This is a great little Safeway EXCEPT that the ambient inside temperature is held at 33 degrees, and there are a number of senior living centers nearby, but seniors won't shop here if they can avoid it. This is that weird Safeway that is seen near Stanford university. I only came to this Safeway once and it's pretty interested for a university supermarket. It's a lot smaller than the Safeways in my county which are very big food centers. I have gotten some things that I don't usually see in my local Safeway which is a huge win here. This place also closes very late which is good because I often find myself driving home from SF or other parts of San Mateo County without any snack or drinks. I loved the snacks they have here, it's really worth the trip. The location of this shopping center is pretty cool too. Drawback: This building is rather dated maybe like 1970-80s or something so please don't let it hold you back. I would not come here unless I really have to. read more

I have been going to this store for years. They push customers to use self checkout. I have visited a few times without a wallet and tried to use Apple Pay. I go through the checkout process and finish and then the system craps out. The attendant says that the machines don't work with Chase or Wells Fargo. He can't even process it at his station. WTF? They have known about this issue for months. Twice I have wasted 30 minutes each and then left a basket and walked out of the store. Poor management, crappy technology. No one gives a s**t. Go to Trader Joe's instead of this poorly run backwater of a store. read more

I stopped going to this store because I don't like the self checkout and there's often just one checker. Had a couple of good delivery experiences but the past *three* deliveries have missed multiple items -- and there's been some moldy produce in the bags that have been delivered. You can get a refund but it's super-annoying not to get the items they say are on the way. No more deliveries for me! read more

After nearly 20 years of supporting this store, I walked out today knowing that I would never return. My weekly purchases have ranged from $100 to $500. Over the years, I have helped the checkers to bag my groceries when a bagger wasn't nearby. It was a small act/price to pay for having a clean, friendly well-stocked neighborhood store. Over the past year or so, I've bagged more and more of my own groceries weekly alongside the checker; baggers seem to now be a rarity in this store. I always have too many items for self-check; today I had 43. The checker today kept his focus on ringing up my purchases totaling $269.00 and pushing my items toward me to bag. The produce was crushed and some strawberries spilled out from their plastic carton that was forced open. The checker was oblivious. I was having trouble opening the plastic bags because my arthritis flared up in one of my hands. I politely asked him if a bagger was available because I needed help. He mumbled something and kept on checking. He used his left arm to shove more items toward me including an 8-pack of canned soda, a 6-pack of bottled soda and a 6-pack of canned beer. These items were pushed into my remaining groceries, crushing my bread and rice cakes. Then, he removed the plastic divider from the belt and started talking to the next customer and ringing up her items. I had already paid, so I was left to load the beverages and remaining groceries into my cart. I asked to speak to a manager. The checker ignored me but the checker at the next register pointed to a woman nearby. I approached her and related my experience. She had no reaction or response. I told her I would never return to her store. This store is where customer service comes to die. read more

Stopped here to use their restroom and buy snacks on a long drive. Very happy with their selection of sourdough bread. Bought a loaf and my family LOVED it! Store was tidy, well lit and well stocked. Good variety of all your standard groceries, pantry foods, produce, breads, and baking stuff. I was here late at night and there was no wait in line. Parking lot is good sized and easy to navigate. This is a small Safety next to Stanford on Sand Hill. Used to pass it by all the time but now come by once every few weeks. There's less selection of things and higher chance of inventory stockouts, but there's plenty of parking and it's in a convenient center with lots of other stores like CVS, Starbucks, frozen yogurt, etc. read more

