This place employs one of the best sandwich makers around. If you see Amir, i believe that is his name, have him make your sandwich, they are like works of art. I work in Pleasanton and when I went to the Safeway over there, the deli personnel just slapped together the things and the sandwich sucked. I went to change my cash for dollars in the coin machine. We finished shopping and went to check out and i gave her my recipt for 53.25, and she only gave me 33.25. We got home and i looked at it. So we went back and they said it was evened out and they could not give me my 20 bucks. This place SUCKS! Terrible customer service. I'm a 35 year customer of Safeway, and I was humiliated for half an hour and treated with suspicion, all because I tried to pay by check rather than with a credit card. No one explained what the issue was, no one cared that I have a club card, no one asked to see a driver's license, no one even made eye contact with me as they chanted over and over, " you're not in the system so we can't take your check". Its a Safeway....like all the others, except this one is a little smaller than most. Good produce department with fresh fruit and veggies and a fair amount of organic items. Ordered a burrito from the deli. The women working was extremely rude and would interrupt me every time I was ordering in order for her to do it her way. This caused her to mess up all 3 burritos I ordered and exclude cheese and sausage from 2 of them. I was born and raised in the area and have been going to this Safeway since its existed. And I just want to say that during this time of the virus, I'm amazed on their constant ability to go above and beyond. I'm writing this review based on my experience that I had yesterday. I had gone there shopping for the week and had accidentally left my phone at the self check out. I had gone home and been there looking for over an hour before I realized it was gone. I knew i had left it at the store because it was the last place I had been before I went home. I rushed back hoping that it hadn't been stolen by a passerby. I went to customer service and thankfully they had it locked up in the back room and had wiped it down for me. During this time, a lost phone is a store's last worry, but the fact that they put effort to clean it and keep it safe for me at a busy time of day made me so happy and reinsured me how great this location is. Thank you to the employees who made it so that my phone got back safely to me! read more

I never have felt the need to review of grocery store but this one deserves it. This is the single WORST grocery store in the history of history. Regardless of when I go to this store they never have more than 1-2 checkers even when the lines are 5-10 people long and go down the isles, And believe me the lines are 5-10 people long almost every time I've been here. If you don't have a good 30-45 min to kill don't even bother walking in the doors of this place. Poor management seems to be the issue here. I avoid going here as much as possible, but sometimes necessity dictates I must give these schmucks my money so I can eat. This is the worst managed Safeway I have ever seen. If this Safeway were not in downtown Walnut Creek it would have shut down a long time ago. I've been to this Safeway several times now and it's always the same. There's 1 or at most 2 checkers open and at least 10 people in each line. One time I came here and they had 1 checker open and the line went all the way to the back of the store. And then add to that they have the slowest checkers I've ever seen. It's like they all just smoked a fat doobie. And then I don't get why this Safeway never has anything in stock. I mean seriously, the shelves are literally empty and it looks like they're going out of business and having a liquidation sale. No joke. I highly recommend just spending a couple of extra minutes (which will actually save you time considering the lines) and just go down to the Alamo Safeway which is 10 times better. read more

Even though it takes forever to checkout at this store I still have gone here for years for my grocery shopping because of its pricing. That has all ended once the manager or who ever is the head of security thought I stole something and followed me around store and then waited for me to check out. The most outrageous lines - always! It seems like no matter what time of the day, this Safeway is not staffed during peek times to accommodate fast - or even reasonable checkout. At one point they were advertising something about no more than 3 guests in a line. No exaggeration, the lines at 7:30pm are mid-way down the aisles of the check lanes! Oh my lawwwddd, this Safeway! Lines so long sometimes, I feel like I'm in a breadline in Communist Russia. I do shop here from time to time *only* because of the location. If this store was not conveniently located, I promise you no one would shop there. But let's talk about the most horrifying aspect of this Safeway: the bathroom! Disgustingly filthy. FILTHY. I have young kids, and sometimes we have a potty emergency at the store. My kids will not use this bathroom. It's so dirty, and, on the two occasions that we did -- under duress -- use it, there was no soap. Mind you, the employees use this bathroom. So, ummm, how are they washing their hands? And if a bathroom that is seen by customers is this dirty, what does the back of the store look like? I shudder to think. I think whoever runs this store figures they've got the business because of their location, so why even bother? Why not be filthy? Why not have three registers open and fifteen people in each line? (and yes, I've seen that at this store! Lines that went halfway down the frozen food aisle. What?!) Why bother being a decent store if people are going to shop there anyway? What a bummer. read more

