Hmm, I'm actually a litle surprised at this many negative reviews. I've been shopping here since I moved to S.L back in 2013. Although I'd be lying if I said I've never had a bad experience here. But considering how long I've been shopping here I have to say the bad experiences have been an exception as opposed to the rule. Although the bad experiences I've had have all come from the Deli Dept, which seems to fit into the pattern of most of the negative reviews. Someone mentioned the short heavyset Asian woman in the deli department. Yeah, I knew exactly who the reviewer was referring to. She does always seem overwhelmed; and generally has a poor attitude that suggests she miserable at her job. It also seems that when they have 5 dollar chicken specials they are totally unprepared for the increase in volume. I don't care for the safeway fried chicken; a little too salty. But one day last month during their 5 dollar special, my spouse wanted the fried chicken. I was told it would be 45 minutes to an hour and a half. C'mon now, seriously? But other than the deli dept. I've had really good service, and sometimes really good sales around the holidays. Especially in the meat n seafood dept. which always has very good quality meats. read more

I brought my own bags as I normally do, but because of COVID I had to bag my own items because I brought personal bags which I had no problem with. The cashier then told me I could only put my bags in the cart to bag my items and they couldn't touch the counter. She's saying this all while not wearing any gloves or a mask herself. Understanding that masks are low she could have worn something to protect herself and the public. When I asked why she wasn't wearing gloves she said she has a medical condition. She's explaining this to me while she's putting her hands all over mine and everyone else's food. So let me get this straight. I have to bag my own food and not have the baggage person do it, but you both can touch my food along with everyone else's and not wear any form of protection. This doesn't make any sense. I've been to multiple Safeway's and this one didn't seem to have good policy measures in place. I looked around and numerous employees were wearing masks and gloves. Don't bother ordering groceries for pick up. They are always out of stock of items and take FOREVER to bring groceries out (sometimes as long as 30 minutes). It's also difficult to find parking in the Drive Up & Go spots as they seem to always be taken by people going inside the store to shop. read more

I love this store! They always have whatever im looking for! And if they are out, the staff is always willing to help me figure out a solution! Real problem ad solvers. I have gone in when I was in a pinch, and a sweet soul named Mia was there to calm my nerves and assist me in my shop. She really saved my night, I cannot thank her enough. I went to customer service and a manager named Judy was there she looked right at me and as I was saying something she put her finger up cut me off and answered the phone and then ignored me. I waited but she continued to talk on the phone and didn't even say hello to me or hold on a moment or anything just shut me up by putting up her finger. Very rude customer service. Safeway is usually not a destination for me. sure they have a lot of goodies but prices are at a premium. sometimes i check out the deli sections for bargains. last week i found one: Hoagies (special 5.99) foot or so long -seem 2 pounds minimum, including bun and veggies. -lots for meat in the hoagie, lots more than subway, good for a couple snacks -sure, the meat was probably a day old (on the selling block) -am sure this isn't the only safeway that has sales when too much deli meats accumulate. read more

I like this Safeway a lot It was remodeled a few years back . It even has a Starbucks located inside for you coffee addicts.LOL . I had clipped some Super Saver coupons from Sundays Paper and brought them there did some shopping and at check out the total was $56 before coupons . After the cashier had run the Coupons thru and popped the "Safeway Club Card " thru it dropped the price down to $28,thats almost a savings of over 50% pretty good for a few coupons LOL. read more

If I could give this location one star I would. This has been my go to place for grocery shopping for well over 10 years that will no longer be the case. I placed an order through the Safeway app and was under the impression Safeway delivers their own groceries. I was sadly mistaken Doordash apparently does. When I contacted the store to see why my groceries hadn't been delivered I was told my order wasn't there and the dasher canceled my order. When I said "so let me get this straight, the order I placed was stolen." The guy at the store told me well your order isn't here and the dasher canceled it. This was on July 29. I was told I would be issued a refund and wasn't. It's Aug. 8. Still no refund and I have had to file an incident report with SLPD. Safeway has done nothing to make this situation right. If anything they have treated me like im lying even though the app clearly shows the order was picked and ready to go but never delivered. I don't trust Safeway after this. read more

Safeway closest to home and yet I avoid it. I was reminded of why when I stopped in the other day in search of pancetta for a homemade minestrone. I found it in the deli area but also experienced the following: --two female clerks on break in the parking lot loudly discussing some personal drama and littering(including a glass Frappuccino bottle!) as they walked by --a self checkout clerk that didn't say hello or goodbye and seemed intent on her lottery Scratchers --a woman in a dark truck who held her hand to me in a stop gesture as she sped through the crosswalk I had just stepped into --a loudly grumbling woman who thumped her fist on my car as she shuffled by((I sat frozen in my front seat) --easily the worst torta I have ever tasted in my life: dry crumbly French roll, a jalapeno a sad faded green color which added no flavor to the bland pile of dry turkey slices. Folks complain that the Pak N Save on Washington is ghetto. Nope, this store and its frightening parking lot are the real mess. Thankful I didn't have my child with me. read more

I went to Safeway today. The good thing is there's always a lot of parking. The store is neat and organized. The wine and liquor section is pretty basic but not bad. However, the breads are all cheap and there's nothing good. Also, the meats (especially ham) are super low quality. The produce isn't bad but a little pricey compared to similar quality stores (looking at you 99 Ranch) and the tomatoes were pretty unfortunate. Good service. All in all not terrible if you're desperate but I just wish we had a better local butcher and bakery. read more