The checkers here make me sad. Over the past few years I've gotten way more incompetence and just plain attitude from the checkers at Sharon Heights than at any other Safeway. Two checkers decided right off the bat they didn't like me and were pointedly hostile even before I opened my mouth--it was the sort of deliberate rudeness I usually get only at a Goodwill drop-off point. I watched one of them bully her bagger. Another checker charged me for organic produce instead of the non-organic I'd bought, and when I pointed this out he told me brusquely to "be more careful when you shop". Huh? I complained and got a call from a guy I'd seen around the store, not the manager and not paying attention until I said the checker would make a great mall cop. Yes sir, your comments and concerns go straight to the top! Another checker missed a discount sticker, then got irritated with me because I hadn't alerted him that the item was discounted. You could write a paper just on this guy alone. None of these people lasted long, but when this kind of customer abuse keeps happening, at this Safeway and only this Safeway, it's hard to believe it's a fluke. I've shopped here regularly since the late '80s, back when it was a normal Safeway. You saw the same crew every day, and they were career employees who took their job seriously and gave decent and sometimes great customer service. Then, at some point maybe ten years ago, it changed. I figured it was the economy--people checking at Safeway as a second or third gig, no attachment to their job or Safeway or the customers, unhappy here for a few months and then gone. But it's beginning to dawn on me that there might be another explanation: they're checker trainees from non-profits that offer employees to Safeway at no salary--the non-profit pays the salary so its client can enter, or re-enter, the workforce at minimal cost to the employer. Earn while you learn basic job skills and work on the quirks that might make you unemployable in any other setting: that's the vibe I'm getting. It explains the defensiveness and lack of customer service skills. It also explains the extreme youth of some of the checkers, and the hellacious turnover in checkers compared to other Safeways. It's a wonderful program for Safeway and for any trainee who learns how to keep a job, but I'm not sure what's in it for those of us getting randomly snarled at. Warm fuzzies? Free ice cream? A charitable tax deduction? Not feeling it. Or maybe this is what Safeway gets when it advertises for checker trainees, and you the Sharon Heights Safeway shopper help HR weed out the ones with no future in customer service. Seems like we should at least get the employee discount. Why use the Sharon Heights Safeway for training? Probably for the same reasons Safeway tests its new managers here, as an employee told me years ago. It's a small store, and many of the regulars are older. They'll shop here forever because they've shopped here forever. I've often wondered why they keep a site that's so invisible (the "secret Safeway") and small. Maybe now I know. BTW these comments don't apply to the baggers here, most of whom are developmentally disabled and were (I'm guessing) also placed by non-profits. One was a friend for many years until his family moved away, and I've developed some rapport with a couple of other long-termers. No, it's just the new checkers that weird me out. Sure, it's for a good cause (and bigger profits). No, it doesn't happen every day, or even every month. But it happens often enough to make me feel uncomfortable shopping here. And what a comment on customer service these days: they've run Miss Safeway's Finishing School for Checkers right under my nose for at least a decade and I just now figured it out. read more

My favorite Safeway in Silicon Valley because it's old school. This is a smaller, "outdated" Safeway...and I love it. It's just the right size. Feels comfortable. No loud music, no bright lights, no towers of stuff that I don't need. Just a safe, friendly place to buy food. Cashiers are warm and kind, usually quick to chat briefly. Everyone is courteous. I don't use Safeway self-checkout because the machines don't have a "mute volume" button and it's too noisy for me and my family...I also don't want to support that kind of automation. If the store is out of a product, staff can explain why -- usually a supply chain thing -- and tell me when they expect to have it back in stock. There's a real butcher, a magazine/book section, a floral section, and a small bakery. Large wine section! :-) Produce is fresh. Good selection of expected American products and some fun finds. My only complaint is that some products seem really expensive. $8 for granola bars? $6 for shredded coconut? That said, Safeway offers some good deals, especially with the app and digital coupons. Smaller selection than the gigantic box on Middle and ECR....and that's just fine. read more

