Like many of you who might be reading this know, living in an old home can present lots of plumbing challenges. Thus my problem: I was in need of a shut off valve handle for an old hose bib assembly. Though Saffer didn't have one, Master Plumber Robert Wilcox who was manning the front desk when I visited, sure tried to find a solution. I left without the handle, but some sound advice and respect for their customer service. As owner and operator of or WM. J. Theiss & Son for decades, Mr. Theiss chose to stock hard-to-find items even though the plumbing industry was rapidly and constantly changing. Thankfully, after the merger with Saffer Plumbing, it appears his desire to serve the surrounding community remains intact. Outstanding. Chris explained everything so that I understood what happened with the toilet in the master bedroom. It made perfect sense. He priced out repair vs. replace and, with no pressure from Chris whatsoever, I decided on replace. Chris and Brook, who brought the new toilet, were both wonderful. I will definitely use them again. The whole job took about 2.5 hours and the total cost was $1,088 for the toilet replacement and a few other incidentals that I wasn't charge for. I was delighted. Saffer has done both plumbing and electrical work for me. New electric lines added to the laundry and refrigerator on separate breakers. A water softener and filtration system were added and water heater was replaced. Each service was done well with amazing detail, and they cleaned up afterward. Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate... Saffer has a good reputation for quality work in the Baltimore area and I have had an overall good experience with this company. But their pricing is outrageously high, non-transparent and borderline dishonorable. My job was a simple one and not an emergent call. Replace a bathroom sink faucet with a new Delta quick connect Geist model. Saffer does not give quotes over the phone. They charge $60 to come and price your job which they credit to your bill if you go with them. The phone/scheduling was seamless, they even called and offered an earlier time when they had a cancellation. The team of 2 plumbers arrived on time and gave me an initial quote of $649. Keep in mind that I had already purchased the faucet. The job required no parts from Saffer. Almost immediately when I started to negotiate - they offered a $108 "discount". Then when I continued to negotiate, they went off-site "to call and see if they could talk the management into a lower price" and took off another $54. They finally came in at $487. It felt like dealing with a slimy car salesman and frankly I am still unhappy with this price. They were at the house (including the substantial time spent negotiating) for 1 1/2 hrs total. The work they did was fine, but they did not clean the counter surface of the accumulated years of crusted calcifications and grime before putting the new faucet in - come on... such a simple step. Overall - I give them a 3/5 for the work and a 1/5 for the pricing. read more

This was a spectacular plumbing experience. Saffer plumbing was right on time, experienced plumber who had been a plumber for close to 20 years! He identified himself, always kept his mask on, made sure he didn't mess our home and finally cleaned up after himself. Our 34-year-old boiler started short cycling, and another company and a private contractor said we needed to replace it. It was too expensive to fix, they told us. Then the guys from Saffer came over, quickly figured out the problem, and the replacement part we needed was only $100. Saffer's guys said we had another good few years with this boiler. I had the same issue one of the previous commenters - James A. - had with Frank. I used Saffer for a couple years and was generally happy. I had one issue pop up once - a plumber suggesting work I knew I didn't need - but it wasn't big enough to drop them as the plumber I called. More recently, however, I had a problem arise following one of their jobs. I called to get a second appointment and was told the follow up work wasn't their responsibility. When I asked what would happen if it was determined that their work is what caused the second problem, I was transferred to Frank. He immediately became defensive, told me I waited too long to report the problem, and generally lacked any professionalism. I calmly explained to Frank that his tone and manners were unnecessary, that I appreciated the work his company had done for me in the past, but he seemed more intent on winning the conversation. I guess he won, but Saffer loses. I won't use them anymore and I won't recommend them anymore. It's a shame that they employ this guy at an otherwise good company. read more

Called them first thing this morning and they were able to get someone here within an hour. Guy named Earl came and did an awesome job. Fixed the problem, was super nice, and charged me a fair price. I Called Saffer Plumbing to replace a 10 inch copper pipe. It was fully exposed in the wall. They sent a plumber out to give a free estimate . They would not give me a rough estimate over the phone ?? I figured that most companies would be close in their hourly rate so I agreed to the free estimate and stopped reaching out to other companies. The plumber gave me a cost of $433 for the job. He said that the hourly rate is $350 and the rest was for the copper pipe. I excepted the charge because I didn't want to wait another 2/3 days for another company to send a plumber out at that point! This was not an emergency call !! Their marketing strategy is great !! Their goal is to get a plumber out to you with the free estimate and you think they will be comparably priced and you have him come out and stop reaching out to other companies and that is when they get you !! The plumber was nice but the PRICE was embarrassingly HIGH !!! If you are looking to waste $$$$ call them!! I made a big mistake but you shouldn't !! Always get a second estimate and you will see Saffer Plumbing is Highway Robbery !!!!! read more

