I was sort of surprised by the Safeway. Grocery stores in Hawaii are notorious for being terrible. They usually have extremely high prices and very limited selection (Maybe it's just Foodland that does that). This one is 24/7 since the Foodland went out of business but still they try really hard. That's somewhat surprising because the staff is unionized so you wouldn't expect that they would be very helpful. i've been there on a daily basis for the last week and I have been satisfied each time. One small issue I guess is that literally every morning there is a line about five customers deep because the self-service is not opened. read more

Review for the Deli department only. I came to Safeway to pick up quick breakfast before heading up to the north side of the island. I waited at the counter without being acknowledged for several minutes and finally waived at one of the ladies staring at me, she came over and asked what we needed, we ordered the breakfast sandwiches (on menu) but she said they no longer make them, so we asked for the burritos with egg whites (again on menu) and showed me where the pre made ones were, she stated that they don't make them and we could choose from the pre made ones (no egg whites). Not sure why they have a menu w options if they don't take orders. Anyway I've been so several Safeway delis to know that's not how it works. There are other groceries in the area that have a delis so I'll be checking those out. read more

I am very disappointed as I made my purchase and realized I did not get shoyu from the Poke department for my sashimi and poke. I left my groceries with the guy by the the self check out and the deli is right next to check out and the sushi section. The sushi guy was busy making sushi so I asked the filipino lady if they have packet shoyu, salt and pepper and she said no more shoyu but she can give me salt and pepper so I told her I can get shoyu from the sushi guy and she said only if I buy sushi. I told her I bought poke stuff and she said I need to get the shoyu from them which is all the way in the back of the store. I told her never mind. I don't know why they would be stingy with shoyu packets! read more

Mainland vegetables and fruits: do they even know they are on a Hawaiian island? You can get fresh island papaya everywhere, but not Safeway, where they sell only green rocks that might ripen sometime in the next in the next several months but will be tasteless from having been picked too early. This place is great, exactly what we needed. We stayed in our timeshare and this store was right down the road. We bought rice and most of our meals from here. They have a great selection of food, lots of asian foods which is amazing. I'm glad there was a grocery store near by, because we eventually traveled north to stay and they didn't really have grocery stores. read more

I purchased a premade deli sandwich which i previously purchased and was very good, but this time the bread was very stale. The lettuce was also wilted. Really bad. It was a Boars head pastrami and Swiss on rye. This sandwich was $9.99 plus tax. It's not like I could just go back cause I live quite a few miles away, so I had to throw it in the trash. It was inedible. Also, I had a bad experience with a cashier who wasn't very nice to me, in fact she was outright rude, and embarrassed me in front of the customer behind me with her unnecessary comments. I just smiled at her and thanked her because I try my best to be kind, figuring she just probably had a bad day, as she was very annoyed with me. I want to say that other cashiers are usually very nice. I'll be on the lookout for this one next time and will avoid her. read more

Are all Safeway stores genetic clones of each other? The layout here looks pretty much identical to the Safeway back at home. Even the self-checkout machine gave me trouble like it does back at home. Consistent shopping experience indeed! For Kaua'i prices, we found prices at this Safeway to be more or less reasonable. But prices at the nearby Cost-U-Less were a bit lower overall. Safeway is the place to get groceries in Kapaa! Not only is everything a lot more reasonably priced, their poke is actually pretty decent. My wife and I ended up eating a few meals here - we just bought some poke (I tried the regular ahi poke and kimchee tako poke - both were tasty) from the seafood section, bought some rice by the pound, and got a bag of dried seaweed. A good way to eat good food for a good price. :) It's big, clean, and feels like a... well, Safeway. And they had some pretty good sales while we were there too. Saved us a good bit of money on food. read more

$4 and $5 bottles of decent wine can be found here, on sale from $9+ retail. Everything else is 40%+ more expensive than the Mainland, but that is to be expected. I live on Kauai, and have been a customer of Safeway Kapa'a for years. In the last 6 months to a year, the customer service has gone down significantly. I've noticed it the most at the deli counter and the self-checkout. The employees are downright rude. They don't willingly help and if you wave someone down, be prepared for negative attitudes. It's as if they do not want to be doing their jobs. The same goes for the associates who work at the self-checkout area. Negative attitudes are contagious in a work environment and I feel like this grocery store needs a course in customer service. Employees are much friendlier at Foodland, Times Market, and Costco. I suggest spending your money at one of those, where employees are actually nice. read more

