Man this place is totally 70s. It's pretty tiny compared to some of these large mega Safeways that are being renovated too. Have shopped here for 18 years-I live 1.8 miles away. ALL these years, this store has been 1000% wonderful! What happened? Albertson's purchased Safeway! NOW: Packaged potatoes and tomatoes-on opening at home-consistently rotten: Inventory control-sadly not working--don't plan on your favorite item being on the shelf. Dairy freezer sections dirty with 'old milk residue' on the floor. An employee recently told me that Management has designated this store as 'as upmarket convenience store'. That explains everything. I don't see neighbors there any more.........it is becoming a glorified 'Stop & Go' pick up store. read more

Due to the existing building, this Safeway store is smaller than most, but it has a big heart -- the employees are friendly and helpful, the store is clean and the selection, from produce to meat, from canned goods to spirts, is excellent. I feel lucky to have this store close to my house. Bravo for the Sharon Heights Safeway! read more

The delivery service at the Menlo Park safeway s a disaster. We have used it twice -- each time the order came over 4 hours late and only after we stayed on the phone line for half an hour to inquire as to where our order was. Then they charged us for 8 lbs of grapes rather than the 2 we had ordered and they delivered. The help line people were not apologetic and just made excuses. They shouldn't have charged us for the grapes at all, but they did. read more

What happened to Three's A Crowd? Wait, that was Lucky's motto. Of all the grocery store choices in the community, only one stands out as much as Safeway. I hear they pride themselves on friendly customer service and I've personally seen people get fired just because a bagger gave a customer a dirty look or said something impolite. But then again, not all Safeways' provide good customer service in its entirety. The disorganization of employees, lack of cleanliness, and work performance is not foremost importance of Menlo Park's Safeway. Most professionals in Palo Alto/Menlo Park vicinity work late and they don't want to shop for their groceries to end up waiting in long lines at the register over a gallon of milk and a bag of apples. Yes, this Safeway carries a lot of frozen foods, dairy products, fresh fruits, restroom supplies and meats, but how can they get away with only opening one cash register during late evenings? I always find myself in line with a couple of items for at least 8 minutes waiting for the grumpy Cashier to slowly work. Boxes are everywhere probably due to the night shift unloading boxes to be refilled on the shelves, but please keep them nicely stacked so others don't trip. Because this place is closest to where I work nights, I find myself gravitating toward this Safeway in Menlo Park even though I have to wait long. I'm glutton for punishment, but I wish there would be more Checkers on hand to help those who only have a few items to buy. read more

I have been shopping at this location for yearsss! Innumerable times I bought products that are 'on sale' but when the cashier rang the products, I was charged full price. There have been times when I have realized this only after getting home. However there have been innumerable times when I realize the price discrepancy, while at the store. Each time I point this out to the cashier they say that there must be an error in their system!! Yikes! Really? An error that is over-charging customers time and time again. Two weeks ago they once again over-charged me by over $15. When I pointed this out, they apologized and said "error in the system"! I am fed up of their lame excuses. Safeway chains are EVERYWHERE. Some Safeway stores stand out/shine, some are just there and some are questionable as to why they are even there. Sadly, this location needs some major improvement. I only come in this one if I am around the area and need a quick store stop for grocery/household items we are out of or for flower sales. I will be generous and give this location 1 star for being there when I need a quick store stop but PLEASE improve the: -Store worker's attitudes. Everyone in the store, including the customers there (!) seem to be unhappy and are unfriendly. The store is slow and seems to be low on workers, especially for service out. I rarely even get a hello or "how are you" during check out. I really am not sure if the workers are unfriendly because most of the customers are, if it's the other way around or if everyone just rode in on the WRONG horse. Whatever it is, it's sure unpleasant to be around and makes shopping there uncomfortable and non enjoyable. I got complained to for using the wrong door - sorry but I didn't complain to you for waking up on the wrong side of the bed lol Reminder people, this is NOT a ritzy "snob expected? specialty store like Drager's or what not - it is SAFEWAY... a main chain where you can buy mac and cheese and ramen for under a buck. It's like a Subway compared to a gourmet sandwich shop. Come on now... let's get real and get with the program please. The store is losing business due to the attitudes alone. I'm not asking for plastic smiles but at least find a way to help the workers (and customers) turn those unfriendly frowns upside down! -Produce department could be more fresh and better stocked. The produce department, in my opinion, is the most important department in any store. Keep it clean, fresh and well stocked at all times. -Flower department is not cutting it. Please stock your flower department with more flowers and ones that are still alive. Some are dying and out for sale. It's a real turn off - totally bad feng shui as it sucks the environment's energy. A respectful solution is to trim the dead ones off and sell the rest of the bunch for a reduced rate like most stores do these days. Create a bin for reduced flowers that are on their way but still have some life left. Don't disrespect them by letting the rot, waste away and create a negative atmosphere for the rest of them. Better sales and selection on the fresh flowers would be nice too. I came here today after an appointment around the block and needed flowers for my house. I regret to say it came to $30 just for the flowers and it took me a solid 15 minutes to try to select which ones looked the freshest. In the process of looking my shopping cart was stole TWO TIMES from non attentive shoppers. The second time I had to stand there and wait for the person to even return it. The department was also OUT of plant food for my bouquets but I still stayed positive and polite to everyone hoping to maybe get it in return. Menlo Park has 2 Safeways. The one on El Camino is HUGE and worth a 5 minute drive away from here. This one is a desperation destination - small, unfriendly, run of the mill, Only come here if you seriously have to. Considering the area (Sharon Heights in Menlo Park) and size of the store even something like an upgrade to a Mollie Stones, Lundardis, Key Market, Andronicos or another Trader Joes would be better. read more