Pro - size-wise meets convenience; ideal for local Sand Hillians; Stanford students; people bringing gifts to patients at the hospital; and for going enroute to Highway 280; friendly sushi chef and some employees. Let's Talk How to Improve the store: a) Switch the Bakery corner with the Balloons and Gifts Corner. The gifts corner feels like an entirely different store. More than once I have been in the produce section and I wanted to get a dessert, but no it's stuffed on the other corner of the store. Without further Feng Shui details - just switch that location. Also giving the bakery a fun "sweet" look would be nice, too. b) Dessert items: French bakery items have been in for nearly a decade now, and it would be good to have some macarons, and tarts. c) The meat and deli meat / breakfast meats area feels so disjointed. You have a corner and an ice box and then you have the aisle near the baked goods and sush- and then there's a sauce/ slaw/ deli meat hybrid shelf near cheese items - tossed in with bread loaves. Then on top of that, the frozen fish are placed in the middle of the breakfast meats shelf. Here's what you should do: 1) Replace the ice-box meat corner with the fish & sushi serving area; with the signature sushi chef(s) - move or extend the kitchen along there. 2) Move the Frozen Fish items to the frozen food section. This has been a problem when looking for Gorton's in the past. 3) Replace the cheese and milk / juice coolers with the packaged meat. You could put in perendcular shelves for other meats, too. d) The store needs to fix the to-go item section. There's a cooler on the right-side that always feels out of place, and then the to-go section is too close to the cashiers, so it feels kind of stuffed in there - and then the fried-chicken and soups are somewhere else. Not too mention coleslaw and dipping sauces are somewhere else. For this combine the snack and chips aisle with a to-go items area, and put napkins, plates and forks. Then you need put sodas in the next aisle. This would be perfect for Stanford tailgating, picnicking, or bringing the party to-go. e) Remove the ceiling tiles and open the ceiling. It could be painted black or a light color. Most grocery stores have been going for a more warehouse-like look. It actually pushes away from an office vibe and adds onto the experience. e) Play happy music, even just instrumental jazz. This usually makes employees happy, too. The sounds of carts, squeaky wheels, coughing and checkout noises can cause employees to sometimes space out. Today chill lo-fi is very popular, too. f) Sell something Stanford-like. Many visitors often don't get around to the Stanford bookstore, selling some Stanford items would be fun, too. g) the lining shelves in front of the checkout area have always been a sort of non-buy section and it always feels like it is a waste of space. If you do have to use that space, please replace the area for "Easter baskets" with Floral Items and vases- and please make it a whole lot easier to access before you go the checkout area. h) Replace the two sets of double doors with automatic slide doors as it is so much easier to enter the store that way and you get space in return. i) Replace 2 of the checkout stations with 2 self-checkouts. Big Effort - Replace the Magazine area and the service desk area with the checkout stands. This is to help ensure that customers feel like the exit area is one side of the store over the other. Then the magazines and other items can go where the checkout stand used to be. This would be a good area to put the gift cards, and credit card items, too. Not to mention the balloon desk (since " g" there will be a line up of plants, flowers and vases along the front wall). j ) Minimize cart clutter. There are two places to get the carts. There should be one outside area, and one inside area. Most customers might prefer to have carts inside the store for easier access. The area near the Woodside bakery could be a great place to showcase the outside plant items, pumpkins etc.- and you could put a door there or a cashier stand there, to ring up customers. This stand would be great for pickup orders, too. k) Update the larger signs (especially the possibility of the ceiling removed). It would be fun to see the integration of redwood trees (Palo Alto anyone?), and maybe some items that are reminiscient of the area- especially Stanford and Menlo Park - there is a lot to choose from. l) Add outdoor ceiling fans in front of the store. With the outdoor plant items / pumpkins moved to the corner, you could add potted plants - and an area to sit. You could also put electric bikes to rent, too. I have other ideas. Please let know. I'm excited because this Safeway finally got a DVDPlay machine - hooray for $1 movie rentals! While shopping here can usually be a quick grab-and-go, there can still be a long checkout line during peak hours (including early evenings on weekdays). Minus 1 star for higher prices compared to other Safeways. (With the exception of sale items, which are at the advertised sale price of course) Minus another star for lack of a hot foods section. Unlike other Safeways, you won't find fresh sandwiches or fried treats here. However, there are self-serve hot soups, with little cups available for samples. read more

After trying multiple ways of getting groceries during SIP, we finally have success with curbside pick up at the Sharon Heights Safeway. They completed our order well ahead of time and sent a text to let us know we could pick up any time before 8pm. The order was accurately filled and the staff were super polite. The department manager Nichole has worked hard to deliver a quality service and is very open to any feedback so that she can continue to improve her already top notch team. We have always loved our Sharon Heights Safeway, but never as much as during the past year. The curbside pick up service has been heaven sent - ordering online is easy, and the store staff is always helpful about finding suitable substitutes. On one occasion, they noticed we had been ordering an item without any luck for a few weeks and let us know when it was back in stock. Groceries are chosen and packed with care, and promptly brought out to our car as soon as we let them know we are there. While everyone we have encountered has been amazing, our family is especially grateful to Nichole Arends for her professionalism, lovely attitude and excellent customer service. I have one word that describes all my visits to this Safeway. ........freezing! .! Every time I go into this store its soooo cold. I now keep a jacket in the car for when I shop there. Otherwise it's so much closer to my home than any other grocery store so I go there. Its a smaller Safeway and lacks a bakery and a deli. But they do stock some bakery and deli items. They have pretty much what the larger stores have but in smaller quantities. The aisles are nice sized, you can pass another cart easily. And they are uncluttered. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot. The employees have all been nice and helpful, i've never had a problem with them. Evening rush hour does tend to get crowded and may take a while checking out. Overall its a good place to shop, but for major shopping you might try the larger Safeway. And pack a jacket for the year round a/c. read more

Safeway - Large clean aisles - Grocery Near Me - Menlo Park, California

Last week, my husband and I were parked in the lot directly in front of the store entrance. We had the passenger side door partially open for the purpose of loading the vehicle. As my husband was walking around the car to place what he was carrying inside for me, an older woman driving with the driver side window down, pulled into the parking spot adjacent to my vehicle. As she pulled in, she clearly yelled two times, "close your door b!&^h". When my husband approached to finish loading our vehicle, he explained to her why the door had been left open, she looked at him and said, "don't worry about me, I'll just wait here" in a very rude tone. He noticed her wearing a Safeway uniform and asked he if she was an employee of this Safeway. She confirmed that she was and then proceeded to back her car out. As she pulled behind my vehicle, she looked over at me and yelled, "f%$k off" as she drove out of the parking lot. As a customer of this store for over eight years I am positively appalled at this behavior and will never be shopping at this location again. read more

