This location of Safeway had a single cashier for the entire store, which, as the honey discovered, is not amazing when you need to buy a single alcohol and can't use self checkout. While the space was orderly (if not set up differently than I'm used to for a Safeway) it was a large and busy Safeway with almost no one working in the aisles, so only having a single cashier felt incredibly strange. The checker would not sell her the wine without an ID, we are both in our mid 60's and do not look like we are 21. Then another checker named Rena took the bottle from my wife and said we need your ID, my wife said she was rude and loud. Just a reminder about Safeway at Redhill... GET A RECEIPT AND CHECK IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE. I often click on sale prices online before I leave the house, but several times I've bought items that can be scanned for additional savings with a "digital coupon" right there in the store. Several times I've scanned items in the store and not gotten the sale price but I figured it was too much trouble to contest (or I didn't want to hold up the line) so I let it go. Today I'd had enough. I always bag my own groceries so I don't pay 100% attention to the prices as they're being rung up. I don't want to hold up the 3 or 4+ people in line behind me (since there are usually only 1 or 2 check stands open.) So I moved out of the way and checked my receipt and found several wrong prices. I went to the one person at self-checkout. Of course, the person there couldn't figure out that the prices were for the actual items I'd purchased, and argued that they weren't the same items (even though I took photos of the items with the price tag adjacent) so I marched my cart back to the back, past the "employees only" sign and found someone to help me. We removed every item from my bag and she went through the prices and the sale prices which I proved with the photos I'd taken, and I'd been overcharged over eleven dollars. People supposedly win and lose political positions over the price of groceries, so it REALLY IS a big deal. I guess it was worth the extra 15 minutes. ugh Watch your stuff. Better yet, shop at Fairfax Market, United Market, Grocery Outlet or even the Andronico's Safeway (which is far more pleasant but doesn't always have the sale prices) and send a message to the folks who really don't care one way or the other at Safeway. read more

This Safeway is best seen as either 'they are the only ones who stock a particular product' or a 'last resort' place to shop. My own experience over many years is that it was once OK, but is not any longer. The dairy never tastes fresh, produce is marginal at best, shelves are frequently not fully stocked by mid-morning and the checkout lines often become excruciatingly long. I shop here at least twice per week. Today really infuriated me! Routinely when the checker asks if you want bags they frequently expel a large sigh, as if to say, "really won't you bag them!" Today I saw the usual sigh, but at the end , when she failed to bag the watermelon and 2-liter soda bottle I asked her to put them in a bag as I have stairs to climb. I purchased a couple of hot items right after the kitchen had closed, at 50% off. I know they were on sale, but the quality was so poor, I was afraid I would be sick from undercooked food. I tried to bring the items back, even just for store credit, but they would not give me a refund, even with the receipt in hand. Safeway never ceases to fail me. They're either put of what I need or no one will help. Today I went to the Starbucks on my 10 minute break. Just one employee, whose fault this isn't, and one super annoying customer at Starbucks, paying for all her groceries there while I waited. Then she ordered drinks. I'll never shop here again. It's understaffed and mostly self checkout. Just had a rude experience with a clerk today. I'm deal with grief and kind of spaced out. I accidentally gave the clerk my phone number incorrectly twice and she rolled her eyes and gave me a death glare. This is after I even apologized. Wow, a current two-star average for what I think is a very good Safeway, what happened?! There are some great people who work here and some really rude and obviously unhappy people working here as well. We have been coming here for many years , sometimes 4 times a week. Never had any confrontations or bad experiences that would warrant it yet some of the clerks at self checkout have been very rude and angry with us. We are nice , polite people so we don't understand why they are this way to us and others we've seen. Well .... we do have a theory. Our theory is this- Safeway is a huge corporation. Corps only care about making $ and not about how they treat their employees. So they treat employees badly and they in turn take it out on on the customers. I've seen employees yell and bully other employees right in front of others. That's very unprofessional. I don't know if they were managers, but in my day, if your boss had a problem with you, you were called into a private office and talked to POLITELY about the situation. I've cringed when I see certain clerks berating the sweet guys who sweep the floors, collect the carts, clean up spills. No one needs to be talked to like that. I was in this safeway one time with my service dog in training and people bring their dogs in all the time! Its frustrating because I go to tell a manager that its a health code violation and what do they do? Yell at me and cause me to have an episode! One specific woman im sure you know who im talking about she has short hair (blond) 5"4 extremely grouchy and rude all the time told me "im not going to argue with you about it" i left the store hyperventilating and my service dog alerted me to an extreme episode which did happen. Back in the summertime, a friend and I picked up a dessert item to try after dinnertime. The cashier at the 15 item or less line took a look at our item and made a remark to the effect of "people will spend money on anything these days." My friend and I were cordial, but taken aback by her comment. This Safeway's Jewish food section is so tiny, it almost does not exist. No Hanukkah candles, either. Of course, I tried to buy the candles on the second night of