Safeway is a chain supermarket and that will keep most of the reviews the same except for location. This shop was located off the 101 on the way to San Fransisco Airport. We stopped here specifially to purchase sandwiches for our trip back I am so happy that my wife and I found a Safeway not one mile from where we were staying in Berkley. This is an awesome supermarket and I knew I would be back. This market is also big and bright with nice wide aisles to push your carts through. The staff here is extremely helpful and was always able to point us (or even escort us) to exactly what we were looking for. On this visits we came here specifically to pick up some sandwiches for our flight back to New York. The choice of meat (and non-meats) is extensive and they have a wonderful selection of breads and toppings. The team member behind the counter helping us was wonderful and friendly. He was definitely having a good time constructing our sandwiches. I also found the restrooms clean and more than acceptable. I was more than a little surprised to read some of these one star reviews. Clearly we were in a different store or the fact that they only have one or two reviews with no photos or friends connected tells me that they're just not real. I have been shopping here for over 25 years, and never had any issue with this store, or any other location for that matter. During the pandemic, they seem to run out of everything... Which was totally acceptable and normal during that time. However, they seem to have become very lazy and not concerned at all with stalking their shelves ever since. Even the most basic items are out of stock consistently. Any trip to the store is usually followed by another trip to a different store to pick up items that we weren't able to find at this Safeway. Safeway's new self-checkout machines are extremely frustrating to use. They are overly sensitive and frequently trigger alerts for minor, routine actions. As a paying customer, it feels uncomfortable and unnecessary to have an employee review video footage in front of you over something harmless. The process makes customers feel as though they are being treated like criminals rather than valued patrons. What makes this more frustrating is seeing obvious theft go unchecked while honest customers are scrutinized over small technical issues at checkout. The experience feels inefficient and unwelcoming. I ordered some cakes from Safeway. Staff were very nice, and the regular cakes were just fine. However, the two tier cake I picked up didn't have a proper box or support inside the box, or the dowels that are typically used to keep cakes from shifting in transit. I lost the whole bottom layer of the cake. Not good. On the plus side, the cake was tasty, as was the quarter sheet cake we ordered. I had a very bad delivery driver named Luis. He picked up the groceries at the Novato Safeway and forty-five minutes after the website says he is on his way, the map shows him leaving the store. warning, do not park in the parking slots to the right hand side of the store. because when you are finished shopping and you have a cart full of food, your cart will stop abruptly & you will then have to hand carry each bag for quite a while just to get them in the back of your car. These are designated spots, very close to the front door as I am disabled. I will never shop at Safeway again. I am all the stopping of stealing carts. I think that's appalling, but you have marked your parking lot wrong as to not have access to these parking spots. I have seen so many seniors, disabled, and others struggling to maneuver those large carts around the store. I have been going to this Safeway for nearly 40 years. I'm done. I purchased lamb shanks 3 days ago 12/8 with a 12/22 best buy date. I opened the package and almost threw up. The lamb was disgusting and rancid. I took it back. Last month, I returned a chicken for the same reason. Having vowed to never buy meat there again (or produce because it's so expensive). The clerk would only give me store credit because I didn't have a receipt. Dave, who has been there forever, was no help! I told them to keep the disgusting meat and the money owed to me I will NEVER shop at this Safeway again. I only went there to get gas points. I'll try the other Safeway in town. Proximity is the only thing keeping this Safeway open. Cashiers and baggers are awful. At a time where food prices increase. Workers are consistently damaging products while scanning and bagging. I used to work at a grocery store it's not that hard. My cashier was shove product to the side. Sliding things over instead of picking them up. My produce delicate items were bruised and crushed. I didn't want to complain to the cashier or the manager because this may or may not be personnel issue or management issue. Guaranteed others in Novato will not be nicer than I was. There is a guy named DAVID at the self check out who is rude almost every single time I shop here. He's always going up to people telling them in an aggressive way that the scan gun is not meant to be used. And if there's no one else in the self check-out, he still counts how many items you have and if you're one over 15 he makes you go to a checkout lane. It's very annoying and makes me want to shop anywhere else. Maybe put him somewhere else in the store that is not customer facing. read more

I really hate giving anyone less than a 3 star review but I've received horrible service here over and over now. At this point I assume they just barely want to operate. The meat section will not freshly cut the meats, instead they precut them behind the large cuts. I have never been able to get the specialty meats like prosciutto cut here at all, they just say go get it pre packaged. The roast beef they have cut is very thick, I asked for it to be fresh and sliced thin and due to the language barrier of the employees not speaking English they couldn't service anyone without pointing and fingered numbers. I completely understand wanting to help give people jobs, but isn't there a job they can do so that everyone is happy. There are no baggers, and barely any checkers here. Dairy - I have had cheese here twice that is expired. Watch out for the dates. Checkout - checkout is SLOOOOOOOW here. Slower than the dollar tree. I'm not sure if everyone is just low on spirit is but I wouldn't recommend coming here for large trips. read more

Their butcher / fish department is worthless. They removed the bell that alerts employees in back a customer needs help. Since that move there is rarely anyone manning the butcher department and you have to wait 20-30 minutes for anyone to come out and notice you. This Safeway store has the most frazzled looking employees, except for int he floral department, the employees there are always smiling and cheerful. Occasionally I forget to park on that side of the store, and end up walking in by Starbucks where the energy is gloom and doom lately. The women working in that little kiosk look super stressed out, don't smile and are smug toward the customers who all also seem to be extremely sad looking. If you want to start your shopping off with a smile and good vibes, enter by the floral department, plus the smell of those flowers, and the fresh fruits and veggies just bring a sense of calm. Most of the cashiers never make eye contact or have any chit chat with their customers, they seem annoyed to be here, except the self check out lady who reminds me of Mary Poppins, very cheery looking! I prefer the Safeway in Ignacio, but I'll shop here now and then since it's closer to home. read more

It's like a Best Buy: they moved things around so you have to spend more time looking for what you want to buy. Why are the cold cuts on the other side of the store from the deli now where I can also buy cold cuts? I only go here hoping the deli has certain pre-made things like sandwiches and salads, but the last two times I went here, I was about to buy a sandwich, but the salami was grey... Didn't trust that. Next day I was hoping they restocked the sandwich section, but sure enough, the same grey sandwich was still there and nothing else. I can't find anything in this store, and I'm frankly done trying. For instance, today I looked for some lightweight Kitty Litter; there were several available (20 lb. equivalent) for $6.49- $6.99. I grabbed one from the $6.49 shelf. Shame on ME! Several tubs of Lightweight Litter 'Cat's Pride' were there. At self-checkout, I was charged $12.99. Stunned, I told the assistant that it didn't seem right. She told me I'd gotten $1.00 off the cat litter. (WHAAAA???) Sure enough, after paying "anyway", I went back to the scene of the crime. The tubs HAD been shoved over into a different cat litter's "space" on the shelves. *** Surely, Safeway, there MUST BE a way to provide lightweight 'dividers' between various brands of similar products! Driving through SF for a camping trip. Stopped in because we did not have a stove or wood, and this is the only large general store that is open very late at night. They had one stove available, but no propane for the stove. More important to note, we were harassed by an employee. One lady reminded us to put on our masks and we immediately put them on. Two of us had a mask on, and the third person was trying to put his on. Instantaneously, another employee took the opportunity to follow us and yell, yes - yell - at us to have our masks on. I would understand if we weren't obliging for an extended period of time, and there were other people around us. But neither applied. Love being unnecessarily harassed by employees.
