I went to do a bigger shopping. I went in mid afternoon on Monday. The produce wasn't fresh. The whole produce department Looked like it wasn't freshly stocked. Old produce. Picked over. I wanted to buy fresh flowers. It looked like they didn't get a new shipment of flowers either. I didn't buy flowers. Is this a management issue? Management dropped the ball? Not organized? I don't know. I bought a pack of the Safeway brand chicken. Looked like they use old chickens. I had to throw one breast away. Others were tough because they use OLD chickens! Cashiers don't look professional. They should look clean and presentable. This is not the case. Baggers are mentally handicapped. They throw my expensive groceries in the bags with no regard. They make some bags so heavy that I struggle to lift them and they don't make good use of the bags I bring! Prices are ridiculously expensive. Management needs to step it up big time. I should've checked the ratings before walking into this Safeway. Probably the worst Safeway's out in the Bay! I walked in at 10:57 to grab one thing after working a dreading 13 hour shift and was literally told by a group of employees that I can't be in here because they're closed. I get it. 11pm you're closed but walking in and I'm still seeing some people shopping? I'm confused. If you would've offered to help me with anything or would've just said, "Hi, sorry we're closing" then yeah I would understand. No apologies or anything. Me and my girlfriend just moved here and had to do the ritual of going to the market we avoided it for a while LOL. When you first walk in the carts are right in front which I do appreciate. The inside of the market is actually very organized especially the front where the flowers are everything was easy to find. The employees were actually very nice to us, the only reason I give it a 4 star is because the bakery is always closed or at least when I always go. read more

I just came in, and ordered sushi from the deli. I was looking for a specific platter. Kim asked me right away, if she could help me with anything, and if i'd like her to make me something. This rating is only for the pharmacy and not the grocery store, which I shop at for groceries regularly. I have had some decent experiences at the pharmacy. Overall, I am disappointed in the lack of good customer service. I have had issues with getting prescriptions filled in a timely manner or having to go to another pharmacy because they did not have a particular (common) medication. Recently, I stopped in and asked about vaccines and was told they could order the vaccines I needed and it would be in within a couple days. I called back and was told they did not order them because the particular vaccine comes in a pack of eight and as I only needed two shots, they did not want to order the vaccine. read more

I tend to avoid this Safeway. Too many problems here! The shelves tend to be empty of basic staples, while the check out lines seem to be full of shoppers patiently waiting to purchase their items. Employees *try* to be helpful, but they end up just saying, sorry, they didn't get a shipment. No one seems to staff the flower stall nor the customer service desk unless they are paged. The parking lot is perpetually full and drivers are trying to get in and out of the lot as quickly as they can (no doubt after waiting in the interminably long lines!) Since it's located downtown across the street from a multitude of apartment complexes, both new and old, no amount of calls to improve will make a difference -- if this is the only grocery store within walking distance! read more

It seems that Corporate office of Safeway doesn't understand the issue of long lines at this location. There are always long lines here, regardless the time of the day or the day of the week; typically when we shop my wife goes to stand in line as soon as we come in and I run around the store picking up items, and even with this plan we get to spend 5-10 minutes in line, wth Safeway Managment. Quit rolling Dubies in the back and hire more cashiers! + open more registers. Take your job seriously, analyze your tragic flow, otherwise I am going to keep going to Sprouts or Whole Foods. This used to be a good store but now I think it must not be a good store to work for anymore because they can't get anyone to work there anymore. One cashier today for a line of 30 people. Finally, the customer service clerk was kind enough to open a register and check herself so then still only 2 checkouts open though. Must find a better store that has everything now. Did an impromptu shopping trip here the other day. I was making dinner for some friends and thought I could get more variety here rather than my local Maritnez Safeway. I seemed to forget how crazy busy this store is. Twice I went to stand in line then decided to go walk around once more just wait and see if the line died down. It never did. The aisles are small in comparison to my home Safeway, which I forgot about. There are some things that I can get here but not at home. Then theres things that they don't have. Like a good variety of yogurts. I couldnt get my Key Lime Pie Yoplait! For the affluence of the area you'd expect better but it's really not. After receiving more than one awkward personal message and ridiculous "compliment" regarding my original review, where I mentioned that it's annoying when ID isn't required to use my credit card with "SEE ID" in the signature line, I felt I should update my review. This Safeway now loses another star because customer service and check-out are still horrendous. If you're a lunch-break kamikaze and want to sacrifice that hour of the afternoon youre free from work in order to stand in a slow-moving, unfriendly check-out line, this is the Safeway for you. I have co-workers that sometimes still attempt to "run to Safeway really quick" and I never hesitate to ask if they'd mind grabbing me some delicious broccoli salad from the deli. The most I can justify for this Safeway location is 2 stars. This store is the closest Safeway to my home so I find myself here fairly often to make a quick pickup of a few things. However, I'm hardly ever that satisfied with the shopping experience. Quite regularly they are either out of stock or simply don't carry the item I'm looking for, which frequently causes me to have to go to a 2nd store anyway. I find this quite frustrating as usually the main reason I've chosen to shop at this store is for the convenience of a quick buy and dash. Having to go to a 2nd store completely destroys my objective and leaves me wondering why I came here in the first place. For a major grocery trip we will always choose to go to Trader Joes, or Whole Foods, or either the Safeway location on Treat Blvd. or in Alamo. Those 2 Safeway's are larger stores which seem to be better stocked. We have been satisfied with the service at the pharmacy at this location. I am a supporter of local charities, however, one other irritating aspect is that we always seem to be accosted at the door both entering and exiting, sometimes by multiple charities . . . And that is in addition to being asked at the cash register if we'd like to make a donation to yet another charity. Perhaps they should consider limiting to 1 charity per day to avoid irritating their shoppers, and so that the charities don't "dilute" each other by all hitting you up at once. read more

