Its the worst store I've ever been to. Use to live nearby and since moving across town haven't shopped here in years and forgot how awful it is. From the employees being a cut below, to the crazy narrow isles and today learned their idiotic self check out isle has a table, unlike all other safeway's, of holding exactly 2 items. I asked the employee whats the deal? And she said this is 15 items or less. I apoligized. And said I must have misses the sign and she said, "there's no sign, you're just suppose to know" what the F is that? Drive out of your way to avoid this store, you'll thank me. read more

They're open 24hrs but the employees wear headphones and listen to music early in the mornings ghosting customers, most shoppers go towards the deli in the morning to grab a bite to eat or a drink at the Starbucks kiosk yet the one entrance unlocked in the morning is on the opposite side of the store. At the deli the breakfast sign clearly says ALL day yet no one will make a breakfast sandwich or burrito before 6am when most Bay Area commuters are already on the road. safeway here is different in that they have a larger selection of 22 ounce craft beers than most safeways. like others, one must buy 6 to get the best price. not clued into beers outside the bay area. san diego brews have been showing up everywhere sushi station here too. buys: amazon tea (.69) -usually loaded with sugar, picked a lo-cal one. -food max selling some @.49, cvs 2$1 takeways: -lots of wines too, not much wine drinking these days. -parking lot is usually full. read more

Dirt, unfriendly stuff, and expired goods always were normal for this place, so I never wrote a review about it. But they started cheating so I decided to warn everyone. They place price tags with low prices in front of more expensive goods and many people do not realize it at check out. If you catch it and tell the cashier she says that the wrong tag was misplaced and that you should compare 20 digits code numbers on a tag and on a product. Got charged a 70% upcharge for the florist to wrap plastic around my flowers. That means $30 of flowers now cost $51. Apparently this is a safeway-wide new policy. I hate it. I love all Safeways!!! However, this Safeway is my regular Safeway and the staff here are so nice and the store is perfectly maintained! Mitzi from the deli is amazing and is always pleasant and kind. Dora from checkouts is also always a joy to have! I would specify names for the checkout stands but they are all so nice, warm, and friendly. I always leave this Safeway happy and they generally have everything I could ever need! read more

Avoid like the plague. If there was a zombiepocalypse, I would venture out and risk my life just to go to a different grocery store. This Safeway branch is horrendous compare to the other really good ones, especially in my area. I only come here because my boyfriend lives in WC and being a man, he can eat pizza everyday. NOPE, not happening. So, off to last minute grocery shopping at this location. As soon as I walk in, I instantly regret it and start cussing my boyfriend's name for not doing his own grocery shopping. The things that we do for love! THE LINES!! I've never seen more than two cashiers working here. You would think that management would do something whenever they see 25 people waiting in line right? Nope! Are you thinking about stopping by before dinner to grab some wine and garlic bread? Well, have fun missing dinner because you'll be waiting in line for at least 30 minutes! To make it worse, the cashiers and baggers never have smiles on their faces. They look miserable and I can't even blame them. In addition, this store feels so gloomy and disorganized. I've lived in Walnut Creek for 6 months now and have been coming to this Safeway as it is right around the corner from me. But no longer. This store suffers from a complete lack of management (or just incompetent management). Checking out is a joke - you'll notice the giant sign hanging from the ceiling that states if the line is 3+ long another register will be open ... HA! They'll have just two registers open during peek hours / weekends and I've seen the lines close to 20 customers long. The cashiers are slow and rude. They'll spend more time talking to each other (especially about when their break/lunch is!) than assisting with your checkout. At one point, inbetween the customer in front of me leaving and it being my turn to check out, the cashier just walked over to the employee at the register behind him and they just started talking. It was a good two minutes before a lady, who appeared to be either another employee ignoring her duties or, to be fair, maybe off the clock, grabbed him, turned him around and pointed to me and the line of people at his register. Seriously? Parking is a nightmare. The lot is small for a grocery store and many, many people just park there in order to walk over to Broadway plaza / downtown WC. Despite the signs around the lot, the store does not actively do anything to deter this from happening. One of the main reasons I would visit is to pick up a sandwich or some meats from the deli. It can be very hit or miss - there's one employee, Veronica?, that is awesome and will make you a killer sandwich. The rest are so-so and there is unfortunately one lady, who never wears her name tag but has, I believe, a Tinkerbell tattoo on her left arm, that is amazingly rude and totally gives off the vibe that helping you is the absolute worst thing she could be doing. I've been to many Safeway/Vons in my time and I've always been able to point out the managers as they would work the lines, wear distinct uniforms (usually just a button-up) and interact with the customers. Despite coming here for 6 months I could not point out a manager if my life depended on it. If the store actually does have a management team, it's obvious they don't care about training or disciplining their employees, their customers experience, or the overall store environment. After my experience yesterday I will never go back to this Safeway. They have a very poor and very small selection of everything from produce to wine. This Safeway is much smaller compared to others, despite catering to the very populated Walnut Creek area. You will always find extremely long lines and a horrendous parking lot. I purchased fresh shrimp from the seafood counter and it tasted so bad that I had to throw it out. I eat a lot of shrimp and I have never had to do that. If you live in Walnut Creek it is well worth it to go a few exists down to the Alamo Safeway, which is wonderful and has everything under the sun. read more