This location has been going down hill for at least six years. It's dirty and the freezers are frquently broken. The freezer has clearly gone out multiple times in one aisle but the products haven't been replaced. Some items are out of stock for months for no discernible reason. The foodland next door and papayas are both nicer. The pharmacy is generally good and although their staff is overworked they are helpful and competent. read more

If you know what Safeways are generally like, this one isn't too different. There are some aisles marked with a "local products" indicator, which I thought was cool. Other than that, they have all your usual grocery items, including a lot of the fancier organic and special-diet specific things I was kind of surprised by. We stopped here to pick up some quick breakfast items and some first aid things. They had a decent selection, pricing seemed pretty on par with other grocery stores we'd visited in Kauai (and for most grocery things, maybe slightly higher than mainland prices, even in expensive cities, which is to be expected.) I would not recommend their bakery's donuts, but the danish I had was pretty decent. Self-checkout, checkout with a real person, and parking were all quick and easy. read more

Wonderful to see a full service Safeway on the island of Kauai! Walked into this beauty on a Wednesday afternoon, and I was so relived to see hot foods, deli, sushi and salad bar still open and full of choices! Ended up with some sushi, a small salad and a bottled Starbucks for a little over $15, not bad for Kauai. This location is brightly lit with all your grocery and household essentials. Alcohol, chilled beverages, fresh produce and meat are to name a few. They also sell flowers and leis in the front! Kauai has been plastic-bag free longer than the other islands, but I was surprised to see that paper bags are still offered without a cost. Safeway card members get some good deals depending on the week, and special prices just for your account. Super awesome! It was really nice to shop at a familiar store! Thanks Safeway! read more

No one seems to give good reviews of the big chains, so I'll go ahead and give one! Great prices and selection, this is a must stop for any out of towner renting a place with a kitchen. Very clean & great variety. As most things in Kauai- a bit pricey here, but conveniently located and it feels like you stepped back on the mainland. We got some donuts in the back bakery- the dough was not that good, but the frosting was delicious. Everything will seem like 1/3 higher cost of the mainland items (maybe even more). They always have things in stock and many different produce items to choose from. It is a great place to splurge a little while you are on the island because the quality is there. read more

Before checking into our vacation rental, we stocked up at Costco. However, there are always the supplemental supplies that need to be purchased. Well I work the closing shift of a bar and on my way home decided to pick up some food from Safeway being that they're open 24/7. So I go to pay and act very polite to the clerk And pay , as im putting my change away I hear her laugh because I was having issues with my wallet , then said (and you don't want a bag hah) under her breathe but I could clearly see her laughing. I think it's disrespectful for an employee to even think that's appropriate. i rang the bell for service 12 times before anyone even showed there face in the beginning of the transaction as well. It's the Safeway you know and love from the mainland, except the "deals" mean the expensive prices are instead just normal, which for Hawaii is cheap! A lot of people mention they prefer Foodland, which I like as well. But they have smaller aisles and the prices are only better if you have a member card, so it's basically a wash. Summary: GET THEIR POKE! It was seriously the best we had on the island... and trust us, we had lots. A typical Safeway in other aspects, clean & modern with almost everything you need at a moderate price to fulfill your one-stop-shop needs. When we decided we wanted poke for our first dinner in our condo, my mom said we HAD to go to Safeway. I thought she just wanted to be practical and load up on other supplies for the week (water bottles, breakfast, etc.) and just swoop up some nondescript fish while we were there. Little did I know that the fish counter at Safeway gave us the very best poke we consumed our entire trip. No joke! With our Safeway club card (or Vons club card, for you SoCal folk), we got most of our poke for $11/pound, much cheaper than anywhere else with decent poke. There was also a hefty variety of ahi (tuna) poke AND various other seafood critters, seaweed salad, and cucumber poke to boot! For ahi pokes, we selected wasabi, sesame and soy. For Dad and his love of mussels, we got a quarter pound of mussel poke. We didn't get nearly enough of the cucumber poke (really more like a cucumber kimchi). And I'm starting to regret that we didn't come back for MORE poke during our stay in Kauai. I'm happy to report that this Safeway is clean and relatively new, with the well-stocked wine selection we've all come to expect at most of their stores, along with their fresh bakery section. No, the produce isn't cheap, but where in Hawaii can you really find cheap onions and carrots anyhow? The pineapple WAS cheap and really, really good. We bought 3. We should've bought more. They have everything else that you expect. INCLUDING some really tasty local kimchi. As a family that has primarily subsisted on homemade kimchi delivered monthly from our grandmother, we were highly impressed. :) We checked out some of the other few markets on the island (so few, in fact, that my astute sister pointed out that there were fewer markets than golf courses in Kauai... ), but for the quality of poke [clearly, this is the most important factor for judging a market in Hawaii] and the well-stocked nature of Safeway's you-need-it, we-have-it mantra, this is really the place to go when you land in Lihue and want to stock up on supplies before heading to your vacation home base. Alternatively, Costco would be another great option if you have enough vacationers in your party to work your way through their bulk sizes. Seriously though, guys... give their poke a try. It is super fresh and far less (overly) salty than most other places with enough choices to find one you like. We came in Safeway looking for some items we couldn't find at Foodland. It's feels like your mainland grocery store except for super high prices. It was clean, pretty well organized and had a good selection. We stocked up on some basics for our condo. They had a good selection of fresh fruit, some of it cheaper than fruit stand prices. If you don't know how to tell if a papaya, pineapple, mango, etc is ripe, just ask. I had a kind employee show me what to look for and we ended up with some juicy papaya. Honestly, we preferred Foodland and even Big Save to Safeway. We just found better deals. But if this is closer to you it's not a bad option. read more

