One register open at about midnight on the evening of 3/12. That's to be expected. Line is about 5 people long. A lady comes into the store with no shoes (possibly homeless) to buy alcohol. They escort her to grab a bottle and then open up a special register for her to pay without waiting in line. Mildly annoying but understandable. Line at the one register is continuing to grow. Then a guy comes up with a full cart and asks "are you open?" (The cashier does not have his light on and again had only opened up that register to sell alcohol to the shoeless lady). He says "sure!" Ignoring the ever growing line at the register next door. Poor customer service. To say the least. read more

Terrible Safeway with horribly incompetent employees. I'd recommend the local 7/11 or gas station over this place. The manager told me to have a terrible day after falsely advertising that they had something in stock. Even says it's available for pick up and delivery. Not a single employee, even the cheese specialist knew what the cheese was. It's never been sold at the store! What a scam. They intentional sell things online they know they don't have any pretend that it's okay by forcing a substitute option on you. If you know you don't sell it you shouldn't be able to post it online. Parking here usually gets pretty packed, but if you don't mind walking you'll get one quick. I came here to pick up some groceries for the house. A few cases of water, snacks, milk, cereal, bananas, etc. Register person was super friendly and offered to help us load the car. I bought some scratchers and lottery tickets at the machines. $13 dollar gain, 4 out of 7 scratchers, which means I wasted my luck on that so I won't be winning the lottery anytime soon. I cannot recommend against going to this store more. The service is horrible. The produce is horrible. The meat is rancid. The entire store is run down and has the ambiance of a prison. The staff treats everyone like they are trying to rob the place. I have tried reporting my concerns to the management several times. Nothing. I will never go back to this store even though it is close to where I live. My only hope is that it closes down and something better replaces it. read more

Customer service here is terrible. I was at the service desk waiting for a staff, and no one came to help or asked if I needed help. Several employees walked by and didn't acknowledge that I was waiting. There were a couple of cashiers standing at their register with no customers chatting it up with the bagger. Both looked in my direction and still did nothing or said a thing to me. I asked for help, and they continued on with their conversation about their weekend plans. I asked if they could page someone, and they said they could leave their post. I asked if they could call someone over the intercom, and they said that they couldn't because they needed to ring customers up... no one was in their lane at this time. Security that happened to walk by at the time, said that we would try to get someone for me. It's like no body wants to actually work anymore. Received belligerent customer support , sold corrupt apple gift cards with mis matched sleeve and card in side . Reported to Safeway corporate, and Apple corporate. Store manager refused to connect with apple who said card was bad. Apple said they were contracted to refund and refused . Reported customer service to Corporate offices to swiftly deal with this branch . They tried to stick the receipt in my face instead of refunding according to the fair debt credit law . Now Corporate will deal with them . Apple put incorrect card in jacket and Safeway crammed charge on my credit . Card . Because this Safeway responded the way they did corporate got involved. Please do not by gift card from this location they have horrible customer service and if and ignorant if I might add . No customer deserve bad gift cards and then poor customer service . I just moved to the area and I've been to this location several times. Two of the times, my cashier was Dominic. He's a friendly guy and has just been really helpful each time I've come in. I come here pretty much every other day due to living right next to it, so it's pretty convenient, only convenient for taking back the things that are expired! I kid you not, I have went back SEVERAL TIMES due to them lacking in their stocking. Frozen bananas were MONTHS EXPIRED! HOW ARE FROZEN BANANAS MONTHS EXPIRED? Also their mochi ice cream, expired! I got some cottage cheese w/ pineapple, expired. Packaged apples, expired. I've seen red meat that have black spots on it as if it was burnt while cooking it, only it's not even cooked. It's still packaged in their meat department. I literally spend their paycheck whenever I go there & they can't properly stock items that are not expired. read more

This used to be my go to Safeway for decades. In the past few months however, whenever I go there are no shopping carts. It seems like they only have a total of ten shopping carts. Several times I have gone there to shop only to not be able to find any carts, so I leave and have to shop somewhere else. I just attempted to do so today and again, no carts. When I ask about it employees told me "if there's none we don't have any" and there's no explanation beyond that. So as of today I will not be shopping here anymore and will tell others the same. read more

Safeway on Branham and as a whole need to pick up the speed on making food at Boars Head. I like to eat this sandwich weekly, but I have yet to ever have someone make my sandwich in less than 15-20 minutes. And mind you, this is only if there is no line. If there is a line, don't even bother. Safeway has got to be losing a lot of revenue due to productivity issues with their team. The only reason I gave this a 2 star instead of 1, is due to the fact that a nice you gentleman helped me and was very courteous. read more

