In our quest for quality and diverse food, we came to Saffron because the only other local Indian restaurant we enjoyed had closed a couple years ago. The space is on the smaller side, a bit dark (with dreaded carpeting) and tables slightly close for my comfort. The food, however is quite delectable. From the boti kebab masala, tandoori chicken and saffron medley, everything was exceptional. Service was ok the 1st time we went, however the 2nd time was a different story. We waited about 20 minutes after 3 requests for more basmati rice. By the time we got more rice, our main dishes were cold and I was heated. Drink refills had to get flagged down. Our waiter seldom checked on us and seemed more interested in the "regular" customers. The two waiters working a full restaurant that night spun around endlessly, clearly overwhelmed by the 8 or 9 full tables. Takeout only from now on. read more

Traveling on route 84, it was time for dinner and we wanted a good local restaurant. We saw the reviews of Saffron and decided to go for it. We had an excellent eggplant appetizer, a delicious asparagus spinach soup, shrimp in mango curry and an off the menu lamb dish recommended by the owner. Also the naan was great. The further upstate NY the less quality food. Unless of course you are looking for cheesburgers, steaks, or wild game. Here in Middletown you can find this decent Indian restaurant. Many of the dishes seem much more American than I am used to. Or at least lacking ingredients and variety than many of the other Indian restaurants I've been too. But they are great none the less, lamb biryani stood out at our table. Seemed But hey, up here we can't complain. My family is from Sullivan county, this may be the closest Zagat rated restaurant to wear we live. I don't know, I haven't checked, and am not going to. Saffron is simply awesome... Even better is that it's close to home. DW adores the Tikka Masala and I typically go for something a little spicier like the Vindaloo. They have an extensive selection of Indian Beer (go for the Old Monk 10000). After being introduced to the wonders of Indian food in Albany NY, Having come home to Middletown and to find that Saffron existed, well it was exciting. They have a buffet during lunch hours which is just totally awesome. If getting your order to go I think you get way more than you do if you dine in, I'm not totally sure. But I got some food to go recently and they gave me an insane amount of chana masala and a huge portion of rice, (NOT that I am complaining !!! ) Saffron is an amazing place to dine in or take out some delicious food. This place rocks. They have an outstanding lunch buffet which has everything from aloo matar to butter chicken. They offer several kinds of rice, potatoes, chicken, lamb and garlic naan. all for $10. dinner menu is more elaborate and expensive. They offer a very large wine selection. Indian wine is delicious and goes well with anything on their menu. The service at lunch time seems to be better than the service at dinner time. It's also a very quiet atmosphere so if you like that this would be a nice place to take a date. read more

As far as real India buffets go in Middletown, well there's nothing to say because other than this there aren't really any. This review is just for the lunch buffet btw Large place, nice tables, a full bar, but more classy. Unfortunately there was only 1 waiter when we went serving 5 tables... place is quiet, lots of parking Lots of variety in the food, but unfortunately really bland. Like really bland. The chicken tikka masala was good, not great. Tandoori chicken were chicken wings tandoori style, some veggies options like peas carrots and lima beans? in coconut shreds and veggie curry. Spinach pakodas and palak paneer were bland but alright. Dessert was gajra halwa and some melted vanilla ice cream pseudo kheer? Waiter also brings you naan (if he remembers :P) Overall for the $12 lunch buffet I wouldn't go back but as other reviews said and the menu showed their a la carte looks pretty good (but more pricey). I guess I am biased being originally from a more food diverse location, however if you're looking for indian food go for it. It's pricey so don't be surprised. Quality is better than most places around, but if you have a standard for indian food you may be disappointed. I will say however some of their dishes, if you request, can get pretty spicy if you're into that sort of thing Would recommend if you're craving indian food just to fill that urge. The last time I had an Indian buffet in NYC, I promised myself I would never eat at another Indian buffets. I said this over and over again while I was riding/hugging the toilet bowl all night long. That being said, I don't know how I gave this restaurant a go. My assumption was that the restaurant up here would not be as good as the ones in the City. Well, whatever the reason was, I was very surprised when I stepped inside the dining hall. Not only was the hall roomy, but it also was very clean and bright. Who cares about the interior? First time here, and we had: Masala chai Madras lamb curry (spicy brown coconut curry with lamb pieces) Bhindi do byaz (roasted okra and tomato/onion in a spicy sauce) garlic naan In general, I was thoroughly impressed with the food. I'm a pretty rabid Indian food fan, so I've eaten many places of varied caliber. I'd say this was almost as good as the best I've had. The spiciness was EXACTLY perfect for me, both my husband and I specified 'medium' spicy and that seemed perfect (for your average American palate that likes spicy, but isn't used to true Indian fire-tongue levels.) the okra dish came recommended by my server (I asked) and was a pleasantly flavorful surprise. The okra was excellently cooked - not dry, not slimy - caramelized and delicious, with just the right amount of sauce. My husband licked his bowl clean, so I'm guessing he liked the lamb. They serve basmati rice seasoned with ghee and cardamom, very nice authentic touch. also, when I took some leftovers home, they threw in a free container of rice - score! the masala chai was unsweetened but spicy; as it should be. the only thing I'd like to see is a chewier naan. it was delicious and fresh, but more bready than the best I've had. still solid 4-star stuff though. oh, one last thing. I'd read a few reviews saying the staff was a bit unfriendly, and I'll say they must have taken those reviews to heart, because our waiter and host were all smiles. read more

