I have an upcoming trip to New Zealand and was looking for a preview of the food and this spot did not disappoint. Have been here twice now and it's easily one of my current favorite places in the valley. Fish and chips are good, meat pies are good, desserts are good. I'm a big fan of dessert, so when I saw photos of the Lamington, Sagato immediately went on my "must try" list. It did not disappoint. The case was lovely and well-stocked. They have Polynesian plates (similar to L&L or Mo Bettah), which I'd like to go back to try. I worry about the location of this little gem of a spot. Took my dad to get a haircut and pick up some reading glasses which are all next to Shane Co and then my buddy ends up telling me about this place and it has been there for a while. This place serves food from Samoa that are also found in New Zealand and even Australia. The pies were fantastic, loved the flavors and flakey crust. Although I do like the ones in Australia better these were a close 2nd. They also serve Hawaiian style plate lunches which had ample portions! What was lacking in my no so humble opinion are the desserts looked delectable but tasted average. My palate is used to a bit more sweetness and these didn't do it for me. HOT DAMN This place is good!!!! I was in the area and had to stop in to check out the hype. The hype with this bakery is the meat pies. My experience here in Utah has not been so great with meat pies, but Sagato NAILED IT!!! The crust is flaky, lightly buttered and oh so delicious! Meat pies are exactly that. A meat pie....AND...there's cheese in it! I ordered the steak meat pie and wished I ordered the chicken and mince pies! There's always tomorrow! First bite made me want to look for hot sauce, but the second bite is the one that brought all the flavors together. The "gravy" is really good and the little bite of cheese provides the bit of salt I needed! I also ordered their whipped cream strawberry Nutella donut looking pastry. It looked pretty and that was the only reason I picked it, and I'm glad I did. The cashier recommended it and told me I wouldn't regret it! She was right. It's enough cream, strawberries and Nutella in each bite! And the best part of it was that it's not too sweet! To wash it all down, I ordered their hot chocolate. Although not sweet, which I prefer, I didn't like the bits of chocolate in my drink. It had a nutty texture and taste. You can't help but to see what you're chewing on. I saw this place on Instagram and immediately wanted to try because I really like Hawaiian/Polynesian food. I would say out of all the things I tried, I really enjoyed the meat pie! If I come here again, I'd like to try more of the pies than the pastries. The guava cake and bundt cake were pretty decent! I wasn't a fan of all the cream though. The lunch plate was a little disappointing because the teriyaki sauce was thick and goopy. The beef was also a more fatty cut of meat. Other than that, the rice was honestly cooked to perfection and the Mac salad was great. The interior of the cafe is so cute and honestly Instagram worthy. And the people at the counter were so nice. Sagato is a place that will never disappoint you. Juicy meat pie, scrumptious desserts, and satisfying meal combos! I have tried all the meat pies but my personal favorite is always the classic Steak & Cheese pie. Flaky crispy crust filled with melty cheesy cheese and "moist" meat. One solid quality pie! For the meal combo, I always like the teriyaki chicken and Kuala pork with macaroni salad. I have tried teriyaki beef but teriyaki chicken is just my favorite. 2 big pieces of tender juicy chicken marinated in teriyaki sauce. But the Kuala pork is always 80% are juicy and 20% are dry. So it is ok for me. I am not usually fan of macaroni salad because my onion pickiness. I do enjoy their macaroni salad because there's no onion for very few green onion. And their sauce is not that heavy. Since their food is always so heavy, I never have the room for dessert. So I only tried their dessert once and it was koko samoa bundt cakes. Succulent chocolate cake with dark rich chocolate filling in the middle. I wish I can describe the whipped cream's taste for you but I was devouring the cake way too fast and I forgot to take my time to taste the whipped cream. When I first discovered Sagato Bakery, I have wanted to try them. I don't live nor work nearby and then the quarantine started. A few weeks ago I was going to be driving near the area, so I hopped online and placed an order for curbside pickup. We were thrilled that we did. We were joined by my foodie sister so we tried a wide variety of the meat pies and a couple of sweet pastries. The crust of every