But I did take…read morean outdoor yoga class with them that met at Flat Fork Creek Park in the outskirts of Fishers (almost Fortville). What a great class, for many reasons. First, the instructor. I believe her name was Martha. Her cues were so clear that I never had to look at her -- I could just close my eyes and focus on myself and the flow. She also cued some interesting and slightly challenging poses, which I enjoyed. Second, the class itself. This outdoor class that I got to experience on a beautiful and auspicious morning was completely free. Free! I didn't even have to register online or anything. I just showed up to the park, climbed to the top of a hill, and placed my yoga mat down on the grass. I think it is so cool, and so in the spirit of yoga, that Roots and Wings offers free outdoor yoga classes to the community. Talk about spreading good vibes! Roots and Wings is practicing what they are preaching. Third, this class that I took was not a one-off. They offer free outdoor classes all summer, plus some in the fall. I will definitely be joining some of the other classes they are offering, and also visiting them in the studio at some point. I can already tell that these guys are my kind of people.

I'm right there on the border of being fine with incense and it triggering a headache, but fortunately, it wasn't in the room that we practiced in, just the lobby. I visited Flourish for a hot yoga class with Jessi, and it was amazing! I practice yoga every day, but I only do hot yoga every once in a while, so it's a treat when I do. I always forget how light and cleansed I feel when I leave a hot yoga class. Our class was a vinyasa flow class, with balancing poses and other things added throughout. It was challenging, yet accessible, and we were always encouraged to listen to our bodies and take breaks when we needed to. I took a couple of water breaks and wipe-the-sweat-off breaks during the class, because hot yoga demands it of me. I sweat too much to just power through. The end of class was my favorite. During savasana, when we were lying on our mats and meditating, Jessi came around and put eye mask on our eyes and gave us a little head massage. It was so nice! I always love when instructors adjust me or put their hands on me in some way. It really connects me to the class and my practice. They have hot yoga classes, which is what I attended, but also warm yoga and non-heated yoga classes. I appreciated that they offered all kinds of options.

I attended Baptiste Power Yoga (now called Fire & Flow Yoga --…read morethey recently changed their name!) on an auspicious day: International Day of Yoga, which also happens to be summer solstice. On this very special day, they were offering a two-hour class where we would be doing 108 sun salutations. I didn't know if I could do that many sun salutations in a row. I was a little bit anxious because I not only didn't know if I could do 108 sun salutations without injuring myself or fainting, but also, I had never been to Fire & Flow, so I didn't know the studio or anyone there. But yoga people are my people, so I went with it and trusted the universe. When I arrived, I was treated like a regular, and everyone was super friendly. I got a little tour of the studio and got to check out the amenities. It's a small but very clean and functional studio, and they offer coffee and tea complimentary, and juice and other drinks to purchase. There are water stations to fill up your water bottle, restrooms, cubbies and a community kitchen where you can hang out. Because this was a long and special class, there were a few different instructors leading, and each brought a different energy to the group. They played uplifting music during the sun salutations, which helped keep up the momentum. At the end of the class, we were brought cold towels that smelled like lavender to put over our eyes while we meditated, and it was honestly the best thing I've experienced all week. I loved my first class at Fire & Flow, and I want to come back to experience a more "regular" yoga class! This place is so welcoming and warm, and I can't wait to visit again.

Non-heated vinyasa classes! It's surprisingly difficult to find a vinyasa class in central Indiana…read morethat isn't hot yoga. Everyone wants hot yoga, apparently, but I just want to be present on my mat without thinking about the sweat running down my face and pooling in my sports bra. Union Yoga & Wellness offers non-heated vinyasa, which is why I visited. It was just what I needed after a long week. Yoga is a big part of my life. I practice every day! When I can, I love visiting new yoga studios to see what the vibe is elsewhere. This yoga studio is a bit of a drive from where I live, but I liked it a lot, and I could see myself visiting for an occasional class. They offer sound baths, too. I've recently discovered the restorative nature of sound baths, so I'll be back to check one out. The people who work here are so kind and welcoming. They explained how to check in, where to put my stuff and where the restroom and practice room is. (It's a small studio, so there's one main room to practice in.) It's a small studio, but it's extremely clean, has lots of natural light coming through the windows, and it smells heavenly in there. Orange blossoms, maybe? My instructor, Jessica, was great and led us through a beautiful flow. It was a good balance of restorative and challenging, and I left the class feeling amazing. I came for the non-heated vinyasa, but they also offer heated vinyasa flow classes, as well as gentle yoga, sculpt yoga and restorative yin yoga. They also have $10 community yoga classes (their regular drop-in price is $24). This is awesome and I'll definitely be back for one of these budget-friendly classes in the future.