This appears to be a deliberate strategy by the store manager---not enough carts translates into letting the customers bring in carts from the parking lot instead of hiring an extra clerk or two to perform this task as part of their duties. This large Safeway has only about a dozen shopping carts. During the past few months, there has been nary a shopping cart to be found. Staff tell me that shopping carts have been stolen. This is a shame, yet every other grocery store in San Jose is able to supply its customers with shopping carts. They order the type with devices that lock if the cart is taken from the property, for example. The fact that the manager of this Safeway seems wholly unmotivated to address the problem is perplexing to say the least. This is the best Safeway that I've been to in San Jose. I am so glad it's close by too. They remodel and seem to update their interior often. Produce, Meat, Poultry, Seafood, Bakery, Deli are all great and fresh quality here. Some people say they know Safeway is known for pricey items, but unless you shop smart, you can definitely can find steals and deals...especially with extra Just For U personalized deals or coupon center discounts plus manufacturer's coupons. Lately, I can get 2% Lucerne gallon milk for $2.99 with Safeway's Just For U discount on my card, but I also have a Gotmilk.com 35 cents off coupon, So I got the 2% Lucerne gallon milk for $2.64. Many people seemed to like my check-in and tip for this advice a few days ago ^_^ Glad to help. The Safeway Just For U program definitely tracks what you usually buy and gives you incentive to come back. My favorite bakery item is the Fruit Tart (the big one). Fruit is fresh. Custard is yummy. The crust is sooo good, even lined with chocolate. You can pre-order any special cakes or tarts that you need for special occasions at the Bakery department and also ask them to personalized them with special words as well. Meat is good here like Rancher's Reserve cuts. There are also other stores within this Safeway which are US Bank, Jamba Juice, and Starbucks. Quick fact: I used to be a barista at that Starbucks about 7 years ago. You are Not allowed to give tips to the baristas here because this Starbucks is within Safeway, which is against store or corporate policy. They coldheartedly fire people 1 day before they can officially join the union. Pretty much every body, including myself, who was hired for Safeway's Re-Grand Opening long ago was fired. As in used and disposed. My dad likes DiGiorno pizza. Because this Safeway is open 24 hours, he can get his midnight hunger fulfilled. We also like the bread here. The quality is wonderful. Great rise and texture. We mainly purchase the french and sourdough bread. Garlic bread is good too. I liked the eclair here too. I had a funny incident at SJSU years ago when a night class professor got distracted with me eating 2 eclairs. I didn't want to be starving for evening class, so I decided to try these yummy looking eclairs one day and bring to school. My professor lectures through class very animatedly. Then, when he saw me bite into one, he asked me jokingly, "Is that an eclair?" "Yes," I said. Then, he said, "Is it good?" I was like, "It's okay." haha. Went here on a mission to get the stuff we need and get out. The place is big, spacious and standardized that I knew where to go for the stuff I need since I have been to the other branch in Milpitas. I needed a bunch of stuff for my Mediterranean course and was able to grab all of it here. Sadly their fish department was sub-par and we got a couple of dover fillets in our cart. Seafood selection was not fresh and limited so their prices are unreasonable (for me). Other than that everything else was good. This Safeway also has its own jelly belly dispenser with alot of choices to select on. I just found out that there is a sugar free jelly belly in your favorite flavor! Wooo hoo!! Oh and the lady told me that since jelly belly isnt the same as the jelly beans with the gummy consistency, it wont stick in retainers or braces when you eat it (kiddo has braces). SCORE! .. The things you learn in grocery stores are very informative! Anyhoo, I didnt get to buy some sushi but they look yummy too! It'll prolly be something I would buy when I come back. 3 stars for now. read more

This gets a 4/5 stars in my Safeway book. I've been to a lot of Safeway but this is by far my favorite. It's conveniently located in this plaza with plenty of roomy parkings. I love it here. The staffs are super nice and I especially love how they always offer to help you load your groceries in the car! You can find everything in Safeway. From fresh kale to organic produces to quality cheese! And if you're feeling hungry check out their cafe. They offer sushi, sandwiches and other entrees plates! There's a Jamba Juice and Starbucks inside as well! Also a bank but I haven't used it yet. Ohhhh! And red box is right by the door! Be careful on Sundays about 5-7pm it's prime time for grocery shopping so the lines will get really long. But you can always op out of it by using the self check out! Never thought would be writing a review on SAFEWAY but was pushed over the edge on this one. The other half never liked this place complaining they are never stocked properly, blah blah. Never really bothered me as this location is right down the block from our home. Just kind of dealt with it. Cashiers are off from the vets to the newbies. Fine, but don't force me to do the self check out because you cannot open a register. If wanted to check out my own grocerys, would have applied for the job years ago! Final straw was the day I handed over my card and two measly coupons. One for buying 8 yoplait yogurt cups and the other for an specified amount of frozen veggies by the green guy. You would have thought I insulted the checker's mother as he smirked and said, 'how many of these yogurts did you buy?'. Ummmmm well if modern tech serves my memory correctly, if I had NOT purchased the correct amount, the coupon would decline! This guy went over to my basket of already bagged grocerys and pulled out the yogurt cups and the frozen veggie items to count them. Folks in line behind me were laughing.. I was shocked. Then the card swipe machine was not working which clearly stated 'error' on the screen... NOT DECLINE. I pulled out cash and this guy said, 'maybe you should put your money in the bank!' This is how every Safeway should be remodeled. They did well for a normal-sized grocery store. I've been to bigger ones in better neighborhoods, and they still don't match up to this one. Staff here is friendly, and layout is simple. It's wonderful to see a Jamba Juice, a Starbucks, and a bank inside this Safeway. How ingenious! But wait...there's more! They also have a full nut bar and an olive bar. The deli area is always stocked, and their signature sandwiches rock. I have not yet tried their soups, but they look pretty appetizing. There was even a line at the DVD rental kiosk. This place has it all. Too bad I can't get a haircut or get my keys made here also. Maybe they'll work that in by next year. I'd have to minus a star for minimal parking and space. Nevertheless, I'd rather go to this Safeway instead of the nearby Lucky's. I feel that I have to wait longer at Lucky's because of the long lines. I guess I've been lucky with quick service at this Safeway. Besides, I've always liked Safeway meats and produce more than other grocery stores. So sorry Lucky's, you ain't so lucky anymore. read more