Safeway prices aren't that different from Foodland prices. They're both stores that you can find on the mainland, so if you're from the mainland then you kind of have an idea of what they sell. Basic grocery items and lots of spam. This Safeway was great because it was the only location near where we stayed that had a RedBox. So we came here and rented 3 DVD's to watch during the days that it rained really hard and we didn't have anything to do except stay home. read more

Working in customer service most of my life, I've learned to really appreciate it and it seriously does keep me coming back, as well as recommending to all of my friends. That said, the customer service at this particular location is always very random. The first few times I shopped, the cashiers were just nice enough. Sometimes I get this middle-aged woman that just hates her job there and if I ask her a question, god forbid, she gives me a long sigh and is quite condescending about it. Yes, I get it, I'm not a local and I am a younger person, but there is a certain common human decency that you should treat all people with, especially people that are being polite to you. You don't need to ruin everyone's day just because you have a rotten outlook on life. Besides all that, prices aren't TOO bad, as long as you are a member and are able to sometimes sacrifice your favorite brands. I will start going to Foodland the next time I need to do some grocery shopping. read more

It's an understatement when reviewers say the pricing at Safeway in Kauai is expensive. If you stop here on the way to the North Shore thinking you'll be saving a few dollars vs. going to the Princeville food land you'd be wrong. Not only will you pay more, but the selection for most items is worse and the traffic getting out of the parking lot around certain times can be horible. I'd say avoid this store if you can. We had to shop there Christmas day because it was the day we flew in and it was the only thing open. read more

this is the only safeway on the entire island of kauai (for now). they underwent a renovation a couple years back, and the store is very clean and well organized. whenever i come to safeway, i can always find what i'm looking for at a decent (island) price. also, the customer service is great. all the employees are helpful and every time i'm in here, at least one associate asks if i need help finding anything. the checkout lines can get a little long, especially during the late afternoon, but, they have a self-check out, which alleviates some of the wait. read more

Anyway, they are open 24/7 and will accept Vons cards if you have them. Otherwise it's your standard supermarket. No reason to think they would be much different than one in the mainland. Their poke bowls are insanely good. You can sample them before you buy. We had a club card so for under $7, we got enough poke and rice to eat for 2 people. Or if you're like us, we each got our own bowls and ate half and ate the other half for breakfast! read more

Store is clean tidy, and had everything we needed (like SPF 100 sunscreen and aloe for the terrible burn I got in Waikiki). Although it killed me to pay $4 a jar for spaghetti sauce I pay $1.50 a jar for in my own Safeway, I get that it's the price you pay to get everything shipped to an island ($10 bucks for a spaghetti dinner is still cheaper than $40 a person at half the island restaurants!). We bought enough food for breakfasts, a few lunches, and dinners for half of our stay (we'll dine out the other nights). Super convenient location, very friendly staff. read more
