This 'Safeway' looks like the shittiest ghetto in hell opened up a grocery store on earth. I feel like I have to wear a flak jacket and carry a concealed weapon just to buy milk and bread. They always have food blocking the tiny little aisles. The produce looks like the leftovers from the nice Safeway on Mission. Last time I was here there was an old homeless man dropping a deuce in the toilet paper aisle. AND THE LINES ARE AWFUL, esp late at night. Worst chain grocery store in Santa Cruz. The only things this place has going for is a friendly staff, and location.

I do love this Safeway! I love the buy one get one free club card specials on strawberries and blueberries this time of year. Of course one can get those deals at any old Safeway, but you'll miss out on the neighborhood crazy charm that only exists at the Morrissey location. Yesterday while waiting in one of their notoriously long checkout lines I was treated to an impromptu comedy stand up show by Marshall! Marshall is this elderly gentleman who apparently wanders into Safeway a couple of times a week to pick up on the ladies with his old timey brand of standup. Safeway should hire him! Best waiting in line experience yet, sure beat reading the Enquirer. read more

A woman was knocked down in the parking lot at 2 p.m. this last week and her wallet was taken. The person in a red hood and red toyota car took off on Hwy 1 south. There is no security before 5 p.m. and the security guard is not someone who would scare a fly or could handle any real confrontation. The front sidewalks are filthy and need steam cleaning and in general the store is not the tidiest. The store is in need of updating...the sign so old it is faded.It doesn't feel like a corporate store that is tended to for uniformity of brand. The store is very small and not well organized on the shelves...There is little food...mostly non-food items...as others have reported there are not alot of organic or local brands. The neighborhood locals have stopped going to this Safeway and instead go to either Staff of Life almost across the street, or Whole Foods or even better Shopper's Corner down the way on Soquel Avenue and Branciforte. The store location is convenience off the freeway and yet it also draws many people from outside of the area and it is really a hit and miss experience in the store. The parking lost is not level so be aware of carts crashing into cars (including yours). As a local who lives blocks away, I stay clear from it. read more

The checkers are super slow especially this blonde girl nicole i went to get cat food one day and thats all . I was in line for 20 minutes and i was second in line. I felt too bad to leave since i was second but she was talking to the bagger saying go get prices he never even came back. When she was told to log off the computer and go home she argued with her coworkers and stood there after being told many times to leave i went home with anxiety it was the worst grocery experience ever i dont want to shop and go home with anxiety like that . The only thing going for this Safeway is the friendly staff. Though, if you're planning on giving your patronage to this store after about 9pm I suggest you invest in some self-defence classes or a concealed weapons permit because it gets very sketchy after dark. Try to get your shopping done earlier in the day and perhaps somewhere else. read more

Old, rundown, and ghetto. I only shop here for emergencies, I prefer the big Safeway on Mission St. I guess what set me off was the day they ran out of eggs. Who runs out of eggs? The employees are usually high on something, or college kids who have absolutely no customer service skills and talk amongst each other while checking out customers. It's quite depressing. read more