This place is expensive, lacking main things that a grocery store should have (butcher, etc) and doesn't have much selection. Keep it a secret! The only reason why you should go here is if you don't have a car and live nearby. Andronico's down the road is definitely a better bet. read more

I also routinely shop at the Farmers Market, Andronicos and Trader Joes, but this hidden Safeway is great. Reasonable prices, a good seafood selection and all your cleaning supplies for decent prices. You can also find some good fruits periodically. I also enjoy the Buitoni brand products, which are regularly on specials. Nowadays, I only go to Andronicos for the occasional fruit or veggie and Farmers Market has been selling bad fruits... This is one of the nicer looking Safeways. Its a bit more rustic looking. The only downside to this location is that they don't have a deli. Other Safeways, you can get a sandwich or some hot food (like teriyaki wings), but not here. They do offer fresh sushi rolls though which are ok. read more

They have all the staples and everything, but does anybody notice how terrible the safeway brand meat and other brand products are? I purchased some (fresh) marinated chicken here, and the text of the stuff was like ground chicken had been smooshed together to form some sort of patty and then an overly sweet sugar sauce poured on top to mask the lack to taste. Also, there's always a line. I'd go here to buy some produce, maybe, and beer and cereal (you know, life necessities) but that's about it. read more

I agree with the other customers who suggest the management to hire more people. This place is indeed under-staffed. However, my review is exclusively for the shop florist. She (I believe her name is Rojeanne) is simply amazing! Several weeks ago, I volunteered to do a complicated flower arrangement for a big event. I know every little about this topic, and friends/ internet searches proved to be of little help. I went to Safeway MP since I had a great experience with their florists in the past. I've never met Rojeanne before, but she patiently taught me everything I needed to do, provided suggestions and ordered fresh flowers for the day of my event. The arrangement she suggested (and the flowers) was beautiful, and received many praises. I honestly don't know what we would have done w/out her. Thank you, Rojeanne, and thank you, Safeway for hiring talented and kind people like her! read more

They do not answer their phones I have called three times in a row wait over ten minutes and then get disconnected. Also make sure to check the expiration date on everything, I bought a cheese platter for a work event and when I got back and opened it to put it out the cheese was stale and molded!! It was expired 1 year prior to my purchasing it. I would not recommend this Safeway. read more

Unfriendly cashiers and customer service. Sushi guy was nice. A customer behind me pushed my cart into my arthritic leg and bruised it. I should have punched the old cantankerous man out. Is it possible to have self checkout? I spend alot on gift cards etc. This store can't handle the rush hour like Trader Joe"s does. They should manage it like TJ's does. The customer service here is absolutely abismal. I've had rude cashiers on multiple occasions and the only good one I had was after 8pm. They've dropped my fruit on the ground, knocked my wine over, and have shouted across aisles to each other while checking us out. This Safeway (the "Secret Safeway") is the closest Safeway to my house. It's ok for picking up essentials, but it lacks a lot of really basic stuff. The last time I went there I think I wanted to get 4 things and I was only able to get 2 of them (they didn't have plantains and heavy cream). The store also just feels very cramped, I think the aisles are smaller than a typical Safeway. I do my normal shopping at the Safeway on El Camino, which has a much larger selection. read more

The staff are quite a family... helpful, hard working. The store itself is the usual Safeway: organized, clean, has all the basics.

This safeway is good for non-perishable things, for example plastic wrap or parchment paper or chips. However, their fruit and vegetable selection is unfresh. I've seen wrinkly mangos, bananas that are well on the way to being over-ripe and many vegetables that look like they have had a bad week. When I go to this Safeway, it isn't that one or two kinds of fruit seem to be going bad, but consistently many fruits and vegetables don't look in good shape. This is really disappointing because this Safeway is a great location surrounded by many apartments, so it gets business despite the poor selection of fresh vegetables and fruits. I recommend the big Safeway in Menlo Park, on El Camino. Everything there is fresh, and the selection is huge. The yogurt also goes on sale frequently (esp. FAGE my favorite). read more

Something is not working right here. They have a good selection organic foods, and I have found the folks in the fruit/vegetable department to be very helpful. But the check-out experiences are usually mediocre to unpleasant. As other reviewers have noted, all the checkers seem as if they would give their right hand to be somewhere else. Great little Safeway located right off Sand Hill Road. Carry pretty much everything you need, but it's small size means limited brand selection. They also carry a ton of local and organic produce-their produce section is clean and well-stocked. Stop here 2 to 3 times a week to pick up various breakfast and lunch supplies. Staff is friendly and parking is never an issue. read more

Also, the store is weirdly split with food at both ends and cleaning supplies and pharmacy in the middle. Limited produce selection, too.