I usually really like shopping at Safeway, but the Downtown Walnut Creek location is terrible. The people working here are nice enough, but they never have enough registers open, and even though this store is smaller than the average Safeway, it some how doesn't seem as clean as other Safeway stores I've been too. Even though this is the closes Safeway for me, I sometimes find myself going out of my way to go to the Alamo or Lafayette location. read more

There is never a time when there is not a line there. This morning they had just two checkers and 10 people in line. The express lanes were not open so I had to stand behind someone with a full cart. They finally opened another line and the manager grabs two random people out of the other line. It should not take 15 -20 minutes to check out when you have 3 items.....unacceptable. I gave it one more star because the people seemed reasonably pleasant. It's quite obvious this place is poorly managed and I would go to another chain, but Safeway has cornered the market in the east bay. I've seen the roller coaster that the Walnut Creek Broadway location has been. It went from horrifying--the former salad bar had food that was turning sour and plenty of flies--to enjoyable--pretty good produce, balanced prices, good employees--then heading back the other direction. During the period that I liked it I came to know many of the employees on a first name basis and they knew my daughters. I shopped there for over ten years. They saw my girls grow up. Over time many of those employees bailed. I ran into them at other Safeway stores and they all said they didn't like the Broadway store. The ones that stayed didn't seem to have the same spark. The new ones? OMFG, I can only say some of the most uncaring, oblivious grocery clerks I've ever had to deal with. When they can't even lift up their heads and say "Hello" when you walk past them or walk up to the register, then you know that you're not getting good service. Or managers that walk by you three times in a visit and greet you like they just saw you for the first time. One checker had the audacity, after I'd stood in line at the only open check stand late at night for over 20 minutes, to say when I got to him "SIR!, this is 12 item limit", with a very, very snotty tone, two seconds after they opened another lane. I vehemently disputed his position. One of my daughter's would tell you that I got in his face and told him to have sex with himself. I maintain that I opposed his position with a very ardent counter position to the point of his relent. He then rang up my 15, yeah 15, items. Other customers and employees were well aware of our dispute and took leave of their transactions to listen and peruse our confrontation. Complaints to corporate has had mixed results. I had several times emailed praising their improvements and the employees that I saw and treated me, with the due courtesy and service that is befitting a business. Regarding the little tale previously I received a swift reply because apparently other store employees that knew this little piece of stuff's behavior took my side. Apparently his customer service skills were consistently at the level that he offered me. He wasn't there much longer. (I was told by insiders that he was suspended.) But that's about the time it went off track completely. Recently I had an incident that I took up with the Pleasanton HQ that was simply addressed with "We appreciate your input. Hey, this is what's on special!" I asked for a regional manager's response and got "We appreciate your input. Hey, this is what's on special!" One of my comments in the email was "I think that there's a lack of care" and they proved that. I never heard from a regional manager. Nor a store manager. I feel really bad for the employees that saw my kids grow up. We discussed lives and work. We saw ups and downs, and much more. To see some of them endure such a stupid management core saddens and appalls me. They, the employees, get paid well but that's not always the most important thing. Dignity is a good thing. I think that Safeway's Board of Directors, upper and middle management is incredibly inept. I do not give any more of my money to Safeway. read more

They don't change staffing numbers for anything. Rarely enough cashiers or staff on in the deli. Friendly goes far but staffing will win out or lack of it. June 6, 2015. I was completely traumatized when I witnessed two plain cloths security guys use excessive force to apprehend a teenaged boy, who apparently was caught shop lifting. They tackled him in the parking lot, and he flew through the air and landed near my car and screamed for me to help him and call the police which I did immediately. I called the Walnut Creek police later and found out he had been arrested. I don't know if this young man was homeless, and hungry, or just steeling to do it. Either way the two security officers in my opinion used excessive force, and violence. I am completely disgusted that Safeway allowed the contracted security to behave in this manner. Someone else could have been seriously injured during the chase and take down in the parking lot. The young man could have been run over by a car backing out, and came close to slamming his face into the rear bumper of the car he landed behind when they tackled him. The attitude of the Walnut Creek police upset me as well, I wish they had been as serious about the theft of our truck three weeks ago, when they found it smached three miles from our apartment. The officer I spoke with seemed a little too smug that the young man had been arrested. I feel very sad tonight, I feel this incident could have been handled with more thoughtfulness. read more