If it weren't for the fact that I live in very close proximity to this store, after multiple disappointments as a customer here, I would never have returned. Today I have decided that, despite how convenient it is to me location-wise, I will in fact not ever set foot in this store again. My main complaint with this particular Safeway, is its horribly inept pharmacy. Over the years that I've opted to use it because of it being virtually blocks from my home, they have continued to make errors of varying types with prescriptions I've had called in to them. The worst example was a few years ago when they dispensed another customer's prescription to me when I went in to pick up mine. They did not discover the mistake - I did when I got home and read the label on the vial. This type of blunder could obviously result in a life-threatening situation, and could also be grounds for a hefty lawsuit. Luckily for them, ( and me - with my life intact thanks to using my own powers of observation), neither of these scenarios came to pass. I felt for the pharmacist that day, and decided to be charitable in my reaction to their glaring error. However, I'm bringing it up again here now after another negative experience with this pharmacy today that's just feeling like the last straw for me. I won't be returning there, and I think other potential customers should be armed with this information, like I wish I had been before going there. My dog has a brain tumor, and takes medication to control the seizures that are caused by her disease. The medication must be given every day, and is the ONLY thing that stops the dramatic seizures she has from happening. Therefore, I am very diligent about requesting prescription refills well in advance of running out of the pills. I called in the refill request to this pharmacy one week ago, received a message from them notifying me that my prescription was ready for pickup 3 days after my call, and then went in two days later to pick it up. The technician seemed to be having difficulty finding my prescription, which was odd since they had called me saying it was ready. But after searching for awhile, she finally came back to tell me they actually had none of the drug available in their store, so they then tried to find it in another local Safeway to no avail, and were now going to look into finding it through their corporate distributor and would have to get back to me. This is a VERY common drug that is readily available, ( I work in veterinary medicine and have a degree of pharmacological knowledge. We're not talking about a rare medicine here. Unfortunately, its a human drug, and a controlled substance, so its supposedly easier to obtain through a human pharmacy - which is why I have to use one to get it for my dog). I told this clerk that she could forget it - I would just use a different pharmacy since my dog can't wait and have a bunch of seizures while they're busy trying to locate the drug. The technician was utterly unapologetic in any way, and just shrugged at me in a sort of "Oh well" fashion. I'm left wondering when exactly did they know they didn't have the drug in stock, and why they didn't call to tell me so during the entire week that passed between when I requested it and when I took time from my day off work to go pick it up? Again; THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT IT WAS READY FOR PICKUP. I ARRIVED THREE DAYS LATER TO PICK UP. Why did I find this out after standing in line at their *&%$#@& counter?? My dog now has two days worth of her meds left, while I scramble to locate a ( BETTER ) pharmacy that can actually fill her prescription in time. For those who would ask why I would have gone back to Morrissey Safeway Pharmacy after they previously almost drugged me with someone else's pills? I am definitely asking myself that same question, ( while vigorously kicking myself at the same time)! Its right down the street from my home, but I will gladly drive out of my neighborhood to use a more reputable business from now on instead. read more

Real low on the Awesome scale This safeway is incredibly old and run down. I have had no bad experience with the staff but the general tidiness and state of the facility is pretty bad. Canned food askew, veggies old and not well presented, no butcher shop or bakery, these are the typical things you will find when you head over to this safeway. However getting into the safeway may be a bigger issue. To get in you have sneak your way past the homeless people who are always there asking for food or money. There is also a decent amount of drug activity in the parking lot. YES safeway is a one stop shop for those of you looking to for a good time on a Sat night. Get your liquor and your illegal drugs all in one place. But if you are an average joe not looking to score a hit and just want to grab some quality food head to one of the many options down the street. This is the lowest rated safeway I have gone to. read more

This is a decent place to get basic groceries, but beware the poor grocery bagging skills of some of the checkers. I've come home with delicate items on the bottom of the bag, cracked open from the weight at the top of the bag (yogurt) or smooshed (bread). To top it off, I brought home a jar of tomato sauce that had its "safety button" already popped (probably by someone who opened it in the store). The produce is often found at the almost overripe/moldy stage and some of the plants being sold are mite-infested. If you're looking for fresh food without the risk of having to return things, go to whole foods or staff of life. They willingly accept returns, but it's a waste of time to have to return something that should have been right the first time. read more

I wish I could leave less than one star. Lets start with the parking lot, filthy. The carts are filthy, the entrance at the doors are scummed with dropped food and there are birds trying to get the garbage. The store did not feel safe, the parking lot had a lot of lurking folks and many of the vehicles looked like they had been parked there for weeks, with folks living inside them. Why not just close this store, and we can just go to Mission St, or 41st. Why would anyone want to shop here. The frozen foods, are caked with ice due to poor refrigeration. The staff look exhausted, I could go on and on and I won't, lets just summarize that I will not go to this store again. It is a shame, I live in the neighborhood. Because I go through spells when I can't afford to buy my Strauss Family milk, or my locally grown meats, OR my additive free cheese/granola/delicious foods from Shopper's Corner, I sometimes have to go buy Safeway brand for my basic needs. I don't like it, but I go here instead of Safeway on Mission because I'm less likely to run into anyone, it's slightly closer to my home base, and I kind of like being around the really shade clientele. Besides for the food being very Safeway-esque, which I dislike to begin with, this one time I needed pearl onions for beef bourguinon, and when I came home with my onions they were ALL MOLDY! I couldn't tell when I bought them because they were in that dark webbing stuff that makes it tough to see things like mold on onions. Anyways, I returned them and EVERY pack of pearl onions was completely molded. At least their chicken strips are fresh. read more