Just got back from an evening slow flow class, and I still have that post-yoga buzz. Part of it…read moremight be because I'm dehydrated -- I sweated a lot! Supposedly, the room is kept at 90 degrees, and I could feel all 90 degrees. I'm not used to practicing hot yoga, and I don't think it will be a daily part of my practice, but it's nice to know that The Yoga Studio offers such a nice space for hot yoga when the mood strikes me. The instructor, Rick, was great. It was my first time visiting, so we chatted outside of the yoga room about what to expect: In his class, he starts with a led Sun Salutation A, then lets you go on your own, then a led Sun Salutation B, then lets you go on your own. The second half of the class is a fully led practice, with lots of variety. The room is small, but apparently they can fit 25 people in it! My class only had 12, so there was plenty of room. The room itself is clean and dark, with a couple of salt lamps around. It's a quiet, contemplative space to practice. There are showers here, too, as well as a room for cycling. The people who work here are very welcoming! Like I said, it was my first time visiting, and I got nothing but love from everyone. The Yoga Studio is a great place to practice yoga, and I'll definitely be back.

I've tried this place twice now and found both experiences lacking. The most recent time I went…read morethe music was super loud and the instructor was very quiet, which made it super easy to get lost. Additionally there were several poses called out with different names than what I've encountered with other instructors at several different studios or while doing yoga at home with Apple Fitness. Lastly, we went through a flow once or twice and then the instructor pretty much said keep doing it on your own without any further instructions for a few minutes. I felt bad for the two new students next to me who kept looking over to me to check their form. If you enjoy a hot space and freedom to do whatever flow you'd like, then this place might be good for you, but I was not a fan.

Anna has since opened SageHouse Yoga in Carmel, and Georgia is teaching here, along with a number of other great instructors. How wonderful to have a yoga studio with such amazing people leading it! SageHouse is a beautiful space, with three different rooms designed for different types of yoga. They offer hot yoga and regular (unheated) yoga, which is great. My personal preference is regular unheated yoga, which I would have signed up for but the class was booked very quickly. So I took a heated class, which was held in the Sun Room, where the temperature was set to around 100 degrees. Georgia was our instructor. I have never sweated so much during a hot yoga class in my life! I loved the class, and left feeling purified and light as a feather. Georgia is such a great instructor -- she challenged us but also constantly reminded us that this was our practice, and we could take a break or modify if we needed to. One thing to keep in mind, if you take a hot yoga class here: If the class is full (which is probably will be), the mats will be very close together! They have tape on the floor to indicate where mats should be placed, and there is no extra room to spread your arms out. It is what it is. I'm used to practicing in a space where there is more room between me and my neighbor, so it was a little different to be so close to everyone. One of the things that I loved about the hot yoga class at SageHouse is that during savasana, they put a cold towel over your eyes, if you want. (And if you don't want, you can indicate that by putting your hands on your body.) It felt so nice to feel that coolness on my face as I relaxed after an intense class. I'm definitely returning to SageHouse Yoga to take more classes! What a great space to practice yoga, with great teachers to guide you along the way.

I've NEVER liked working out and have NEVER committed myself to a fitness routine. I did show choir…read morein high school and I enjoyed the dance aspect, so I Googled around for "dance fitness" classes near me in Carmel. Revel Fitness popped up and I had never heard of it. After scanning the website, I decided to check it out the next day, since the first class is free. After one class, I signed up for a membership ($39/month) and I've been to at least 2 classes a week since joining, if not 4-5 - which is unheard of for me. I like it THAT much. Revel's studio is within Primelife Enrichment in Carmel, but the clients are all ages. From my first class (Zumba with Erin) I felt welcomed and accepted. Each instructor has noticed I'm "the new kid" and gone out of their way to introduce themselves and welcome me to class. Revel is full of regulars but everyone has been friendly and many have asked my name and welcomed me to Revel. This is a community that I don't think I'd find at a larger studio or gym. Going to the gym in general has always made me feel uncomfortable, but here I can dance without worrying about how I look. I can just focus on having fun. This place checks off all the things on my list. It's close to where I live, affordable, welcoming and offers a variety of classes (Zumba, Pound, TurboKick, LaBlast). I actually look forward to my workouts and can't wait to continue my fitness journey with Revel!
