This place is a f**cking disaster. They are chronically understaffed and their staff are either undertrained or apathethic. They often run out of sale items and don't restock the shelf. Sandwich bread appears to be days old and you're lucky if you order a specialty sandwich and get the specialty bread it is supposed to come with. Location gets it 2 stars. read more

This place is absolutely packed for holidays. I highly advise everyone to grab what they need before coming to town. I would've given this place only one star except our cash register, Brian, was amazing. While everyone else was stuck in slow lines because the cashiers were talking to people way too long, or just being slow for no reason, our things were in bags in no time at all. PROS: + Only grocery store within 20 minutes (not sure if this is actually a pro) + Decent selection of quality meats, cheeses and baked goods. + Vitamin Water is, strangely, always on sale here. I mean ALWAYS. Love it. CONS: - Tremendously overpriced on a LOT of products, thankfully I live in Carson right near Walmart. :P - The make-shift deli restaurant front thing is bad (see below). - You MUST have one of their card/accounts to get any kind of reasonable savings. - The starbucks inside is not of the same caliber as stand alone units. Look, it's a grocery store. You know what to expect on that end of things. My biggest problem here is the Deli. The pricing of the food is actually not bad there, a meal is a little cheaper than most of the restaurants in the area, and you get a good amount of food. The big issue is their food handling practices - I went here once, and I will not go back, no question, no response, no comment, no personal delivery of a cute puppy could convince me that this place deserves a second chance. I wanted a sandwich one day, and so I thought I'd give them a shot, as I'd been told they have some items in the deli that subway doesn't and the price isn't bad. As promised, there were some nicely priced and different items like a chipotle bacon turkey sandwich on a panini-pressed roll, etc. Sounds great! But, then it isn't. The person that was making sandwiches pulled the bread out and went to set it on the counter, dropped it on the floor, immediately picked it up and set it right back on the counter and went about making my sandwich. At this point, I had two emotions going on, one of complete shock and anger, and the other of "I wonder just how bad this could get." So, I let the more curious side take over and I didn't say anything... I wanted to see just where this would go. Slapped on meat and cheese, undercooked bacon and a chipotle sauce that was so watered down that it actually made the bread turn to mush... let's just say the floor was not the worst part of the sandwich. I got about 4 bites in (yeah, I actually wanted to give it a legit try even after the floor goodies were on there) and had to just throw it away. The starbucks... well... they try. Nice employees, clean enough operation, I just get the sense that they don't have any urgency and less knowledge of the products than the place over in Incline. One of the nicest safeway's I've ever been too. Really top notch grocery store. Perfect for grabbing a weekends worth of food while enjoying yourself in Tahoe. If you are a local, avoid this place Friday-Sunday morning as it is crazy. Other than the crowds, I love coming here. read more

This is the ABSOLUTE WORST SAFEWAY EVERRR! After arriving to town late (June. 23, 2017) a few friends and I stopped here to stock up on the way to our Airbnb (after driving 3hrs from the east bay). As we were searching for items we heard loud thuds when we rounded a corner a box sailed past us landing directly on the floor in front of us. The employee un-phased with both earbuds in continued. When I went down an isle one of the boxes landed just inches from me. Although the employee locked eyes with us he kept the earbuds in and kept chucking. When trying to shop by the meats there were boxes everywhere, stacked dangerously high. In order to retrieve meat we had to contort our own bodies. When we reached the checkout my friend paid ahead of me, the cashier didn't honor her Safeway rewards card. When my friend asked why no discounts were applied she said my friend could come back the following day, or get back in (the one open long) line and wait again. When the cashier began ringing me up she began slamming my bottles into the bag as though she was angry with me. She did not speak only angrily bagged my groceries. When we exited the store the person cleaning the parking lot blew the leaves he was blowing directly at us! To top it off after spending over $100 I went home to find the apple sauce I'd purchased was over A MONTH OLD! This Safeway and its employees are despicable! I have always known Safeway to have the best customer service and hi quality products but this experience has me looking at Safeway in a whole new light. NEVER AGAIN for Kings Beach Safeway and I'd think twice if I were you before spending my time and money there! read more

Never thought I would do a review of a grocery store, but this Safeway is truly awful. As others noted, they are constantly understaffed and with only 2 checkers the lines are brutal. No effort made for good customer service. Accidentally messed up one digit of my club card number, told the cashier, and she said I could change it at the end. I had a $3 off $30 just 4 u coupon. At the end of ringing us up, she said she couldn't change club card since that other one had registered. I asked whether I could show her the coupon and she said she wouldn't honor it. read more

I have lived in the area for 15 years, and for 15 years I have complained about how short staffed this store always is. It is great to come in on a Sunday Evening (5pm) and wait in line for 20 minutes because they have 1 or 2 checkers for everybody. The best is coming into a 24 hour store after midnight, and trying to find a checker to help you check out. yes I said find a checker or any employee who can help........ Ridiculous management. Friday at 7pm only 2 lanes open 10-15 people in each line, no urgency to open another lane. Obviously the management knows they are the only store around so they don't care to schedule enough checkers for the business. 20 minutes in line. Awesome! I live half the year in San Francisco and half the year in Kings Beach. This store has no equal! It's very up-scale, clean, with a very helpful staff! The Safeway Pharmacy is terrible. The pharmacist showed up late for work on Saturday. He had absolutely positively no ability to enter insurance or physician information. And we soon learned that there was a good reason for this---from his point of view. Because he claimed to be unable to enter the University of California insurance information into the computer, he was then able to charge us an expensive rate for our antibiotic (the rate for uninsured patients). This was shameful. He took no responsibility for his inability to use a computer. He should have simply admitted his inability to use a computer, apologized, and dispensed the antibiotic to us at the rate for insured patients. read more

What a joke!! This store is an embarrassment to the community, and should not be allowed to operate. Safeway has proceeded to remove another product that I've been purchasing for a while, only to satisfy the selfish salaries of the corporate thugs up top. This store is so understaffed in the busy season, and by no means prepared for crowds. The space between the checkout and product isle's has about enough room for 4 people maximum(unbelievable)!!!! The corporate mangers up top should be replaced with actual human beings that respect real life, and not dollar signs! I will shop at Railey's as much as I can!! I will say however, the staff at this store in Kings Beach are the most wonderful people, and are very helpful, and I look forward to seeing them on a regular basis. The Safeway Pharmacy at this location (Kings Beach) is a lifesaver. I forgot my pain meds and needed them filled on the spot. I only needed a three day supply. The manager, Don, charged me a very nominal amount ($10) and could not have been more responsive or helpful. He is a walking advertisement for Safeway and a symbol of good service. (And good marketing as I spent a *lot* of money on vitamins as I needed them as well and the sale prices were quite competitive). On top of all this, the store was operating under a partial electric blackout. Five stars well deserved. read more