Not my favorite Safeway, but it'll do in a bind. It's conveniently located on Mt. Diablo, and within walking distance to much of downtown Walnut Creek. It's very compressed with smaller aisles, less selections and an odd layout in terms of where to find certain products. It's a little worn around the edges and the lines are always insanely long. Despite all that, I find myself here every so often because I am a customer of their pharmacy. When picking up prescriptions I'll do a mini-shopping trip. However, I am not a fan of doing a larger shopping excursion here-the variety and inventory is just not up to par. Nice customer service at the registers. The Safeway Pharmacy...not so much. They are often pretty sour and act like you are inconveniencing them when you step up to the window. Safeway is just one of those places that you'll pick based upon location and if you're in downtown Walnut Creek, this is your go-to stop.... The Yelp 100 Challenge! read more

You never know with this Safeway. I only ever come here at 8 in the morning and I really prefer to see I-don't-remember-her-name-but-she-has-adorable-blonde-highlights-cute-glasses-and-is-the-sweetest-cashier-ever-you-know-who-I'm-talkin'-bout-don't-you? Anyway she's a real doll. I hate when they only have one cashier but that seems to be a trend here. Like ballet flats with that crappy, painful stretchy ruching in the back or hip huggers, it's a really sad trend to watch happen and usually one that personally offends and often violates me as a human being. Sometimes this trend even leads to other customers getting hostile with each other. You don't want to be there when you start seeing elder abuse--and no, I don't mean younger people abusing elders, I mean elders abusing younger people because as young people we know better than to ever disrespect or even stare too long with too much strength in our stance at our elders. This is the worst grocery store. I'm a Safeway shopper and I live less than 2 miles from this store and avoid it like the plague. Literally, a plague. Last night, I needed a bag of sugar for my sons school project. Being brave, I thought I'd give it a try again. I don't think I've been in the store for over a year. It's always dirty and smells. I parked far away and ventured inside. Three people almost ran into me during the 20 steps to the sugar. Although I was only at the sugar section for less than 20 Seconds, I had people on both sides asking me to get out of the way. What?!?!? Dang! I thought self Checkout would be a good option. Only 2 of 4 were working. Nice. The line for self checkout was 5 people deep and I got behind a lady with a cart full of groceries. Great. Practicing, my deep breathing exercises, I tried to remain calm, while I waited....and waited...and waited..... Then, one of the other sled checkouts started blinking. They are NOT SANITIZING their carts. I went there today and asked the masked woman outside of the entry, "Where are the clean and sanitized carts?" She pointed to a long row of carts and said they were clean. When I left the store 20 minutes later, I asked the same woman, "where do you want me to put this cart I just used?" She said she would take it and I watched as she took it from me and pushed it back over into the row of carts. She did not sanitize it and she did not clean it. Disgusting. And as far as I could tell there were no wipes or hand sanitizers anywhere for customers to use. Horrible during COVID times. read more

Dearest Safeway on South Broadway, There's no easy way to say it, it's just not working out between us. Don't cry, it's not you, it's me. Um... I'm from a big city and I just expected more. I'm leaving you for your sister, the Alamo Safeway. Why? Well, you're just too small, your isles are so narrow that customers have to go down them single file. You only stock 1/4th my grocery list, your produce is the worst I've ever seen, and trying to find an employee to ring you up is like searching for gold in my kids sand box, there just isn't any. Well, that's not true, there's one lady usually working the register but she's typically occupied by fighting with another customer, really busy being dazed and confused, or just trying hard not to pay attention to me. Quite frankly, even when I visit you for something simple like, ice, bread, milk, or Starbucks, I'm still disappointed. I've been a long time customer of this Safeway for years, and I am absolutely appalled by how they are handling business during this pandemic. For starters, they have an employee stationed outside wearing a mask, which is a plus. I hesitated in entering the supermarket because I wasn't sure if there was a limit of how many people were allowed inside at a time. She politely addresses me with, "you can go in." I thanked her, grabbed a basket and made my way into the store. As I entered the supermarket, it was sheer pandemonium. There were so many people inside. Looking back, I should've left and not continued my shopping. At the time, I figured, I just need these three items, and then I'll leave. So I made my way through the aisles, and noticed that some of the employees were chatting among themselves, and one of them didn't have his mask on. It was dangling from his neck, where you can clearly see his nose and mouth. In a mean tone, I said, "put that thing back on!", and I walked away before he had a chance to respond to me. Funny thing is, a couple of aisles later, I saw the same employee, though this time he had his mask on properly; I can only hope what I said prompted him to do so. It didn't end there, though. I also saw another customer walking about with his nose sticking out of his mask. Seriously?! If you don't like masks, stay the hell away from the supermarket while you still can. We don't need YOUR dirty germs. Why isn't anyone in this store enforcing the laws of Contra Costa County!? There's too many people in the store at the same time, certain people not abiding by the 6-feet rule, and individuals (including one staff member) not wearing their masks on/ or having them on improperly. If I have to report you guys to City Hall or the County because you are not abiding by the laws bestowed upon us, resulting in putting your customers (and your employees) at risk, then THAT is what I will do. Otherwise, if you guys can't be the example to your customers who walk into your store, or refuse to enforce the laws, I will simply take my business elsewhere, and you will LOSE a valued customer. read more
