The place is difficult to spot. If you didn't know it exists, you probably wouldn't have roll into the plaza in the first place. It's a tiny ice cream joint that probably won't fit more than 5 friends together comfortably. I came with my family after dinner time around 7PM and the line gradually grew until people started waiting outside the store. The ice cream flavors are unique, and that's what make this place interesting. For samples, my family and I tried Rose, Saffron, and Pistachio. We ended up getting Rose and Saffron Falooda, which is a scoop of the ice cream with rose syrup with takmaria and noodles inside. The flavor is definitely unique and "Indian." It reminded me of the Malaysia flavored desserts I have in Malaysia. It's worth of a try just to taste unique flavors you probably won't find else where. They also have a weekly special so you can try a particular flavor for a cheaper price that you normally wouldn't tried. Otherwise, it is sort of expensive for just ice cream. Everything is wrong with this restaurant, the only reason I am giving it a 1 star is because I liKe the gulakand ice cream. They charge extra for everything, if you pay by credit card- extra, want extra chutney- extra- want more ice in your juice - extra, plus the vada in the vada pav is nasty. It's raw, cold, and it looks like days old. Everyone there, including the owner, is arrogant. One time I asked if I could get a little more syrup on my snow cone and they said no we cannot do that. Came here after sushi night and had never previously tried Indian ice cream. I sampled a lot of the flavors, and I really do appreciate workers that don't roll their eyes at customers that ask for a lot and that didn't happen here. My dad's mawa had this fakey butterscotch flavor I hate in caramel, so I didn't have more than a bite. I must have driven by this plaza a hundred times and have never gone inside. Saffron Spot inconspicuously located in the Little India Village food court, a small little shop on the right side. I came in here on hot day, and decided to try the chikoo (I was feeling adventurous). It's a milder fruit I'd never heard of but it was delicious - and not overly sweet either. They have quite a few Indian-inspired flavors as well as some standard flavors as well. The serving size is pretty decent but not overkill. Check in for 10% off! I'm a fruity and nutty girl. That is, for ice cream. Cashew raisin was my flavor here. I tried the more Indian flavors but felt the rose was like eating the actual flower. And the saffron wasn't strong. Later, I tried a bit of the pom and felt it was really sour. It's a cute little spot and probably would have been more crowded but it was a rainy day. The bright cheery colors inside made me feel pretty darn happy. They also sell pints to go as well as shakes and other drinks. So after a wonderful Mother's Day brunch nearby, I needed some dessert. I've tasted Mashti Malone's rosewater ice cream and loved it, so it was time to try something a little more exotic than that: Indian ice cream at the Saffron Spot. Located in a strip mall near the corner of Pioneer and South Streets, Saffron Spot was a small ice cream parlor adjacent to a very crowded Kabob Corner restaurant. There was plenty of free parking in the private lot and the crowd was mostly Asian. Each ice cream flavor in the cold case was brightly colored and had interesting names, such as chikoo, kulfi, and rajbhog. Going for the most exotic flavors, I sampled their saffron silk (saffron, rose, and pistachios), jackfruit (fruity and pungent), chikoo (sugary tasting), and rajbhog (saffron, pistachios, cashews, almonds, and cardamom). My favorite was the rajbhog, a yellow colored herbal tasting ice cream with chopped nuts. It was a very interesting ice cream. In addition to ice cream, the also serve fresh, made-to-order sugar cane juice and exotic hot drinks, such as Masala Milk (milk flavored with saffron, pistachios, almonds, cardamom) and Badam Milk (milk flavored with almond syrup). Prices were very reasonable. One scoop of ice cream was $2.95. Next time I want to try their saffron falooda, which is saffron milk with noodles and takmaria topped with rajbhog or saffron silk ice cream. Another adventure awaits! read more

Took a drive to Artesia today and discovered good food, jewelry and a place to get fish heads -if that's your thing. This tiny ice-cream shop is a necessary stop if your visiting Artesia. It's not the best ice-cream, I think the Necco candy colors are a bit disturbing, but the flavors are exotic and rare. Try the guava, pomegranate, saffron, butterscotch and various mixes with cardamom. It is creamy and sweet, Sometimes that's what you need on a sunny, Southern California day! read more

