The Foodland in Princeville on the island of Kauai is a busy place. Has a long line of people for the hot foods. The ribs were calling me but I needed to get to the airport. Has ample free parking in a cute little mall. There are self checkout machines in Princeville but not in the Foodlands I know on Oahu. I took a pic below. The store is clean and well stocked. So much unrealized potential at this Foodland location. They seriously have a captured audience here. The next supermarket is Safeway all the way in Kapa'a. Yeah, and I know there's a Big Save in Hanalei but that store is small. I would consider that a grocery store and not a supermarket. So many times I've been there and the one of the refrigerator units isn't working so they're empty. The floors are seriously dilapidated and missing chunks of vinyl. If the headquarters would only invest into this location it would be a place the community would shop for groceries exclusively. They do still have a decent array of poke and hot foods but it could be do much better. I hope one day they will. read more

This place can get so busy. But I'm so happy they still have one on Kauai. It's been over 10 years since we last visited the island and saw the one in Kapaa closed down. There are so many great things about Foodland. Poke is sooo good hut there are other hot and cold items to buy. Need last minute souvenirs? They have them here but I caution you they will be pricier. Overall a great place for cut fruit, snacks, drinks and food. Must stop if you're in the area. read more

Not sure how this store can continue to charge the highest prices for groceries in the United States and operate in such a dilapidated building. Coolers go out super frequently...floors are cracked and/or buckling (don't trip!)...and don't glance at the ceiling tiles which threaten to fall in. They are obviously not putting any money into maintaining this facility. And then you go to a Foodland Farms in Honolulu and the difference is glaring...everything is state of the art. There once was another Foodland on Kauai. The Kapaa location was allowed to slowly deteriorate (sound familiar?) and the locals simply drove to the next light and shopped at Safeway. Not a possibility in Princeville. If you need a real supermarket the only alternative is that same Safeway in Kapaa. On the plus side...they have good poke. If you trust their refrigeration! read more

For me, Foodland Hawaii means a large selection of freshly made Poke. So during our trip to the north shore of Kauai, we stopped into this location to explicitly get a variety for our lunch on the beach. It turned out great. Foodland is a Hawaiian original, founded in Honolulu on 1948 as Hawaii's first modern supermarket, and continues to be owned by the founder's family. It has 31 locations across the islands, but only one is still open in Kauai (the Lihue location closed during Covid). It's kinda hidden, so would need to explicitly look for it. It's a medium size supermarket. The poke station and hot deli are located together with the same associates manning both. It was busy and crowded around that area, so important to pull a number and wait. Once my number was called, got seven different items and the associate was patient. My wife doesn't like poke, so made herself a hot lunchbox for a good price (one Korean chicken drumstick at $2.50 each; cheddar cheese tots $2.79 for 0.31 lbs; one corn cob $1.29) while I made a deconstructed poke bowl ($3.38 for 2 scoops of white rice; chili garlic crunch ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs; Poke fresh ahi hawaiian style $11.56 for 0.34 lbs; california style ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs). My favorite was the California style, with the avocado. It reminds me of the taste of a California roll. Hate to admit it, but paying for almost triple the price for fresh ahi tuna isn't worth it...the from frozen was still great as a poke. read more

Dont get the hype at all. Foodland was really close to our VRBO so we stopped in for supplies...... wow.... It was very run down, out of many items, especially meat and crazy expensive. I would think that for how expensive everything is they could invest in modernizing the store. We ended up going to Safeway a few days later as we were headed to the other side of the island and were pleasantly surprised with a clean, fully stocked store. I came into Foodland last night for some cleaning supplies for our Airbnb. We didn't end up using some of the items and decided to return them this morning. Jocelyn came up to us and said she would help us. We returned a Lysol, air freshener and Pinesol. The pinesol has a leak on the lid and had leaked all over our bag. Jocelyn questioned whether we had used it and we told her there was a leak on the bottle. She said where and she tipped the bottle up and down. She had pinesol on her hand and we offered to bring our bag in if needed. She didn't accept the Lysol. We did thank her for helping us and she just handed us the receipt. Nice grocery store with a good selection. It gets crowded at lunchtime, especially at the deli, and again around 4pm, with long register lines. The aisles are fairly tight, so navigating around people gets a bit challenging during busy times. Staff were nice and helpful whenever we interacted with them. The poke was delicious and super affordable at less than $10 for a bowl. I think the key is that you need to ask for a sample to find your favorite poke flavor. We found that the spicy tuna was softer and more delicious than the salmon pokes. I can see how people would rate the poke less than 5 stars if you purchase a flavor that you end up not being a fan of. We also loved the crispy chicken thighs from the hot food section. Surprisingly the poke and crispy chicken from Foodland ended up being one of my favorite meals in Kauai!! read more

Great poke at a good price, fresh and easy to get. The grocery store also has excellent spam musubi at the hot bar for cheap. The coffee is solid and the staff are wonderful. The only drawbacks are the lines. Make sure to take a number at the deli counter, otherwise you will wait with no sense of where you stand. Checkout can take a while as well, since this is a small store that sees a lot of visitors. But everyone is very friendly and the food is worth it. read more

Came here for the poke and while it was good and affordable, the wait was not worth it. It took them 30 minutes to get through 3 people in line because they were fussing with Sticker paper from the deli section that wasn't working. There was a long line of people waiting and many got fed up and left. They seemed unaware that people were waiting or just did not care. Typical grocery store vibes elsewhere though. read more

