Love this Safeway, I have been going here since 1981, and wouldn't think of going anywhere else, some of this staff have been for quite a while too. And at this time going shopping and seeing friendly helpful smiling faces, like Kennedy, Carmen, and so many others makes these stressful days, just a little brighter. It is a convenient location from my office, so when I don't have time, I get Chinese or Salad bar take-out here (it's nothing special, but convenient). Today, I saw a man eating the food directly from the buffet!! I mean, he's poking a fork into the trays and eating right there, double, triple dipping into the food! Gross!! He didn't look like a homeless person, a Caucasian dude in his mid 30's, decently dressed (sweatshirt and pants). He walked away when I gave him a dirty look, but the store should do something, at least, they shouldn't place plastic forks by the buffet to encourage cheapskate like him to eat off of the buffet. He could be spreading disease! I informed Customer Service, but he was already gone, so there was not much they could do. read more

On October 29 at 7:35 a.m. after dropping off our granddaughter at the bus stop I went into this Safeway to pick up grocery items. What was to be a quick stop turned into a very bad day. As I stood near the last aisle closest to the produce a floor cleaner (headphones on) came charging across a large stack of boxes and hit my heels. I was wearing running shoes with long heels jutting back which saved me from getting seriously injured. The man stopped and I said "You are going to injure someone." Not knowing I would later be at the ER getting X-rays on my right heel. A heel that is still tight today. At the time of the injury I spoke to a man in produce who pointed me to the front where he said I would find a manager. Once there I didn't see the manager but reported it to an employee. I drove to the bank for a second errand and as I drove I could feel pain in my right ankle (still do). I came home and iced it. While icing it I called the doctor and was told to come in to the Emergency take in. I called the store. An employee told me that they would look at the cameras in the store. She said someone would call me back. To this day, no one has I am waiting for the bill from my insurance. This Safeway obviously cares little if you are injured in their store. This incident needs to be known by the public as stores like this do cleaning and stocking right when busy shoppers are in the store. For me, I wore an ankle boot for ten days! read more

OMG. Avoid this store at 9pm. A dozen people in line for the ONE cashier. And the cashier might not be an employee. At register, not in a uniform in a big blue coat playing with his hat. Noooo urgency at all to ring people up. He preferred to play with his hat and just stand their chit chatting with another employee while the customer was bagging their own groceries. 9pm isn't really that late. It's not 2am. Too many people to have only 1 lane open. And self check out? Forget about. 2 of them open. But 1 of the 2 was malfunctioning. So just 1 actually useable with someone with a huge basket of stuff slowly ringing up their groceries. No reason for the other self service lines to be closed. NONE. It not like they have to pay a salary to the computer. Not like the computer has to go on break. This is why Amazon will take over the grocery business. People don't want to wait 25 minutes just to buy a couple of items. read more

I've been shopping here ten years generally satisfied BUT lately find the aisles clogged with display. Who is in charge here? They want to be grocery warehouse? I tried to complain to the meat guy, to the cashier, to customer service, then called to talk to manager. After 10 minutes waiting I gave up. This morning I went to get a mobile pickup order. Since Safeway coaxed me into ordering with a discount email. I've only been to this Safeway once and since I wasn't driving at the time didn't really pay attention to the layout and or parking lot. Anyway I get here driving around looking for where to pick up orders. Cannot find it for the life of me. So I parked tried to call customer service to see where I go and sat on hold for 10 minutes. I don't have time to sit on hold, so I hang up and walk inside. I wait, and wait and wait! Finally someone decides to make an appearance at the customer service desk. I'm beyond irritated now. I tell her I don't know where the customer pickup is at. She looks at me as if I'm an idiot and says "it's in the front" uh in the front of what? She says first row. Well Jesus, they could have signs stating where it is. So I move my car to the designated area and call the number on the sign. Goes to voicemail and has no mailbox. Wtf?! Really? Uh not ok. I'm here at the appointed time and no one answers the calls for orders? I'm already irritated. I call again finally after 5 rings someone answers. She says she will be right out. About 10 minutes later she comes out gives me my paperwork and loads the groceries. I don't think I will be using that service again. If you decide to use it the parking is in the front row! The worst Safeway I've been to. A third of the produce shelves are typically empty on a regular basis. The customer service unfortunately is a joke! Half the time there's only two, maybe three lanes open and the lines are ridiculous. Sadly this is the closest grocery for me. read more