Came here bc I found a Groupon. It's tucked in a little shopping center. We got three scoops of ice cream, which was supposed to cost $6.50. However, the total came out to $10.75 bc they charge more for one of the scoops we got. This would've been fine; however, the server didn't tell us that that specific flavor cost more.. Obviously we didn't know bc we told her we were first timers. I just think it's common sense to tell patrons that a specific flavor cost more vs. other flavors. Just fair business practice... Also, she kept pushing that specific flavor on us, which is why we even got it. I'm sure others have been fooled, which is why there's a sign that says, "no refund." Thing is they took things a step further and transformed those favorite Indian dessert flavors into ice cream. Of course you'll find the traditional sweets you can find at the other shops along Pioneer, but I'd say give the ice cream a try instead. After lunch at Kabob Corner next door with two of my favorite co-worker/friends, we ventured over to Saffron Spot. I wanted to try it the first time I went to Kabob Corner, but I was way too full. It's a small little ice cream shop that also serves fresh juices, coffees, exotic milks and shaved ice. I think they have a couple "food items" too, like sandwiches. They had over a dozen ice cream flavors, most of which I couldn't pronounce. I probably should've ordered the Saffron ice cream, since it's their specialty, but after my free sample, I just didn't like it enough. I did like the fact that there were pistachios in it, but the saffron was just a bit much for me. I went with the mango. At $2.85 for a single scoop, I pondered whether it was worth it during the entire drive back to the office. I wondered why it was so expensive. Was it the colored plastic flower shaped cup it came in or the little pink fly swatter looking spoon? Can you even call it a spoon? It didn't really have a hump. (Yes...I just said hump. What would you call it? A dip?) They seem to pride everything here on being healthy. My Indian friend said it was and I believe him...he's never lied to me before. After all, he even told me he saw a fly land on one of the ice creams in the freezer case. I told him he could've gone without telling me that and I would've lived happily every after...he said he would've felt like he was lying to me. Aw...what a guy. I didn't care though...a fly is a fly. I've seen them on the baked goods in Starbucks. What can you do? I probably wouldn't go time after time, but I wouldn't stop going completely either. Oh...back to the ice cream. The mango was good. Not too sweet or too tart. Just perfect. Love, love, love this place! Just wish it wasn't so pricey, but it's understandable, they have to make a profit! And it's not like their products don't sell, they do! I love eating here, I don't go often since it's a bit far from where I live, whenever I'm near the area I try to visit this spot, it's great because it's near Indian grocery stores. After I do all my grocery shopping I can have a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant and dessert at this little gem! I LOVE their Rose Water ice-cream. Lots of exotic ice cream flavors that I haven't seen anywhere else. I tried a few samples, and asked the guy which flavors are the best. He recommended a couple, and I ended up buying one. I can't remember the exotic name of it, but it was real creamy and rich. It was one of the premium, more expensive flavors. The other flavors I tasted weren't as good, however.. so be careful. The decor is quite cool with colorful barstool seating. I'm giving this place 5 stars because it is unique, and the ice cream I had was quite good. Whoaaaaaaaa! Ice cream two days in a row! Ever since we've left the Bay Area I've been searching for Indian ice cream. After Fosselman's yesterday I thought this is as good as it's going to get down here and then Mike L introduces us to Saffron Spot. I was thrilled beyond belief!! I like cardamom ice cream the best and they didn't have a specific one labeled just cardamom. However, the guy told me that several of the selections did include cardamom and after sampling a few flavors, I settled on Rajbhog. Yes it's a weird name and it had saffron, pistachios in it as well, but it was awesome!! I got a scoop of that. I also got a hot chai and it was excellent. Mm! We originally were looking for a shaved ice spot other than mediocre Guppy's and came across Saffron Spot We had no idea what to order so tried samples of just about every flavor. We ended up getting the 4 flavors on a bed of rice noodles topped with some kind of seed. (forgot the name) We ended up getting sitaphal, mango, pistachio, and rose. I really enjoyed all of their unique flavors. Sitaphal - milky, creamy, almost caramel like Mango - It tastes like a frozen ripe mango..none of that artificial stuff Pista - damn.. best pistachio ice cream I've had in years.. almost bubble gum flavor Rose - mild and delicately flavored.. I'm not sure what kind of seed they put on top but it adds texture and makes it more interesting. The rice noodles... ehh I'm not crazy about it. So many unusual things to try on the menu from the ice cream flavors to the various types of sundaes, juices, hot drinks, cold drinks...I love coming to a place and being overwhelmed by novel choices. Even better when they are absolutely delicious novel choices served by friendly staff. The owner of the shop actually is hard at work manning the place herself. When I was in