Good selections, friendly people, and convenient location for me. This was my go-to market to pick up groceries for me when I was living in San Lorenzo. This Safeway is located in the Greenhouse Marketplace which has a variety of stores (restaurants, banks, ice cream store, UPS, etc.) Since there are so many businesses at Greenhouse, parking is a mess during the weekends when people are eating at the restaurants. read more

However, the Deli in this location is the absolute WORST. They regularly only have one person working no matter how many people are lined up.. and then when you get up to the counter you find out they are out of so many things that they should NEVER be out of considering A) it's a Deli and B) the deli is located in a GROCERY STORE. today, as I write this waiting in line... I asked her for some chicken wings and if she could put it on the plastic containers instead of the paper bag and I'll pay for the container if I have to. She told me she doesn't have the small one. I love Safeway cakes. But this Safeway bakery was a HUGE disappointment. I had ordered a cake for my daughter's 2nd Birthday. Everything was okay EXCEPT the "2nd," well in their case "2th." I cannot believe the lack of knowledge the person that did my cake. So, after that experience, I should have learned from my mistake than to order from THEM again. So, I gave them another chance. My sister had me place an order. 3 small cakes (2 square and 1 circle). I repeatedly told the girl that I want "Happy" on one square cake, "Birthday" on the other square cake, and my daughters name on the circle cake. But that was a huge FAIL because she was not understand what I was trying to say. I was so glad someone took over. I looked at my order sheets and the girl cannot even spell BIRTHDAY! Racist checker at Safeway at 699 Lewelling Blvd. San Leandro CA. Please any Latins beware of Morgan or Megan she tried asking my Daughter in law for an ID after my Son who is 21 already gave his ID to buy alcohol. My Son is Latin but looks white and his fiancé is Latin and looks very beautiful and Latina. Morgan or Megan then took it a little further and wouldn't let her use our club card because she didn't have an ID when this checker asked her for an ID to use the club card wtf . I have never been asked to provide an ID to use my club card or when someone else is buying alcohol and not me be carded for that alcohol as she carded her also for that too and my Son was like "I gave you my legal ID to purchase it, it's my alcohol not hers" ! This has to stop that girl is a straight racist. We watched in the distance after we paid for our groceries and wasn't able to save by using our club card and she did not ask any other customers for an ID 3 customers later! I had a bad anxiety attack as I'm walking out the store from being totally embarrassed and PTSD was so high I felt dizzy. People were just staring at us in disbelief. One lady actually came up and said I'm so sorry you had to go through that to my Sons fiancé and to us. She also said that checker was being rude and racist and should not be able to work there. That what she did is illegal and I should get a lawyer. I put in a complaint at corporate about this incident. If this is not addressed we will be seeking legal counsel. read more

Out of ideas for lunch? Go over to Safeway. That's what i do when i don't know what to eat and I don't want fast food. Yes, i can just pick up some fried chicken or some mac n cheese from their deli counter but i can also pick up a fresh loaf of bread and a container or hummus. Then, there are the soups like tomato bisque and italian wedding soup. I come here on a regular basis, looking for variety. I can buy ingredients to create dishes or I can buy something that is pre-made or frozen. It's almost like my one stop shop, for food anyway. I like how the people are super friendly, however not as good looking and youg as the cashiers and baggers in the Davis Safeways. The only sad part is that i must look like i'm over 30 because i get barely ever get carded here. Damn THEM!! I'm young!! I still want them to ask for my ID. In fact, I always have it ready for them. This is my go to neighborhood store. It use to be the best Safeway but I believe that title now goes to either one of the two Safeways in Castro Valley. It is not as bad as the other ones in SL one on Washington Ave. (that I use to work at in high school long ago) and Bancroft. It is hit or miss coming here. Sometimes the bakery is stocked with fresh goodies and breads and sometimes not. The same goes for the produce department. Check out lanes are always busy no matter what time of day I come. I think they might always be short staffed for checkers and courtesy clerks. It takes forever to get out of here. Half of the employees seem like they don't mind being here and dealing with the public and the remainder don't want to be here at all. It is sad. Hardly anyone has a smile anymore. Make sure to check the dates on the lunch meats and cheeses. I have noticed expired dates more than a day or two past. I do let the dept. know, I don't want someone to get sick. The floral department always has beautiful fresh flowers. I usually pick up a bouquet from here and they last for a few days. The deli makes pretty good sandwiches. Try to avoid coming during the typical lunch time hours (12-1PM) there is a long wait. This store has a Starbucks which is always popular. They don't have a large selection of baked goods (don't expect the same selection as their locations) but they will have something available. On a good note there is plenty of parking since it is located in a shopping center. Be careful people don't seem to know how to drive here. Last note is that there is always someone outside asking for a donation or a signature for some petition. They are there and can't be avoided. I love the staff at this store and the Starbucks is the best around. If you want a perfect latte on a workday morning... Mary is your gal! Bryan is super kind and helpful in the morning. I often come shopping with my 4 year old son in the evenings and all the staff are warm and welcoming to us both. Rhonda always knows how to make my son smile. Bruce's patience with a whining child is amazing. He always is so kind as well. It is very conveniently located (right next to the freeway hub) and plenty of parking. The store is large and is almost always fully stocked with your favorites. Some customers have also told me that they travel to this Safeway from other cities for items that they can't find in their local Safeway. I don't think I can rave enough at how incredible Mary is in their Starbucks. She always has a smile on and works very hard to make every beverage perfect.