This is the closest Safeway to my house. It is clean and the employees at the checkout stands are friendly and efficient but that is where the goodness ends. First and foremost advertised sales and red tag sales are often overcharged. It's like being pickpocketed by the store you are buying from. Second, I have never seen a manager on the floor helping the employees or checking in with guests. Third, the people at the seafood counter FOLD your fish. It's ugly and unspeakable. Such a mistreatment of something delicate and otherwise amazing. It ends up like a bag of cat food. Fourth, the butcher counter does a terrible job of breaking down cuts of meat. You end up with miss matched thicknesses of meat cuts so nothing cooks at the same rate. This place doesn't treat food like it should be treated or it's customers like they should be treated. Also I saw a couple of cases of Johnsonville sausages on the floor unattended in the meat section today so good luck everybody. read more

Complete failure to enforce mask policy. Just went here for one of the first times since shelter-in-place. I would say at least half the employees had masks not covering their noses, as did a decent number of customers, including one who just had their mask completely below their face. This needs to be enforced otherwise I will not go back. read more

I have been going to this Safeway for over 20 years. I even shopped here when the entire place was practically demolished during the remodel and I was practically the only one in the store. My kids' tile paintings decorate two of the parking lot light's cement bases. I shopped here when Dave in Produce would give you a cut of fruit whenever you were shopping in Produce. The nice ladies in the bakery always offered my kids a cookie when they were little and they'd get a balloon from the florist. Once when I needed a whole lot of strawberries (off season) one of the grocers helped me pick through several small cartons to get 12 cartons of perfect berries. I'm writing now to COMMEND the Safeway Menlo Park (on El Camino) store on continuing to provide exceptional service through the last 3 pandemic months. Workers like Leighan, Kennedy, and Allison, (those are just a few that come to the top to my mind) have been AMAZING. The management has done an incredible job with keeping the carts sanitized, signing, and keeping the check-out lines moving. So a great big THANK YOU to this wonderful team! Great job! read more

Do NOT order store pick up here. I came and 2 items was delivered to my car. Called again to complain and they said they said it's because they don't have them. I asked for a manager and all of a sudden they are now shopping for the rest of my items. An HOUR later still waiting. Never again. The two curbside pickup spots are poorly marked; I'd circled the whole lot and was about to give up when I spotted them. (They're on El Camino directly across from the dividing wall between staples and Big 5.) I had to wait for someone to pull out of one so that I could park. Then no one answers the phone number that is listed, voice mailbox not set up. I get through after five or six tries. After ten minutes, an employee with a joke of a cloth mask comes out with a cart that seems to contain parts of my order, but I can't see what's within the multiple bags, and the receipt is clearly not for my order. It is unclear if she understands this when I explain my concern and decline the groceries. I'm irritated that I had to roll down my window at all. Again, no answer then I try to call, this time ten or fifteen times. The people in the spot next to mine have been waiting for even longer than I have. They've gotten out of their car, one with a mask, one without. It's twenty minutes from when I first called: no end in sight, no human on the phone. read more

Safeway gets a bad rap. Lots of low reviews. OK, it is not Draegers, but you don't go to Safeway to buy $400 bottles of wine. This is one of their nicer stores. Staff there is consistently great. Checkout lines are short. Produce department is huge. The bakery items are actually GOOD. Lots of foreign products, like Japanese and Chinese items. And the pharmacy is the best around -- to my surprise. Good parking and access. I might not give this store five stars typically, but I think the numerous low ratings are undeserved. read more

