I like this Safeway's cleanliness. It's a smaller store than the average stores. Specially reduced in size the produce, floral and household goods areas. But it's well compensated by its great staff and their friendly attitudes. The store is clean and neat, always. Parking is also small but you will not have a problem finding a spot. It is an older store and at times confusing. One day you will have one line to all registers the next all registers have their own line and most confusing of all two lines to all registers. It makes it a real competition to be next in line. Most stores that have one line have a guide to help direct the front end. I gave it two stars because there are some really nice people who work there but others will not say hello or thank you, customers seem a real bother to them. One busy day I was in line and somebody wanted to get by, I stepped aside ( 6ft clearance) and got a strong retort from the cashier to step back. Yet as I was bagging my goods she motion for the next customer to come up and started to ring him up. He was less then two feet from me. If I have to option to go to another store I will, do not like going to this one. Please retain a better management staff read more

I have never had a more frustrating experience in my life. They answer the phone and proceed to tell you their busy and your now the reason for their inadequate service. Service is what they have forgotten they are doing...or supposed to be doing. They are down right rude. Worse then Verizon and the DMV all mashed together into a complete nightmare. Texts tell you they have your prescription ready. Not true. They say on the phone if you can manage somehow by some miracle to get them to actually give you any information. This rediculous lady has texted me two times while writing this review because I got sick of her horrendous treatment of me on the phone and hung up while on hold so she could get the pharmacist to tell me what I was told on the phone. 3rd grade recess. I swear she is so completely inept that I have no idea when if ever I can receive a complete order from this place. My doctor calls in my pills every three months like clock work and then it takes a month to get them...no kidding!! I think that it would be faster walking to the moon!! If she just one time did something that wasn't out of SPITE I would not know what to do...that's how they work...when you get your pills is determined by how much you are to be punished by QUEEN SPITE THE PHARMACY DEVIL!! She was to busy to answer my questions but not to busy to demand to know l what other pharmacies don't do that she does after I said I needed to know when to come there again to get last montes supply that the SPITEMASTER withheld. What must the person who desperately needs to fire her be doing while she screws with your pills. I really do pray nothing serious happens that could be a repercussion of her actions. This is probably the worst Safeway I have been to in my life. The service in the deli is so slow and the workers are so lazy. When I came here to buy a case of beers and stuff for the beach, the cashier was a young kid probably a senior in high school. He didn't say hi. Didn't ask if we needed a bag. He was so slow and bagged my stuff by throwing it in the bag. His manager came up to him and spoke to him while he was with customers about how he needs to stop being on the phone and go faster. I felt that performance reviews are probably better left in the office than in front of the register and in front of customers... but that's just me. read more

I had planned on writing a detailed description of my time this evening in the Seventh Circle of Hell. However, after reading most of the one star reviews posted here, I see there's no need. Every terrible thing you read about this Safeway is absolutely true. It's actually pretty remarkable that some generic, corporate chain store can be this bad, for this long (one star reviews go back 10 years). I'm a little surprised by the amount of praise the staff have gotten in several one star reviews. They're alright . . . by and large . . . but to at least half of them, you're invisible. They'll cluster in small groups, with their backs to you, bitching about union issues or sharing funny stuff from their phones, while you wait to be noticed. You clear your throat a few times to indicate your presence and sincere desire to purchase something. You keep clearing your throat, longer and louder, until you leave the store with laryngitis. You go there some times because you forget just how bad it was the last time you were there. It's convenient (I work three blocks away from it). But, it's convenient like the Bataan Death March was convenient . . . for getting from Point A to Point B in a somewhat straight line . . . without the recollection that you'll die a thousand deaths along the way. Don't waste your time going here. I was trying to buy liquor and had my younger sister with me, as I was paying the cashier asked to see her I.D.? I told her she was not 21 and that it was for me and she said that she could not sell me it. I asked how I could possibly still purchase it then and she said there was no possible way. While I understand how these policies may help them not be held liable in other cases , it is beyond me especially when I explained the case to the cashier. Quite disappointing and waste of my time, not sure how this differs from a parent buying alcohol with their child present... will never return to this Safeway again. read more

This Safeway is NOT good.  I feel bad because the management and staff are nice but there are just super shady characters always hanging around outside and creeping into the store.  It's the closest to our house but a last resort.  They seem to have gotten the shaft in Santa Cruz while all the others got completely remodeled and are larger with more options.  I give it a 3 for effort knowing that it seems some is out of their hands. read more