Okay, I understand we're on an island and all, but I can't be the only one who thinks the prices here are ridiculous, right? Especially when the fruits and veggies don't look 100% fresh. Most of the grocery stores are a drive away, so it seems to me that Foodland takes advantage of being close. If I stayed here longterm, I would prefer making the drive to the southside of the island to guarantee better quality of food than what I could see here. Didn't try the poke as it didn't look impressive to me and I had no idea how long it's been sitting there so I didn't want to chance it. Staff wasn't the nicest and I got looks of annoyance when I would talk to them. On the bright side, even though it cost me over $20 (which is insane for the size), I found the cutest little insulated bottle for my niece. read more

I love Foodland. The service can't be beat and the food quality is wonderful. When I'm in Maui, Oahu, or Kauai I have the greatest quality meat and fish and their on sale items can't be beat. They just remodeled when I was there and the place looked great. The fresh flowers are something to behold. Be polite and not bossy. The Hawaiians shop there so you might be fortunate enough to see a dozen or so during your stay. Church polite should make it a wonderful time. Never ever been to a Foodland before, but this is the only one in Kauai. So off we went! It's a really large store, but I was happy to see so much variety! The hot bar was great, and the cold bar was irresistible, of course! Poke is pretty much irresistible to me in general. We picked up a variety of poke over the course of the few days. Ahi, salmon, scallop, and mussels! So many kinds to choose from, and we probably tried half of them. I also got a somen salad and an egg salad sandwich. Yum! Not stellar, but for a grocery store, this stuff hit the spot! Oh, and we also got some musubis! Great choices here that I never would have expected from a local store such as this. Reminds me of a sort of Whole Foods, but more local and more justifiable to shop at, hahaha. Also, the reusable bags and insulated totes are to die for. Go get some for home. read more

Whenever we're in Hawaii we will make a stop(s) at Foodland. Usually for their poke bowls, sushi, sashimi, and prepared foods. Staying in Princeville where there are many resorts, many people will grab groceries here. Driving up from LIH in our rental car this was our second stop before checking in at our resort the first day of a weeklong stay. We headed straight to the poke bar. Took a number. Looked at the poke and the popular poke was down to a spoonful. Our number was called. The three of us all got the Hawaiian ahi poke bowl. Not my favorite but....Also bought three musubis - two spam and one chicken. The spam musubi was $2.69 each and the chicken was $3 something. Highway robbery as they were tiny. The next day we went again around 5:30pm to grab dinner. Hubby got a poke bowl, I got the inari bombs, and daughter got the sushi combo. So many people had the same idea. The checkout lines were crowded. My inari bombs were disappointing. I couldn't distinguish what each topping was. And the sushi rice lacked umami. Unlike the Foodland in Maui and Oahu, their prepared foods are all deep fried selections. And on Aloha Friday, where certain foods are just $6, we passed. Nothing grabbed me. We stopped coming to Foodland the remainder of our trip. Foodland is a supermarket but we did our primary shopping at Costco before we drove up to Princeville. read more

They have everything you need from food to toiletries to souvenirs! We got their poke and salt and vinegar chicken wings! I wished I got more because that hit the spot , I was hesitant at first but the vinegar flavor was just right n not too over powering. Also found the beef chips that my sister asked for. The lady at the self checkout told us to put our phone number in for discount and was told to still do it even though we don't have the membership which knocked down $6 off the total. The whole place smells like mold and dead rats. There is a package of salami hanging in the deli section right next to the counter that is completely moldy and clearly has been for days. When the deli counter employee was told about it he responded "yeah the guy is coming on Wednesday" it is Saturday and there is moldy meat on your shelf..... so you are just going to let it sit there? We were so excited to come across Foodland in Kauai. Perfect for grocery shopping when you visit the island. Luckily, it was located right near our resort in Princeville. When we needed something, it was convenience for us to hop in the car and go especially on a rainy day. Prices were a bit over the top, but when visiting Hawaii it's expected to pay a large amount of money for groceries. Service was wonderful! Everyone was so kind and treated you with respect. The reason why we love Foodland so much. Don't forget to sign up for their reward program, a great way to get discounts in the future. Conveniently located for us since we are staying in Princeville. Foodland is a bit spendy but we like specific items such as chicken skin and the variety of poke. This Foodland is located in north shore and was the perfect stop on our way home back to kapa. We were in desperate need of a good poke place after a long day exploring north shore. Our friend recommended this place to us since there were many locations on the main island. I didn't know what to expect after walking into the place but all I can say was it was spectacular. They serve so many variations of cold and hot food! It's also a big grocery store where you can shop for ingredients or even do a little souvenir shopping. They have a huge selection of poke and was so pleased with the price. for our bowl, we each paid $13, $17, or $24. It all depends on the type of fish you get, fresh or not. But it's def such a good amount for the price you pay, we couldn't even finish our bowls! You do need to grab a number and then once it's your turn they will shout out the number. You choose what you want and you checkout with your groceries if you have any. We love coming to this foodland, super conveniently located if you're staying in the north side. They have everything you'll need but note that their poke and ready to eats are really where it's at! There's a good variety of poke, some of it does sell out later in the day on the weekends. Plenty of parking and outdoor dining tables with umbrellas.
