Simply put, this is the worst Safeway I've ever been to. It's small, cramped, and always a combination of busy and short-staffed. Even with a handful of items and the express lane, expect to wait 10 minutes or more to check out. Maybe they just don't have enough employees? After work and on weekends there always seems to be 3 or 4 cahiers for a store that gets a TON of traffic. Automated checkouts would be a huge help here. Unless you're in a serious hurry, it's worth it to drive to another local Safeway for your groceries. read more

it's small. the entire produce section somehow seems to be slightly wilted. the ambience is that of an older, outdated grocery store from the 80s. but despite all its shortcomings, it's the most convenient safeway location to me, so i continue to frequent it. doesn't mean i have to like it though. read more

I hate this Safeway; too bad the one in the Countrywood Shopping Center is so far away. The employees at this Safeway are ghetto and leave something to be desired when it comes to customer service. The three star review mainly has to do with location. I can literally walk to my neighborhood Safeway and usually find what I am looking for. There has been more than one incident, however, where they seem to be consistently out of a particular salsa or dip that I like. Maybe a subliminal message that I shouldn't be stuffing my fat ass with such salty, cheesy, tomatoey goodness??? We'll it's 1am and I am suffering from 4th Meal-itis. I gots to handle that. So I get disappointed. Also, and I'm not sure why this is, but this particular Safeway has like the worst version of Starbucks you can go tho. The baristas seem to be working as slow as molasses and they might f*** up your cup of coffee as well. But there is an interesting crop of checkers, especially at night. Plus some decent eye candy struttin around the store. Overall it is a one=stop shop where you can get pretty much anything. Except for Target. Target has Safeway ponwed. No one beats Target. The only thing of note about this Safeway: it is the "singles safeway" due to the close proximity to the apartment complexes up the hill. I live closer to the "mommy safeway" on Ygnacio, but for you single lads and lasses, the Broadway safeway is the way to go. Seriously. read more

This Safeway may have the longest lines ever. I try hard to avoid going here if I only need one or two things because the 10+ minute wait in line is not worth it. I do like the new layout of the produce aisle so that's a plus. The sandwiches from the deli are just average. If you live in Pleasant Hill or Concord or on the border of Walnut Creek Pleasant Hill go to the Safeway next to Sun Valley Mall this is the best Safeway I have ever been to plus there is gas. read more

Helpful and friendly staff. This is like a mini Safeway and doesn't have a lot of things. No coffee grinder, no express Chinese, no nail polish....the list goes on. It is Safeway, so, you know, they have everything Safeway has. As a big bonus, they have a lot more organic and health options, which would earn a higher ranking, however, there is ALWAYS a huge line. I mean always. If it is evening, the registers are open, but packed. If it is day, the registers are closed, except the 2 packed ones. If it is 1 am, the one register is packed. It is killer. Seriously, I have started avoiding this place if I can help it, which is sad, because I support Union goods, and Safeway is unionized. read more

Customer service is always horrible at this Safeway: Always. Even the manager. She was stocking shelves while on her cell phone talking to her boyfriend. I didn't notice she was on the phone because she was holding it on her ear facing away from me. I asked her where something was and she told her boyfriend to hold on, kept him on the phone and talked as she made me follow her to the spot. Also many of the checkers are severely unpleasant. Finally, echoing some of the other Yelpers the aisles are way to small. Replying to one of the other yelpers who says reviewing grocery stores doesn't matter they are all crowded and blah blah blah; I too, never thought I'd review a grocery store until every visit was like "wow this place really sucks and they don't give a damn". Very well kept and great customer service. I had come here for a western union after being let down by 3 other providers and they told me it was closed. However, I told them my story and thry made an exception. They were also very empathic to my son who was being an extremely irritated toddler. I like that they do not share a parking lot as well. read more

i love this safeway all but one employee (the red head manager which slapped my food (eggs too!) into bags when i was checking out with her 11pm or so) are awesome, the rest of the employees and mangers always greet me and others any time they walk by them, they are helpful and with great attitudes, the store is a little tight especially when its busy (5pm or so) bring your own bag :) ! read more

While I shop here once or twice a week, I dread actually going. The aisles are so narrow, you can barely fit two shopping carts side by side. I always end up parking my cart at the end of an aisle and threading my way through the masses, piling up everything I need in my arms and taking it back to the cart. Too often I have been stuck in traffic jams on aisles. Their overall stock is limited. For example, they don't have nearly the variety of ethnic foods that the Alamo and North Walnut Creek Safeways have. And while some may suggest that we should not rate the market on the clientele, I almost jumped all-over a Rossmoor-ish lady who told my daughter and friend to "Move it, girls!" when they were just looking at the toy machine. It's a small store, lady! Say "Excuse me, girls" and set a good example, grumpy old hag! In the end, good to get your necessities, but head to Alamo for a full shopping cart kinda day. read more