First impression... ran in at 10pm to get some things I needed that night. Only one register open, and they were switching out the drawer for another, so the cashier was standing there looking helpless. Twelve people were in line looking irritated. I went and got my things, came back up front, and... it was still happening. I waited quite a long time for two items to be rung up and out the door. Yes this has to be one of the best safeways that I have ever been to, it really has everything and quality groceries compared to other safeways and other supermarkets in general. The only knock I have on this place is the parking lot is very compressed with its spaces, but other than it is probably one of the best supermarkets in San Jose!!! They have a great bakery area, always the best cakes and also offer slices, fresh cookies, lots of variety with all the baked goods. The deli area is nice and the wait is never long to get a sandwich. The meat area is really good especially with their Rancher Reserves Line of Meat is pretty good quality. They also have candy area where you can try candies, this safeway also has a coffee/jamba juice inside, this safeway is the King of all Safeway supermarkets in South San Jose! read more

During their busy times, such as when people are coming home from work and buying dinner fixings, they definitely need more staff members on register. I come here quie often in the middle of the night and can always count on getting what I'm looking for. I love the fact that tis location is 24 hours. It's very clean and always stocked. Right when you walk in they have this candy counter where you can bag any candy they have as if candy factory was part of it. I'm a faithful Safeway shopper, and I enjoy the subtle differences of this location from it's other stores. This location is always well stocked, clean, and filled with nice employees. They also advertise their sales well, and it feels they have better sales from other locations. Recently, I lost my wallet in their parking lot and a service clerk saw I dropped it. As the clerk walked over to pick it up, two thugs grabbed it. The clerk asked for it back even though they resisted. Thankfully, all my belongings were in tact. This Safeway has its advantages and disadvantages. It's really nice that there are self checkout kiosks and both Starbucks and Jamba Juice all in one place. The layout of the store is really confusing, though. Took me forever to find the cream cheese because they weren't near the milk or dairy. The baking ingredients were near the produce as opposed to pastas or international foods, or even breakfast items. It is a pretty big store compared to the other Safeways I have been to, so there is more selection. read more

I live very close to this Safeway location and I have for years now. I usually come here late at night to buy snacks for the week and it's so convenient because it's open 24/7. Their late-night staff is very short, but even though they're very friendly and helpful. They even chit-chat with you! It's usually hectic during the day especially around the holidays, but customer service is still on point. I enjoy their deli food at this location compared to others more due to their freshness and variety. I usually try and find Safeway's "seafood Louie" salad but only certain days they don't carry it, but it's okay because it gives me the opportunity to try the other. This place is completely disgusting! Food is spoiled and it's a complete mess. The employees are unaware of where their merchandise is. I came a couple months ago for the first time and purchased chicken from the meat counter. I came straight home and started cooking. As soon as I unpackaged the chicken it gave off a terrible rancid smell. I am shocked that the butcher gave me rotten chicken. There is no way she could not smell the aroma permeating from the chicken as she pulled it out from the meat counter to weigh. It was a waste of my money and time. I had to make another trip to a different grocery store in order to make my dinner Since this Safeway is so close to my house i decided, like a fool, to give it one more chance today. As i walked around i realized how poorly set up the store is. For example, there are three sections where you can find sausage/hotlinks which made it confusing to find the linguica. Other items/rows were weirdly organized too as well as messy. Also, I forgot to get cheese and a young man sent to retrieve it could not for the life of him find Monterey Jack cheese slices. They also couldn't find the price for cherry tomatoes or where they were located to retrieve the price for the customer in front of me. These things however are just an annoyance and not something that would make me stop shopping here. What did make this shopping trip my final straw was the disgusting molding bacon they had in their deli section. I thought the rancid chicken was a fluke but yet again they have spoiled rotten food out for sale! This is the worst Safeway I've ever been to! It's disgusting, unsanitary, and a health hazard. And given my interactions with the employees and the state of the store its safe to say that the employees and managers at this location are incompetent. read more

Wow!!!! I came in to get 1 simple burrito and it took FOREVER!!!!! I was there for over half an hour waiting as the woman in the deli painfully made chili. I have never seen anyone make something so lonely. My boyfriend and I decided to go drive an extra 3 miles (no big but considerong what happened today was unacceptable!) We were looking at shampoos, lotion, candy etc. All of a sudden and person came up around the corner. I voulsnt stay . I refused to spend my money at that safe way because of her.
