A very no-frills restaurant, but you actually get a good value for your money spent. We found this place by accident, and have been to it quite a few times since. If you're looking for Lebanese this place is excellent. I usually get the meat combo dinner platter which is always cooked very well and has an excellent flavor. The baba ganouj is very good as well. It is a straight forward restaurant so if you're looking for dazzling presentation this isn't the place but if you want very well done Lebanese food. This is the place. I liked the hummus, but the chicken shawarma with rice was really flavorless, and had some pieces that were hard to chew?? The white sauce was also gritty for some reason. This is one of my favorite restaurnts in the area. Love the food - the best Baba Ganouj I've had (and better than my own). My favorite is the Vegetarian Platter, but I've tried almost everything else as I've been coming here since it opened. Friendly service.The newer managment has improved the food a little over the old and there are more choices (and wonderful desserts). The new decor is more comfortable over the old. This is kind of an exotic oasis in an area overrun with Chinese, Pizza and chain sub shops. I'm certainly no Lebanese cuisine expert, but I enjoy the Shwarmas and the kabob sandwiches for lunch. Tasty and fresh, either to go or eat in. Ambience... yeah, not so much, but the prices are extremely reasonable for overpriced and decidedly mediocre Montgomery Township. Finally a Mediterranean restaurant with Mediterranean owners!!! The food here is great, and as authentic as you can get. All their food is made from scratch and in house. Small restaurant but great family owned environment. Their grape leaves are very good. I got the mix platter as my main dish and everything was cooked perfectly and not too well done. Given the limited choices in the area my co-worker and I were excited to try this place out for lunch. Nice set up and change of pace from the Asian cuisine we normally have. The veggie platter was pretty good and plenty to share between two as an appetizer. The menu is confusing as the sandwiches they have listed are exactly what the appetizer is and some don't make sense like grape leave sandwich - which would be grape leaves in a pita.. just not right. Since I am vegetarian I got the baba sandwich and unfortunately it was OVERLOADED with baba and then had some lettuce and tomato. Will come back and try again, probably stick to falafel. I have had a lot of middle eastern food and to be honest for the prices being so high I expected way more quality. Plus the dude was pretty rude and didn't listen to my order. Great local Lebanese and better than others I have been to recently. Went here on a Wed. evening and the place was pretty busy. The baklava is to die for...best I have tasted this side of the pond. I had the chicken kebab platter. The chicken is great and the tabbouleh salad that came with it wonderful. We had a side of pita, hummus and falafel. My wife had stuffed grape leaves which were so so and the vegetarian platter which was good. We came with our 10 month son and the place is pretty child firendly. Will be back...many times probably. Cost us about $50 in total, which I guess is OK value. read more

Less than a year ago, I wrote a positive review of Sahara. Sorry to say, things were quite different on a recent visit. As usual, we each had the vegetarian combination plate, and quite a few items were well below acceptable quality. First, the Mujaddara was tasteless! Then, the string beans also lacked flavor, and the onions on them, an important part, were overcooked, tough, and inedible. The falafel did not taste fresh and were dry and ordinary. The service was indifferent, and the entire meal was a disappointment. We will not be back soon. read more

There isn't too much in the area for Middle Eastern cuisine, so finding this little Lebanese place was great. The food is really good and generally reasonably priced - lunch sandwiches are a little cheaper but dinner platters are priced a little high. The gyro meat in particular is fantastic and there is a good variety of desserts. One downside is that it is occasionally staffed by a single teenage waiter, so service suffers. I usually get take-out though and don't care as long as I get my gyro... Yum! read more

