    Two Lunch Specials
    Brad M.

In the old Palace of Asia location is Zara's Restaurant. Other than adding some Pakistan flags it looks the same as it looked when it was an Indian restaurant. The buffet was $25 and didn't seem to have a lot of options to we opted for the $15 lunch special. It was a pretty good deal because it included an appetizer, entrée, and bread. I enjoyed the spice level of my food and my Pakistani lunch companion said the food was authentic.

Food wise this was close to if not 4 stars, but service and value need to be improved for me to be a fan. At this point I'd probably only return to try the soon to be launched dinner buffet. My first visit was for takeout on a Saturday afternoon. I was the only patron in this cavernous space. I ordered chicken samosas, chicken Hibari and aloo paratha. I was coerced into ordering the bread because I was informed the main dish did not come with rice. The samosas were good, nicely seasoned ground chicken in medium sized pouches. Sauces were the usual tamarind, watery yogurt and a mint one. The entree of chicken hibari was good, boneless mixed chicken in a yellow peppery sauce that may have used puréed lentils. The bread was good too, but seemed to be misnamed, it was more like Roti with potatoes in the middle. I thought the entree portion sized was smaller than my nearest fav Indian place, just a pint sized container. But I liked the flavors and wanted to sample more. A few days later a foodie friend joined me for lunch. Again, no other customers or takeouts it seemed, this was around 2:30 on a weekday. We both ordered from the lunch specials menu which costs $15. She chose chicken Korma, and I had the beef version of the Hibari. She didn't love the veggie Samosa, and I outright disliked the pakora, probably the worst I've experienced. But as a plus, both of our dishes came with rice. She liked the Korma, although it was a much darker and spicier version than I was expecting. I also liked my beef, the sauce was richer than the chicken version too. But sadly, both of these were very small portions containing very little proteins. Hers was just a small drumstick, while I got 2 small cubes of beef. I had a feeling I'd be wanting more food, so we also shared garlic naan, which was good. And an order of chicken biryani, also good. The rice dish suffered the same fate as our entrees, very little chicken. What was in it was bone in, and mostly bone. We ended our meal with a shared Kheer. This was special, very thick and with crushed almond and golden raisins, best item we had here. While eating, I was considering my review and although I liked most of it, the lack of protein in all of our dishes seemed off putting. The service we experienced was friendly but very slow, with no attention to detail. You would think that such a huge place, with no other discernible customers, would try to wow us. Or at least check in from time to time? I had to go search for someone when we wanted the check. I look forward to hearing how the dinner buffet is, based on that I might revisit, 3.5 coulda been better stars

This was one of the best Desi restaurants I've ever been to. Amazing Pakistani cuisine. I haven't head Lahori Chole this authentic in the Princeton area at all. I've been disappointed with the Indian restaurants in the Princeton area because they don't capture Pakistani taste. There is nowhere else closer than South Brunswick that you can get authentic Pakistani dishes like Beef Haleem, Beef Nihari, etc. The Kulcha Naan and Lahori Chole were excellent. The service was top notch and the restaurant is gorgeous, with soaring decorative tray ceilings and chandeliers. It must be at least 5000 square feet.

Karim is located to the right of the market and has about 5 tables for eat in. There is a long freezer case with interesting options and a case of fresh meat as well. Although they offer several well known Indian dishes and a few Chinese ones, I wanted something different. I selected chicken Kadhai and was very happy with it. Also I had the veggie samosas chaat app( although I asked for chicken samosas) and liked that as well. The chaat was a large portion with all kinds of goodies inside, along with a few very good veggie samosas. The entree was even better. It seemed to be a half bird all chopped up, I used my hands to pull all the meat off of the bones. A boneless version is available too. This dark brown rich curry reminded me of butter chicken but with less tomato. The sauce was smooth and delicious, medium heat was verging on spicy for me, but I'll stick with it. A few whole chili peppers were added to it. It didn't come with rice so I ordered garlic naan. The generous amount of garlic was much appreciated and when reheated was a very good naan. This was such a good meal I almost came back a day or 2 after to take advantage of the lunch specials. These come with rice and salad. Rest assured I'll be back very soon, I'll probably get biryani next. 4 stars and climbing.....

Naturally, I had to see what the fuss was about. I ordered takeout because the cars stretched past the entrance way like a metal conga line led by hunger and curiosity . The object of my investigation was Dave's Sliders with fries. The sliders arrived on little potato buns, as if each were the pride of a humble Idaho farmer, topped with kale slaw, pickles, and Dave's sauce. And reader, they were beautiful. Everything worked in harmony. The crisp of the chicken, the brightness of the slaw, the subtle rebellion of the pickles. I chose the "medium" spice level, which turned out to be about as dangerous as a well-mannered librarian. Next time I will go "hot," maybe even "reaper," because if I am going to suffer, I would rather it be for art or poultry. Now, as for the mac and cheese: tragedy, pure and simple. It tasted as though it had been boiled in a space-age pouch, the kind of food that might be served in the afterlife if the afterlife were a public-school cafeteria. It was mac and cheese that had given up on its dreams. Still, the name of the place is Dave's Hot Chicken, not Dave's Existentially Redeemed Macaroni. The chicken was excellent, and that is what matters. So I will give Dave's four stars out of five, because perfection is a myth, and because next time I intend to burn just a little brighter.

I had a platter to go and it was a great amount of food per platter. Loved it. 2) Rice - it is a little bit dry and strong of a taste. 3) Protein - the amount of lamb you get per platter is pretty small. It's mostly rice and veggies. It would be great to have a little bit more of lamb. I would rate the platter 7 out of 10. Thank you for reading this and I hope you find this helpful.

We ordered a pumpkin samsa, an order of beef manti (5 pieces), and the Samarkand plov. The pumpkin samsa was delicate and flaky, with a filling that struck a nice balance of pumpkin and seasonings. The beef manti were exceptional. The dumpling skin was super thin yet held the flavorful broth and tender meat inside. The Samarkand plov came with a generous amount of meat--a mix of beef, lamb, sausage, and two quail eggs. All of the meat was tender and not fatty. If I had to nitpick, I would say there could have been a bit more rice for balance, but at $23 it's hard to complain considering how much meat they give. The restaurant is pretty small but has a warm, inviting ambiance, decorated heavily with traditional Uzbek metalwork and textiles. For two people half of the food was enough to feel full, and we ate the rest for dinner. Altogether the meal came to a little over $50, a great price for the portions and quality. I'm from Queens and Old Bukhara easily stands alongside the best Uzbek spots in Rego Park and southern Brooklyn.