I base my low rating on customer service alone. And to be even more specific; the checkout line. No mater what time of day I go here, I can expect to wait 15 minutes in the checkout line. I live less than a mile away so as far as location goes, it is the most convenient grocery store for me. But lately Ive found myself driving out of my way to go to other stores just so I don't have so stand in the 'Russian Bread Line'. read more

This is quite possibly one of the worst grocery stores around here. Selection fiiiine, just your average (maybe even "nicer") grocery store. But employees are seriously rude here. I have had 2 instances where customer service was beyond horrible. One was when I freshly moved here from another state, and my driver's license was clipped and I had the yellow paper. I had no idea that I can't buy alcohol during the switch process, and the lady at the register was all authority coming down on me, made me feel like I'm a criminal when I asked her to show me where on the yellow paper it says that I can't pick up some wine. Now I understand, but I was honestly unaware, and there could've been nicer ways to inform me of the rule. She chose to do it horribly. Another time my out-of-country relative visited and attempted to buy - similarly, something that she apparently needed her passport for, because all other forms of picture IDs with DOB were not accepted [....]. Well, again, this place needs to provide basic customer service training for the cashiers, because as soon as they find themselves in a situation where they actually have to interact with the customer, or god forbid explain something, they are terrible, rude, ignorant, and unprofessional, EVEN when the customer is not acting confrontational. So, all in all, this place is terrible, and I haven't even mentioned the legendary parking lot that is famous for car break-ins. Do yourself a favor and only pick up baking powder from here, if you must. read more

I hate to be SO negative but this Safeway really needs work - mostly in customer service and professionalism. There are women who work here who act as though they are just hanging out at each others' places. & I'm not making this statement over one incident - oh no, there have been many many times where I've witnessed these two at their own cash registers yelling over customers literally having their own personal conversation. Recently they were at back to back registers and they were joking around, laughing, sharing inside jokes, and then even took it as far as leaving their registers to go to the other's register to show each other something or say something more quietly. This was all happening as I was standing there waiting for the lady to let me know the my card didn't take. So I was forced to stand there and wait around not knowing what was happening until she was finished with her conversation with her gal pal. Both of these women are nice, they are just very chatty and I understand why that's great, but there's a time and place. When you have a line down the aisles, that would NOT be the time to talk to each other and/or every single customer about their plans that night. Because the lines are always so long, and the employees are so annoying sometimes, I never want to shop here unless it's unavoidable.. .I will drive to Alamo's huge, beautiful Safeway! This Safeway could be so much better if they provided some type of workshop about how to act in a workplace. I've witnessed a couple guys who are incredibly hard working! This review is geared towards their deli. I love Safeway Delis. They serve great sandwiches for the most part, and they are very inexpensive. The gentleman who built my sandwich today was slow. He spoke in slow sentences, he built the sandwich real slow, and in the end it was not only delicious, it looked beautiful in this sandwich-lover's eyes. He evenly placed everything on my sandwich so that it was pretty damn near symmetrical. The balance was great as it means each bite is equal. He asked if i would like something on the sandwich before putting it on, even though the sandwich description has it. In the end the sandwich tasted awesome. I do wish this Safeway had a place to sit at and eat. I actually wish EVERY Safeway had such a place. However, in the end I had no problem scarfing it down in their parking lot read more

This Safeway is the closest one to my domicile. Unfortunately, in a town of 65,000 people, a good 50+ percent of them can make the same claim. That means a quick trip to this particular Safeway is never possible, even though it's only a three minute walk from my place. There's always a crowd, and the layout is a lesson in what not to do when designing a supermarket. The big problem is this particular Safeway is about half the size of your typical suburban Safeway. Yet they tried to pack everything into the small space. Fitting two carts down an aisle is possible, but you might need to lube up your cart first in order to fit it into such a tight space. When someone stops their cart to look at something, it can cause a gridlock that resembles the MacArthur Maze at rush hour. I've seen the checkout lines go as much as 15 carts deep before, and while the cashiers are generally pretty good who really could stand up to that? On the brightside, it does have all the stuff you find in a Safeway and generally Safeways are better than most supermarkets. But it's probably worth the five minute drive to the next Safeway if you're in a hurry. read more

