I purchased a sewing machine from Sailrite on 1/14/15 for a total of $741.39. The machine was delivered to me on 1/23/15 at 12:45pm PST. I noticed, although the packaging was flawless from any damage, the powder coated surface on the machine was flaking off in several locations. This was clearly a defect in the manufacturers powder coating process. Powder coating is chemically bonded to the metal in the application process, which is different from hand paint. 1:00pm PST I phoned Sailrite's customer service department to notify them of the defective machine. The customer service created case number #SC13734 specifically assigned to Matt Borden, a sales and warehouse manager. Matt reached out to me and I forwarded photos of the flaking powder coated surface. His resolution was to immediately ship "touch up paint." This was not a satisfactory solution since I paid for a powder coated machine. He offered solutions that were unsatisfactory as I cannot accept paint, parts, of a repaired/refurbished machine. Matt Borden, the sales and warehouse manager, repeatedly stated they they were trying to help me with "my problem." For a company to shift its blame onto the customer is unsettling. After dealing with the defective machine and poor customer service, I do not feel it is fair for me to accept paint, parts, or a repaired/refurbished machine. After the defective machine and poor service from Matt Borden, I would like a full return and the company to pick up return shipping. This company should meet my requests for sending out a defective machine and for the poor experience I have had. read more

We just received our Sailrite - the blue one with all the gadgets. Delivery was on time and packaged well. Set up was a little slow and complicated, but with the help of the internet got it together and practiced a few stitches. The light that comes with it is not ideal at all. It really should be built into the machine and the cord is not long enough to get to any outlet even close by. It seems like the engineers managed a complete oversite on the lighting when designing this machine. If you are used to a light right at the needle, you will be disappointed. Other than the light, I think this machine is sturdy and powerful enough to sew the items we want in no time at all. Thank you. read more

So far we have enjoyed the incredible design support (videos!) and high quality products Sailrite provides, but I'm frustrated with the 30-day return policy. Also, if you're making a wire-hung canopy, be careful of the auto-generated equipment list that their app provides. Its beautiful in concept, but make sure the length of the bolts and other details will actually work with your specific conditions. We were delayed in the building our canopy. Got into it and realized we needed 6: bolts, not 4".... and because its past the 30-day return window, they won't exchange them. Kind of petty, considering we spent quite a bit of money with them. read more

I received the samples I ordered OK, but I feel the shipping charges were excessive for such a small package.

So I ordered the boat blanket kit to make fender covers and I like the material but my fenders were not as much as a bottle nose as the ones in the kit instructions, so I have to modify the darts. following the pattern/instructions with 3 inch darts made the sides no longer touch eachother. Luckily I made one at a time and I had to add some more fabric to the side a few inches so that the velcro had something to attach to. So I would modify to say that adding more width is better so that you dont end up with the velcro not attaching, and the darts I ended up using for a flatter topped fender were more like 1.5 inches deep and wide and then sewed together. There is more of a gap at the top than I would like I was hoping they would fit better, but I will tweak them and I dont want to add the binding because unless it is marine grade sunbrella it will rot long before the boat blanket will. read more

Was ready to place an order online and decided to call Sailrite in advance to make sure my order of fabric would be rolled and not folded. I ordered 2 yds and they assured me that anything over 1 yd would be rolled. Received the order FOLDED in a 12x14 plastic envelope. Reached out to customer service to replace the fabric and all they would do was to refund shipping and suggested I work the creases out of the fabric on my own. I had a very small project but needed a lot of advice and help - I needed to use pulleys and cords to lift and lower a modest load inside the house, and had some unusual space and clearance constraints. I went on line and was totally amazed by the level of customer service. I used the box seat cushion video and suggested materials to make two cushions for a window seat. They were easy and look great! The only negative comment I have is that the zipper tape and part of the mesh cushion fabric arrived soiled (even though they were sealed in plastic). Since both are used on the underside of the cushion I used them anyway but was disappointed in the lack of quality control that allowed them to go out to a customer. read more

Have gone thru three foot activated reostats for my ultra feed. The poor quality of succeeding products has each of them malfunctioning in different modes for different models. Have been able to kludge together one (the original) that works marginally with parts from the other two but the product is definitely not "sailor proof " and certainly not a product for anyone that does their fabric work aboard. read more