I need to improve my shopping abilities. I went in to pick up food for the week, expecting to be out in 30mins. A hour and a half later I was leaving the store. Self sabotage was the main reason for this. It all started off in the berry section of Safeway. I left my cart somewhere nearby and then started sifting through all my berry options. As I was doing this, I saw an elderly gentleman in the corner of my eye going towards my cart. I thought he was trying to make a move on it and I was growing quite fond of that cart, so I wasn't going to let that happen. As I rushed back to my cart I dropped a blueberry carton. After I dropped them, I realized the other guy was just walking by my cart to get to his. In my defense the carts were identical, so it was tough to decipher between the two. Safeway should start color coordinating all of their carts for slower people like me. Anyways, back to the blueberries. As I started picking the blueberries up a Safeway employee told me that I didn't have to worry about it and I could have the remaining blueberries in the carton. He must have felt bad for me and my poor shopping techniques. When I started to stroll away from the blueberry disaster one of my cart wheels got jammed. The same employee called out to me and gave me a new cart. He must be winning employee of the month every month because he was truly going above and beyond. After I got the blueberry and cart dilemma figured out, I finally started the shopping process. I've grocery shopped before, but every time I go, it always feels like my first time again. After going through every row multiple times and constantly battling myself not to give up on finding the perfect tea, I finished in over a hour. If people are allowed to brag about their times for a marathon, I think the same should be true for grocery shopping. If you can stock up on all your groceries for the house in under 30 mins, you're a stud. I'm not a grocery shopping stud yet, but I believe I can get there. Especially with awesome employees that help shoppers overcome blueberry catastrophes and cart malfunctions. That nice employee definitely made it a 5 star experience for me. read more

I want to share an exceptional customer service experience I witnessed today at Safeway. The cashier struck up a conversation with the lady in front of me and they had the most engaging and fun conversation EVER! The type of conversation you might have over a glass of wine with a friend you haven't seen in a while. They were like minded people and chatted away about a specific topic that was very in depth. The lady really had a wonderful and positive experience, but unfortunately it was at the expense of everyone else standing in line, waiting to have their groceries scanned so they could go on with their day. The cashier wasn't slow scanning the items his new friend was purchasing, the problem was he actually just totally STOPPED all together and just stood there talking, laughing and enjoying this lovely lady's presence, not once, but multiple times. And when he did STOP (very different than a "pause"), it was a for an excessive length of time. Both the cashier and the customer were very inconsiderate to the other customers in line. It's the cashiers responsibility to provide customer service to ALL customers, not just one, but he chose instead to ignore everyone else in line (and yes, other people were getting frustrated as well) and make them wait. Not a big deal to him I'm sure, but to my 12 year old daughter waiting to big picked up from school it was. read more

Absolutely the worst lately in delivery. They really don't know what they are doing. I've ordered grocery delivery twice in the last few weeks. Both orders were missing refrigerator/frozen food. First time I accepted a refund, but not for the delivery and bag charges of course. Yesterday delivered was same. I called three times and was promised delivery....never happened. Feb 21, 2018: Well, I see the review I wrote a few days ago hasn't been posted. How odd. So to summarize and extend my unpublished review... Avoid the Safeway pharmacy in Menlo Park, CA at all costs. They have never in our experience been able to get pricing right. Their pricing from month to month on the same medications for my wife and me varies by over 1000% - that's a factor of 10! And this with no change at all in our insurance coverage. As I wrote in my unposted review, we're moving our business elsewhere. But in the interim, I picked up a refill for my wife today. It was for 30 capsules of a medication prescribed at 5mg/capsule. Safeway filled it with 15mg/cap dose. If my wife had taken this, it would have been a 300% overdose. And yes, we've checked with the prescribing doctor, and the Rx was for 5mg. This pharmacy is incompetent and dangerous. Avoid it. read more