meat pie was flakey and delicious. On our first round we tried the steak and cheese, mince and cheese, steak and mushroom, and sausage rolls (we would have tried more, but they were already sold out of others). We liked everything we tried and I can't wait to try others! For the pastries we had the pineapple handpie, Koko Samoa bundt cake, and Pani Popo. The Koko Samoa was moist, chocolaty, and satisfying with nothing not to like there. It was the Pani Popo that really got me. Sitting in a luscious bath of coconut cream, we peeled off layer by layer of the moist roll and sighed with each bite. With that they sealed my being hooked. I now have to try the rest of the menu. We got pork buns which tasted really good- the bread reminded me of the inside of a doughy pretzel and I liked the pork's sauce. We stopped here yesterday afternoon for a quick bite in between sightseeing activities. It's in a strip mall and the place itself is nondescript though there is a lovely mural on the wall. We ordered two meat pies (steak & cheese; sausage), a koko samoa, and a strawberry lamington. Sweet treats are better than savory ones. The pies had decent crusts but the steak meat was chewy and the sausage was unappetizing. We loved the flavors on the samoa cake, but it crumbled every time one of us tried to take a forkful and was a bit dry overall. The lamington was a surprise hit: a simple vanilla cake with great consistency and a nice strawberry glaze with coconut. Coffee was dirt out of a pot and service was OK. Kind of bummed that this was our only bakery experience in SLC, but you win some and you lose some. read more

Their keke pua'a (in literal terms it means cake pig) or "manapua" as I call it because I grew up in Hawaii tasted delicious.. just like on the islands. This is probably the best bakery that I've been to in Utah. I love how all of the pastries are Polynesian style. I tried their potatoe pie, steak & cheese, and the strawberry Nutella cream puff. All were very good! My favorite is probably the steak & cheese pie. The savory pies all had a crispy flakey crust that I love. The cream puff was yummy without being overly sweet. I thought thought that service was really good as well! Everyone was really nice and there was always someone at the front counter, which I find worth pointing out because at most places the staff would just go to the back room. Lots of seating and it's clean! There's no WiFi here so you probably can't do any studying if you need the internet. I love Polynesian food so much that when I heard of Sagato Bakery & Cafe I knew I had give it a try. I was specifically excited about the savory pies and rolls. I got there right around opening time and there happened to be a little rush. They hadn't placed the savory items in the case yet, but all of them were made and ready to go. They had the labels in the case so I was able to use those to pick what I wanted. I ordered the Chicken Curry, Minced Meat, Steak & Cheese (I actually ordered the Steak & Mushroom one but ended up with this one), and a Sausage Roll. Firstly, I want to mention that the customer service was great. They were super helpful in helping me decide which pies to get. And they warmed up my pies before I left. I actually really enjoyed all the pies I got! The Steak & Cheese pie was maybe my least favorite, but I still inhaled it. The Chicken Curry was probably my favorite, and tied for second place are the Minced Meat and Sausage Roll. The pastry outside was crisp, buttery, and flakey. Given the savory, hearty fillings I liked that the pastry was sturdy but still light and fairly thin. All the fillings were rich in flavor and completely craveable. The pastries were filling and the perfect comforting snack, or meal. The pastries were roughly $5-$6, I thought the price matched the quality and that it was completely worth it. I've come here a few times now for a couple meat pies or pastries. This last time I got the 3-meat plate, with green salad instead of macaroni salad or rice, and WOW do they give you a great portion of meat! It was so good. The Kalua pork is the best, the chicken is so perfect, the beef is a little sweet but yummy. I also tried one of the pork buns (Kekepua'a this time), which was good. I've liked every single meat pie I've had there, which is, you know, like every flavor. I love the curry chicken pie, and the steak and mushroom/cheese pies are super good too. My favorite pastry there is the Lamington, followed closely by the Koko Samoa Bundt Cake. The Fruit Tart and Custard Tart are pretty good too, but now that I've tried them, I'm gonna stick with my favorite 2 :p I used to go in the morning when I visited the chiropractor at 9am. I