I've always had a love/hate relationship with this Safeway ever since I've gone here as a kid. Essentially, I love that they are 24 hours. I hate everything else to do with it. It's interesting that in 28 years of service, they've managed to maintain this relationship. More or less, this review has to do with the Deli in particular. After a brief amount of shopping, I thought "Well, I don't really have time to cook a full meal, I might as well buy a sandwich and save time." The following is a list of things I could have done in the time it took the ONE person working to make 4 sandwiches (including mine, as there was 3 people ahead of me). 1. Celebrated all major US holidays at least once 2. Braided my facial hair (that had grown quite long within the provided time frame) into fashionable accessories for the upcoming winter. 3. Written my memoir, "My sandwich, my anguish." 4. Had meaningful interactions with people outside of this personal hell I call "the deli line" 5. Been able to enjoy the mediocre sandwich that I waited all this time for instead of wolfing it down to make my preexisting plans. You get the picture. Now I am sure you are asking yourself "why would someone wait for so long for a sandwich, I would have just cooked my own damn lunch, lazy ass." To you, I say "Touche." However, it is completely unreasonable for this Safeway to have one person, who's only skill is moving slow is ridiculous. Especially when there are at least 4 other people working the "Deli area" that are standing around doing nothing. But then again, this wouldn't be Safeway if I didn't contemplate the benefits to self immolation every time I shopped. Well played Safeway, well played. read more

Never thought I would find myself Yelping about a Safeway, but this place continues to disappoint. After recently moving down town Walnut Creek I found Safeway (like usual) to be my go to spot. This Safeway just seems old, gloomy and in need of a serious remodel. They are always out of product with empty shelves and always have crazy long lines. I can understand that this is the only other grocery store down town besides Whole Foods and Trader Joes and would get busy, but no matter what time of day I find myself in there the lines stretch down the isle. They need to hire more checkers to get customers through the lines and do a serious remodel of this place. I expect better from a Safeway in the prestigious Broadway Plaza of down town Walnut Creek. read more

Don't go here if you can help it! Their bakery stuff is always dry, the store manager is very rude, and they don't have a good selection. I recommend the Safeway on Bancroft Ave. Edit: I opened the granola I bought from there a few hours after I wrote this review and it smelled and tasted like chemicals or cleaner. I brought it to the Bancroft Safeway with my receipt and they gave me a full refund which I chose to be an exchange for some cookies and they even gave me an extra free package! Impressed, pleased, and doubly sure that the downtown Safeway is not the place to go. read more

The pharmacy here is pretty awful. There's always a line of people, it takes them a minimum 15 mins to fill your scrip (that's AFTER you've stood in line for 10 mins). If you are grocery shopping here anyway, it's a different story, but if you want to just get in and out, don't plan on it. I prefer the Safeway on Treat Blvd. They have more parking and a larger store, plus nice wine selection. read more

This Safeway is horribly managed and chronically understaffed. I've been shopping here for nearly two years, only because I live across the street, and the lines are consistently 15 to 20 minutes even nights and weekends. It's clearly a management problem for a couple reasons. For one, many of the employees are very genuine, efficient and friendly. They work hard and it shows. Also, I have actually seen one of the managers degrading a cashier (one of my favorite cashiers btw) in front of a line of customers. And finally, they just never have enough staff for the amount of people that shop here. The only reason they aren't getting one star is because the staff is really nice. At least initially, until they figure out that they're being completely overworked and underappreciated. Also the deli has served me raw bacon twice. read more

Safeway is a popular chain of supermarkets throughout California. Actually, you can find them in other states as well and while there are not as many in Southern California as there used to be they are all over the place in Northern California. Now what is particularly SPECIAL about THIS location...Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby. This flavor of Ben & Jerry's is like a f*ckin four leaf clover...rare and not easy to find. THIS Safeway's carries it by the load. In addition to having a Starbucks AND a pharmacy (with very lovely staff) as well...yeah man, this SAFEWAY is great!! read more