For years, I've dreamt of getting a portable LSZ-1 industrial sewing machine from Sailrite, but after leaving boating, I kind of forgot about it. Then I discovered the Sailrite website through a search for Sunbrella fabric for some cushions. I love their website! It is so easy to navigate and they have a really great online chat feature for help. Some online chats are useless, but theirs is terrific. I ended up ordering a ton of fabric samples. It's really essential because fabric in real life is so different in both texture and color than what you perceive on the screen. When you want to match a fabric to something else it's the ONLY way to go. It's a pain, but the Sailrite order fulfillment was so quick, it was really worth it. I ended up ordering a large amount of Sunbrella and everything is gorgeous. I've ordered from Fabric.com the same way, (samples first, then order) but the process takes much longer and I don't get any sense of a company of employees behind the online experience. Their fabric looks even less like what they have on their website than Sailrite's - but in the case of Sailrite, many times they even have videos with someone handling the fabric so you can get a better sense of it. And Sailrite makes free online How-To videos available on their website for everything from making cushions to using various tools. I ended up getting an Engle hot knife and it cuts the Sunbrella like a dream. Without that video, I wouldn't have remembered what a problem having fabric unravel is. I don't have a lot of experience (yet) making cushions, and all that expensive fabric would have ended up a mess. Since I've had such a good experience so far, I decided to overlook the poor reviews here on yelp (which was tough! - yelpers have never let me down) and I just ordered an LSZ-1. Again, service was impeccable. I was referred to "Matt" who answered all my intricate questions about the machine and then I actually placed the order online with someone helping over the phone. They were all so courteous and helpful, I'm left bewildered about the poor reviews here. I'm chalking it up to a small sample size and the fact people who have unhappy experiences are more likely to get online and rant than people who have happy experiences. But seriously, how often can you talk directly to someone who REALLY knows EVERYTHING about their product? These days, I'm lucky if I get through to a machine - forget about a live person of any caliber or one I can actually understand. My only complaint about the company is they seem to have no west coast presence. It's unnerving to buy a sewing machine sight unseen, but I guess buying sight unseen is simply the way of the future for just about everything. Still, I wish they had some demonstrations or demonstrators or something out here. They do have a 30 day return policy but I'd have to pay for shipping which is painful. But most places like this - a manufacturer - would have a restocking fee on top of shipping. I was thoroughly blown away by the service I received from Sailrite. I had ordered a chair from another company and the fabric I had selected was not in stock so I went on a search. I found the fabric at Sailrite but had to work quickly in order to get the fabric delivered to the furniture company. I called on a Friday afternoon at 3:30 and requested that the fabric be sent overnight. They said I had missed the deadline for the day but would get it out first thing on Monday. By the time I got home on Friday, my fabric had been cut and shipped. It arrived on Monday morning and my chair was put into production. In this day and age of lackluster customer service, I was incredibly surprised and happy with the service I received. I would order from them again and would happily recommend them to anyone. A friend of mine lent me their Untrafeed LZ1 sewing machine.. I wanted to LOVE this machine.. I have a million project that I want to do, and this was the machine I was looking at. Tried sewing some covers and the stitching was not great.. Emailed Sailrite support and was put in touch with Matt (tech support guy) Matt is GREAT, sent me videos and helped correct the issue.. I am thinking "Sailerite is a great company.." I ordered some supplies from them, and they seemed to have what you need, but took a while to get delivered. The "How to" videos are wonderful.. So I decided to purchase my own machine.. After many hours of researching the machine I decided that Sailrite was worth the extra $$ (The sailrite LZ1, is sold under many other names, Reliable, Barracuda and others, for almost 1/2 the price) for the support. So i ordered my LZ1 from the Sailrite site.. I checked back a couple days later to see what the status is and it was "Pending Fulfillment" (Basically the order was sitting). I called and the representative said "Maybe today". I checked a week later and same status, called again and they again said "Maybe today".. I think I am used to Amazon shipping, but over a week to get the shipment on the UPS truck seems VERY excessive. Now maybe it would be ok if they didnt charge my card until they ship it, but as I thought, they charged it when I placed the order.. I really want to love this company, but it seems like sales and shipping are not their strong point.. They do great videos and support, but you should purchase products elsewhere. read more