Usually I am not shopping here, because I live on Westside and my house very close Safeway on Mission St.After I done with Staff of Life market, I cross over to get some thing from my list at Safeway, I was in and out quickly The men at checker talk to me like I am begging stuffs, so I confronted with him, during those times a women stand nearby jump in and tell me also point finger to Grocery Outlet market tell me I can shop there ! I told her WTF don't tell me what's to do, customer like me paid her salary, and if you a store manager you must do you work in a good manners, instead her attitudes to customer. Her name Angie or Angel and she must be removed or fire from her position. Entire Santa Cruz county all the Safeway stores I been visit all, but this location such a ghetto store, and manager such a low class and none professional back ground. Stay away from this location, so many great stores people can shop around this area like Staff of Life, Whole Foods, Shopper Conner, Grocery Outlet, even the Mexican Mercado workers more customer services than that women at Safeway on Morrissey . It's a Safeway. It's not as though I expected something special or unique. Just to be able to buy some things without that being an uncomfortable disaster. Too much to ask? Apparently at this Safeway yes. First I was buying some juice. A spent a few minutes picking one. Unfortunately a manager (I assume) was using that aisle to tell another employee they weren't behaving acceptably. Is there no where else that could be done? I was trying not to listen, but they were very close to what I was looking at and it was so uncomfortable I just decided forget the juice. Got a few things, checked out, but as soon as I stepped outside there was a pit bull tied up outside the store. It had a bunch of collars, spiked collars (not the decorative kind, the kind that go into the dog's neck). The dog was not in good shape, and the collard were clearly too tight. I wasn't sure there was much I could do to help the dog, I went to my car. Just as I got there the dog (100% no question on their property) started to bark and cry. So I went back into the store. First employee completely blew me off, sent me to "customer service." No one at customer service. The dog is loud enough you can definitely hear it from all of the checkout lines. Went to a checkout person with no one in her line. She asked if I was Ok. Had the dog perhaps scared me? Seriously? She thought I would come back into the store to tell them I was afraid of dogs? I'm a regular at the Safeway on Mission St., but visited this one since I was in the area and had yet to get my week's groceries. There are many reasons why I won't shop here again: - poorly-lit parking lot with loiterers who cat-called and shared their naughty thoughts - moldy fruits (oranges, strawberries, blackberries) - sad selection of produce (2 varieties of apples, 1 type of orange) - more expensive than the other Safeway?! - outdated 80's layout, sorely in need of renovation - puzzling entrance (one-person doorway each way) - insufficiently staffed I'm surprised an enterprise like Safeway would allow a store to fall below their norms in this manner. I live within walking distance of this Safeway, which is the ONLY reason I shop here. If I have the time, I will drive the 5 miles to the Safeway on 41st, because the shopping experience is galaxies apart from my neighborhood Safeway. Not sure why this particular store is the red-headed stepchild of the Santa Cruz Safeway family. Could be the customers can be a bit odd (probably including myself). Anyways, after shopping the new Mission location and the not-so-new-anymore 41st store, I always wonder the same thing when I find myself back at Morrissey: "What the hell am I doing here?" I'm usually in a hurry, so that's my answer and I'm stickin' to it. I can always find parking, however, and the staff is friendly, so I threw in an extra star for those saving graces. read more

This Safeway well - sucks. The selection of groceries here is not good compared to other locations. If you need someone to assist you generally staff is clueless or barely to be found. Also what sucks is that the store itself is just not very clean and organized. I don't bother with their deli counter as it does not look appetizing. Always long lines here because they're understaffed. I only come here if it's on the way and I did today. Regrettable decision. This is the Safeway that we always go to, not by choice, it's just the closest one to us where we live right now. It's extremely sketchy at night, you never know who is there, people on drugs, homeless, police arresting someone or being called because of a disturbance. The lines are not too bad, just don't go on the weekend, because then you'll be waiting forever, even though they have their not more than three rule. The clerks and employees are great, very friendly, and always helpful, it's just the general store and its location that is lacking. Yech, i will never shop here again unless it is an emergency. It is located on an awkward corner of water/soquel and morrissey and can be difficult to get in to the lot. Once you are in the lot, people have to park in tight places and aren't pleasant to drive around. This safeway is run down, low on selection, has the weirdest lay out and the employees I have encountered are odd to say the least. They don't really have any bargains so I don't see much reason why I wouldn't either drive all the way to the mission one on the west side or just pay the extra money at shopper's corner on this side of town. read more

