    Poke bowl prices

For me, Foodland Hawaii means a large selection of freshly made Poke. So during our trip to the north shore of Kauai, we stopped into this location to explicitly get a variety for our lunch on the beach. It turned out great. Foodland is a Hawaiian original, founded in Honolulu on 1948 as Hawaii's first modern supermarket, and continues to be owned by the founder's family. It has 31 locations across the islands, but only one is still open in Kauai (the Lihue location closed during Covid). It's kinda hidden, so would need to explicitly look for it. It's a medium size supermarket. The poke station and hot deli are located together with the same associates manning both. It was busy and crowded around that area, so important to pull a number and wait. Once my number was called, got seven different items and the associate was patient. My wife doesn't like poke, so made herself a hot lunchbox for a good price (one Korean chicken drumstick at $2.50 each; cheddar cheese tots $2.79 for 0.31 lbs; one corn cob $1.29) while I made a deconstructed poke bowl ($3.38 for 2 scoops of white rice; chili garlic crunch ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs; Poke fresh ahi hawaiian style $11.56 for 0.34 lbs; california style ahi $4.80 for 0.30 lbs). My favorite was the California style, with the avocado. It reminds me of the taste of a California roll. Hate to admit it, but paying for almost triple the price for fresh ahi tuna isn't worth it...the from frozen was still great as a poke.

    Self check out vibes.

Greatest store on earth! Staff is the best, hidden gems everywhere and anything can happen here!

Fresh poke here that's soo good. Recently visited the island and came here in the morning for poke and it did not disappoint. Fresh colorful array of fresh poke!! We got a carton of pog also that was delicious. Great market to shop and close to our hotel.

Okay, I understand we're on an island and all, but I can't be the only one who thinks the prices here are ridiculous, right? Especially when the fruits and veggies don't look 100% fresh. Most of the grocery stores are a drive away, so it seems to me that Foodland takes advantage of being close. If I stayed here longterm, I would prefer making the drive to the southside of the island to guarantee better quality of food than what I could see here. Didn't try the poke as it didn't look impressive to me and I had no idea how long it's been sitting there so I didn't want to chance it. Staff wasn't the nicest and I got looks of annoyance when I would talk to them. On the bright side, even though it cost me over $20 (which is insane for the size), I found the cutest little insulated bottle for my niece.

5 stars for Foodland. We love this grocery store - it truly has it all. Fun aisles to explore and perfect for beach-day essentials. The staff is always helpful. A must-stop. Steps to a perfect beach day: 1: Grab a cooler bag and some ice 2: Pick out fun lunch, snack, and drink options 3: Pack it up and head to your favorite beach spot You're set for the perfect day plus now you have a cute, affordable souvenir to remember it by.

The spam musubi spam slice was a little thin on the Aloha spirit. Must be a corporate thing. Gotta get the ratio right if you gonna be serving these in Kauai. Still good though.

Poke here is the worst I've ever had at foodland. Maybe it was an off day, but I have never been disappointed like I was here. Locations on Big Island, Maui and Oahu always scratch the poke itch. This one wasn't great. Flavor and texture were mediocre. Was a little too salty.

This location offered a wide variety of food options, including ready-made meals, hot foods, deli selections, and more, making it a convenient stop for quick bites or grocery shopping. What stood out most was the handcrafted sushi selection from Zenshi. There was an impressive variety of rolls to choose from, including California Rolls, Spicy California Rolls, Crunchy Rolls, Rainbow Rolls, Crunchy Shrimp Tempura Rolls, and Seaside Combos. They also offered additional items like Summer Rolls, Big Wave Poke Bowls, Spam Norimaki, and Calamari Salad, which added to the overall selection. I decided to try two Rainbow Rolls. The quality of the sushi was decent; not bad, but not particularly outstanding either. The taste was tolerable enough, especially considering the fairly reasonable price point. Overall, Safeway provides standard food offerings for customers and gets the job done. Clean grocery store and well-stocked along with plenty of parking and friendly associates.

Still it is obviously the best place to get the most for your buck. Our location has some distinct qualities that you may want to know before you go. 1) this is a local gathering place, if your expecting a Costco-RAT-Race, like the mainland, think again. People often stop to give hugs and aloha to friends they see, staying to chat in inconvenient areas to tourist (I am totally guilty of this, and I love seeing my friends, students and their families- you just got to send them your "ALOHA") This may be annoying to some people, but it is a way of life here- so just be happy to have a little slice of aloha. 2) they don't always have stock- Tuesdays are a great day to go. Lastly, 3) checking out. If you choose to self-check out... you may be confused. As it stands now, and for a really long time, there is one line to stand in for 3 lanes of check out. Is it logical: no. Does it confuse visitors and even people like me: yes. For some reason, Costco wants all self-checkout folks to stand in one line and then go calmly and orderly to whichever of the 3 checkout lane openings is free. This really confuses visitors, and sometimes even leaves them with stink eye or scoldings from the locals. After all, those who live on Kauai have been trained to the 1 line system. About 1/2 the time, there is a staff that alerts the next person to go to the available self-check out, but where they are not there, or need to assist someone with self-checkout or review and ID for alcohol: they are not there. I am really not sure why they have kept this single line system, rather than having 3 lines, but I guess there must be some reason for this. Does anyone know? 4) Please be kind to the staff, offer some aloha to them- Q, Carry and Deb are some of my favorite folks. Costco always tolerates me coming in costume as Darth Vadar and Princess Leia. This Costco is part of the aloha experience- please treat it with love. ***** If you are an executive member- this Costco is opening earlier for you! Make sure you check the times, this Saturday they opened at 8:45am and weekdays they open at 9am for the Executive Members. Enjoy and alooooha!

With the beautiful weather and easy parking, the setting was perfect for a great time. But found out that it wasn't worth the 50 minute drive by itself, though there are plenty of places to visit on the north shore around that area...still worth the trip. We arrived a bit earlier than the 09:00 start time, so parked near the Hanalei Pier, and walked across the sand of the beach to enjoy the morning before arriving at the market. The market was fairly hopping by 09:30, with 30 different stalls selling their wares. My goal was to find two things to munch on first, as we walked the market: some sliced white pineapple and malasadas. It's clear that for food items, the market does an effective job of making sure a type of a food item is sold by only one vendor at the market...it really inflates the price. White pineapple is a lot less hardier for transport, thus hard to find on the mainland...but definitely a far superior pineapple in terms of sweetness and juiciness. The vendor that sold it here, presented it in slivers inside the typical cored pineapple container. I saw it right away, but noticed that there was no price....it ended up being $20 (I was committed at that point), which is pretty steep for maybe 1/4 of a pineapple. I found the malasada vendor, making it fresh on-site. We only wanted to taste, so got one for $3 non-filled...and it was disappointing...just OK. Should have tasted a lot better considering where we were. We circled the market multiple times, and ended up staying for about an hour. It's a market geared towards tourists like me, not locals: you are not going to find a local restauranteur looking for produce for his/her dinner menu here. Speaking of being a tourist: did end up buying a nice print of nearby Anini beach that we will frame at our home to remind us of Kauai...the artist was super grateful. The picture itself gave me a mission to find that view at Anini (as we were heading there next).
