Very busy very popular for good reason from the wine and beer and alcohol to the organic produce, mini drugstore, bakery....They have it all. We hear this one is more well stocked than the one closer to the freeway in Truckee but I think that might be the only thing going for it. Not being from the area we might be spoiled when it comes to expectations in the meat and fish section and the prepared food was nothing special either. If you can avoid this grocery store, do so at all costs; you'll spare yourself wasted time and frustration. The #1 problem with this Safeway is its exploitation of workers. The store is chronically understaffed, and the management's desire to usurp as much labor as possible from its employees is ethically repulsive. You'll notice this structural phenomenon through its effects: only one or two checkers working at a time, including during peak tourist hours; waiting in lines that wrap around aisles; the food selection looks like it's been ravaged post-apocalypse. Don't blame those at the register...I've been coming here for years and the workers are always overworked. Went into this Safeway at around 445 for a few things for dinner. There was only one regular line open and one quick check line open. The lines to get through the checkout were insane! There were at least 10 people in the quick check line and even more in the regular line. I stayed in the same spot for about 15 minutes before moving one guest forward. They finally opened 2 more lines and they went a little quicker. I know it is slow time of year but only having 2 checkout lines opened when the store is that packed and right before dinner when the store is always busy! read more

I trekked through the mountains in the dead of a winter's night to come to this Safeway! Translation: I drove on a roadway to get here, it was like 35 degrees in October. My partner-in-crime and I have an affinity for late-night grocery store visits. Enter: this 24-hour Safeway. Well, actually at first there was no entrance to be had, as a sign informed us "Closed 2:45-4am due to staff shortage." At the time of our visit it was 4:15, but the doors were still locked. Eventually we got in, and thus began what would be an hour-long venture into the twilight zone of grocery store experiences. Never have I wanted to possess the powers of telekinesis as much as I did that night. The object of my affection? The syrup in aisle 8, an aisle which was cordoned off to be cleaned along with several other main aisles in the store. After waiting for the floor to dry (which is like waiting for paint to dry but with floor wax), I finally got syrup! And then proceeded to wait 15 minutes at the checkout stand for someone to ring us up, cause why would anyone want us to leave? This Safeway is like Hotel California, or the Matrix. So, what's the moral? When someone tells you to avoid this Safeway after midnight, Listen. And when your beloved wants to make pancakes for you, plan ahead and bring your own syrup! read more

I come here when I'm tired of using my local Raley's in Incline and just want to see what's over the border in California. This is a nice, large, modern store with the added convenience of having a built-in Starbucks inside. Pricing, as for most Tahoe establishments, will be a tad bit higher than if you are on down the hill, but that's what you get if you live in a resort area as well. They have a very good bakery section and a nice selection of grab and go lunches if you need to get something for a beach picnic. read more

I dunno whats with the low reviews here, I had a perfectly good time, as much as you can have at a Safeway anyways. The store is clean and it's pretty big with lots of specialty departments, like the bakery, meat department, deli with made to order sandwiches. I had a hankerin for some bagels in the morning as I was staying over night just up the street, so I come in a 6am and fresh bagels are out for 79 cents each, got me come strawberry cream cheese and I'm all set to head back to our lodge for a little coffee and bagel sitting out on the deck in the morning. Perhaps we are at fault; perhaps we should not frequent this Safeway location after a Holiday ski weekend, late afternoon. Our experience was as follows: 1. Empty shelfs of major items: milk, juices, vegetables, bread (just to mention four items). 2. No staff personnel restocking any of the patrons or answering any questions as to restocking or similar items. WTF. TAHOE CITY does a much better job! My mistake for not venturing into the other location. 3. Inconsiderate out-of-towners (not the fault of the store). No consideration to moving-along or stop-standing for many minutes in front of produce or deli areas. Thanks - you turkeys! 4. Register staff lacked smiles and more typical Safeway standards. Run by the NICEST staff I have ever encountered in a Safeway, the Kings Beach Safeway is a must stop for us when we're staying in the area. Well organized and stocked up despite the fact that the place has a constant flow of humanity in and out of it. Allow for some time when you go, this place can get busy ---- like on Friday nights when folks are just arriving for a ski weekend. This Safeway location is a copycat of most Safeway establishments; just as how most major corporate and/or franchised retailers. Keeping the familiarity of the layout for their loyal shoppers, like me. This location is conveniently right off the main road and usually open late night. They have a Starbucks inside the store just as you enter from the left side and you can use your Starbucks app to pay for your drinks! Maria was very patient with me despite my 5-person drink order. They made our drinks just right and within a reasonable amount of time. As for the prices of the items at this Safeway, they are a little higher than what most locations offer. So, you might want to have a shopping list to help stick with a budget. Checkout is about average for Safeway because is depends on what time of day you decide to shop here. Nothing particularly special about this safeway but it is great for late night or early grocery run. When I hear "Safeway," I usually think about cheap beer, crappy produce, questionable meats and A LOT of junk food. I suppose if you drink enough of their cheap beer, you can shop happily at most Safeways, but one can only handle so much Mickeys and Steel Reserve! The "get 'em drunk and serve 'em junk" model must work out for them in a lot of areas, but this Safeway is different. They actually have a pretty good supermarket in Kings Beach. I do not understand the mentality of the store manager. Perhaps he/she thinks all store customers are tourists and will never return. Unfortunately, this is the only grocery store in town for the residents of the area. They have to shop here frequently. We have family in Kings Beach so we are in this Safeway about once a month. There are three good employees. Thanks to them! The rest of these people have no interest in working or any interest in their customers. It takes forever to buy anything at the deli or bakery. We have to bag our own groceries. And two cash register clerks are rude and obnoxious. Parking is excellent. read more

Safeway in Kings Beach does not enforce wearing masks. Dozens of people walk in not wearing masks and they say nothing. We went in last weekend, and while most good citizens were wearing masks, many were not. One guy said to a Safeway employee "The fascists in Sacramento can't tell me what to do", and he did nothing. Never Enough Checkers! Safeway NEVER has enough checkers. Even with 75 people standing in line at 10 AM they have 3 checkers working and 6 lanes idle! When I asked if they had more checkers, they said no - and then told me to go to the office to complain. This is no way to treat customers! I've seen this in other Safeway stores.
