland. Since moving to the area we started shopping at this Safeway location. Personaly I don't care for this Safeway location. It feels disorginized. They don't carry alot of the things that the Kailua location does. The lighting in here is very strange. I don't care to shop in dim lighting. Some of the employees don't seem to really care about customer service. On one occasion at the check out. The cashier was having a full blown non work related conversation with the bag boy while she was scanning the groceries. To make it even better they were talking about my nephew. Somewhat of a typical Safeway with their usual Mainland inventory. However, on the day of my visit they lacked carrot cake in the bakery, couscous, and bottled tonic water. Due to the virus they have blocked on of their entrances. Not sure why since leeward Safeway's have their dual entrances open. Although I am most appalled by the sushi station there more specifically on the spicy ahi bowls I got today. Please Safeway! If you're reading this, let the sushi chef know that a spicy ahi bowl should not be 80% rice, 10% ACTUAL AHI, and 10% cucumbers! I've never had an ahi bowl with a load of cucumbers on the bottom to try and make it seem like there is a lot of ahi. Seriously one of the worst bowls I've had in my life! I've ordered my kids cupcakes for their class parties from here and they've always been pretty and delicious! My sons first birthday cake was ordered from here and it was hideous, but since then they've obviously gotten a new decorator and she's awesome my daughters cake ( pictures) was to celebrate her fifth birthday and I was very happy with the decor and of course it was yummy! A nice Safeway that has a deli, bakery, meat section with a butcher, and a maned seafood section. The store is always clean and the workers are friendly. This Safeway also has a Coin star, a Blockbuster Express, and a BOH branch. Best thing is that its open 24hrs. The seafood section is the best part of this Safeway in my opinion. The only reason why I have it 4 stars is because it is usually pricier than Times and Foodland but I always go here because of the location. Another reason it lost a star is because for some reason there is always too many customer and not enough cashiers, which creates a line. read more

Unfortunately for us, we shop there almost every night because it's the closest grocery store to us. Our experiences are usually less than satisfactory so we go to self serve. Last week we scanned our own order incorrectly and asked for a full refund so we could scan it correctly. The person on duty SCANNED all our items for a refund of $61+ (which would be the price we SHOULD have paid). We paid $68+ for our groceries but there was no way to get her to understand that our refund should have been $68+, the amount we paid. We eventually left $7+ short AND the employee said she needed to keep all receipts. Today, we go in to use a raincheck before it expires and bought ONE bag of red grapes. The cashier didn't know how to process the raincheck and called for the "manager". He (Alakai?) came over to correct the price. Then he has the nerve to inspect the raincheck in front of us and the seven other people in line behind us and accuse us of photocopying it and cutting it down to raincheck size! How very, very unprofessional of him and very embarrassing for us! For ONE bag of grapes! Our own fault for coming back...Things will change if Foodland does open at the mall. read more

The so called manager at the deli BRANDON Is HORRIBLE. He saw me standing in line for about 10 minutes while the other lady helped another guest and continued to walk past me several times without even asking if he could help me. This is the 2nd time that I have come in to get a breakfast burrito and the service was bad! The first time BRANDON was yelling at some Filipino lady because she was moving to slow and while making my burrito kept throwing all the food on top of it pissed off. Failed to even say thank you. Not that great We enjoyed shopping in Lahaina's Safeway on Maui. So we planned on coming here often....but ended up coming only once. The selection is just a lot smaller than in other stores somehow. Meat selection wasn't all that great....not the cuts I looked for. Also less choice when it comes about wine and booze. And then the pretty long lines.... Prices are ok, some good wine offers too....but still. We ended up going to Foodland more often, which was closer anyway.. Luckily we had a customer card for both Safeway and Foodland. I think I have given this Safeway ample time to get their act together before I write this scathing review. Actually, it's not just THIS Safeway, that needs some SERIOUS restructuring. Safeway on Beretania is ANOTHER supermarket in desperate need of a management shake-up!!! Notoriously understaffed, long lines, Customer Service desks with NO customer service available...the complaints go on and on. I feel bad for the workers there, because so many of them are great with their customer service. It's the management that needs help!! Why can't you adequately staff your stores with cashiers?? Especially on high traffic days like $5 Fridays! Today was a nightmare waiting almost 20 mins in line because there were only 4 lines open. I came back after midnight, and generally like to shop in the wee morning hours because there are less customers. But tonight was a different story. Add to that, a very frustrated cashier who rang up a whole bunch of items only to return them all individually (instead of voiding the entire transaction), and mucking up the rest of whatever it was she hoping to fix. Mistakes happen. I'm fine with that. But what is your Plan B, Safeway? What should you do if there are obviously 8 people in one line which is going nowhere??? Ugh. I am so irritated that I HAVE to shop here for groceries because they are the only ones open 24 hours. I miss you, Foodland. I know we're in some pretty tough times and I even know what it's like to work in a grocery store during the holidays, but there is no excuse for the lack of items on shelves. I have lived in Kaneohe for three years. This is my local grocer and it is THE worst. Every time I come here, i spend twice the amount of time waiting in line to check out than I spent shopping. There are 10 checkout lines, yet only 1 or 2 are ever open at the same time. Invest in some self checkout lanes if you can't hire enough cashiers! It is maddening coming to the store. I have shopped at Safeway stores for most of my life, but the Kaneohe store is the worst I have experienced. The shelves are constantly empty of such things as dairy, flour and cereal. You can go through the checkout line without being acknowledged - not even a hello. I have made multiple attempts to purchase deli items, but the food looks old and not appetizing. A couple of weeks ago I ordered a sandwich and as they were making the sandwich the meat had a weird color and the vegetables wilted, so I cancelled my order. Today, I thought I'd try again since they have just remodeled, but they had no bread since the bakery didn't make any. While I continued my shopping, refrigerated items were on a cart to be put away and when I went by again about 20 minutes later, the cart was still sitting there with no employees around. I usually go to Don Quijote or Costco when shopping for food, etc. However, when I just want a few grocery items or sustenance from the deli I visit Safeway or Times. I would give this place five stars if not for one problem: Mr. Tim. First off, I have been here SEVERAL times to shop and I have never experienced any disgruntled employees except for Mr. Tim. I have only recently been ordering food at their deli and to my surprise, everything there is actually pretty delicious. The selection of food is quite impressive with different varieties of fresh salads, sandwiches, ambrosia, potato wedges, chicken wings, and the list goes on. However, there is one major concern, and it is CUSTOMER SERVICE. Sometimes it takes only one person to ruin the experience, and that is Mr. Tim. After waiting 10 minutes for Tim to arrive at the counter, he finally arrives looking very flustered. I then ask politely, "may I order something to go please?" And, instead of cordially acknowledging my request, he rolls his eyes and grumbles to himself in CLEAR view where everyone could see. He then continued to grumble to himself while looking around at the waiting customers the entire time while simultaneously constructing my sandwich. My buddy that was with me was aware of Mr. Tim's actions and was showing conspicuous disbelief. At first I thought it was almost surreal, then, he displayed the same attitude toward the two gentlemen after me. I left the store feeling unhappy and unappreciated. (This is my second time being serviced by Tim and both times were BAD experiences). Other than that, customer service from everyone else is great. The food selection and sales are decent. And, the interior and exterior designs are all quite visually appealing and clean. In addition, I do not have a customer service problem at the other Safeway deli locations which is reassuring. From now on, I will not patronage Kane'ohe Safeway's deli with the unpleasant service Mr. Tim apparently provides to his customers. read more