I've never reviewed a Safeway but I was inspired by my visit yesterday. Going to a Safeway in Walnut Creek is like entering a museum where the extremes of the human condition are on display. You have slow, walker-jockeys carefully perusing the aisles and then you have the typical Walnut Creek hottie. From moms to the co-ed's. It is a terrifying and confusing display. As you're trying to squeeze by the Rossmoor hordes you will generally stop in your tracks as you experience a case of lookey-loo whiplash. Is shopping easily done here? No. But it can be better than the health-spa environment of Whole Paycheck down the street. read more

I can't believe I'm writing an update to a one star business a year and a half later just to say THIS PLACE IS STILL TOTAL ASS. Regularly crowded, cramped, poorly run, dirty, and with shitty "fresh" produce that spoils days earlier than even the Safeway on Bancroft! What is going on with this place?! Customer service has gotten marginally better since management changed hands, but the good employees are still good and the bad employees are still bad; the gossip, the absent-minded pop culture chatter and the overwhelming sense of disrespect and boredom are still all the exact same. The overarching problem seems to be that the building sucks, and there isn't an option to expand. Why is it always a struggle to get decent service at this Safeway's Deli? Today was the last straw! I was in line waiting to get a sandwich. An Asian guy named Adel was making the sandwiches while another employee was working the fried chicken counter. When it was finally my turn to order he did an about face and started working the chicken counter and started taking care of everyone in line there despite FACT that I had gotten there before any of them! I was about to dish out some unpleasantries to this little twerp when a nice gentleman in the chicken line objected and requested I be taken care of; "the gentleman at your deli counter was here first, why don't you help him instead?" The rude Asian twerp then attended me ... but struggled with understanding simple directions (language problem?) NOTE: This is not the only time I've had horrific service at this Safeway! The main draw of this store is the accessible location right next to Broadway Plaza. However, this is also one of its most significant problems and the manner in which they chose to address it has been a train wreck. They have no where near enough parking for the store and due to the location, people began to park there for convenience to shop at multiple stores. Understandably they are monitoring the lot for abuse, but have taken the matter to the extreme. As can often be the case, once you give someone unchecked power, they can inadvertently undermine your core business. This has become the case at this Safeway location. They hired an overzealous parking lot attendant to watch the lot and coordinate towing cars that exceed the tight time limit or make stops at multiple stores (even if that includes this Safeway). Therefor regardless of your net spend at Safeway you must vacate the lot immediately or you risk being accosted by the parking attendant. My wife and I were literally shocked that this was authorized and condoned behavior. It was unprofessional and extremely rude to attack your customers in this manner. The incident was so excessive that we will never shop there again and have largely eliminated Safeway from our shopping entirely. The difference in experience at Whole Foods is night and day. You do get what you pay for. read more

I don't know what it is about this Safeway, but I'm not a fan. It's always super busy, which is fine, but why only have 2 checkers working when there's lines going down the aisles? I normally don't care, I come to this store knowing it's not going to be an in-n-out trip. Today finally just annoyed me. We tried to use the credit card terminal, and for some reason (actually happens more than often at this location) it froze. The checker tried to unfreeze it but to no avail, so he called for manager assistance. Aside from that, the onions had no barcode, so the bagger had to go find a new bag (why he couldn't just type in sweet onion is beyond me). Anyways back to said checker and terminal issues. Manager finally came, asked what was wrong.... actually, he came over with a little attitude. He seem a little confused on what the problem was....checker wasn't very clear with the manager though, and was kind of mumbling, but it was obvious the terminal was frozen. He took a look, and did something and it unfroze. What bothered me and warrants the two-stars, is what the manager did next. Instead of just making note of it to talk to him later, he turns to the checker and in front of customers calls him out " you need to tell customers what is going on because they can't see, or don't know what is going on" Cashier cowered a little, until myself, a friend and some other customers flat out told the manager that he did tell us, and that's why he called for you. It's one thing if this is a constant thing with the checker..... but don't call out your employees infront of your customers, its very unprofessional, and awkward for your employee not to mention, we the customers feel guilty for possibly causing a problem and in turn getting the employee in trouble. Aside from this incident, I am just not a fan of this Safeway. It's as though time stands still the minute you walk into the door. Cashiers though fast, seem to be slow at the same time, god forbid you require help, there's no one to be found. I will say though, all the young baggers are awesome and are always willing to help you with finding what you need. I know you're a chain superstore Safeway, but get it together. I'm at the point, i'm willing to drive the next town over just for Safeway. read more

I like this safe way its always clean the people are very friendly and I am a frequent shopper here, they also have a blockbuster place to rent movies so I think that's also great. I just wish it was bigger though it seems small but overall you can find everything here and if you cant someone is always willing to help you. read more