I've used Saffer for a number of plumbing jobs and they have been excellent. They diagnose the problem and show it to you as well and present you with quotes on the spot. They are very transparent. Although i have never posted a review for them , I could not pass up the opportunity this time. I had a backed up toilet in basement and called Saffer and they said they could send someone out the same day, but not until after 4 pm. The tech arrived right at 4 and was able to give me several options (RootX) that I could try before moving to another solution which would be much cheaper if it works and would take care of the problem. He then presented me with project quotes if that did not work. Needless to say I was impressed, because he could have offered the the other two solutions and i would not have been the wiser. Here's the shocker, there was no charge for the service call. When he left he said he was emailing the invoice, and when i opened it it was a 0 charge, and he also included the quotes for the other solutions which would be good for i think several months if the problem returns and RootX does not solve the problem. I will continue to use Saffer for my plumbing and electrical needs. read more

It took several visits to address a few seemingly unrelated problems but this company resolved them and we all learned a few new things! The owner personally paid a visit to see for himself the oddity I was describing. And while here, another problem previously thought to have been fixed resurfaced. The plumbers who came here had a positive attutude and were always pleasant. What's more, the owner was gracious enough to adjust my billing so that I wasn't charged for multiple visits. I had them work on my house yesterday and they turned off the gas (i.e. heat) for the work. The worker forgot to get my heat working again. Was freezing last night, realized it this morning, and when I called they said they would come between 10-2. I am very disappointed. I have two children under 3 in the house and am trying to keep them warm with a space heater in one part of the house. They said they only have one heating guy on today but it did seem like they could have called someone else in based on what the person on the telephone said. read more

I had a problem with a very difficult clog because of improperly installed waste pipes done by the builder. I did due diligence and shopped around for an estimate - all ridiculously high and/or the business owners/estimators patronized me. Since I really wanted to use a business in the neighborhood, I went with Saffer. What could go wrong? NOTHING!!! Paid $170 for about 3 minutes of labor that only partially fixed my problem (water leaking in the basement). No time was taken to examine what the full problem was. When I later figured out there was another source of water leaking in the basement, I had to pay an additional $150 to fix that too. I feel like I had to pay twice to fix the same problem. Very unprofessional in dealing with customer remediation. Everything started great and professional. Once a couple explanations and price questions come up, that's where one of their reps, Frank, dropped all professionalism. --There was no check-in for an appointment that was scheduled for a week. Nothing the day before, nothing confirming time, etc. --At the time of the appointment setup, there were still a couple questions from them as to how to approach the proposed job due to length of ducting. --I called the night before and left a message for a call back to confirm the appointment. I heard the morning of that the team was running late. --When I reached Frank, I also inquired about the job and the total cost for the job. At this point, I was merely inquiring on how firm the price was since it felt high for the job required. Frank then put the blame on me as the customer for asking these questions the morning of the job. I can understand being a little irritated on his part and I'm sure he has had his fair share of customers, but to lose his professionalism and drop any notion of good customer service is uncalled for. As a result, I cannot recommend Saffer to anyone I know. In this economy, and in paying big money for plumbing work, the standard should be professional and courteous, even in challenging situations. They did a great job. I needed a washer/dryer hookup installed in a somewhat unusual spot. Another company took a look and said it couldn't be done, but Saffer was able to do some problem solving and come up with a workable plan. On the day of the job, the crew arrived and went right to work, executing the plan well. They got it done in the specified time frame and price, and so far (3 months later) the work is holding up well. The office staff was pretty easy to work with as well. If you try to contact them you get an answering service that doesn't know anything and they aren't likely to return your call anytime soon. They provided a written quote but when the second crew came to do the work they said that they wouldn't do it and left. Not a professional outfit that is easy to work with.