The store itself is large and the aisles have more width than other stores. If you're in the produce section and pass an employee they will almost always ask you if you need assistance. That doesn't happen in other parts of the store. The seafood department has been getting more varieties of poke. They have also started making poke bowls. Not as good as Foodland but not bad either. The deli department service is inconsistent. Sometimes it is acceptable, sometimes it's frustrating. Most times ordering a sandwich is routine. However there have been times when you have to wait a very long time just for someone to serve you. It's not that they don't see you. They make eye contact with you but continue on without acknowledging you with a "be right there". I've walked away from the deli many times simply because I've waited an unreasonable amount of time for service. Employees need to tend to customers promptly, not continue to hide/work in the back. The bakery has been disappointing on a few occasions. The first issue I have with them is that I ordered a cake at least a week in advance. The day I'm suppose to pick up my cake (like 3 hours before the pick up time) they call to say they can't make the cake because they don't have the ingredients. Hello? You're a grocery store, go down an aisle and get the ingredients! When I ask them how it's not possible, especially since they had a week to prepare for this order, they really can't give me a reason. They offer to make me a chocolate cake. My original order was a tres leche strawberry cake. Why would you substitute with a very different cake? Shouldn't you offer something similar? If I wanted chocolate, I would have ordered that from the beginning. I ask for something other than chocolate but I'm told they can only offer me chocolate. I tell them forget it. I then had to scrounge around for another cake in a couple of hours. My second bad experience with the bakery was that I ordered a cake and chose a design out of their cake book. I called in the order over the phone and got confirmation of the order. But when we went to pick it up, they had no record of my order therefore I had no cake. Luckily i make a habit of always asking for a name when I make phone calls so I could tell them exactly who took my order. They asked the girl and she remembered my order because of the design i requested. But there was still no cake. I ended up getting a generic cake from their display case because I needed a cake immediately. How do you lose an order?! My last complaint about the bakery is the service. I was looking at cakes in their display case, 2 employees are on the other side of the case. Neither offered assistance, I had to flag one down to ask a question. She came to the front to answer my question but instead of sticking around to see if I wanted to get the cake, she immediately went back in to tell the other girl that she was leaving to get a cart. Right after that the second girl leaves. Two customers standing at the display case and they both leave without acknowledging waiting customers. I approach the register to see if there's a bell or something to get someone's attention. That's when I see a hand written sign on the counter that the second girl had gone on break for 15 minutes, 2 workers choose to leave at the same time while the bakery area is full of customers. As I was about to go to customer service to get some help, the second girl came back. I had to ask her for her help me and she seemed irritated that I was bothering her. I looked for a name tag on the uniform but she didn't have a name tag. Her uniform top was a mess- wrinkled, not buttoned all the way, and disheveled looking. Unlike others stores that open up check stands when lines get too long , Safeway lines can go on forever. People end up blocking the aisle because there's no where for the line to go. If the location wasn't so convenient, I would probably stop going altogether. read more

In my household, Super Bowl ranks up with the major holidays in regard to spending a lot of money on food and beverages. My team wasn't playing , so I went to Safeway about 90 minutes before the start of Super Bowl. I was completely surprised at their sales! Ten pieces of chicken wings is regularly priced at $8.99. However, because of Super Bowl weekend, it was priced at $5.00! Everything in my wagon was priced at $5.00 each. Note to self: don't shop on an empty stomach and restrain yourself from going bonkers just because practically everything you're buying is on sale for $5.00 each. There was a lot of people shopping, but practically all the registers were open. So the wait in line was not long. The staff there were very friendly, helpful and efficient.
