The whole dish felt dry. The lamb was dry, the falafel was drier than expected, and the pita that I got on the side was quite a bit more dense than it should be. The most unusual thing was the pickled turnip being part of the platter, which I quite liked. Ultimately everything had a good flavor to it, and while the sauce helped alleviate the dryness of the dish, it wasn't nearly enough. It's a no-frills setup, with all orders placed through a self-service kiosk and served to-go (in 'to go' containers with flimsy plastic forks and no knives) even if you plan to eat there. All of the condiments are kept behind the counter, so make sure you order them with your meal. While the kiosk makes it easy to customize your order with with a few taps, it definitely removes some of the personal touch of eating out and it feels more like eating a takeout meal inside the restaurant rather than a proper sit down meal. On our recent visit for a late lunch, I opted for the Falafel Plate ($10), a generous portion of six pieces of freshly made falafel served over salad or rice (or both for a $1 upcharge) with a pita on the side. My dining companion opted for the new Hummus Bowl ($10), two pieces of freshly made falafel served over hummus and topped with onions, tomatoes, pickles, olives, and pita croutons with a pita. Portions are reasonable for the price and the freshness of the ingredients was obvious. Overall, Mamoun's is a decent and affordable spot if you're looking for something fast, tasty, and no-frills while in downtown Princeton, but the casual "to-go" style and basic utensils make it feel a bit less polished than other options in the area. PRO TIP #1: Mamoun's Falafel doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking off Nassau Street and Witherspoon Street. I ordered three sandwiches for myself and two friends. A chicken Shawarma, and two lamb Shawarma's and a small order of hummus. The chicken Shawarma was fine. The lamb Shawarma's had so much gristle and tough, that it was almost inedible. The lamb tasted as though it was left over from a day or two ago. It did not taste fresh. I have had lamb Swarmers from them in the past and it was delicious. When I called to tell them that the lamb was full of gristle, they told me to have a nice day and hung up on me. Mamoun's has pretty decent falafels, not the best I've ever had, but very close. I like that they have several vegan options, which make eating out with non-vegans an easy task. I'm not of fan of the single use plastic cutlery and really wish they had a more environmentally friendly option when dining in. I'm torn between rating this a 3 or 4. It depends on what you're looking for. It's a 4 for those looking for a no frills, budget friendly eatery directly across from Princeton University. The food is fresh and speedy. They have plenty of tables to sit at. All were clean and the atmosphere is fun. Middle Eastern music played in the background and fun photos splashed the walls. What has me torn on the rating is I couldn't easily customize my meal. I wanted the tahini sauce on the side but there wasn't an option to request that. Everything was done via Kiosk in the front. My most recent experience with Mamoun's was a delivery order my partner and I placed after finding out they also do catering. We wanted to try a handful of things to see how they currently are to potentially use them for larger events. Our delivery order showed up very quickly, and we grabbed it right away, so it shouldn't have affected the food at all. First, all of the portions were very small. Our lamb platter was a small foil container that was only about half full, and it was cold. The rice had no flavor, and the lamb was almost all connective tissue or tough as leather. The falafel was also cold, but the flavor and texture were fine otherwise. The baklava was mushy and falling apart when we tried to pick it up, and the order was so small that it was barely two bites for what they charge. The hummus order was literally in a small condiment cup, and by the time we got to it, we barely had interest. We tasted a small bit of it, and realized that it was actually rancid. We will NEVER get food from here again, as it turned my stomach for the rest of the night, and my partner was sick for days afterward. read more
