What a treat. I love the fruit ice creams- mango, papaya, pomegranate. They also have rosewater ice cream, pastachio, coconut and somethings I can't pronounce or remember. If you are a terrible chicken, they do have vanilla and a chocolate. These guys are generous with samples. I got something with cream and cardamom tonight. Meant to wrote it down,but forgot. I heard about this place from a friend....what a great discovery for some refreshing Indian ice cream! The flavors are so powerful....pistachio really tastes like pistachio with little bits mixed in. My favorite is the guava ice cream. The blend of cream, sugar, and everything else is just so good! There are also some traditional Indian flavors that I'll have to try next time. I really liked the helpful guy behind the counter. He thought we were college kids (definitely a compliment!) and let us try whatever flavors we wanted. The prices are higher than your typical Baskin Robbins, but it's worth it because you can't find these flavors anywhere. The ice cream is not as hard as typical ice cream. Who needs American ice cream when you can get Indian ice cream? My favorite ice cream spot by a long shot :) They have so many unique and interesting flavors with so much complexity! I almost always get ice cream falooda with 4 mini scoops because I can't choose just one flavor. Falooda is 4 scoops of ice cream on a bed of clear, thin noodles, topped with rose syrup and some kind of seed. I just love the texture of the noodles! Because of Kulfi Kreme. Kulfi Kreme is the one ice cream (gelato? what's the diff?) flavor at the Saffron Spot that's made with all cream, the rest are made with a mixture of cream and milk. So Kulfi Kreme is extra rich and creamy. It has a rich vanilla-y flavor, almost like frozen custard, but with subtle herb and floral notes (dang! look at me, all fancy). It's definitely worth trying... or buying an entire quart and eating in one sitting, like my wife and I did. There were some other flavors as well that were nice (Saffron, Saffron with something else [it was yellow], Lychee, and Rose were all great). The Mawa Ice Cream is the best thing about Saffron Spot. They even have a separate, higher price for Mawa flavor. It's $3.50 for one scoop of the good stuff, instead of the regular $2.95 they normally charge for a single scoop. That's kinda weird to me. They also don't have restrooms for customers. They do however, have a display case with various sodas all lined up, i.e. coke, diet coke, etc. That's even weirder. I tried a few samples and didn't really like any flavors except for Mawa. The flavors were not your typical baskin robbins flavors. I was really looking forward to a delectable treat. However, when I sampled some of the popular flavors like the rose and saffron, I found the flavors too intense and potent for my liking. A bit overpriced as well. My wallet was definitely a little upset when we left. If anything, I'd come back for the mango. It was refreshing and tasted like ripe mangoes from the Philippines. I had kulfi falooda and rose falooda. Kulfi falooda is one of their best seller and it is good, but not the best in my taste. I think kulfi needs more milk flavor and sweetness in it. Plus smoother texture. I don't like their rose falooda because i have had better (sadly not in LA, so i might come back to this place for kulfi falooda but not for rose falooda). Since the rain let up, we decided to venture forth from Long Beach and do some exploring tonight. Saffron is a bit tricky to find, as it's tucked away in a little mini strip mall. There's a guy in a phantom tollbooth there who insists on asking your "destination", and there are signs posted ubiquitously about the shopping complex decrying that your car will be towed if you set foot off the property while parked there. Yikes. We just parked on the street. I was intrigued by many flavors I'd never heard of. I can't even remember their names now. I decided not to be bashful and just asked the owner what the most popular flavors were. It led me to Mawa. Harnessing the power of google when I got home, I discovered that Mawa is more or less an Indian version of condensed or evaporated milk. The Mawa flavor in the ice cream is perfectly unique and delicious. I got mine split with saffron. NYW got Lychee and Saffron. Kidlet got mango, which was like eating a frozen mango Lhasi. We would definitely return. Some flavors were a bit frosty or icy, but overall someplace fun and unique. Prices were reasonable, and the service was as expected. Also, $0.50 surcharge on ALL credit card transactions, so bring some cash. I thought that was lame...why not just run cost recovery on the transactions under $10? mehhh read more

We were passing by Indian city in Artesia waiting to watch a Bollywood movie in the local cinema, and wanted to get authentic indian ice cream if such a thing existed in Artesia! Looked on yelp...and low and behold found Saffron Spot a block away from us. It was in the back of a plaza and very tiny and difficult to find. It's kind of shady looking cause you walk in this dark alley. But if your brave enough for that, it's great ice cream! There were so many strange and new flavors. I was worried they'd be too strong and not sweet. But the saffron ice cream was actually REALLY good. It was very subtle but still really good.