was sad when the opening hours moved back to 10am, but it's ok, it's probably better for my diet. (Or, I go to the chiropractor later in the morning!). The cafe itself is cute. I wish they weren't so far away from me, BUT the drive is worth it! If you had to eat a bite, please order the following: The Desserts: Strawberry Nutella Cream Puffs It tastes amazing as it sounds! The perfect ratio of fruit to chocolate to cream. What makes the entire thing is the delicious pillowy dough baked just right, maybe just a tad underdone, but not so offensive I didn't just eat it all up and lick my fingers. Lamingtons Delicious, in fact the flavor explosion of that butter cake flavor accompanied by the coconut and surprise of cherry are all just a harmony of flavors that work deliciously. It's decadent, it's moist, and it's heavy. Everything is delicious from when you look at it, the first bite, but the after math is a little surprising. There was a coat of oil in my mouth that I wasn't expecting. I couldn't help but think, there's a lot of...well...oil? The Savory: Kekepua'a - it's a steamed bun stuffed with savory meat. It's heart-warming, the flavor profile is on point, it reminds me of home (we have a similar dish in the Philippines) but the bun was a little bit dry. The overall experience was fair, but very comparable to what I get in Asian markets. They're not bad, I'll probably go back if I'm craving a taste from home, so if you're making the drive, order something you typically wouldn't eat and it'll be worth your time. My suggestion to the establishment? Focus on a few baked goods and execute them very well, I feel like they've spread themselves thin by cooking SO many baked goods all done mediocrely, SO many savory options including platters. I stopped here around noon last Saturday, one day after their grand opening. It was packed! There was a long line, and I waited about 20 minutes to order. As they had just opened, though, I was not too perturbed, and it warmed my heart to see such a sweet community gathering in support. The bakery case was mostly empty, but every few minutes someone would exit the kitchen bearing a tray of sweets - they simply could not keep up with the demand! This is okay as I likely would have ordered one of everything, but instead was forced to select just three baked goodies: Chocolate cookie: Rich and brownie-esque, but not amazing Guava Cake: Extremely moist, with a tartness that I appreciated, though I am coming to terms with the fact that guava cake may not be my thing. Lamington: Filled with that weird fake whipped cream that was a popular topping on cakes of my youth, the cake itself was moist, the chocolate coating delicious, and I loved the coconut. I would definitely get this again, and simply remove the filling. Beyond the treats (oh and note, along with the sugary baked items they also sell meat pies and sausage rolls, they'd just had an equipment failure so none were available) they have actual meals billed as New Zealand style. I have previously only tried the very similar Hawaiian variety, and while Sagato's consisted of the same components (meat, rice, and mac salad) it was far superior to my other experiences. I ordered the two meat plate with Teri Beef and Kalua Pig (there is also a Teri Chicken option). Both meats were moist and tender, the beef with a sweet flavor that reminded me of jerky, and the pork mild, but delicious, and not too salty. The rice was cooked perfectly, and either seasoned well, or simply soaked up enough of the sauce from the meats to be tasty on its own. I am not a fan of mac salad, but theirs wasn't dripping in mayo, so I actually enjoyed a couple bites. Portions are HUGE and that was enough to, along with the baked goods, serve as lunch for both my husband and myself. Prices, especially considering portion size, were great: around $10 for meals, and $2-$4 for treats. Drinks were limited to a few bottled and canned beverages. The space was very clean and attractive enough, with subway tile, and a huge mural along one wall, paired with coordinating paintings on the other. Not only were they inundated with customers and having appliance trouble in the kitchen, the credit card processing system was wonky, only allowing them to type in the numbers instead of swiping. For an established business all these issues would have been frustrating, but considering they've just opened (and openings always seem to be rife with challenges), it instead allowed me to see their cool attitude in the face of difficulty. I cannot imagine the stress all the sweet women taking orders and payment were under, but they handled it like champs, with a cheery disposition and plenty of smiles.