I will drive to Orinda or Alamo most days before coming here and I live next door. Rarely I decide to pick up something here and immediately regret it. 20 minute check out lines - lines wrapping around the registers into the aisles behind them. People leave their carts and baskets in line to hold their place and go off continuing their shopping! What on earth. It's total chaos. 5:30pm on a weekday, 2 regular registers and 1 15 item register. Store packed, aisles blocked with carts of people with zero self awareness, parking lot full. If you desire some sort of personal punishment this is the place for you. read more

First off I can find what I need here at this store...parking a bit tricky but over all the idiots who shop at Nordstroms across the street shouldn't park here....but overall its pretty busy most parts of the day...so if u think its goin to be a quickie...ya right in and out...not going to happen...the employees do what they can with what they got and the stuck up people who come in expecting to be treated like gods...well get it right I shop here and most of the people are stuck up and rude...RUDE....I take my time to shop to get what I need for lunch, dinner, ect. This is by far the worst Safeway I've ever been to in my entire life. I'm so grateful I never have to go again. I lived around the corner for over a year and frequented it for the sheer face that it was located 2 blocks away. Honestly, in the year I went there, I don't recall a single time I ever left happy. First of all, the clientele is mostly, how do I put this delicately...well past the age of retirement. Therefore, prepare for slow moving aisles, people who still write checks for groceries, and the parking lot from hell. On the staff side, they all seem miserable and have no problem showing it. Almost all are in dire need of customer service training, they talk trash about each other, move at a glacial pace, and are just generally not pleasant to deal with. To be fair, I think it's a problem with management and the rest just rolls down hill. I complained once to a manager (a very tall African Amercan lady) and she seemed like she could care less. I used to go to the sandwich area quite a bit and it was always a nightmare. If there was even one customer ahead of me, it automatically meant the next 20 minutes of my life were consumed in that store. And, on top of that, the sandwich section was almost always out of something or other. Also, the store seems to get a pretty steady night crowd (I wait tables so would get off late and pop in for a bottle of wine or to grab some groceries for dinner) and they are always understaffed. The only time I was ever in-and-out of that store in less than 10 minutes was when I'd get quarters for laundry from customer service. The butcher, Eric or Nick cant recall, tall guy, on Christmas Eve would not help me. I am poor so i went to the "Manager Discount" in the meat section...saw a small piece of thin rib-eye that was 30% off dated tomorrow, the 25th. I also saw other red meat dated Dec 26 and Dec 27th with 50% off. so i asked the meat man if he would bring it down to 50% off for me as i am poor and would like to have it to eat on Christmas day. He would not and scolded me saying that if he did it for me, then everyone would be asking him to do it. Usually in other Safeway, esp in the Christmas spirit, the butcher would be more than happy to put a 50% off sticker on it since the others all had 50% off and this small piece was the only one with only 30% off on it. Could not believe his coldness. The nice Filipino manager did give me the 50% discount at register and said he would talk to him, but it doesn't diminish the sting of that rotten meat butcher who was so arrogant. He is getting paid but acts with entitlement. read more

This Safeway by far is the worst safeway ever! They always run out of everything and the variety of items is limited. It's always busy, even the express check-out lines take forever. The florists stink, they just wrap tissue paper around the base of the flowers and tie a bow around it. And the staff in general aren't very courteous. We went into the store today and when at the deli getting some sliced cheese, we asked if we could have some "freshly sliced cheese" because the ones in the case looked like they had been out all day- the lady working there told us that it was freshly sliced and they had been sliced that day (at what time?! 6 am?!- it was 7 pm when we went). She didnt even make an effort. Then we asked for some of their potato wedges, which they apparently were "out of." What kind of deli is that? Another time we went to get milk and eggs... they were SOLD OUT! How do you sell out of milk and eggs?! Its like they are too lazy to re-stock their items. The fruits and vegetables available aren't even fresh- you can't even get a decent looking onion or one for a decent size! When I go to a different grocery store, I can see the BIG difference. It's sad though because they just went through a renovation and you would think that since its SAFEWAY and its the local grocery store in Walnut Creek that it would be bigger and nicer and the staff would be great along with the service and products.... not the case at all. We are locals and we have to drive further out just to go to the grocery store for something that should be available a Safeway. They need a new management team to come in and take over. They need to clean up shop! Walnut Creek doesn't deserve a Safeway like this! read more

I live two blocks from this Safeway, and I will travel to Alamo or Bancroft to shop. This Safeway is not managed well -there are few cashiers and long lines down the food aisles at any time of the day. It is very frustrating and no way to treat customers. This is not a new phenomenon, but has been going on for some years. I would think management would want something other than a neighbor thinking, "Oh no, I need something, but there is no way I am going to my neighborhood Safeway!"