This Safeway is fine. Neither here nor there. There are some bad people to check out with, but you wouldn't know until you have suffered through the 3 mins of the cash/credit transaction. I like to come to this Safeway early on a Sunday, but know that later on a Sunday all the WC moms come out to re-stock their food pantry's. Another painful shopping adventure in the safeway where the employees complain loudly about other customers in front of the customers who have waited 9 deep in line because the customers are interrupting their gossip time. NEVER EVER buy a gift card at Safeway!!!! I was giiven a gift card that was not activated properly and have been trying for 4 WEEKS to get it resolved. It was a Home Depot card. Home Depot shows the card was never activated and Safeway shows it has never been used, but I can NOT get them to isse me a new card. I have talked to everyone from the assistant store manager to a very rude woman in their customer service and still can not get this handled. Now it is with their FRAUD unit and they can not tell me when it will be resolved. I am fully expected to have to go to Safeway again because no one at the company can call me back and be told that there is nothing they can do. So DO NOT EVER BUY GIFT CARDS AT SAFEWAY. THey do not stand behind what they sell and will not help you get it resolved. read more

Could they have longer lines? Every time I come here, there's a line 6 people deep and no more than one or two checkers open. The people that work there are not friendly. Not rude either, just not very customer servicey. I like other Safeways, as I've been to probably 15 of them, but this one has the longest lines, even at night. I have decided to shop elsewhere because they refuse to hire more employees. I also went here to send something Western Union, and it took over 15 minutes before an employee came to help me. The lines are usually a pain and then to top it off, we actually found ourselves in the middle of a co-worker argument! One bald male cashier called us over to his lane giving the reason as his female hispanic co-worker was the slowest cashier there! It wasn't her fault as the register was malfunctioning. I love this Safeway. It's one of the smaller ones but very nice. I really only have one issue with it and that is the deli dept. They are EXTREMELY slow. I have never been able to get out of the deli with a sandwich in a short period if time even if there is no line. Sandra an employee who works there decided to skip over me and ring up the employee that was in line behind me. Very poor service at the deli but the rest if the staff is nice. read more

Normally wouldn't bother to rate a Safeway store, but this place is interesting. Sure, it is a bit smaller than other Safeways, but it is located downtown. Selection may be a bit less than the bigger stores, but the service levels are very high. It seems like the staff can read my mind when I stare blankly at a shelf looking for something -- someone always asks me if they can help. And, when I am looking for something that is not in front of me, they actually lead me to the correct location. Cashiers are also very friendly. And, they are open 24 hours a day! read more

Like usual, long lines and either friendly but talkative (ie SLOW) checkers or just plain slow ones. The outgoing ones seem to really enjoy their jobs but unfortunately they tend to stop working while they are talking. I also wanted to mention that Safeway has some great pre-packaged bakery items great for groups or game day-cookies, donuts, muffins, French bread, etc...BUT 80% of the time they are overcooked! The few days I've been lucky enough to find soft baked cookies or moist muffins, they were delicious! I will never buy them the other days (I tried once & the cookies were as hard as a rock, & everything else was so dry). I wish there was more consistency (& checkers)! read more

Ordered a burrito from the deli. The women working was extremely rude and would interrupt me every time I was ordering in order for her to do it her way. This caused her to mess up all 3 burritos I ordered and exclude cheese and sausage from 2 of them. I was born and raised in the area and have been going to this Safeway since its existed. And I just want to say that during this time of the virus, I'm amazed on their constant ability to go above and beyond. I'm writing this review based on my experience that I had yesterday. I had gone there shopping for the week and had accidentally left my phone at the self check out. I had gone home and been there looking for over an hour before I realized it was gone. I knew i had left it at the store because it was the last place I had been before I went home. I rushed back hoping that it hadn't been stolen by a passerby. I went to customer service and thankfully they had it locked up in the back room and had wiped it down for me. During this time, a lost phone is a store's last worry, but the fact that they put effort to clean it and keep it safe for me at a busy time of day made me so happy and reinsured me how great this location is. Thank you to the employees who made it so that my phone got back safely to me! read more

This place employs one of the best sandwich makers around. If you see Amir, i believe that is his name, have him make your sandwich, they are like works of art. I work in Pleasanton and when I went to the Safeway over there, the deli personnel just slapped together the things and the sandwich sucked. I went to change my cash for dollars in the coin machine. We finished shopping and went to check out and i gave her my recipt for 53.25, and she only gave me 33.25. We got home and i looked at it. So we went back and they said it was evened out and they could not give me my 20 bucks. This place SUCKS! Dont ever use the change machine and if you do make sure to check that they gave you the right amount. read more

Terrible customer service. I'm a 35 year customer of Safeway, and I was humiliated for half an hour and treated with suspicion, all because I tried to pay by check rather than with a credit card. No one explained what the issue was, no one cared that I have a club card, no one asked to see a driver's license, no one even made eye contact with me as they chanted over and over, " you're not in the system so we can't take your check".