there on a Saturday the place was bustling. So many friendly happy customers coming in and out. I tried the falooda Sundae which consisted of 4 mini scoops of ice cream over rice vermicelli noodles drizzled with rose syrup and topped with basil seeds. I've been obsessed with basil seeds lately. I love the use them here. These particular variety of seeds are gelatinous and when they come in contact with water they becoming gummy and float. They have a fun chewy gooey, crunchy texture; kinda like chia seeds. The vermicelli..so hard for me not to make the mental reference to the noodles used for laksa style curry dishes and think of these in terms of dessert but with the utilization of the rose syrup it helps make that transition a bit easier. The noodles sop up the rosé syrup nicely and the whole thing isn't overly sweet. The ice cream flavors were so much fun! I had the mawa which is condensed milk and caramel but Indian style, chikoo which is a type of indigenous fruit, rajbhog which consisted of saffron, cardamom, pistachio's, cashews and almonds, and the saffron silk which is saffron, rose and pistachio. The flavors change every so often so there are lots of tasty new combinations to look foreword too on my next visit. Since I had a long drive home I picked up a masala milk to go. No caffeine it's just steamed milk with cardamom and her special masala mix of minced nuts: pistachio, almonds and cardamom. So delightful! read more

I wanted to give this place a try because the pictures caught my attention. I had no idea it was Indian ice cream until I went there. I also have a coupon for buy 1 get 1 free so I had to give it a try :) My bf and I both got the Ice cream falooda which was around $5 and I got a choice of 3 scoops. I got the rose, lychee and the pistachio. The rose was pretty good and the pistachio was TOO sweet for my taste. My favorite flavor had to be lychee. I don't think I would come back for a scoop just because $3 is pretty expensive unless I was craving for it. read more

I'm so bummed I had to miss the tasting event but I was able to make a little side trip of my own. If you like Indian desserts in general you will totally love the sweets at this little spot. And, it is little. It's a tight squeeze between the ice cream case and the window side counter. I've only tried the rose, chocolate, and rahjbog? flavors and I liked them all. The only things I didn't quite fancy were the fact that the ice cream tended to be on the super sweet side and the available seating was cramped and pretty limited for groups pf 3 or more. I'll definitely be back to try the other yummy goodies noted in previous yelps. 8/30 update: So, I went back with the fam and a friend. Since I had already tried the ice cream, and my girls were getting ice cream again and I'd probably have to pitch in with clean up, I figured this would be a good opportunity to try something different. I had already read a couple of cheers for the Malai Gola, so not knowing what at all to expect, I went ahead and ordered one and if I didn't like it so much, the Mr. was getting the other half anyway. After the first spoonfull, I knew I had found my favorite. I consciously had to remind myself that I was sharing so as not to devour the whole thing. I think it's one of his faves, too, now. Basically, it's a banana split container packed with a mound of shaved ice and topped with a light rose syrup, I think, a lightly spiced sweet cream, and crushed pistachios with possibly other nuts. It tastes a lot like the rhajbog but it's so light and refreshing. With the good, of course, comes the bad...compared to the various Asian shaved ice dishes, the Malai Gola doesn't have as fine a shave and it is notably smaller, so definitely get your own. read more

Just be aware that there are no bathrooms in the actual ice cream parlor available to customers...and on with the review. The unique flavors make my curiosity all kinds of crazy. I acquiesced to it and tasted 2 of the flavors, including saffron and tutti frutti. I was hoping for a scoop of a flavor that isn't offered as typical ice cream fare. After much discussion with my friend of Indian descent, I was convinced that tutti frutti was a viable choice as it is apparently a popular flavor in India. I'm not much for creamy ice cream and this had the consistency of the Turkish ice cream I had in Istanbul. It was stretchy and when you took a bite, it would snap off. As an Indian American growing up an LA county and not too far from Artesia, I can say with authority that for years and years and years and years, Indian places have generally fallen into a few narrow categories: 1. Jewelry shops 2. Restaurants 3. Grocery stores 4. Sari 'palaces' (yeah, is it really a palace?) 