I moved in the last year and while I'm in a much better place, I miss being near this spot SO MUCH. Their bahn mi is great, I love the crispy duck soup in the winter, and the spring roll vermicelli with shrimp is the perfect light but robust dinner. Definitely worth a stop. First visit to this restaurant. First, it was very clean and had more seating than the store front location appeared to have. Parking is good but you have to be ready to turn off of a very busy highway. Service was quick and helpful. My son has been asking for "soup" since we visited a Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond, VA to meet with his grandfather. Since he was out of school getting braces, I thought I'd spoil him and get him his soup. Saigon is easily the best Pho restaurant in Greenville, SC. Their menu is tremendous, honestly overwhelming. I just describe what I want and the owner takes care of me. To start, I ordered one order of summer rolls which was enough for us to share. For my son's entree I ordered Chicken Pho, she brought it over along with the sprouts, basil, cilantro, etc. She even left out the Jalapeno since he doesn't like spice. For my entree, I asked for Vermicelli with Fried Spring Roll and Shrimp. One of my co-workers introduced me to this dish a few years ago, and it's fantastic. It's cold noodle dish with a vinegar and fish sauce (I think) combination with Shrimp and Fried Spring Roll on top. Add sambal, Sriracha, Hoisin, Fish Sauce and Soy Sauce to your preference and get to work. Don't go for the bubble tea. Awful and way over sweetened. The avocado smoothie is supposed to be from the fruit but it tastes very artificial. I don't know if it was doused in sugar or what but it crazy sweet when avocado smoothies are supposed to have a smooth light taste. I had to throw mine away. If you are a bubble tea lover definitely try somewhere else like pho 99. Also, the service left much to be desired. The lady didn't seem to want to take our order. Pretty good. I had the Beef Pho. Probably the best Pho in the area. The 2 issues relate to the fact that the Pho was not very hot (temp wise) and the accoutrements were withered and the limes were dry. It's a safe bet they were probably at least three days old. read more

This place appears to be a hole in the wall, but it ended up being an incredible dining experience. We ordered takeout and I wish we would have known ahead of time that they charge 1$ extra per entree when ordering out. We ordered the spring rolls (meh) the pad thai (noodles were weird but was very tasty!) the chicken dumplings (so good) the strawberry bubble tea (very sweet and frozen, more like a milkshake than tea) and last not but least, the beef Pho. The Pho is the reason we will come back. It was by far the most memorable soup I've ever eaten. it came in a huge to go container, probably one liter, and then an entire stryfoam togo box full of toppings. Included in the to go box was fresh cilantro, green onion, basil, bean sprouts, jalepeno, lime, and rice noodles. It was absolutely delicious, exactly what I wanted, and definitely hit the spot. First off, the food isn't exactly impressive. Taste wise it was mediocre at best but for the price it wasn't exactly delicious. There was a lot of oil being used in the vermicelli bowls. I know they do use a bit of oil to keep the noodles from sticking to each other, but there was WAY too much oil used in this case. The shrimps I had were big and decent sized but extremely oily. After our meal, we all felt like we needed to detox cuz of how much oil we had just consumed. It almost felt like we had consumed 6 plates full of fried chicken. It was pretty greasy. Secondly, the menu was extremely big, it was literally the size of a textbook. It has 60 some pages. Then again, it could be that it's catered towards more to those who don't know Vietnamese Cuisine, which would make sense as they're really thorough with the menu with having pictures for EVERYTHING that they served with ingredients listed down below. Overall as a customer just by looking at the menu it felt extremely overwhelming. Another thing that was confusing was why banhmi's (Vietnamese sandwiches) were only allowed to be ordered as takeout and not dine in. My only guess was they only wanted customers to dine in and occupy space if you were ordering a certain amount of money of food. Lastly, the atmosphere/interior was very dim and throughout the whole time we were the only customers there...it was extremely silent. The place wasn't exactly SUPER clean, but for an Asian restaurant, my husband and I agreed that it was decently clean. The service wasn't bad, the lady at the counter seemed somewhat polite, tho my husband and I did get a slight annoyed vibe from her as we were flipping through page after page trying to decide what to eat. I mean can you blame us? According to my husband who speaks fluent Vietnamese, the cook kept asking the lady if we were ready to order as if they were going to get super busy and were trying to kick us out before the "rush" came in. Mind you this happened within the first 10 minutes of going in, and the first 5 minutes we didn't even have any menus in front of us. Our conclusion? My husband, my friend and myself both agreed that we wouldn't be visiting this place again, seeing as the food quality and quantity did not hold up to its price value. The customer service wasn't exactly bad, but neither was it the best. Overall, if we could give any suggestions on how it could do better, we would say to try and condense the menu and focus on only a handful of specialties instead of trying to serve almost every thing in Vietnamese Cuisine. read more

The food here is outstanding. Probably the best homemade dumplings I have found at a restaurant. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that this is a mom and pop (literally) shop and it only has 7 or 8 tables with capacity for about 40 people, so if it is crowded, service can be slower or items may be limited. The Bahn Mi sandwiches are to go only, but are very good. This is not a "fast food" type American restaurant but rather a "quick food" Vietnamese restaurant. Don't be fooled by the exterior, it is truly a hole in the wall from the outside. Update: Since posting this review, I have received an email calling me a "c#nt" and telling me I have hormonal issues for posting an honest review. Not sure if it is from staff or a regular, but either way, it has made my opinion of this establishment even lower. I kept my rating the same, but thought people have a right to know what kind of place this is and what kind of people come here. The food was ok. I got the tofu curry and a mango bubble tea. The curry was a bit oily and didnt have many vegetables. Obviously not their specialty. As for the bubble tea, the tapoica beads were hard and didn't sink to the bottom of the drink, which very unappetizing. It was super super sweet