We are locals and have been coming here for nearly 27 years. Yes, it's true! And it keeps getting better. They added a lot to the menu which has a broad selection of middle eastern food. Everything is exceedingly fresh and simple. and portions are generous. The staples of the veggie combo (baba ganoush, hummus, falafel, and Tabouleh) and spanakopita are still fabulous. This is a review of their takeout lunch. I placed an order by phone for: 2 large falafel wraps, 1 babaganoush, 1 eggplant salad, 1 hummus, 1 country salad (tomato salad). The woman who took my order was friendly and they were very nice when I pick it up. Everything was delicious! The hummus and salads were so tasty. The falafel sandwich was a nice size (large size) and I had only half and the other half the next day. My parents enjoyed the food too. I don't visit often because I have always thought the prices were a bit too high but I guess you get what you pay for :-) I hope to return soon! read more

This used to be a good restaurant which we looked forward to frequenting. We went there last night and were very disappointed. The service was inattentive - had to flail my hands to attract someone's attention even though there was almost no one in the restaurant and three waiters looking bored. One of the dishes we ordered was inedible. It was already fermented probably after having spent too much time unrefrigerated. When I finally was able to attract the attention of a waitress telling her that the dish was inedible, she simply shrugged and started walking away. I had to call her back to ask her to take the barely touched dish away. Not only was there no apology but to add insult to injury they charged me for the spoiled dish. What a pity that Sahara has deteriorated to this extent. We will not go back. read more

I love this restaurant! My family and I have have been going there for years and I simply cannot get enough of it! The food is excellent, and the service is great. Everyone there is very friendly. I would give this place a 3.5 IF there was any other decent place around for middle eastern food, but none exists. So , based on what I had tonight for dinner, I'll gladly go back. I got a shish kebab sandwich which was quite decent, and a rice pudding which was delicious, like really really good! Other menu items were a bit overpriced, but no too much. Sandwiches are mostly $8 for their large size, which was quite big. The entree's were in the $15~$20 range, and the salads are typically $7. I was surprised that I couldn't have my dinner sandwich there, as apparently sandwiches are only available for dine in before 4 PM, so I had to take out. Still, good food. When travelling I always look for Middle Eastern Restaurants. I chose Sahara, not only because of its enticing dinner menu, but because they make my absolute favorite dessert, Kunafah, which is a rare find in restaurants. We were a group of 4 and were warmly welcomed and shown to a booth. Everything was spectacular. Portions are very generous, enough so we ate to our fill and still had leftovers to enjoy the next day. The Kunafeh is made to order and takes about 15 minutes, so tell your sever if you plan on ordering it ahead of time, so it will be made in time to arrive for dessert, as ours did. It was divine! The service is very warm and attentive. Will definitely go back there if I find myself in that neck of the woods again! read more

I heard from a few friends about this restaurant a while ago so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the meat combination platter with rice. Even though the only option it came with was the tabouleh, the waiter was kind enough to allow me to substitute for the string beans instead. My meal arrived much quicker than I thought, and after the first bite I became addicted ever since. Whenever I have the time, even if I'm alone, I must come to this restaurant. And ever since they redecorated, the place has become that much better. As a person who's been all around Jersey, especially Paterson in North Jersey, I've dined in a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants and I can say without a doubt that this is the BEST Middle Eastern restaurant in New Jersey. In fact, I've even been to Amman, Jordan in the Middle East and I still believe that Sahara is the best when it comes to the food. I've sampled almost everything from the Mujaddarah to the Chicken Barley soup to their delicious baklava and nothing managed to disappoint. My point is, I won't tell you to completely disregard the other reviews because as disrespectful as they are, they're still people who have eaten at this establishment and to my shock, were disappointed. However, I will tell you to take their reviews with a grain of salt and go see for yourself whether or not the food is worth eating because I assume that for every person that thinks these meals are "bad" or "overpriced", there are still hundreds who come every weekend to enjoy this delicious food and I will continue to be one of them. read more

We are long time fans of Sahara since it first opened (20yrs ago??). The current owners have made long overdue updates to the decor and more importantly the menu has many more offerings. We visited last week and had a great meal. Veggie combo can now be customized, also 2 pages of Mezze (appetizers) as small plates or platters. Service was fine even when all tables filled up.
