I generally frequent the Giant across the street but this Safeway has a few products that are better so I shop here about once a month. I would come to this Safeway more frequently if they would fix the checkout experience. I shop in the evening (parking is terrible during the day) and there is typically just one cashier which means I sometimes have to wait on long lines OR use the self-checkout. 9 of 10 times, the self-checkout machines get upset (no idea why, they don't explain or give you a chance to redo anything) and I am forced to "please wait for someone to help" and the only person around to help is the busy cashier so I try to avoid the self-checkout and put up with waiting on line for the cashier. Just avoid the store if possible. PS: Giant's self-checkout machines are much better - they get upset about 1 out of 10 times but Giant has a dedicated person standing by those machines so problems are resolved quickly. read more

The saddest Safeway of them all. Dark, cramped, limited, confused, depressing. The place of last resort - stopped in only after discovering the Giant on the center across the road is closed on Christmas Day (unlike its sister in the Westwood Center) and nothing's changed since the last time I stepped foot in here several years ago. So unfortunate since the side of Potomac Village Center is otherwise so upbeat and bustling. read more

Not the best Safeway in the world but not the worst either. This location is about half the size of most Safeway's and doesn't have as great a selection for most stuff, but it gets the job done. If you need something really specific I'd recommend trying a different location. read more

One of the smallest Safeways I've been to and the aisles are extremely narrow too. Nothing against the folks that work here...I'm mainly reviewing the physical store...My suggestion would be to widen the aisles and then look at carrying products to seperate you from the crowd. read more

I agree with Evan H.'s review. I used to work down the street from here 12 years ago and this store was a wreck. It is still smaller than most Safeways, but it has most items you'll need to get by. Their produce section is top notch. They sell all kind of strange fruits and veggies from South American origins. I'll stick to my Safeway in Kensington, but if I'm passing by and need an items or two, I'd choose this store over the Giant across Falls Road. read more

I love this Safeway Store in Potomac, MD at the intersection of Falls and River RD. Yes- it is a smaller size compared to other safeways BUT they usually have what you need, the prices are usually quite good and the people are nice. You can get in and out quickly. Seems a little old fashioned and they know your name if you have been shopping there long enough. Here are some of the reasons why I like it: Excellent beef- often on sale; bakery has many desserts offered in small sizes; excellent fresh vegetables and fruit; lovely flowers at a good price; deli counter featuring several brands not just the most expensive and a lottery machine! read more

This place is a "pit" even AFTER their grand remodeling... The aisles are narrow, the store is not well lit and, as a carnivore, I gotta say their meat dept leaves a lot to be desired... I've had to return food here several times due to spoiling before it's expiration date. Most likely the rudest experience ever! We are from Ca and visiting my Sister who lives in Potomac. While waiting for someone to help us at the meat counter, another lady found someone, but mind you, there was a gentleman behind the counter completely oblivious that we were standing there. So, once the other guy came up, he looked at us and said, "what do you want"? Really, how welcoming is that??? We should have walked out! Searching on line for somewhere else to shop. I am giving this Safeway 5 stars because of 2 departments: floral and bakery. The flowers are so fresh and unique. They last forever. The bakery makes amazing cakes--so much better than Giant's. We ordered a cake for a bridal shower and it was delicious--fresh raspberries and whipped cream, not too sweet--everyone was asking where we got it. Also, the gourmet cheese selection is good! The rest of the store is pretty cramped, but they are doing some renovations and moving things around, so maybe that will get better. read more

I used to shop at Safeway before I discovered Giant.I found that their produce was sad and their customer service was even sadder. Yesterday I went to Safeway just to buy some lottery tickets as there is no convenience store around. I walked out of there feeling like I have burdened and inconvenienced this employee who had to walk from one register to get my tickets and then walk to another register to cash it and did not bother to even walk back to give me the change. No thank U, no niceties and stone faced.I won't be back even for lottery tickets let alone anything else that does horrible store has to offer. Why not put a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods in its place? read more

Stopped by here last weekend to get some over the counter medications. Since it seemed the rite aid was not open or out of business this store was the option. Def agree with the other posts that the store is tiny and like a sardine can. Wish they would have self check out like other safeways. However this safeway is an average satisfactory Grade C safeway. As a local, I have frequented this Safeway more than other grocery stores in the area. While it is not the largest Safeway, it does offer all the essentials you need in a pinch. The produce here is varied and fresh, which is the main selling point. Yes, the bakery is small and the goods are average at most, but I appreciate that it is there when there is not a good bakery in the village in the immediate area. The cakes here, while commercially produced, are nice enough to bring to someone's house for a party or gathering. The staff at this location are extremely friendly-- a major selling point. A side note: Strangely enough, there is a marked difference between the clientele that visit this Safeway versus the Giant across the road. The shoppers that visit Safeway seem more genteel and local, but both me, my friends, and family have had more strange bump-ins with the racially ignorant redneck types at Giant. Where are these people coming from?! This area of Montgomery County is diverse and full of wonderful people, and it really saddens me that we are allowing these kinds of bigots to ruin our safe haven of a community. read more

I will start and will say that the place is very clean and also u have place to park / and also thy have unique vegetables and fruit but my disappointed was when I got my wife some roses for the our anniversary I buy the most expansive roses and the one the look so beautiful (24 roses i got the flower on Friday but on Sunday its been look like that i got them 2 weeks ago .... i don't have long drive from the store to my house and believe me my wife know how to take care of flowers but those one i guess was old and i paid a lot for twenty foure roses..... i guess it will be my first and last time from safeway :( read more

Pros: they treat my wife (a regular) pretty nicely. Pretty clean store. Decent produce department. Close to home, can usually get in and out pretty quickly. Cons: store is freezing all the time, with a capital F. Do NOT go in shorts and a t-shirt (and I am not someone who gets code easily). Meat department is barely passable, stuff never seems fresh. Fish counter (and service there) is a joke. And, the shoppers there are among the most miserable group of people I've come across (though this is not the store's fault, it's just the profile of the typical Potomac rich people who don't give a damn about their fellow human beings, courtesy, or the fact that we're trying to have a society here). read more

I am usually very pleased with our service at this location but today I was very disappointed. We were in the store during the rain storm (about 3:30pm) and our cashier literally threw our items down the belt! Bread, apples, onions and tomatoes nothing was safe. I find the produce limited, prices are getting out of hand, you came up with the idea of pricing a garlic clove individually and not weight?? Also I've found that small independent stores are competitive for shelf goods. I now do most of my shopping at the larger Asian markets where the product is better and much cheaper. This safeway location used to be pretty terrible until they remodeled the entire store several months ago. They now have an instore bakery and fresh breads, a better prepared food area and other nice additions. The store isn't the best I've been to, but its definitely acceptable. I find that because its small, it doesn't have many hard to find items. read more

Safeway in general is a 3 star option in my book. Not my ideal option and not where I'll find interesting things but it usually has what I need to get the job done. This safeway is smaller and more quaint but everything to get the job done. read more

This place is like a maze, can barely find anything. I don't go to Safeway often but definitely have a Safeway card. None of my phone numbers were working (thanks to the cashier typing it wrong most likely). After none of them worked, he was just like "u have no card?", told him I did, expecting him to just use the store card or something. Nope. Got ripped off by 3$. Not too pleased. read more

This store always smells like the oil from a dryer. Every time I get out it sticks to my hair and clothes. Today was particularly bad. The smoke was almost visible and my eyes were burning. It permeates the entire store intensely. Obviously they need better vents over the fryer. It's so disgusting. read more