Hanukkah, so maybe Safeway sold out. Safeway also sells very chemically-laden ready-made frosting. Please don't tell anyone, but I have some in my pantry, which I bought in a state of panic when my organic frosting turned out a strange brown color! If I could give Safeway zero stars I would, and for multiple reasons. For the last couple of months every time I go into Safeway the lines are backed down the aisles. This is so irritating when you just want to pick up some quick items for dinner after work. I have to give all the patrons credit because everyone has been really patient, but I don't know how long we can put up with 15+ people in line. Once in awhile when the lines are backing up the manager calls for another checker, but watch out because that checker will be super upset and will complain about needing to take her break the whole time. Last night I went in and a lot of sections were completely bare or under stocked. Really Safeway? The entire pudding section in the refrigerated section was bare, zero, not one single pudding. Here is what angers me to my core about Safeway. The way the checkers and managers treat their workers with developmental disabilities. I work in Special Education so this really kills me when I see the way they treat their fellow co-workers. One day I had to restrain myself from choking the manager when he berated the poor developmentally disabled guy in front of at least 20 people and then yelled at him to just leave. Ughhhhhhh, it burns me up. Safeway gets a lot of kick-back for having disabled people on their staff so you would think they would actually treat them like humans. I understand the guy makes mistakes but instead of treating him like scum you could pull him aside privately and help him learn from his mistakes. Promote independence, not ignorance.This might come as a shock Safeway but people who are disabled have feelings too. I am writing letters to every single person in management about this issue. Seriously. The management team/Union leader/whatever really needs to read these posts. They are all accurate in their criticism of this place. I shop here every week, multiple times a week and I'm starting to consider not doing so. I am constantly in awe of the level of ineptitude and the general condition of the store and its' employees. I'll limit my rant to two major complaints. 1. The lines. The lines have to be addressed. It's been a year of consistently long lines for me but judging by these posts, it's been an ongoing problem for a very long time. It is absolutely ridiculous. I mentioned how convenient self checkout machines are in other grocery stores. The perma-grumpy checker unceremoniously replied "we don't have room." Uhh.... knock out the half floral half candy abyss towards the produce side of the store. Or knock out the 5 or 7 check out lines you have that you never use. There's your room. 2. The out of stocks. Doing weekly shopping on the weekend is a guarantee that you will not find what you regularly buy and prefer. You will always have to settle for another product or go elsewhere for your favorite. This weekend they were out of cases of Refreshe water (Safeway's own product). How do you run out of your own generic product? How do you forget to order something that is brought in and sold out every week? The buying/ordering team needs a serious overhaul. Please, give these Yelp reviews the attention they deserve. We are a long suffering neighborhood of Safeway customers. This store never seems to improve. Unfortunately, my husband and I got into a check-out line with one very pissed off checker today. Really killed our early Thanksgiving shopping experience. We're past sixty and don't move like teenagers thus by the expressions on our checker's face, we asked too many questions re: cashback, bagging, using a Safeway Gift Card. I've been shopping at this Safeway for over a decade. It's the closest supermarket to my home so I shop here mainly for convenience. I also shop at United Market, Andronico's, Whole Foods, Lucky, Woodland's Market, Trader Joe's, CostCo and a few others depending on where I am and what's on my grocery list. I base my review on these comparative experiences. Safeway is a supermarket, not a specialty food store. There are a lot of things I like to buy that Safeway doesn't carry. I don't mark them down for that. Safeway also carries a lot of processed foods that I don't buy. I don't mark them down for that either. For certain basics like milk, coffee, cereal, diapers, fruit and vegetables; Safeway's price and selection is more than adequate for me. My primary complaint is the long lines that I've experienced here. Safeway in Marin is like a Target Boutique in Bloomingdales. The quality of things is not there but the prices are jacked because of the location. Labeling and shelf positions are directed towards the careless and dense. Sales are constant and mean nothing in the long scheme of things. The store promises much more than it delivers. Locals avoid the store but it still does a lot of business becasue there is little competition in the area. The service is attentive but dominated by the automatic questions that standardize service. Amusement can be gathered by listening to the rote inquiries. United is a better choice in produce and icecream. Andronico's is comparable in price for dairy but almost matches in excess. Safeway is safeway. I realize that I wanted it to be the store I remembered long ago in the Neignborhoods of San Francisco. It is not that anymore. It is the glitche of memory and hope that shows me that things do change. read more

Long checkout lines at nearly anytime of day. Shelves not stocked on a more than weekly basis. Little to no help at the customer service counter. Baggers that are not very fast or efficient. I have even had a bagger knock over fried chicken onto the counter and then pick it up with his bear hands, from the not so clean counter area, put it back into the container and then into a bag like nothing happened. Are you freaking kidding me. Employees that don't appear willing to pitch in when the store is super busy. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your view, the people that shop at Safeway are super patient with the many things wrong at Safeway.