With everything going on the employees should know what personal space is. We were scanning are items and the worker comes in and is in my person space. She thought we were not scanning the items but clearly we were. She was going through are bags and went through my purse. Which is VERY unprofessional and disrespectful. Sunday morning waiting at the deli for over 10 minutes without so much as a hello. There were two Spanish women behind the counter working. Both of them looked me in the face and continued working. I asked if they could help me and I was completely ignored. I went to a cashier to request a manager. One never arrived. I don't know what it is about this store. It's poorly managed and understaffed. Never got helped at the deli and I won't be back. Do better Safeway. read more

This place is clearly hurting for good employees in this area. I've been here 4 times in the last two weeks and the checkout lines have been insane, 25 minute waits at least. I'm giving Safeway Menlo Park a one star today for: Luring me into purchasing mangos - 10 for $10 - a huge box right at the entrance to produce - and then watching the gal ring them up as ' organic ' at a much higher price- because "they have Yellow tags" and "everything in produce that has a yellow tag is organic". THEN she rung up my Fuji apples- right at the front of the store in a big box advertised as .99 pound - as 'Gala organic' at 2.49 per lb. this all happened as an encore to a checker last week Ringing up my tomatoes- at the wrong code, and double the weight-twice! So my 2.39 tomatoes ended up being 6.77 -twice! A nice manager fixed the problem - but it took 15 minutes of my time. Today I lost out on the apples- didn't get my money back. At least I follow my mothers advice and watch the checkers at Safeway like a hawk and check my receipt. I will never buy produce again at Safeway. Your checkers seem to be dipping in to the till and taking advantage on unsuspecting customers or something sinister is happening with your green vs. yellow labeling system. I went to Safeway at 2 in the morning to get a couple of products because I'm just getting over the flu . The cashier ask to see my ID I didn't have my physical copy in hand but I had it in my phone and I'm of age to purchase NyQuil especially why would I go to Safeway at 2 in morning I if I couldnt . So I couldn't complete my purchase I asked for a manager . The cashier respond with he's somewhere on the floor and I asked could I speak with him then the cashier told me he's the only one with cashier training which I knew was bullshit! So I left and came back with my licenses the cashier was no where to be found another gentleman helped me but according to the previous cashier he was the only one that had registered training. The cashier that had terrible service was Pedro Duarte . Wish I knew the cashier name that helped because Pedro full of shit train better Safeway ! read more

This Safeway is conveniently located near Stanford University and Westin Hotel. Everyone that works there that we came into contact with was extremely kind and helpful. We especially enjoyed a gal in the Deli by the name of "Joy"! She was the nicest Deli person I've ever encountered!!! Have had many disappointing experiences here. For instance, I just had a guy in the meat department angrily tell me that 'the sale's over' when I asked him about a ground beef pack with the sale sticker half ripped off, and heard him chuckling as I walked away. Cashiers often seem extremely disgruntled and unfriendly about having to help anyone or even while checking out. Select employees have been extremely helpful when I interact with them, but these occasions are rare. Not to mention I've been overcharged for delivery deals out of this store, and I can't speak for the other stores but this one definitely embraces the fact that it's in Menlo Park and upcharges products accordingly. Happy to be leaving NorCal soon and going back to Stater Bros. read more

Perhaps curbside pick up is just not ready for prime-time. Actual items received were not quite a third of the items ordered and it took AN HOUR sitting in the parking lot. Took two trips separated by more than 1/2 hour for them to bring me 5 items. This is such a good concept (safer for everyone and not burdening the delivery system but not) but completely unworkable right now. read more

Had the terrible experience of having Diana Serna as my cashier today. No greeting whatsoever because she was too busy talking to her bagger (wish I had thought to get her name). It was bad enough they were speaking Spanish & the bagger was talking so loud I had to say something which was "do you have to talk so loud?" So rude to speak another language. read more

Cannot believe I could not find wax paper at Safeway today. After searching shelves where it should be (foil, Zip Loc, etc) I asked 2 employees. One directed me back to that aisle where I even asked a stranger (female) to help, and a second employee who couldn't locate it and even went to the front of the store to inquire. They even have their own brand, Signature, but it's not to be found. Great waste of time. read more