An extra star for saving me a few times. Once during Christmas - I found giant safety pins and some perfect sized nutcrackers to complete the stocking gifts. Recently, their full sized fruit tart w/ chocolate covered crust, which was a hit with our friends. The fruits on the tart - strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, mandarin orange - all sweet. Nice light custard filling and the crust that everyone loves. Parking is never a problem. read more

I think I'm skewing the rating higher by giving the Secret Safeway four stars, but I can't help that I live within walking distance and am here five times a week, at least. They deserve that four-star rating! This place is vastly improved since the renovations a couple of years ago. They've made the whole place cleaner, brighter, and more user-friendly. Their selection is small, but decent. They don't have a bakery, but unlike the Midtown Safeway on Middlefield in Palo Alto, this place *does* import baked goods from the El Camino Safeway in Menlo Park. Plus, even though they don't have a butcher/fishmonger, they have a very good selection nonetheless, as well as someone making fresh sushi daily. The floral shop is much nicer than it used to be, and there's usually a helpful person there to provide assistance. In fact, I think the service here is excellent. A lot nicer than at the El Camino Safeway simply because once you've come in a few times, you're a regular! Sales are different here than they are at other Safeways, but I don't think prices are higher across the board. FInally, the new DVD Play machine makes me happy. read more

This is a very small Safeway store for a very quaint (and wealthy) Menlo Park. The location is prime for anyone who is working on Sand Hill Road or anyone who lives near the Sharon Park center. As for the grocery store itself, this Safeway will have most of the items you would be looking for at the same, competitive prices. Unfortunately, business can be very slow, and lines can be extremely long. That is pretty much entirely due to the size of the store and (wait for it) lack of self-checkout stations! Could it be that this Safeway does not want to keep up with the trends?! Preposterous, especially when Menlo Park is so techy!! Nevertheless, this store is perfect for people who are on break from work and need to go grocery shopping. I just wish that it's more efficient to shop here, but maybe things will change... It's tucked away in a dated strip mall but it's open late and has everything you need. This has been convenient to me when I need just one or two things for something I'm cooking. It's really the weirdest thing to review a supermarket, but here goes. I am here at least two to three times a week because it is on my way to work. I have not seen so many yoga pants with expensive cars shopping in my life. Oh, rich people, you crack me up. That being said, most of the folks who work here seem angry that they couldn't find a better job and they tend to complain to customers about their job or coworkers. After 3 extremely loyal years of going to this store I am deeply disapointed with the new female manager of this store. When you go on average 3 times a week and spend +-500 usd / month you expect some minimal flexibility for being a loyal customer, good spender and a familar face. I got used to : 1) long lines during rush hour and slow responses from mgt to it 2) paying more then other stores in exchange for the convenience of a smaller safeway ( more especially for the produce and meat ) 3) cashiers cant always be in a happy mood, as it is a demanding job. The first is Definitely the case in this store... What i did not get used to is the recent in-flexibility which is a direct result of the new female manager ( on a power trip which has visibly hurt the store ) As European i do not have an american ID on me. I have no ambition in ever getting one either. The implication of this is that whenever you buy a beer or a bottle of wine you show your non-american ID, in my case a European one. Depending on the mood of the cashier, you usually dont have to even show your ID if you look old enough and are friendly, which i am. ( not only for that reason :-) ) Age bypass as it states on your receipt usually. This is where the store FAILED ME several times recently and eventually the mgr herself who happened to be the cashier today. Newsflash : PEOPLE DO NOT GO GROCERY SHOPPING WITH THEIR foreign Pasports ! It is to dangerous to loose, including the visa in it.... The mgr and Safeway itself has to realise this entire region is thriving because of foreigners spending money. One of the things safeway probably makes its highest margins is the wine and beer section. If you do not allow people with foreign ID to validate their age based on their foreign ID YOU BASICALLY DISCRIMINATE BASED ON ORIGIN . This is something completely against American core values. I will file a complaint via safeway's official channels, as i am pretty certain any self respecting american of other origin would do if he/she felt discriminated. read more

It's nice that there's a Safeway close by, but this is a much smaller Safeway than most. You're not going to find the meats, seafood, or produce that you'd find at Roberts or Biancinis, but the prices are lower and the hours are longer. I'd also recommend going to CVS for meds. read more