Went there for dinner tonight and it was SO good! I had the Boti Kebab Masala (tandoori lamb in a tomato sauce) and I loved every bite. The lamb was so unbelievably tender and well spiced. A little spicy but not too hot just perfect. The staff and servers were very attentive, professionally dressed, and well groomed. I also had a Mango lassi which was SOOOO sweet and thick it could have been dessert, what a treat! Now, the reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because of their seating arrangement and music. I felt as if people are seated on top of each other and we could hear everyones conversation very clearly, it would be nice if they broke the seating up a little bit until there were too many people to do so. Also, the music playing was very eccentric. I eventually tuned it out but it kind of reminded me of an Indian Experimental Noise Set which is fine but kind of abrupt on the ears. To me these things are not that big of a deal compared to the service, cleanliness, and quality of food, which were all spot on. I have to admit that I'm an addict for good Indian food. When I die, I want my coffin to be filled with delicious lamb khorma. So, while upstate visiting my friend's family, I shuddered when they suggested Indian for dinner. Indian outside of NYC?! My bowels did a flip, and not the good kind. We went to this Indian restaurant while our way from Finger lakes region to Queens.. It's the only and good Indian restaurant in the town. The seating space is huge and the staff is modest. We ordered Navratan Korma that came with Rice along with Malabar Parantha and Veg biryani (came with raita).. The Parantha was buttery but boy O boy, it knocked our socks off! A very well appointed restaurant and professional staff was a welcoming sight . I didn't plan to dine here (I was merely picking up some equipment for work ) but the aroma was too inviting ! I started with a dried fish appetizer and my main, Kadai Goat were both delicious and quite flavorful . A wonderful garlic Naan accompanied my entreè. The wait staff was attentive and courteous. Saffron used to be good. I have no idea what happened. I have a feeling they changed ownership or something. Or maybe just forgot what good food tastes like. I mean, literally everything was bad the last two or three times I came here. I remember when their food was spiced beautifully, and tasted fresh and delicious, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt a few times and returned in hopes of actually enjoying a damn meal there again. I had high hopes for this place...I came in at 5:15 which is usually wen they start dinner (5pm) my food was cold wen I got it and tasted as if it was leftover from the lunch buffet (chicken Tika masala was cold,rice was cold and hard) they had 2 hour prior. Have not had Indian food in a long time and was in the neighborhood yesterday during the hours of the lunchtime buffet. I was a bit terrified since I have been at the Golden Corral in Middletown and was a bit reluctant to visit another "all you can eat" establishment in the area. I was pleasantly surprised. When you walk inside, the banquet room it to the left and the restaurant it to the right. You enter and someone greets you and seats you. I guess they do mostly buffet business since they don't ask you what you want, nor do they ask you if you want to order any drink aside from the water provide. Soon after being seated, a basket of warm Naan bread is brought to the table and it is very good. The cold salad items are a bit limited in comparison to what I was used to at the place in New City, NY. I must say that the tandoori chicken was probably the most moist and tender I have had in a while. They had a very yellow colored cabbage dish that was very unique and quite good. Since we arrived at 2:00 and the buffet ends at 2:30, they did the best at keeping the serving trays full until the end. Most of the offerings were pieces of chicken in very thick and flavorful sauces. For $10.99 and you can eat what you want and as much as you want, it is good deal. The noise level of the patrons and the behavior of the patrons was a 180 degree difference from the Golden Coral down the street. People behaved decently on the serving line and had good manners. The noise level of the restaurant was very low also. Was a nice time for hubby and me. A woman sitting next to us with her maybe 4 or 5 year old daughter were a pleasure and she accompanied her child up to the serving line every time as a parent should. read more

Very nice food! Since going the first time, we have been back a mere 2 weeks later. It is THAT good.... you'll want to go back. Unfortunately, being tucked away in a strip mall does not help this place. If you can look past the exterior, and go inside, the food will satisfy. Often it will look closed, but I learned, it IS open. Don't judge it by cars in the parking lot, they are open!!! The bar menu is fun, loads of Indian import beers. Plus the cocktail menu has some fun stuff worth giving a shot at. So far, we have had some appetizers, that came out fresh, savory, and tasty. When you first get to your seat you'll get some crunchy papadams with a few dipping sauces. The mulligatawny soup was rich and flavorful. The samosas were stuffed with lamb and vegetables.... they hit the spot. Over the two visits we have had vegetables, lamb, fish, dumplings. All of these came in amazing sauces. The sauces have such variety and intensity (of flavor) that you probably could just order a bowl of rice with sauce.... they're that good. All dishes came with a nicely prepared long grain rice. Order some type of bread (naan, chipati, etc), they really hit the spot with dinner. Overall, I am happy I decided to go in and have dinner. Amazing Indian food - the goat curry and goat biriyani are to die for. They usually have a North Indian buffet during the week and South Indian buffet on weekends. Mondays are closed. Cleanliness is pretty good too. I took off one star because their raitha was finished before we could taste it and there was a lag in replenishing dishes and plates. However, for 13 something dollars inclusive of tax, this unlimited lunch buffet is a heaven to head to indulge your taste buds. read more

I feel terribly for the owners, since they've kind of found themselves in a crap location (that's right, they rock the old Ground Round location near National Wholesale Liquidators), but don't let that scare you--they simply OWN it, like Paris Hilton would no doubt own a garbage bag dress. Not only is the food decent Indian food for Middletown- it's on par with the finer Indian/Pakistani establishments in NYC. The decor is classy, and the waitstaff is superb. I moved up here from Queens and missed Baluchi's in the city. My husband and I ate here and it has become our go to spot! The food is fantastic and authentic. We've brought several people here and haven't heard any complaints. Their portions are good and the food.. just so so good. The wait staff are also great.