Purchasing an Ultrafeed was the worst online buying experience I've had in a long time. The Ultrafeed is misrepresented in Sailrite's YouTube videos. Their advertising of this product is deceptive, as the sound has clearly been altered in the videos to make the machine sound quieter. The Ultrafeed is extremely noisy, even for a so-called industrial machine. (I've used a Juki 1541S before, and there is no comparison. The Juki is so much quieter, and it's a true industrial.) The Ultrafeed is much too loud to be used in someone's home. I could not even hold a conversation while using it and cannot imagine sewing on such a loud machine for any length of time. I was sure there was something wrong with my machine, but after sending Sailrite a video, they confirmed that the noise I was hearing was normal for this machine. I am now out of pocket $130 to return an item that I would have never purchased in the first place had Sailrite's advertising been honest and accurate. I watched all of their Ultrafeed videos before making the purchase and not once did I hear the sound levels that I heard when using the machine in person. To say that I'm an unhappy customer is an understatement. They refused to assist me in returning the item, despite the fact that they could have purchased a shipping label for a fraction of the cost of what I had to pay retail. Then to add insult to injury, they tried to charge me for their shipping costs, even though my purchase included free shipping. I had to file a dispute with my credit card to get them to finally refund my full purchase amount. I will never buy anything from Sailrite again. read more

Of the two orders placed at Sailrite--they made shipping errors on both. The first error was just time consuming (had to send a bolt of the wrong colored fabric back and then wait for the correct color to be resent). The second was stressful and is still unresolved. On 1/21/2010, we placed an order with Sairite for various materials. Prior to placing our order, we contacted Sailrite and communicated with Tona in customer service regarding the ease of shipping an order to Mexico. We were assured that there would be no problem in meeting our deliver requirements, so we went ahead and placed an expedited order to ship to the marina we were at in Baja. We paid extra shipping fees to ensure the delivery date of our order. When it did not arrive, as scheduled, we were notified by UPS that the item count and the packing slip did not match the inventory in the package. We were advised that UPS could not forward our package because it would not pass through customs for this reason. When we contacted Sailrite on 1/27/2010 to seek assistance in this matter, Sailrite's customer service representative Lisa then advised us that they have had problems shipping to Mexico and that Tona gave us bad information. This unprofessional approach was especially frustrating when Lisa refused to directly answer our questions and passed us off to the shipping manager, Pat, for follow-up. Pat could not identify the error and seemed quite content to put us off for several days until she could look into it. She insisted that they made no error, even after UPS confirmed the exact nature of the problem caused by Sailrite. Ultimately, this petty denial of liability and lack of ability to resolve the matter without the owners intervention, has caused serious financial losses and a major deviation in our itinerary. We still have not received this order or a response indicating when it would arrive at the marina. When our order was placed on the 21st of this month, we paid additional shipping to have it delivered within 3 days, which would have given us a delivery date of around the 25th or 26th of January. As a result of the errors and lack of appropriate responsiveness, we have paid $65 a day (in slip fees) to wait for this package since 1/27/2010. Five days later, it is no longer cost effective to remain indefinitely waiting for this package to arrive. $325 later, the expense to wait for the package has exceeded the value of the package, including shipping. We have been treated rudely from Sailrite and UPS indicates that Sairite should have properly package the order for international shipping. Since Sailrite will not give us a date as to when someone will get back with us, we have no choice but to claim this grievance with Sailrite, since they took our money and did not deliver the goods at all. Sairite seems to have serious issues within the shipping department which have escalated to abusive business practices. Ideally, we would like our $325 in slip fees reimbursed to us for the unnecessary time we have spent waiting for this package to arrive. We cannot put a price on missing out sailing with our friends for two weeks at Turtle Bay. We have filed a dispute and fraud claim with our credit card company against Sailrite. Conversations with Pat from shipping and Lisa from customer service have indicated that we must wait until the owners are back from respective illness and business travel before we will be addressed. E-mails with various staff at Sailrite confirm that they do not acknowledge the urgency of this matter, nor the travel and financial implications here. Additionally, they do not say when anyone who can help us will be back in the office. When we did get a brief e-mail response from owner, Matt Grant, he was defensive and refused to accept that his company could make such an error. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT A PRIORITY WITH SAILRITE! Clearly the owner thinks he has the corner on this market. Let's get the word out and show that the consumer matters and has a voice. read more