and didnt seem to have a mango flavor at all. Gross. In addition to the gross drink and mediocre food, the woman behind the counter was very rude. I am 7 months pregnant and she told me I look "very heavy." Well, obviously. I am not heavy: I am 15 lbs heavier because I am 10 weeks away from having a baby! Not sure why it is such a challenge for some people to follow the golden rule. She then asked if I was having a boy or girl. When I said boy, she proceeded to tell me how boys were better and proceeded with a long drawn out story about how God blessed her with a girl because she prayed often and God listens to those who pray often, inferring I was cursed with a boy because I dont pray... seriously? Greenville has so many restaurants with amazing food run by people who treat others with kindness. Mediocre food and bad service is NOT a good combination. One of the best authentic Vietnamese restaurants in Greenville. You can look beyond the decor, but the service and food are top notch. There's always something special about my glass never being empty, helpfulness in selecting food for the first time in new cuisine, and this family owned business meets all the check marks. Even placing take out orders, they are quick, and plate the food in styrofoam, just as you would get it if you were eating in. My friend Jo and I come here all the time. I've tried the other pho place in gvl and they're ok. but I like Saigon fast food more. My mom and I went in the other day, and she had the grilled pork with rice (pictured above) her chopstick was so fast my camera couldn't catch it! hahaha... she really liked it, and my mom is sooooo picky with her non korean food... and this place made her happy so I am happy. The location of this place can be missed easily if you come here for the first time. Great little restaurant, clean and the owner is very nice. The menu is like a thick book with the first few pages with just the name of the dishes and the next 50 pages with a picture of each dish, some pictures are not very clear but you get the idea. Pho is very tasty with many selections of meat you can choose from. We also ordered some appetizers, the fresh spring rolls are good and the squid is fantastic! goes well with beer. It was the worst customer service I've received in a very long time. The middle-aged lady who took our order was extremely rude and acted like we were inconveniencing her. The "menu" was overwhelming; it was literally a one inch binder with about 50 pages of items. The pho broth was too salty and the pho noodles were still hard. I was driving to meet my study buddy for a school project. My friend asked if I could grab some boba and study snacks. I figured I should try this place (on the recommendation of another friend) since I was in the area. I was not happy with this place when I went. The food is mediocre at best. This easy-going place rates 3.5 stars. I flew into Atlanta today then drove up to Greenville in the afternoon. After a full day of exploring a city I barely know (Atlanta) and a region that I've never been to (Upstate SC) and a city that I've never been to (Greenville), I wanted some kind of "comfort food". I had Thai food (see review for Atlanta's Thai Chili) for lunch so it was Vietnamese this evening. The store sits in a non-descript strip center and imagine my surprise to walk in and find a table full of Filipinos gabbing away. My parents are from the Philippines and I hate running into total Filipino strangers because it never fails that if I look at them, they will proceed to scrutinize me and ask the inevitable question: "Are you Filipino?" I don't think Irish-Americans get this same treatment from Irish immigrants: "Are you Irish?" is hardly what I imagine brogue Irish people ask their American counterparts. What is it about Filipinos that compels them to ask that of others? Okay, end of rant. He. The owner/waitress handed me a menu. Jeez, the thing was like one of your childhood photo albums. Huge! Multiple pages of food listings followed by photo examples of the dishes. I was amazed that she was ready to make any of these items. I quizzed her on whether I should have the pho ga (Viet chicken noodle soup), bun thit nuong (chargrilled pork over vermicelli and salad), or com thit nuong (same pork over just crushed rice). I asked her if her pho ga was really good - she assured me it was. I then ordered an appetizer of cha gio (fried egg rolls), a cafe sua da (iced Vietnamese drip coffee over sweetened condensed milk), and pho ga. The owner asked me how do I know Vietnamese food so well and how did I find her place. In keeping with good Yelp etiquette, I said I loved Viet food (a truth) and neglected to answer her second question (a classic John McCain move). At least, until I had finished my meal so that I could give her an honest review to an honestly prepared meal. The cha gio was the best in the world - if your whole world is Greenville, South Carolina. I guess I'm spoiled at home, where we have whole lettuce leaves to roll up the cha gio in and have mint and cilantro to add. Here, there was no mint or cilantro and the lettuce was small salad-type pieces. The nuoc mam (fish sauce) was pretty good. The pho ga was really good - this is homemade chicken soup for sure. The star was the cafe sua da - it was phenomenal! I saved it for the end since it was sort of dessert for me. Once I started drinking it, I just couldn't stop. There is something very addictive about it - couldn't place the special ingredient but it had something to do with the milk. The coffee was a finely brewed version. Tasty! I complimented the owner and asked her if she did something special to the cafe. She coyly said "yes" and I asked her for the secret. She refused - then laughed! I couldn't help but laugh, too. This place is the second best vietnamese in Greenville--Mekong being #1. It's really small and first timers will hesitate at the door thinking "Should I go in." The answer is "Yes you should!" You'll be told where to sit and handed a HUGE multi-page menu with photos of each dish. It takes a good while to get through, so go ahead and order some Summer Rolls while you flip the pages. It seems impossible that this little place with basically one chef and one server (the owners) can bring forth all that is promised, but magic happens every time. And the food is really good. During our last visit--at Saturday lunch--we watched two tables of 6+ making seemingly impossible and complicated orders. We were both thinking "There's no way!" But all the dishes came out with no notable delay and nary a hitch and everyone was happy. The chef is a super human. We like to order those summer rolls--pork & shrimp, the best ever; a green papaya salad; sometimes a soup to share; and a couple entrees. We like their crispy duck, any of the stir fries--with meat or just veg; and anything made "clay pot" style is thick and brown and rich. read more