Worst Safeway ever. at the Deli I waited to be helped and wasn't greeted for several minutes while 3 workers behind the counter were standing together talking to a customer and laughing- they were all obviously friends and only one of them needed to help her. Finally one of them came over to help me, I tried the potato salad- didn't like it. Then I tried the Italian pasta salad- wasn't feeling it either. The checkers tend to be OK, even nice. Besides that, there seems to be a systemic (managerial) problem. Today, I was first in line at a checkout post with its light on. We waited until an employee very curtly told us it was closed, and he shrugged his shoulders when I pointed out the light. No one came to replace the missing checker. Someone said the guy was a bagger, and the manager would speak to me if I insisted. I waited for over 20 minutes. No one came. Update (04/06/19): Checkout service was particularly bad this afternoon. Three young checkout ladies hung around privately chatting all the while, never even acknowledging me or the customer before me. Safeway on Morrissey. This my least favorite store to shop at on the central coast. It's grossly mismanaged and it shows in the attitudes of the employees. Always long lines (10-15) people, rarely more than 2 checkers. This store maintains a blatant disregard for the people who shop there. It is old, dirty and disorganized. Was there this morning at 9am (5/5/19) i waited 10 minutes waiting to get some items from the Deli. After 10 minutes, i walked over to the register area and the cashier paged for Deli service. After another 10 minutes, the cashier paged Deli again this time paging Kathy by name. Still nothing, at this point the bag boy, went to the back himself, he came back and said "the deli person is in the back doing stuff, she said it would be 10 to 15 more minutes." At this point i was so frustrated that i just left. "Kathy" clearly has no clue about customer service or about peoples time. So rude. Wasted almost 30 minutes just to leave empty handed. I only go here because I live one minute away from the Morrissey Safeway. This store gets worse with each visit. I don't understand why there are always 15 people in each line. Why hasn't Safeway figured out that they need more employees? They have baggers go around and hand out cookies and water to customers that have been waiting in line for 30 minutes. This Safeway seems to be struggling with staff, management and security. On Sunday (8/6/17) I was entering the parking lot and I noticed a gang of 'homeless' gathered around the Redbox machine. As I searched for a parking place, one of these fellows ran up to my car and threw himself onto my front fender then lay on the ground screaming that I had hit him. A second fellow came up to my drivers window and began beating on it, ordering me out of the vehicle. I took my time, not wishing to be a further victim of their scam. When I did get out of the car, both these fellows threatened me with violence, so I began calling 911. They both asked me to put down the cellphone, that $20 would settle things. A third fellow appeared and told them "He is old, quit picking on him!" As I began dialing 911, the two original players jumped on their bicycles and rode away quickly. The third player told me he deserved a reward for "Sticking up for me." No sign of security ever appeared. I got in my car and drove to the 41st Ave. Safeway, I will never shop at Morrissey Blvd. Safeway again. When I drove by that store on my way home from 41st Ave, the gang was back, hanging around the Redbox machine. read more

I do not shop for groceries here but do like that Santa Cruz still has one Safeway that has not turned into a store so big that I can count going there as my work out for the day! I do buy floral gifts here, as it is so easy to find a great selection of smaller potted flowers and balloons for every occasion. The staff in this department knows me pretty well : ) read more

My boyfriend just went in to buy us some pie and the security guard came up to him and stood in front of him, without saying anything, while my boyfriend tried to make his selection. this safeway feels like the one that the corporation forgot about. or it veered way to far in one direction that the company doesnt want to give it rules, because they know that the employees at this place wont listen. employees sometimes wear band t-shirts and sandals. (i have nothing against stores where employees can dress as they please, but this doesnt coincide with safeway at all) between 10pm and 12am there is one lane open and 30 customers trying to get random late night goods. from 11:45pm to 12:15 am they cant help anyone cause its switchover to the night crew, pretty sure they are missing normal foods here. like with 4 less aisles, they decided to only carry one type of rice. i feel like i am at some hermit crab grocery store that moved into the shell of a safeway, and they decided to leave the safeway sign up read more
