I ordered a jungle bird and my wife ordered an espresso martini. This place is super cool, if not just for the fact that it's hidden and you have to find it. The jungle bird was tiki strong and delicious with dark rum as the main. The espresso martini was also awesome flavor and strong. The Nightbird is a cool little hidden gem. The offering features generous pours and generous deals at happy hour, which runs 4-6. Cocktails are the star here, although a thoughtful selection of select wine and beer awaits if that's your jam. Tonight, Sip It Trebek caught my eye and I'm glad it did. "What is bourbon with a fig liqueur and some bitters, Alex?" The setting reminded us more of a corporate meeting or awards ceremony than a nice birthday dinner. To say the least, it was not what we expected or had envisioned for the occasion. When we asked why we were seated in the ballroom, we were told that it was a way for the hotel to capture additional business and take advantage of an otherwise missed opportunity. While we understand the business reasoning, guests should be informed of this arrangement when making their reservations rather than having it come as an unpleasant surprise upon arrival. If you're making a reservation here during a football weekend, be sure to ask where you will actually be seated and whether the setting is the restaurant you were expecting. Don't assume that being seated in a ballroom with TVs will be suitable for everyone--especially when celebrating a birthday or other special occasion. We enjoyed our previous experience here, which is why this visit was particularly disappointing.

In New Orleans, if you go below street level, you are probably either in water or in the sewer. Growing up below sea level messes with your head. Anyway, The Blind Pig is a dark, laid-back Oxford staple and I love it. The food is delicious, the beer is cold and plentiful, and it is a great place to watch a game, grab a meal, or just sit around and talk with friends. It also happens to be the first place I ate when I came to Oxford looking for apartments, so it will always have a fond spot in my heart. It is not fancy, and that is exactly why I like it. Hungry? Come here for lunch or dinner. A few standouts for me are the Cuban, the burger, and the nachos. All damn good. Oxford has plenty of newer, prettier, fancier places, but there is something about The Blind Pig that just works. The food is nothing fancy but it is good bar food for a fair price. Drinks are reasonable in cost and the service is friendly, efficient and simply they are there to help you if you need it. I have walked by many times but am glad I finally went in for a drink and mozzarella sticks.