5. Henna tattoo parlors Enter Indian ice cream shop! Nice! Finally something different. And they've got the flavors you probably grew up on if you grew up in an Indian family. Or, if you're just interested in the culture, it's got a wonderful sampling of all the classic flavors. Let me just say being half indian has its perks when you roll into Artesia. Although i never sport the Dhoti I think I can blend in well enough to get the bigger scoops of Kulfi. Saffron spot is amazing, I have never been able to go to a "Kulfi parlor" before and get it fresh. My normal Kulfi experience involves going to some indian grocer and buying 3 containers of the stuff in hopes that one won't be icy. This place is very consistent and has unique flavored ice cream. I think they should remodel or reorganize the interior of their retail space because people always get squished in front of the ice cream display, whereas the entire hallway is always empty. I found out that you're able to get a small scoop ($2.95) with half and half, which is two flavors of your choice. I ended up trying the Cashew Raisin last night and it was pretty good. I found Saffron Spot on Yelp because I was tired of going to the Artesia Yogurtland all the time and I wanted something different. It sure was different! Saffron Spot is a relatively small space. Also, there are a lot of Indian people. Duh. You're in Little India. I don't mind that, but what I do mind is all the workers that ignore the three kids walking in. Dare I say... three Asian kids in a predominantly Indian area? -_- Though the decorations of the room were okay, there was no hello or friendly demeanor or offer to have me try anything until I asked.That stinks of bad service and costs you a star. Being new to the whole Indian flavor thing, I asked for recommendations and got some samples! Free samples! Yay! I got the saffron flavor. I have never had straight up saffron, so I don't know how it's supposed to taste, but this ice cream was delicious. I can't say anything about the authenticity of the flavor, but there were bits of pistachios in the orange ice cream, and there was a taste that tasted exactly like what rose water smells like. Rose flavor, I know. The consistency was thick and creamy, and I can't explain it but when you get some on your spoon, the piece snaps off cleanly. The price is obviously more than your average McDonald's cone or Yogurtland bucket. Justified by the exotic-ness and handmade nature of the ice cream? I don't know. Ice cream is good, unique classic indian flavors... Now, their yelp advertising is a dissapointment. I checked in on my phone on yelp and their check in special was a "free miniscoop with purchase of other scoop". I ordered my ice cream and ordered a miniscoop. HYe said "we don't have a miniscoop, only a 1 scoop" and gave me another 1 scoop. When I showed him the coupon on my phone he said "oh, that miniscoop" and put the one he had away literally took out a tasting spoon size and put that in a small cup for me. Come on now!! Tasters are free, first off, so don't insult me by giving me a taster. And why did he have to lie and tell me there was "no miniscoop" until I showed him the free coupon and he then all of a sudden discovered a new miniscoop. So, their yelp advertising is a complete cheat!! Huge Cheat. Very dissapointing. I've been going here for years and will continue to go here since the ice cream is good but those who run this place and those who go should know of their VERY shady advertising schemes!! This place offers delicious Indian desserts and they remind me of when I'm back in India every single time! Their Rose Falooda is delicious and so are their varieties of ice cream. When you first enter Saffron Spot, you're greeted with a sense of curvy color. The chairs are rounded. The eating area jutting from the walls are rounded and the colors are just bright and cheerful: purple, orange, and yellow. The interior was just as colorful as the array of ice creams for sale. As for the ice cream flavors, there was everything from mango to pistachio, but there were also more exotic flavors like chikoo, kulfi, saffron and rose. I opted for a double scoop of the chikoo and kulfi. Chikoo is made from an Indian fruit called sapota and when I first took a taste, it kind of reminded of prunes and licorice. I know that sounds weird, but I really liked it. It was just different. Kulfi is made from cream, milk, and sugar and this ice cream was really dense. It took extra effort to even scoop it into my cup, but once it melted a bit, it was rich and creamy. Apparently, kulfi can be flavored also with mango, saffron, rose, but all they had available was the plain version and I was fine with that. Someone else got a double scoop of the rose ice cream and the lychee ice cream and I had a little taste of them both and really liked them as well. I really enjoyed these ice creams. The ice cream is different from American ice cream in that I found them to be richer, a little heavier. Indian ice creams are also similar to Iranian ice creams in that you can get them with faloudeh (which are normally rice or wheat noodles) and also basil seeds. When I first experienced the faloudeh and the basil seeds at Mashti Malone's, I wasn't quite sure if I liked the "eating texture" of them both with ice cream, but I have to say that over time, it has kind of grown on me. It's not something I'd order each and every time, but at least I know that if I want something different, I do indeed have options.