This Safeway always Fails me. I think its probably the worst ones I've been to. Low on vegetables and low on the variety of items stocked. Oh. They ran out of meat one time. I think I'll add that if I still have it. I'm Serious. There was Not one single kind of meat there. No beef, chicken, pork- not that I wanted pork. Or even Fish. So sad. I went here 2 weeks ago and there was no chicken breasts. There was organic, but my crazy farmer friends keep saying its just expensive hype. So I paid extra since there was nothing else. read more

It's a good Safeway and has food like every other Safeway. I really like isle number 9 because it has great specialty beverages, soft drinks, flavored beverages, sports drinks and water. All of which are good things to drink. Other grocery stores have bleach on isle 9 which is NOT OK to drink. Great job Safeway read more

I would like to start off by saying that Carolyn is probably my favorite cashier ever! She is always friendly, polite and helpful- I always try to jump in her line when I can and when I see her around town we exchange a pleasant "hello". Unfortunately, most of my interactions with other employees at this store have not been as pleasant. My main concerns come from the times I have used WIC checks here. I know that WIC has different procedures that may be more complicated than paying with cash, cards or even regular checks, but in my experience there seems to be a lack of training in proper procedures for the program. My cashier today seemed to be new, and didn't know how to ring up with the WIC checks. I waited while she switched places with another cashier, who rolled her eyes when she was called over. This particular cashier who came to ring me up has displayed similar behavior when I have paid with WIC in her line before- eye rolls and a lack of communication with me other than asking me to sign the check. She gives me the checks to sign before writing the amounts on them or checking my WIC folder (proper procedure to confirm identity and prevent fraud). When I asked her about this she said to "just sign them now because I was holding up the line." I am in communication with my WIC office about my experiences. I feel that lessons on proper WIC procedures as well as proper customer service and communication would be very beneficial for this store. read more

In the pharmacy, the elderly gentleman takes care to explain things and is careful. Some of the younger women who work there are incredibly careless and unintelligent. They will make multiple accounts for a customer, never looking to see when an Rx comes in if the patient has an account already. This causes a lot of time lost in getting your prescriptions; and billing for no insurance, which a certain percentage of people will perhaps pay without realizing they are being ripped off. When you call and explain your problem and ask to for advice on how the medical office can be clear enough to avoid the staff's tendency to make a second account when it is a refill that is being prescribed, they cannot comprehend or follow what you are talking about and play dumb. read more

Unbelievably rude and ill-informed and to the point where I was actually being threatened. The staff at Safeway told me that the night-crew was here and that I'm not leaving building I thought that my car was going to be towed. If I had the means and the time, I would actually like to sue this particular company. Also I have seen by shopping in this area that, one should always go to The Grocery Outlet across the street first and because they usually have prices that are nearly half of what Safeway charges and you can save a lot of money. This review is based on the deli. We went to the deli to grab sandwiches before heading the beach. We waited at the counter till we were finally noticed by Inis. I ordered first, requested wheat with peppered turkey and mayo only. Super simple sandwich- I know! She left to find the mayo, came back 3 minutes later and I ultimately received a mayo sandwich with 2 slices of turkey. My girlfriends didn't get anything better. She actually told them they were out of pepper turkey and then realized the package of it was still out from making mine and she never put it back. Every item requested was supposedly "out" because she didn't want to locate it. Another worker finally pointed everything out. We had to purchase a separate pack of turkey to put on the sandwich ourselves so we were eating only bread. When complaining to the cashier, the response was that they would tell management. No resolve. Will not be coming back to this Safeway for any of my shopping needs. I do not understand how someone that's only job is to greet customers and complete their sandwich order is so complicated. She moved like a snail, acted like we were bothering her and didn't have any customer service skills. How do people keep employment that treat customers this way is beyond me!
